Puppy-Tossing Marine Expelled!

In March, a video surfaced on online showing a smiling Marine throwing a live puppy off a cliff while another Marine laughs. People everywhere were outraged, PETA was immediately flooded with calls and e-mails from people who wanted to know how they could help get justice for the puppy.
PETA's Emergency Response Division immediately contacted the Commanding Officer at Marine Corps Base Hawaii urging strong action on this case. In addition, we launched an online action alert, which allowed tens of thousands of outraged people to share their feelings with Marine Corps officials and ask for court-martials and severe penalties for those involved.
Today, we received the long-awaited results of the Marine Corps' investigation. According to news sources, the soldier shown tossing the puppy has been expelled, and another Marine in the video apparently faces disciplinary action. A big, big thanks to everyone who took action and let the Marine Corps know that cruelty to animals is never acceptable—no matter who the abuser is.
PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch has these strong words on this matter:
The Marine Corps is right to expel David Mortari and discipline the other Marine who was involved in videotaping the pitching of a tiny puppy off a cliff in Iraq. We only wish that Mortari could face a proper trial; courts all over the U.S. sentence animal abusers to jail time nowadays—and such a punishment would certainly be in order here. Mortari embarrassed the U.S. and its military, and we hope to see his dismissal send a strong message that cruelty to animals simply will not be tolerated in our military ranks.
And here are my words:
Puppy torturers and people who perpetuate the torture of animals deserve to rot in prison.
- Joel Bartlett

Justice for that animal! Cruelty to all of god's creatures is wrong.

These are the people who are fighting for our country? The marine who was laughing should also be kicked out, he's just as guilty!

Disgusting.

I agree Puppy torture should rot in prison those damn ****

Gosh, so the story is real. I am so sad. : ( It's hard to believe anyone could do such a thing. I know a lot of soldiers are good, though. As always in a bunch there will be many types.

I would love to have this guys name and personal address so I could tell him what I think of him and how happy I am that he got booted out of the Marines!
Posted by: David | June 12, 2008 05:30 PM
I saw the video. It's hard to believe that some one could be so cold. To hear the cry of an animal and feel nothing. I cannot understand what one gets out of causing fear and pain in any creature. It's truly disgusting. Thank God in this case justice was served...sort of. Many think it wasn't enough. It's not over, karma is a bi***. To be so dumb and record the act!!!
Posted by: Christine | June 12, 2008 06:41 PM
he exhibited sheer callousness.. with little no repsect of life (irrespective if the puppy was dead or alive).. appalling!!
with such an attitude.. I expect he would be just as callous and opporutnistic to kill anything or anyone else he should/would come across in the 'course of his duties'..
go.. he HAD to..!
and good riddance!!
Posted by: YF | June 12, 2008 07:14 PM
This is outrage, these man don't deserve to be part of the marines. If they have done this to defenseless creature imagine what they can do or done...to people??

I just heard about this story on my way to work this morning (6/12). I lost my dog who was my best friend a week ago and I couldn't help crying after hearing this story. Innocent animals look to us for companionship and protection, and instead are met with cruelty. This story absolutely broke my heart.
Posted by: Candace Werner | June 12, 2008 07:51 PM
So glad he is not a Marine anymore. That is so cruel. I don't know why some people are so evil. I cried when I heard this.
Posted by: Amy | June 12, 2008 07:59 PM
Nice to have his real name...
That video is disgusting, the noise the puppy makes is horrible! I hope he has a real trial and is awarded the most severe punishment possible."People" like him should be expelled from the human race. What a sorry excuse for human being. If he was classified as an "animal" we could get away with pitching him off a cliff without consequence!
Posted by: Annalena | June 12, 2008 08:00 PM
omg that is so discusting and wrong on so many levels! erg this makes me so mad and really sad at the same time! i hope they go to jail for life...but we all know that wont happen..
Posted by: sam | June 12, 2008 08:37 PM
I saw some pictures taken from that video...glad to see that the marines in question are being punished. I'm embarrassed to see fellow members of the military acting in such a way.
On the same token, please remember that not all service members behave in such a way. There are many airmen, soldiers, sailors, and marines doing good out there both for animals and people. Unfortunately, negative stories always garner more attention than the positive.
Posted by: Diana | June 12, 2008 08:41 PM
Remember reading about the classic "Mars Attacks" cards? We should have a parody, "AmeriKKKa AtaKKKz: Destroying a Dog" and highlighting the cruelty and inhumanity to animals and humans war breeds.

