Update 12/22/2008: Donna Karan has announced that her fall 2009 lines will be fur-free and that she has "no plans" to use fur in the future! Read more.

Fashion designer Donna Karan unveiled her spring 2009 DKNY collection this Sunday at New York's Fashion Week. Of course, PETA was there as well.

PETA members took over the runway during the show wielding signs that read, "Donna: Dump Fur," and chanting, "Shame!" They were protesting because Karan used rabbit fur in her collection that is in stores now—despite her promise to stop using fur. The two protesters were quickly taken from the catwalk and arrested, but we're pretty certain that their message was heard loud and clear.

Meanwhile, outside the show, protesters who were dressed as bloodied rabbits held a demonstration with signs reading, "Rabbits Are Friends," "No Blood for Vanity," and "Real Designers Don't Hurt Animals."

Seriously, Donna. Breaking your promise, even when you know that to get the fur you use, fur farmers smash the rabbits’ skulls and then behead them and skin them – sometimes while they're still alive?

The words "cold" and "heartless" come to mind.

DK is very disappointing considering her relentless determination to keep incorporating rabbit fur in her designs.. having said that.. I still feel other fur designs are far by worse than DK in that they use all types of animals.. and due to their predispostion.. these animals such as arctic foxes, raccoosn, mink even suffer even far greater in their tiny confinement or enclosures ..one name FENDI springs to mind as well as all the others..
I wish someone would put all these people/designers who use real fur all into one pot and bring them all to the boil..

that is wonderfully courageous

Posted by: brock | September 8, 2008 06:52 PM

I really cannot understand what this womans problem is and why she finds it so hard to stop using fur. It really saddens me that there are people in this world who continue to be void of compassion just to make a buck. I will never buy any of her clothes!

I applaud those that took a stand for the animals at this so called fashion show!

I like Donna Karan. She should be able to have fur in her collection if she wants too. And if she wants to have a rare steak from time to time, that is ok too. Be nice guys!

DKNY sucks, I was at the demo and they were alot of supporters for anti-fur movement. They applauded and promise to boycott DKNY

Jaques, I think your a little confused about who needs to be nice, Donnas the one responsible for the ridiculus killing of precious animals

TO Jaques :I THINK YOUR ON THE WRONG WEB-SITE. THIS IS A PETA BLOG. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS YOUR POINT OF VIEW ABOUT WEARING FUR AND EATING MEAT. BUT...YOU SHOULD REALLY GO TO ANOTHER WEB-SITE FOR PEOPLE WHO EAT, BEAT,AND TORTURE ANIMALS. I'M SURE YOUR PIONT OF VIEW WILL BE MORE WELCOMED THERE. BY THE WAY...MAYBE YOUR FRIEND DONNA KARAN WILL BE THERE. FUR IS DEAD AND SO IS YOUR PIONT OF VIEW! AND DONNA KARAN FASHION STYLE SCREAMS " ANIMAL ABUSE "

Posted by: SASHA | September 8, 2008 10:12 PM

I have written on here before and I dont think any designer should use any kind of animal fur. BUT as I have also said before, I wish PETA wouldn't compliment designers who don't use fur but still use reptile skins. The reptiles should be protected too! Just because they aren't cute and cuddly like say a rabbit, they still should not be used to make items out of their skins.

Posted by: Rex's Mom | September 8, 2008 11:03 PM

"I like Donna Karan. She should be able to have fur in her collection if she wants too. And if she wants to have a rare steak from time to time, that is ok too. Be nice guys!"

So, Jaques, you're saying that the brutal deaths of animals are "okay"? That it's just fine? So, you agree that being bludgeoned or skinned alive are perfectly acceptable ways to treat innocent beings who are fully capable of feeling pain, fear, sorrow, and joy, right? Following that logic, it would be perfectly okay to bludgeon a person. Because they, like rabbits and cows, are beings who feel pain, fear, sorrow, and joy.

Don't get mad at me or anything, you were the one who said it.

Posted by: Natalie | September 9, 2008 12:04 AM

Jacques:
PETA is not being mean..just making a point..these are how social movements make positive changes in the world...pinpoint the problem and go after the root of it...in this case the designer. If you use fur, you are condoning, endorsing and funding animal abuse. And if that ain't mean...I don't know what is.

