Severely injured dog in Sanchong shelter
Dog in Sanchong shelter
Remember the Sanchong animal shelter outside Taipei, where PETA Asia-Pacific found suffering dogs kept in horrific conditions? Well, thanks to all your calls and e-mails, the city's mayor is going to meet with PETA Asia-Pacific. He wants to discuss reforms like fixing the shelter's floor and developing SOPs for caring for the sick and injured animals. But we want more—much, much more—and we need your help!

Conditions at the shelter are so bad that redoing the concrete floor and putting up a tarp to help keep out torrential rain isn't going to do it. So long as the same lazy louts are still in charge—people who stand around joking while dogs convulse at their feet—we'd like the place to be closed down and the money to be used to move strays straight from the street into veterinary care. Please tell Sanchong to use the shelter for something else, to reassign the callous workers, and to send dogs straight to the vet for treatment or euthanasia if they are pain.

PETA Asia-Pacific's Coco and local volunteers held a great demo (see below).

As much as I would like it all to change immediately, I am a realist. I think it is important to show the leaders what a well run, humane organization looks like - as a goal. Step wise advancement toward that goal with acceptable timelines would be great progress. I would love to include the same kind of sensitivity training for staff (mandatory) and the general public (ad hoc) that we saw in the early public correctness years for women in the workplace and sexual harrasment.

I feel so proud of these people. It's much easier for us here in the States, because dogs aren't seen as food. I can't imagine the courage it takes for PETA ASIA-PACIFIC to do a demonstration like this. Great job PETA

We want to save many poor, homeless, hungry dogs in my home town. We see there have a big problem of the dogs in Tibetan.

How courageous they must be to stand up for dogs in Asia. It is very hopeful for dogs. No dog deserves to die like that. People should respect all life forms.

In America doggies have rights too ya know. And one day so will the piggies and the cows and calves, the chickens and ducks deserve to be free.

Thank you for your bravado to our kind hearted brothers and sisteres in Asia.

God Bless
