Free Handcuffs With Every KFC Order?

During our KFC Naked Truth demo tour, PETA campaigners encountered one bossy spectator—and he was a cop! Let me start by saying that our campaigners are trained, professional, and passionate (plus they know how to rock an eye-catching demo), and they always check local laws before every demo to make sure we abide by the city's regs. Colorado Springs was no different, yet a serious party pooper might be lurking behind every corner—a person who perhaps didn’t appreciate being forced to think about his or her meat consumption.
As the demo started, the ladies stripped down to bikinis and held a sign around their bodies (to create the illusion of nudity—I mean, what's hotter than a little mystery?) stating, "The Naked Truth: KFC Tortures Chickens." All was going well as the passersby received important literature and information about KFC (not to mention a visual that could get them through the rest of their day), but then the party got officially crashed when a particular police officer showed up.

Mr. Officious, the man with his back to the camera, threatened the girls with citations for public indecency and demanded that they drop their sign (excuse me?) so that he could see what they were wearing behind it. The girls assured him that all their naughty bits were covered, but the officer wouldn't take "No!" for an answer. He demanded that they follow him and get dressed behind a blanket, snickering all the while (he was snickering, that is!). The girls were polite and complied.

After the girls got dressed, they had their information taken down by the police and the whole shebang ended with the other officers telling the first officer that it wasn't a violation. Right—they knew that! The "bad cop" left, but one "good cop" stuck around a bit, took a leaflet, and said he would check out our Web site to see what this demo was all about. The demo still affected him ... score! Not to mention, the police action drew a large crowd of inquisitive folks (including a local KFC employee) who took our literature and became super interested in challenging their KFC ways.
Currently, PETA's legal eagles are reviewing the details and photos and deliberating about taking action on our First Amendment rights, so we'll let you know if anything more comes of this. But for now, I'd just like to say thanks to the Colorado Springs police—a lot of folks now know the naked truth behind KFC.

Oh brother! These cops are makeing a mountain out of a mole hill! The girls were wearing bikinis in the summer!! Granted Colorado Springs is one of the most conservative bastions in the nation, still the protest is innocous!!

Great job! I'm from Colorado Springs and a PETA member. Unfortunately I am in Iraq right now and couldn't be there for the protest. I also know several of the CSPD guys from my job. I am an MP in the Army. Most of them are good guys. They just don't deal with this type of call everyday.. Great work, I wish I could have been there.

Go PETA! I have boycotted KFC for years! Colorado cops need to concentrate on real criminals and not pretty activists who are only trying to prevent animal cruelty.

What a joke... this is what makes me want to vote "no" when it comes to deciding whether we need more police officers or not in my community. They must of had too much time on their hands thats for sure!

I say, '' take the cops warrant cards away, and their balls would drop off.''
Posted by: keith | July 15, 2008 01:35 PM
Getting nekid for anything is worthwhile. Dern cops.
Anyway, thanks to the chicks with more balls than me. I really would like to get nekid for the cause, but I think it would prove disastrous.... 'cause, uhhh, you know, like, people would want me, an stuff, yeah....

getting naked to protest kfc is just dumb. peta loses respect when they do stupid things like this.
Posted by: farah | July 15, 2008 06:12 PM
amerika is a police state, and this is proof positive. A peaceful demonstration gets shut down by an anal cop because the powers that be don't approve. There is no greater good here this is harassment plain and simple. The protestors civil liberties have clearly been violated.

Wow, look at all those cops! I'm sure they needed FOUR ARMED OFFICERS to take care of a half naked woman, LOL!
Oh well, maybe donuts weren't good enough for them that day.
Just kidding, I'm sure they were just responding to a KFC manager who probably wanted the heat taken off. I hope the heat stays on, though, so chickens won't have to have their beaks seared off with a hot knife any more.

I wholeheartedly urge you to take action. I personally have been victimized, discriminated against, jobs housing, assaulted. I have filed numerous actions. So many incidents I would need a legal secretary to get to them all or spend my days at the law library.
I like to talk about animals and I hang pictures sent from the magazines. It is a fearsome thing; confronting meateaters.
This is my religion. And if you would, say, give my kid (if I had any) a hot dog, I would file an action for violating my religious freedom.
This is not only a battle for hearts, but it is a legal battle as well.
Carry On Fine Soldiers!

And let me quote Howard Lyman; "Free speech is not free."
Let's not forget the Shac7. The SHAC7 are 6 activists and a corporation, Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, that have been found guilty of multiple federal felonies for their alleged role in simply campaigning to close down the notorious animal testing lab. Five of the individuals are currently in federal prison.. They are not accused of actually smashing windows or of liberating animals or even attending demonstrations rather reporting on and encouraging others to engage in legal demonstrations and supporting the ideology of direct action.
Jonah Larrama a traveler and Food Not Bombs and animal rights activist is being held at the Northwest ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] Detention Center in Tacoma WA on a petty charge of trespassing.
There is no question that the law-abiding PETA protesters right to peaceably assemble has been violated, and was the protesters right to free speech.

?!
So, a family of, say, four, with youngun's, goes to KFC. People do that. I think there's worse things on the planet than that but I know some of you don't so bare with me.
Little kid's walking along "Dad! There's a naked lady!"
New family comes along. "DAD! SHE GOT NO CLOTHES ON!"
Next family comes along with Mom shielding her son's eyes.
They're gonna complain to the manager cause GENERALLY, their children aren't subjected to nakedness at supper time.
Manager is of course gonna call the cops.
Cops are gonna come out. They're men. If you say "naked women on the sidewalk", more than one are going to want to see it.
And in ALL this...I think the point of your protest is kinda missed.

Great post, Maya!
Yeah, Mr. Officious just HAD to see for himself if the girls, indeed, were nekid. It's a dirty job but somebody's got to do it. Uh -huh!!