Posted by: Courtney | September 9, 2008 07:19 AM

Jaques: If she should be able to do whatever she wants, why don't you volunteer to have your head bashed in and then be skinned alive. While you are consciously suffering unimaginable pain, console yourself that you're not only being nice, but you're dying for such a worthy cause. I would NEVER wish that pain on you or Donna Karen, even if you can't show the same respect for animals. That's the beauty of compassion. I don't need to understand you to care if you suffer.
BTW: It's not "if she wants too", it's "if she wants TO".

Posted by: Anita50882 | September 9, 2008 07:58 AM

It's because of people like Jacques that Donna Karan is still designing fur garments. If we want to stop people like her, we have to change the mindset of people like that. Unfortunately, they seem to be a majority...

Posted by: Lisa | September 9, 2008 10:14 AM

Jaques - have you watched any of PETA's videos on fur-farming? Why should we be nice to DK while she endorses the murder and torture of animals???

Posted by: Mia | September 9, 2008 10:43 AM

Awhhh, Donna Karan use to be my favorite designer.

Posted by: Carmen | September 9, 2008 11:08 AM

My mom and I just became PETA members, even though we have unoffically been members for the past 15 years. I can say, without a doubt, I will never purchase a single item from DK. I am very big into fashion and spend a lot of money on clothing and have convienced my family, friends, and co-workers not to buy DK. I have also forwarded this page to everyone in my email and asked them to forward it to all their contacts. It's sad that some people really aren't educated on how animals are really treated because they are in La La land. So my mother and I make it a point to educate these people on the facts!

Posted by: Bridget | September 9, 2008 11:48 AM

This shows she is not only cruel, she is lazy. I have had numerous items with faux fur in the past which are often nicer then the real stuff and I fail to see how it would be hard for her to use that instead.

Posted by: Sarah | September 9, 2008 11:59 AM

Donna Karan gives the impression of being a selfish, grasping person.

She doesn't care about anything other than the almighty dollar.

Well, she is getting old. Maybe someday someone will treat her with compassion, and she might learn.

Congratulations PeTA on a successful runway takeover. These events are hard to infiltrate. The chances of being tackled before you even get to say anything are high. Great job once again.
P.S-
Donna Karan Rules!(as in she's the Queen of the soulless)

WOW ! WHAT A GREAT PCTURE !! I'M PROUD OF THE WOMEN WITH THE "DONNA DUMP FUR" POSTER !AS I HAVE SAID BEFORE.. A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS !! I HOPE EVERYONE CAN SEE THIS PICTURE ! IT'S NICE TO SEE SOMEONE DOING SOMETHING DARING FOR ANIMALS ! I KNOW I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANY DONNA KARAN PRODUCTS EVER AGAIN ! BOYCOTT DONNA KARAN !!! BOYCOTT FUR !

Posted by: SASHA | September 9, 2008 05:08 PM

I work part-time for a well-known department store. I frequently let customers know about Donna Karan. They are shocked and occasionally say, well, I guess I'll find another line of clothes to wear.

See, Donna! Those who care about suffering will continue to be a powerful force of change. Compassion must extend to every living being--not just human beings!

As Jeremy Bentham said, "The question is not can they reason, nor can they talk? But can they suffer?" and YES THEY SUFFER!!! and for what? Human's base and disgusting vanity? Shame on us!

Write to Donna Karan and tell her that you won't buy another item of her line until she commits fully to ending her love affair with fur.

Posted by: Susan T | September 9, 2008 08:49 PM

Why can't PETA do the same thing for Alexander McQueen? I look at fashion magazines and apparently wearing fur is in this season...gross!!!

Posted by: MeL | September 10, 2008 11:05 AM

I would gladly go to jail for the sake of animals...

Posted by: Izzy | September 10, 2008 12:52 PM

My wife and I recently watched a documentary about the torture, killing, beating, and skinning "ALIVE",these beutiful little fur and mink foxes. We have never in our lives been so disgusted by the shear "JOY" of the men and women skinning these lovely little animals while they were still breathing and twitching in complete agony. And then thrown on top of a heap of suffering animals still alive! As long as we live we will never buy fur nor endorse any company or designer who buys fur from these "INSANE" human beings. Anyone we see wearing fur we try to make them as uncomfortable as possible because of their arrogance and ignorance. By the way the fur bussiness is on a huge downslide regardless of that tiny percentage of that so called "upper class" of fur customers. These people are so pretentious and shallow they feel that carrying the skin of a dead animal around their neck or back gives them a sense oa entitlement. My wife and I look at these people and actually chuckle at their attempt for some type of attention. Shame on all of these designers for providing such a disgusting demand of this garment.

