Dear Tony,I'm in New York this week, and although I dread seeing the carriage horses being forced to work in the summer heat, I'm thrilled that you've introduced a bill to ban this cruel old trade. I hope you're successful in getting New York to join Toronto, Paris, and Beijing in getting horse-drawn carriages off the streets. Good luck and best wishes from me and all your pals at PETA!

Nice work, Pam! Boarding a horse-drawn carriage in a busy city like New York City is as senseless as playing a game of Russian roulette. City noises such as construction, loud music, and even car horns easily spook horses, putting not only horses but also passengers, car drivers, and pedestrians in danger.
Conditions are very cruel for these working animals. Horses are exposed to drastic weather changes and a lack of shade during summer months, and they often do not receive veterinary checkups on a routine basis. Consider this: If you dislike walking on the hot sand during the summer, you better believe that working horses don't enjoy stepping on the city asphalt—which can climb up to 30 degrees warmer than the ambient air temperature. Then try breathing exhaust fumes as you pull a cart.

Pammy, you are simply adorable and such an amazing Animal Activist. This is a wonderful letter. Let's hope the powers that be will read it and take action. We watch very little television, but I am most definitely going to watch your reality show.

Hooray for Pam! I've always been disturbed by horse-drawn carriages, especially when I spent a year working in Old City, Philadelphia, and every day I would walk past the poor horses lined up to draw carriages full of tourists perpetuating the cruelty. I hope that Philly will take notice and also enact a ban!

The BLM has an internet auction for excess horses in their corrals. To bid on line you have to meet conditions. Maybe once the ban is in place the City can arrange a nationwide inter net auction so that the horses have the greatest chance possible of getting permanent retirement homes with caring people. Or maybe there is some other means to accomplish this.

I have the hardest time visiting NYC in the summer these days due to knowing I'll see those horses in the scalding heat dragging those carriages around. It always breaks my heart.

Go Peta, Go Pammy and Go the Internet. I live in Melbourne, Australia and we have the horse drawn carriages where horses drag those carriages around in Summer in temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius and in freezing conditions in Winter. When I was in NYC, I saw the same the thing, anything but romantic, animal cruelty for the sake of a dollar. These animals are better off dead, at least they dont suffer any more.

Excellent, PETA, great job, Pam. How dare we use horses to do jobs that they have done for thousands of years! We need to replace every one of those horse drawn carriages with foreign-oil consuming, toxic fume emitting four door taxis! You guys really know how to fight the important battles, and help out the nation in times such as these, when we all really need mindless bitching about issues as irrelevant as horses working too hard. Nice, PETA. Yet another thumbs up from a fat, barbarous country boy who refuses to eat veggies, because I love insects too much to support pesticides.

Why don't you buy a rickshaw and haul tourists around yourself? Maybe then you'll appreciate what the horses have to endure (like the toxic-fume emitting taxis you mentioned).
NYC has a great subway system, and most people are capable of, and would benefit from, walking moderate distances anyway.

Horse Slaughter Topic
Thoroughbred Industry at it again! Breeding unwanted horses, culling them, then they end up at the "kill lot" to be sent to Mexico for Slaughter. Please spread the word! As of today, 6 stallions and 40 bred mares are reporting to the "kill lot" to be shipped--soon to be illegal if the bill passes--to mexico for slaughter to provide Europeans with their horsemeat appetites. The inhumanity is unfathomable. I'm just trying to get the word out. Thank you for your awareness of the plight of all living creatures. (here's the link spelled out)

can you believe the horse carriage industry actually send a letter to the conflict of interest board to complain about the flowers send to Avella. This industry is so rotten and shamrock stables is housed in a building owned by the board of education. This city is really rotten and I hope no one votes for Speaker Quinn, council member James Gennaro, council member Jessica Lappin and council member Michael McMahon, who brother is the lobbyist for this cruel industry. Hi guys so if all goes well what is the plan in saving all the horses from ending at the slaughter house I know Pam Anderson is really wealthy will she be helping with the horses or what happens to them ? IM just worried that I mean who is gonna save them and how ? Whats the plan ? what if the ban is approved but the owners sell them for meat? Can anybody stop that ...how and who is gonna save them what is the plan? Anybody ?...worry for their lives love Rose.

Well, why dont you all take a different approach. . instead of banning horse drawn carriages totally inact a temperature restriction much like schools have for sports. If the ambient temperature is above xx degrees Horse drawn carraiges are restricted from work. But if toxic fumes are your concern for the horses then why not try and ban cars from the city streets and allow horse drawn carriages to dominate the city streets. But Cruel? Come on while any person who owns an animal of any type can be cruel to them call the overal industry cruel is a gross misrepresentation. I own horses and its been my experience that horses like to work, it's true whether you people want to admit it or not they are a work animal. Now if you want to address the fact that there should be more stingent laws/penalties to those not properly caring for the animals. But if there is no use for the animals no one will breed them which means there is no place for them to go which means the become no more, i.e. extinct. I enjoy seeing the horses it represents possibly a better time in history. So, tackle the vehicle problem in the city to protect the horses and all your agruments are solved. take Care and please come back to reality.

Horses will not become extinct. Horses do not belong in NYC and why would we ban cars. Horses do not belong in cities such as NYC. it is not an natural evnironment. They are not kept in barns or farms but in COMMERCIAL buildings on the SECOND FLoor. Megnus needs to get out of DENIAL.

So, roxanne. . Smog is good horse drawn carriages are bad, is that your point. I beleive when NYC was founded and brought into modernization the mode of transportation was. . . horses. Denial? which ranch have you worked on? How many horses have you cared for? Get some experience and stop watching you tube. I agree NYC is not natural environment for any thing. Oh and barns can have more than one floor, just FYI. If you actually read and comprehended my post and not reacted, you would have seen that acknowledged that there is need for restrictions. Why would you ban cars well, since they are the polluters and are causing the danger for the horses as you said "traffic" just eliminate the source of danger. Extinct. .yes extinct. . many of the breeds used for drawn carriages have no other purpose. not all but many. The draft horse from light to Heavy are drawn carriage pullers. And with machines filling more and more of their roles there is becoming less a need for them. No need equals not profittable to breed and care for equals no more horses. A draft eats 2-3 times more than the normal riding horse. So, good luck hopefully you get a clue. Last entry here Peace!
