We here at PETA adore Katherine Heigl for her huge heart for animals. When she's not campaigning for spay-and-neuter legislation or sporting our fabulous PETA T-shirts, she's finding other ways to speak up for animals.
Now the National Enquirer is reporting that on a recent trip to Mexico, the Grey's Anatomy star found herself in a fishy situation—a situation involving a fish, that is. Upon spotting a local fisher with a recently caught yellow-finned tuna on his hook, Heigl offered the man $100 to release the fish back into the water. At first, the fisher refused. Not to be messed with, Heigl quickly upped the ante to $200, and the fish was promptly returned to the Mexican waters.
Fish have very few advocates like Katherine, but they suffer just as much as any animal with whom we sympathize—like, say, a furry little dog. Did you know that when fish are hooked through their mouths with sharp metal points, the open wounds are often fatal to the injured fish and also make them vulnerable to other predators?
After the fish was thrown back, the compassionate Heigl said, "Thanks, I hate to see anything die." We certainly hear you on that, Katherine!

Hooray KH! That's one lucky Mexican fish.
Speaking of "off the hook," today is Talk Like a Pirate Day, and how better to celebrate it than by posting the brilliant Pirates of the Carob Bean animation on the blog?
P.S. You guys can keep that Off the Hook pun. That sh**'s for free.

That's awesome. I hope the fish wasn't mortally injured by the whole interaction, though, since catch-and-release often kills fish anyway. That would make the whole kind of thing a little unfortunate.

If being hooked is so often fatal, then she might have just spent $200 to have the fish suffer even longer before dying anyway plus given $200 to a man who will use it to fund his fishing business even more. Somehow I doubt being handed $200 by a tv actress is going to stop him from fishing just as much in the future.

Lets have a little faith. Fish are resilient. I think the critics should remember that she saved a life. The law has failed to protect those fish so the man and others like him will kill again. Katherine spared (or tried to spare) that soul a senseless death. This man was paid to be compassionate, we can only hope it makes him stop and think. No gesture of kindness goes without some reward.

I think it was more she just didnt want to see the fish suffering and flapping around. Heigl is not a vegan or a vegetarian but that doesn't mean you want to see animals suffer.

That's great to hear she has done this! Now she should get behind PETA and do an anti-fur or anti-fishing hurts advert which should get tons of important press coverage for the animals.
Thanks Katherine

She hates to see ANYTHING die? So when her home becomes infested with roahces what ever will she do? Live with them and their diseases?
It's nice to see she saved one fish's life. But, let's be realistic- that same man probably went fishing the very next day.

Where it may be true the man went fishing the very next day i think the point of the matter is that she tried to make a difference with even one fish. If no one did one little thing each day i'd think we'd be a whole lot worse don't you? I think it was a great thing for her to have done, plus the guy made some easy money right? Little things can add up, people will notice and it can become a snowball affect. Compassion is key so what about the what if's, go with your heart