Posted by: kevin g | September 10, 2008 12:56 PM

Hi, I have a little rabbit, and I adore him, he is so cute and tiny, I just cant imagine that someone could feel fine using the skin of a beautiful creature, and feeling beautiful in it, I dont like dkny anymore, I wont buy anything from her anymore.

Posted by: tati | September 10, 2008 01:22 PM

That Person in the picture is really brave, I WISH I could be more like her!

Posted by: luvallanimals | September 10, 2008 03:55 PM

I saw a quick shot on the news of two people being thrown off a model runway protesting fur and didn't realize it was PETA. Hooray! Good job! Congratulations on trying to wake up the clueless and ignorant attitudes of superficial and shallow people who need to know that wearing fur represents agonizing torture and outright inhumane abuse to innocent animals for the sake of pure vanity. I thought that DK was intelligent, but her use of fur proves otherwise. In the world of synthetic fur substitutes, there's no excuse for blatant disregard of animal's lives. Shame on you, Donna Karan....for not care(in).

Posted by: Boschbygosh | September 10, 2008 03:57 PM

DK used to be one of my fave designers, until I found out what she was doing to cute little bunny rabbits!! I mean they are sooo adorable, why would somebody wear them?? i showed some people in my internet applications class the other day the video of what china was doing to animals for their fur, and they couldnt watch it (it makes me cry and puke all at the same time). then i asked them would they wear fur, one said "if it was cute, yea!" and the other said "would you rather be cold or warm???" and i held up my jacket made of cotton and said "i already made that choice. and i dont mind it, knowning that an animal didnt die for my warmth makes me feel so much better."

Some people are so ignorant. they're only 3 vegetarians in my school (me included) and idk about people against fur. i am the only one i know about. It's like, have some compassion please!!

Posted by: Amber Falobas | September 10, 2008 08:04 PM

I was recently shopping with my aunt and made a point of VERY loudly announcing that I would NEVER try on or buy anything made by Donna Karan or DKNY. My aunt, who knows my ways well by now, laughed, and several other shoppers looked shocked, so I continued talking about how she uses fur in her clothing lines and should be avoided and ostracized at all costs. And to Jacques, I hope to god that you don't own any companion animals because anyone callous enough to think animals should be tortured and murdered for fashion and food is probably a person who neglects their dogs and cats, letting them shiver outside while you sit inside and turn your body into a graveyard with a "nice rare steak". I think you need to wake up and smell the offal and realize the vegan is the only way to be!

those look like leather pants that shes wearing in the photo, and to JahLOVE, just because thi is a peta website, does that mean there is only one point of view aloud? Freedom of speech mean anything to you

How sad it is that "Convenience" takes the lead in everyday American life as well as life world-wide. Is it so difficult to come up with new ideas when it comes to designing clothes, manufacturing food and cleaning items that the old stand by of: "We'll just use animals, they're cheap and we'll make more money" is all these industries can come up with?. I'm convinced We Need To Be Inconvenienced To Live A Better Life for ourselves and the animals!

Posted by: M | September 11, 2008 10:43 AM

If you want to be heard that's definately the way to do it! I'm impressed! It says what needs to be said to a huge, very public audience without violence or any inappropriate behaviour. Whether you're a PETA member, a vegetarian, an animal lover or none of the above, there is no excuse for using animals in a clothing line. Nothing to be gained that can't be done just as profitably without fur and without the abuse and mutilation of animals. Good on you!!

Posted by: J_ | September 11, 2008 11:20 AM

I don't understand why fur lovers are on this site. Uh, this is for animal lovers, duh! Yes there are many point of views but there is nothing about the fur industry that you could even fight for. Name one good thing about it. At least people who eat meat can say that the leather industry is a no waste industry. That people eat the meat and use the skin. Not that I'm saying it is OK but at least they have somewhat of a fight. But the fur industry is a COMPLETE waste.

Posted by: Amanda | September 11, 2008 11:51 AM

I signed the same thing saying I will never buy any thing with fur on or in it. I didnt sign it before I found out what they were doing to get this fur.Skinnig them alive beatings ect.It makes me so mad to think someone knows what they do to get the fur ..signs it and still uses the fur.DAM HER .... AND SHES GOT THE POWER TO REALLY CHANGE THINGS !!!!! DAM HER AGAIN.this is so so sad wow

Posted by: Robert Dipert | September 11, 2008 12:00 PM

I am new to sites like PETA and I've only recently learned of exactly how horrible humans treat animals (farm, fur, exotic, etc). How someone could have the ability to inflict such pain and suffering and it not bother them or even enjoy it is beyond my comprehension.

