This morning, The Today Show ran a fluff piece that literally made my skin crawl, and the complaints started pouring into our office—and for good reason! The show glorified alligator "harvesting" and called it the "deadliest catch, Florida-style." By alligator harvesting, they really mean alligator slaughtering, but harvesting sounds just oh-so-much comfier. To wrap your head around what we're saying, check out our own video footage from the "glamorous" world of the alligator harvest, and spot the difference between that and, say, the Vermont apple harvest:

Luckily, we've got some wicked smart and compassionate folks working at PETA, like our Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. Lisa fired off this fantastic letter to Today Show correspondent Kerry Sanders, who covered the story this morning. In the letter, Lisa said, "If people want to buy handbags and shoes made from [alligators'] skins, we think they should know exactly how the animals were killed and what better vehicle than Today?" All too true, Lisa. Hopefully, Today will respond, but until then, check out this compelling ad, and say sayonara to the exotic skins in your closet.

No faces shown of course.
What a pity. If I ever ran in to one of these monsters I would have grabbed the nearest weapon of choice and beaten the life out of their filthy bodies.

But I am a person of great peace!

Peace for all animals!

I'm once again disgusted by what I see. It's funny though, in the non-comical sense, that most cruelty to animals whether it's alligator slaughtering, or skinning animals alive, or game hunting, etc....is all done by MEN. Women wouldn't be able to wear furs or buy leather goods or eat meat for that matter because women would never do this to an animal. And if a women does (which I'm sure there are some out there) there just as warped.

I could just puke watching that video. I really don't get the mentality of some people. How could they possibly think smashing an animal's head in is right. DISGUSTING

Shame on the Today Show! A few months ago they had a segment glorifying a shark hunt that was purely for sport. It was horrible to watch. They continually run these horrible pieces about animal cruelty- I wish they would realize that it is not good TV. Great job PETA for calling them out on it!

Wow...

I found the video of the Today Show report featuring alligator slaughter at

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/25510335#25510335

This is sad. NBC is like the worst station beside CBS. Remember the fur sales at Shop NBC?

Posted by: Ryan | July 4, 2008 10:22 AM

I'm sorry to disagree with KT but there are a lot of women who are cruel to animals. They like to hunt too. I've seen them discussing this on tv. I was watching the old tv show What's My Line on the Game Show Network and one woman's line was she was a gorilla hunter. Nice! Of course that was many years ago and wouldn't be tolerated now but men aren't the only animal butchers. Some women can be also.

as a long time vegan and PETA supporter, i was already aware of this horrible practice. however, i followed the link posted by ryan to watch the NBC footage and was horrified and saddened. two things that bothered me the most were when the woman who is a "biologist"(all the while smiling) spoke about how these mother-to-be alligators were defending their eggs indicating that they knew these were their offspring and the end when the host referred to this as alligator "harvesting". shame on NBC for glorifying this horrible practice and shame on the "biologist" for not taking a stand for the alligators. keep up the good fight PETA!

KT, you are a sexist fool. First of all, huge loads of women hunt here in the U.S., and huge loads of women skin animals alive in Asian countries. Huge loads of women do every kind of cruelty both to animals and to other humans, even doing atrocities to their own children. So open your eyes to the real world. In fact, in my personal experience, I have met far more caring males than females, far more.

hey guy if you dont approve my comment, you are allowing nut jobs like Judith to make your Peta cause look like trashy hysteria.

GOSHl,what horrrible people. WHY ON EARTH WOULD PEOPLE USE ANIMAL CARKAss in fashion. GO PETA< STOP THOSE BASTARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Rory | July 5, 2008 02:42 AM

Humans do not understand other animals. They think it is okay to capture, torture, slaughter, kill them because they look different than us. They are too ignorant to see the massive error in their perception. Thank you for being on top of the VAST human ignorance and cruelty in this world PETA.

Posted by: vegan4animals | July 5, 2008 11:11 AM

Hey I agree with KT. The human male gender is why animal cruelty exists. It has everything to with testosterone which causes aggression and a need to dominate. The ultimate act of domination is killing. We need to change this society from a patriarchal one to a matriarchal one to end the animal cruelty. Those few women who hunt are doing so because they are caught in a patriarchal paradigm. They have been taught by patriarchy that killing animals and bashing their heads in make them appear "strong" and "tough". Obviously these women are your lowest IQ women with higher levels of testosterone and the men who do these acts of cruelty and brutality have equally low IQ's. Animal cruelty will end when stupid people start thinking and obtain something more than "dull perception". With heightened perception (intelligence) comes empathy. When a man realizes that he takes life from others because his testosterone levels drive him towards aggression, which he may legally unleash with weapons in an activity called "hunting" on helpless animals in this crude society...when he can figure that out, he has taken his first step towards self awareness. Look around you at patriarchy...football, gangs, hunting, wars, military, ...the proof is right in front of you.

Revan,

Read the disclaimer on the right. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

I am disgusted that these so called "humans" can be so brutal to living creatures like that! I for one, think that they are not at all human, because I think that humans would be more HUMANE to animals and all living things. I know that I would not be able to kill an animal and sleep that night. Or the next night, or the next night, or any other time after that!! It's just horrific!!

