It's like a plot out of a cheesy Lifetime movie or, better yet, a sleazy episode of Maury Povich's talk show: Teen Girls Forge Pregnancy Pact. Man, now that would make a great headline. Oh, wait, it is a headline!
Yep, if you haven't heard yet, 17 Gloucester, Massachusetts, high school students may have formed a pact to get pregnant. And parents say teenagers can't follow through on anything....
Well, while everyone else is trying to figure out who did what or how or why—or whom, for that matter—we thought it'd be a good time to toss in our own two cents. Obviously, this town could use a little more sex education and a little less scandal ala the likes of Jamie Lynn.
So we thought maybe this sleepy fishing town could use a little "Sex Talk"—PETA style! Our PSA, which highlights the importance of spaying and neutering to prevent unwanted births—will air nationally during CNN's Anderson Cooper 360° show. Take that, unprotected sex!
As ill-conceived as the decision may have been for these girls to get pregnant, they at least had a choice, unlike the countless number of female cats and dogs left unspayed and forced to fend off every male animal for miles around when they go into heat. It's anything but a good time.
Hopefully, a little national attention will show that it's about as insane to allow cats and dogs to have litter after litter of babies as it is for teens. And, well, if it reduces the number of teenage girls getting paternity tests on The Maury Show, well, I guess that's good too.

I love this - an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure, especially when the cure is at best lethal injection of a healthy but homeless animal.
Help me with this though - how can I convince my friend that she should neuter her dog when she is stuck on thinking neutering him will be "taking away his manhood"? Like every other person with an unaltered dog she is sure everyone will want one of his puppies. I can't get through to her - help!

its doesn't strip their manhood in fact they act just the same as they did before. they will be sore for a couple days after they have surgey, but in the long run it reduces the amount of strays.

I disagree slightly here. Yes, it is not a good idea to have children if you do not have a steady homelife, but SOME people DO get married as teens and get pregnant and have wonderful happy lives. I found the man of my dreams at 19 and was pregnant 3 weeks later, married 2 months after that and we are very happy almost 2 years later and will always be that way. There are people out there that are responsible as teens,

Phyllis,
How great that you are doing this for the animal community.
First, tell your friend that she is not taking away his manhood, because HER DOG IS NOT A MAN! He is a dog.
Tell her that she can call any veterinary professional and they will tell her that neutering him will keep him healthy. It prevents aggression, fighting, roaming and it is amazing at preventing reproductive cancer.
And take her to an animal shelter if you get a chance - they will set her straight!

Phyllis, it sounds like your friend is ignorant of the problems she is creating. By refusing to sterilize her pet, she is contributing to pet overpopulation. Take her on a tour of your local animal shelter. Show her the homeless animals. Tell her that those animals are there because of people like her. Tell her that many of those animals will die because the homes they deserve are being taken up by her dogs puppies. Then tell her that after her dogs puppies grow up and are not so cute anymore, they too will end up abandoned at an animal shelter or worse.
Does neutering a man take away his "doghood"?

My boyfriend and i have a half pit half shepard mix. He heard that if you get them spayed after their first heat that there is a higher risk of breast cancer. is it true or false?

According to Drs Foster and Smith:
The risk of malignant mammary tumors in dogs spayed prior to their first heat is 0.05%. It is 8% for dog spayed after one heat, and 26% in dogs spayed after their second heat.It is believed that the elimination or reduction of certain hormonal factors causes the lowering of incidence of the disease in dogs that have been spayed.