I have never liked Donna Karan's designs, even her crummy t-shirts and jeans in the TJ Maxx stores I would happily pass by. This is all the more reason to dismiss her and any designers still using fur in their creations. I feel the same about leather. Its hard to eliminate from every aspect of our lives. Sometimes we forget that our shoes, or part of them, and other things we didn't realize contain some part of a once beautiful, feeling animal. We are all doing the best we can to help and make more people aware. What will it take to make the unfeeling souls change their heart???

Posted by: Terry Murphy | September 11, 2008 12:05 PM

The protester is not wearing leather, looks like nylon/lycra.
It's much better to be carried out in something that won't rip!

Posted by: elsa | September 11, 2008 12:24 PM

I wonder what the runway would look like if the top models in the industry agreed to not contract with designers that use fur? The clothes can't walk themselves.

Posted by: Cully Miller | September 11, 2008 12:35 PM

what kind of person could break that promise?
this is just wrong!
rabbits don't deserve to die and suffer for fashion!

Posted by: Barbara | September 11, 2008 12:40 PM

We should also be looking at a protest to Muks (muklukstore.com). They are proudly boasting about their new raccoon fur jackets among many items. I have already emailed them asking them to stop using fur but, of course, they never reply. Boycott all fur companies and let them know why.

Donna Karan off my shopping list...... Stupid woman !

Posted by: cecilia | September 11, 2008 01:18 PM

I would like Peta to do a lsit of all the designers using fur in there lines and those who strongly apose it such as Stella Mcarthy .Knowing this would be helpful to all consumers. We then can boycott or purchase and promote the good ones . Money is always the motivator and if we do not buy from the animal killers it will change cooperates mindset!

Posted by: Linda | September 11, 2008 01:47 PM

GREAT idea, Linda. I would love to have such a list. I would pass it out to all my girlfriends and guyfriends. Heck, I'd even send it as a letter to the editor of our local paper. PETA, can you compile such a list? Didn't you do something similar a few years back on the cosmetic companies? Just asking...

Posted by: coldwater71 | September 11, 2008 05:28 PM

there's a picutre of an animal after it has had it's skin torn off it's body and it's eyes glazed and still open afterwards .. the empty and sad look its eyes.. the horror this and many thousands and millions go through becuase of the unbelievably cruel and barbaric fur trade.. it breaks my heart each and everytime just to see the picture and to think about it... these poeple who still thikn feel and believe it's okay to design with animal skins and furs knowing fully well what horrors these animals go through incluidng their unbearable confined daily existence in a small cage.. well. .they can't be human beings with feelings, thought or a conscience can they?.. they must be have to be quite or rather totally 'vacuous' inside that body of theirs.. with warped not fully functioning brains.. waht ohter explanation is there? who on EARTH would support so whole heartedly as they do.. to animal cruelty in vast large numbers as in the fur trade?.. they are INhuman..
their brains canNOT be functioning properly or right..

Posted by: yuenf | September 11, 2008 05:31 PM

People who have no regard for innocent animals are lacking something very important! Compassion should always come before greed! Let's all pray for these people, as they need all the help they can get! Talk about getting a life!!

Posted by: Rita Cross | September 11, 2008 05:36 PM

don't blame the source. blame those that wear them.
If consumers would feel uncomfortable of what they are wearing, they would have a hard time wearing skin and fur. That is where we come in. When we are around peaple wearing fur, my wife and I usually converse out loud of how these fur and skin designs came about. We've gotten into a couple of discussions with the wearers a couple of times, BUT IT WAS WELL WORTH IT. I am sure they'll think about it next time they go for that garment on the hanger.

Posted by: pantouff | September 11, 2008 05:37 PM

I am totally against fur for fashion but going after the designers is only part of it. What about all the people who buy the stuff? If people did not buy the fur clothing then the designers would not sell it since they are only into profit. I work for a major clothing and footwear company and I don't think they do fur but they do leather shoes and practically nothing but. They say they never had a request for non-leather footwear so did not feel the need.