Posted by: Shiloh | July 6, 2008 07:23 PM

I don't think that anyone should be fighting on here. At least not with eachother. . . I THINK THAT WE SHOULD ALL BE FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHTS OF OUR ANIMALS!! Who's with me! Who holds protests? I do! And my next is on Wendesday, July 9, at 5:30. If anyone cares to joing me. It's in Desert Hot Springs. Feel free to come if you live near. You may, if you wish, remain anonomous, if you attend this protest. But first, you should know the facts. I am going there because they abuse their chickens. They give them hormones to make them practically all chicken breast! I can't believe it! The chickens are so packed with hormones that they can't walk most of the time!! I found this out ON Peta so I'm pretty proud of Peta. Please come. I, myself, remain anonomous. Thank you.

Posted by: Shiloh | July 6, 2008 07:42 PM

Heres the thing. Men may be doing the slaughtering but women are doing the buying. Anyone who wears an animal is no different than the one who kills it. In my opinion, if you are going to have the nerve to wear it you better have the nerve to kill it.
People are cruel because they can be,that will never change. Shame on the Today Show.

revan,
Judith is hardly a 'nut job'. She knows the great effect of juxtaposing 2 contradictory statements ('beaten the life out of their filthy bodies' and 'being a person of great peace')
And really, how many people go on and on about how 'they love animals' while 'chomping down on their brutalized flesh' without being aware of their contradiction.
Judith is bright and right to the point! And has a keen sense of humour.

Actually, in a recent PETA investigation, FOX News reports that "WOMEN laugh as they castrate one piglet after another without anesthesia or painkillers.

'One female employee told me that was her stress relief for the week,' said the PETA investigator, who spoke to FOXNews.com on condition of anonymity. "That's the type of PERSON doing those jobs. ... The treatment of the baby pigs shook me the most."

Dr. Breen: please don't start to be a little sicko wacko!

Posted by: The Artuful Doctor | July 7, 2008 11:10 AM

Lynda,
You know me so well!
Love, and Great Peace to you!

Peace for all animals!

Posted by: Judith | July 7, 2008 02:07 PM

Sounds to me like we have a Sybil on this board.
I do believe once again that Cochran and Breen are one of the same two little bully's. Do you "two" ever give up? Such sad characters you are.
GO AWAY!!!!!

Peace for all animals!

Posted by: Judith | July 7, 2008 06:27 PM

Breen...you have no point. You're just threatened and a little scared. Maybe your on the verge of realizing that you really do care about animals and are about to jump off the cliff (this is a metaphore sp?) to supporting animals right to life. It is always darkest right before the dawn. My own awakening was difficult and still cuases me confusion. Trying to fit in a new perspective after being raised with a traditional view is not easy. But blaming people who care is not going to change the fact that great harm is done to animals by people in ignorance. And really much of it for no real benefit to humankind. It is a challenge to accept this and look at your own life choices. THe one thing we can all do is be responsible for what we consum and promote. Humans do not adapt unless they are pressured to do so. PETA creates pressure and changes are the result.

Posted by: joanna | July 7, 2008 09:01 PM

Same to you, Judith.
Keep fighting for freedom for all animals!

Posted by: lynda downie | July 7, 2008 11:58 PM

Wow, this is really turning into a male vs. female thing regarding cruelty, isn't it? What you have to understand is that it isn't so much the gender of a person that drives them to cruelty, but rather their own unique sick mentality and the way he or she was raised.

I didn't see the Today show thing on alligators, but I still find Animal Planet's "Miami Animal Cops" showing the big, brave alligator hunter going after the gators that "threaten" human habitats and the bottom line is that gators over a certain length are going to be "euthanized". Really nice.
We confiscate animal habitat and then blame them when they try to keep on living there, or kill them when they try to come back or co-exist with us. Now, because gas prices are high, there's renewed talk of drilling in the Arctic, and the hell with the polar bears. We're all for remedying global warming, as long as it doesn't require us to, say, give up meat. Human beings are the most destructive species on earth. And as if that isn't obvious enough, TV exploits this as "entertainment." MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, who should know better, still shows that clip of the bear who fell out of a tree and landed on a trampoline. The bear obviously hurt himself, but this is presented as funny. Yeah. Ha. Ha.
The wild horses of the plains are going to be captured and killed (again) because they're a threat to the ranchers, who are raising cattle to kill, of course. Ringling Bros. still keeps elephants hostage. And in the recent floods in the Midwest, farmers let hundreds of pigs drown because they were water-logged and, thus, not "fit for food" anymore. Some of the farm animals were rescued, most weren't able to be helped. Is this EVER going to end? When? How?

It's sad when lonely, (new age) {feminists, and the like} turn to sites like this to share their agnst against the world {ive seen before}.

Breen, Then why in hell are you here all the time? Oh I see, you are, {lonely} and {new age}. Got it! You are a riot!

Peace for all animals!

What's the difference between the Vermont apple harvest and an alligator harvest? Apples and alligators are both living things. PETA discriminates based on kingdom. For shame.