Posted by: Ville | September 11, 2008 06:57 PM

I have been boycotting Donna Karan for a while now as she has always been a fan of fur. I thought the idea of being a designer was to design clothes, fur is not designing it is not something new she has created. She is stealing designs from rabbits, if she did that to any other designer she would be sued for millions. Oh yeah and Jacques you are a moron!!!

I went vegan finally six months ago because I could no longer deny the connection between the animals I love at home and what was on my plate. I cannot imagine contributing to the unimaginable suffering of another life for a fleeting pleasure. Donna Karen can get bent.

Posted by: Nathan | September 12, 2008 12:56 AM

my boyfriend bought some DKNY aftershave recently, and i bought a top. NEVER AGAIN will i buy anything from Donna Karan - fortunately, there are lots of people that care and often it's a case of education, many people are ignorant of the cold hard truth and once they delve a little deeper, they are horrified. well done PETA.

Posted by: Rebekah Crowder | September 12, 2008 07:32 AM

I had always been a fan of Donna Karan and frequently purchased DKNY clothing. Never again!! Thank you PETA for continuing to expose and hold accountable the people who are creating such massive and unnecessary suffering.

Fur is dead and meat is murder no matter how "cute" or not so cute the source may be. Animals are NOT ours to use.

Posted by: veganmuff | September 12, 2008 09:01 AM

I have two house rabbits as pets, and this just chaps my hide to no end. It hits way too close to home. Bunnies are the most sweet and gentle creatures ever. It is a sick person who could ever hurt one. Shame on DK!

Posted by: Deana | September 12, 2008 10:11 AM

Its no longer enough just to be a vegan in this world.to be truly cruelty free, one must also be environmentally responsible.Using materials like pleather, fake fur,non-organic cotton and polyester will still indirectly harm animals because to make these items requires the use of either petroleum products or enormous pesticides. this gets into our environment and effects everything from wild life, people, fish and more.Of course it is better though than supporting Donna Karan or any other ruthless designer!I pray that God will put an end to cruelty of all kinds and that justice will prevail. The best fabrics are organic cotton, organic hemp fleece, hemp shoes, recycled and/or repuposed fabrics are still the best of all! They may sometimes cost more, but think of it as a donation to our Earth.Peace to the souls of these creatures whose bodies were needlessly harmed! Travel lightly my dear animal friends!

Posted by: lynne ekreb | September 12, 2008 11:02 AM

I applaud the PETA demonstrators for having the guts to stand up for innocent animals! I have stopped buying ANY DKNY merchandise (and I used to throw a lot of $$ her way in the past). How ignorant can a designer be?? Maybe if Donna was strapped down to a chair and MADE to watch some of these cruelty, true-life videos, she might change her tune?? But, I guess you have to have a heart to do that! So Donna...Do you have a heart?

All eyes were on us, in our bunny rabbit costumes. When Suddenly.....all uniformed police officers stormed the doorway to bloody Bryant Park. I guess thats when you guys took the stage and stole the show.

The next day Carolina Herrara and her dunces (useful idiots) took fashion to a new and disturbing low and......

There she was, Ivana Trump in all of her glory and splendor, gracing Bryant Park with her manicured presence, positioning herself in front of a horde of photographers. Not too close. Call it a coincidence but we too had a photograph of Ivana. In a lamb fetus dress. Yes, thats right. Compliments of Carolina Herrara in collusion with SATAN THE DEVIL. They kill the mother, rip the baby from the womb, skin it and just so Ivana Trump can have yet another dress.

The part that drives me to near psychotic rage is not the perfect hair do, or the oh so still gorgeous body, or those perfect cheek implants, is this is a women who is known to sit in a Christian Church on Sunday where Jesus Christ is proclaimed THE LAMB OF GOD. Is she brain dead. Is the Church brain dead. Or is it a heart condition. I hope it is the former because the Bible says to guard your heart with your life, for out of it flows the very essence of life. LOVE, COMPASSION, MERCY.

I wonder how long they allow the baby lamb to live. An hour. Two hours. How many breaths, how many heart beats do those who exult them selves above God give a baby lamb.

pantouff..
that's only partly true.. it's because these fashion deigners incorporate or use wholeheartedly real animal skins and furs.. which makes these items in supply and accessible to consumers who most are none the wiser.. or are. .but don't care.. (as long as they themeselves aren't suffering or being tortured).. it's these pea-brained BOZO and soulless designers.. that need wringing thorugh a clothes drier.. for being so God damned uncaring and fully and wholeheartedly supporting animal cruelty even zealously.. so .. yes.. they ARE to blame..
I loathe them all.. and that Wintour a personicated witch if there ever was .. is just as bad.. for flogging their horrid wares all over that frivolous magazine of hers..
compassion and kindness SHOULD ALWAYS come before frivolousness and selfishness.. or these so called 'luxury'.. products..sure..luxury for them.. but what about the animals who suffer such miserable and wretches lives and deaths.. NO excuse!!!

I agree with "Rex's Mom" about using reptile skins as well. No one else seemed to care about their skins as well. I didn't see any other posts on it. I don't particularily care for reptiles but I don't believe it is ever ok for any animal to be used for its skin nor fur.

Funny how in this terrible economy where unemployment is so pervasive, that anyone can even AFFORD fur!
I once had a friend who listened very patiently when I explained in great detail the horrors behind fur - the trapping, the skinning, etc. -and after I was finished, she said, "Yes, well, the thing is, I really like the way I look in fur." I could only stare at this idiot (who didn't look nearly as good as she thought and appeared even uglier to me after that statement) and write her off my friend list. There are some people who are simply too selfish and vain to ever get it through their thick heads that this is wrong. To help them, I often put small fliers (that I make up and print) about how fur is obtained in pockets of fur garments in stores. I figure, when they get their item home and cut off the tags and look through the pockets, they'll get a little education. Maybe it will get through to one of them. I have learned that throwing paint on people's coats will only piss them off and they will not listen. I am extremely fashionable, without being cruel, and I just try to set the example that if I can look stylish and elegant without killing something, maybe you can too.
When I was very young, I thought that when animals died in the woods, someone went out and collected them and sold them to fur companies. I was utterly appalled when I found out that they were actually killed for their fur - what kind of monster could do such a thing? Of course, then I began my lifetime of learning about the uncountable, horrible ways humans treat animals and that led to a lifetime of semi-activism and rescue and why my Will leaves everything to animal organizations. While it is a world of pain out there for a lot of animals, there are MANY MANY more people who are helping them and who are aware of what is going on, esp. because of the Internet.

Shopping yesterday in Zurich, the shops are full of fur! totally unbelievable as I thought we are much more educated, everywhere furtrims, fur coats. So whats wrong with our world and the fashion designers? Sales personal is telling me, they know where the fur comes from and its certified...but certified for what? For a good death? They tell me that consumers want fur, so I do not think that the anti fur moevement should ever stop!

Designers with Fur:

Leonardo, Marccain, Zara, Luisa Cerrano....

Stop it! We need more prominet women to pose against fur, also in Switzerland!

Forget about her fashion line along w/her perfume collection which stinks anyway. She has no class like Coco Chanel did when she was her age. Perhaps she was raised in a barn. I have no intention of every buying any of her franrances, let alone clothes made by her as long as she continues to use animal fur which is senseless when there is faux fur to be used. Let her go live in China & see how it is done if that's what she wants & sell to the people living there instead of us Americans.

Peta parabéns...O abuso em relação aos animais tem que acabar, God bless you !

Posted by: Milena Vasconcellos | September 17, 2008 03:00 PM

It makes me so freaking mad...so mad and disgusted at DK and all others who have this entitled attitude that killing animals is their freaking right. Im a Middle School Teacher in NC and even though Im not for violence.....These entitled jerks really makes 1 start to question what needs to be done next.

Posted by: Raven | September 22, 2008 12:50 PM

My first comment is that DK is not "breaking her promise" or changing her mind, or any other soft excuses. She is basically a LIAR. And that is the protest sign that I would have held up at the show. Second, The fact that DK unveiled fur for Spring begs the question, "Why do we need fur in Spring?" The bigger question, of course, is, "Why do we need to wear fur at all?" The answer to that is always, WE DON'T. We are not cave people or pioneers; we have alternatives (although I wouldn't recommend wool from Australia) and the wearing of fur is pure vanity. Third, in response to Saucy's comments about church-going women and their fur: please don't judge all church-goers, or all Christians by the same measurement. I am a church-going Christian, and don't wear, use or eat any animals, and I have friends that are the same. It's an uphill battle with most of my fellow believers, but I have been (an ethical) vegetarian (and for the most part, vegan) for almost 20 years and have no intention of changing for anyone. The proof that I'm eating as God originally intended is that I am in much better shape and health than they are! When God gave dominion over the animals, He had no intention of condoning the treatment that they've received on this planet. In fact, there are many references in the Bible about kindness and cruelty to animals. Thankfully, I haven't found any women in my church that wear real fur, but that may be more of a reflection of the economy than of their consciences, but if I find any, rest assured I will speak to them in love about it.

Maybe Donna and company should take a trip to the countries that beat, torture and smash the sculls of animals before they slash their throats and skin them some of them are still alive by the way. Maybe Donna should take a look at some of the undercover videos posted on PETA. Plus..cats and dogs are passed off as rabbit fur and the torture of all these animals is dispictable!

...Did anyone else notice that the veg girl has a better body than most of the models? *smug*

That is great news it is about time people gave respect to animals at all times.
Causing problems for people that abuse animals they don't have the right to do so and that is a fact.

I think that crashing her runway show is disrespectful to Donna Karan and is more detrimental to the PETA cause. If you were not so militant PETA would have a better public perception and maybe even have a larger amount of members. Chill out guys, there are other ways to get the message out than by ruining a $300,000 fashion show.

Adelante y exito en la lucha contra el maltrato animal

Posted by: Adriana | December 22, 2008 03:57 PM

Katie: The point here is that the money $300K is driving a hideous industry that exploits animals in the most cruel way possible.Do you not think the torturing of animals is disrespectful? That's what makes this an uglier world to live in. Ugly people from the inside out.

Having had companion pets - (including a rabbit) for most of my life, I am astounded with the brutality of the fur trade in the name of fashion. My companions have brought me nothing but joy and laughter throughout my life and are integral to who I am as a person. So, what sort of person are YOU Donna, when you prey and profit on the helpless, the silent and the defenceless? I will NEVER purchase a single item from your tainted label.

Good job to everyone who support the campaing!

A few points:

1) Thank you Peta for all you do for animals! I have loved animals my whole life, donate to many animal causes, have rescued animals from shelters including my current family pet who I adore - a 10 year old dog, and do my best to make the least negative impact I can on this world.

2) I honestly feel that there has to be an advertising campaign that clearly & concisely addresses the cruel method by which animals are skinned alive and the fact that China is using cat & dog fur and selling it without consumers' knowledge.

3) Can someone tell me why the animals are skinned alive - is it merely to save the extra cost or time that it would take to humanely kill the animal first?

4) As an animal lover, I have never worn fur simply because I of course feel that no animal should ever give its life so that I can be in fashion. However, I was shocked when I recently learned about just how horrific the fur trade is. I didn't sleep for days after seeing the video of the asiatic raccoon dog being skinned alive, and then the video with the German Shephard dog, other dogs, puppies, kittens, etc. all being killed in China. Not to mention the cruel conditions at fur farms with the small cages & poorly cared-for animals. Please let's all keep spreading the word and I hope there can be a way to educate the masses. I honestly think people who are driven by fashion & consumerism just don't take the time to understand fully. Maybe they think the animals live on some nice farm and are humanely euthanized when they get old. But I bet if they knew of the torture, that many people would change their thinking.

5) I so wish & pray all the time that more people can become enlightened about all the animal issues. I have recently become aware of more animal issues than ever before. As soon as one starts to educate oneself, life changes on many fronts. I am wholeheartedly of the belief that kindness to animals makes the world a better place, and I hope more & more people can start to see this.

6) Thank you again Peta for all you do for animals!

i am really glad about what you did. Thank you alot. Animals have rights

We're all talking about the fur the designers're using. Just wondering if you all feel the same with leather shoes and bags too...
I myself had not wear any animal item for 15+yrs and proud of myself. But that's not easy at all coz leather ones, their design, do look cooler.
I'm a huge animal rights supporter. But felt so sad when I couldn't even convince my own sister not to wear leather shoes and handbags. She always tried to trump me with the durability factor.
I know most of you're already vegeterians. I too had tried cutting all meat except seafood from my diet for almost 2yrs but went back when my recent blood test result showed that I was super anaemic. Followup investigations still can't find the reason why and where I'm loosing blood.
Anyway, diet affects health. I'll keep trying to go animal free. But for fashion, killing any kind of animal, no matter how humane, is not acceptable!

Donna Karan.. .you are a dispicable person using innocent animals so that you can get rich off of them.... How the hell do you sleep at night. Biatch!!!!! I will never buy your garbage!