People that do this sort of stuff must be sick in the head or they have no damb feelings. Sickning!
Posted by: melissa | June 12, 2008 09:15 PM
Well, justice has been served....in part. The &^%$# Marine who tossed that poor defenseless puppy over a cliff was expelled, and rightfully so. But the expelling should extend to the clown who was laughing as that poor creature was flung over the cliff AS WELL AS to the idiot who taped the whole thing!!! All 3 are equally guilty in my book and all 3 should be expelled, not thust the one!
Posted by: Karen | June 12, 2008 09:37 PM
They have both embarassed this country and I think they need to spend time in jail.
Posted by: Jen | June 12, 2008 09:53 PM
Toss HIM off a cliff and see how funny he thinks that is!
Posted by: talitha levine | June 12, 2008 10:22 PM
This monster should get some prison time for what he did and his chuckling sidekick too. What a representitive of our country. There is just no excuse for what they did. Disgusting.

I am happy to read, that this digusting guy has been exspelled from the Marines. I am not a violent person, but when I saw that video, I wanted to strangle him, because so much cruelty is unbelievable! He does not deserve better as he did to that poor puppy. Unfortunatley we can not throw him of that cliff, to make him understand how that puppy must have felt!
Posted by: Jasmin Pirkl | June 12, 2008 11:16 PM
Don't sack these bastards. Leave them in Iraq and with a bit of luck they'll get shot!!
Posted by: Louise Fleming | June 12, 2008 11:31 PM
I am glad the marine rid themselves of this parasite that disgraces the uniform and the human race.
Posted by: Roxanne | June 12, 2008 11:49 PM
I want that idiot to get more then expelled from the marines. I want him to rot thus the reason I am here. That poor puppy did not deserve that crap. I know the marines work hard and all military over there does, but that is out of control. I think his little buddy needs to be expelled also because at that age you would be able to stand up for what is right. I want to throw them both over that cliff.
Posted by: Samantha | June 13, 2008 12:31 AM
thank God! I remember seeing the video last hear and it not only made me cry but it haunted me for months. i own shih tzus and the thought of anyone hurting them makes me cry just to even think it. I'm glad this moron is getting what he deserves and I'm sure God will punish him further
Posted by: yossi | June 13, 2008 12:52 AM
At least there was some recognition by the Marines that what he did would not be tolerated. Real justice, though, would be for him to experience the same powerlessness in the face of a cold-hearted bully. Not so funny then!
Posted by: lynda downie | June 13, 2008 01:15 AM
Torturing animals is the same as torturing people. They are characteristic of rapists and murderers. Throwing these heartless, cruel criminals out of the marine corp is just not enough. They should be thrown off the face of the earth.

I'm so glad that that this marine got expelled from the military, he is a disgrace to this country and his buddies also. There was another video that surface showing a a couple of militry men in Iraq, throwing rocks at a dog that had only three legs and they where laughing about it. They also show a video of some service men also in Iraq throwing a granade at some sheep on the side of the road, and they where laughing about it. I don't know we sent on troops over there to torture animals this is really disgusting.
Posted by: Teresa Sedillo | June 13, 2008 04:23 AM
Thank god SOMETHING was at least done -- I was so scared that nothing was going to be done for this poor animal. I still wish it was something much harsher though.
On another note.. It was confirmed that the video was real?... I remember when it came out it was said that PETA was investigating if it was real or not... When I brought myself to watch it I just kept telling myself that it had to be fake.. The cry from that innocent animal was the worst thing I've ever heard.
Posted by: Monika | June 13, 2008 06:06 AM
This is just a total disgrace. This lower than life so called human should have charges pressed against him and he should spend prison time. Very sick man and he should be put away. Just being expelled isn't good enough.
Posted by: Jan | June 13, 2008 08:29 AM
i am so glad that coward has been expelled, i wept when i saw that video it broke my heart, i wish i knew where he lived i would go and find him and show him what i think of him.
Posted by: louise gerrard | June 13, 2008 08:58 AM
This was the most heartless video I have ever seen. I hope when he gets back to the U.S. he will get a reception he will never forget! I think everyone who encounters him will taunt him until he goes mad and throws himself off a cliff! Then there will be justice for that innocent puppy.
Posted by: Will | June 13, 2008 09:04 AM
Hey, just consider the puppy aborted. You guys are pro-choice right?
Posted by: Rob Camarota | June 13, 2008 09:21 AM
When I looked up his name I found some other very disturbing information on http://www.golivewire.com/forums/peer-pteiso-support-a.html there is a link below his statement that I can't even think about clicking on but it is something that needs to be checked out and flushed out http://valleywag.com/363325/five-youtube-videos-show-american-soldiers-at-their-worst
I am disgusted. I am a veteran and I could not even imagine why someone would do anything like this. These guys have ALOT of issues, this is not the norm of anyone serving in the military. This guy is sick and in need of mental help.
Posted by: Leslie | June 13, 2008 10:54 AM
we have his name, what city is he in? the newspaper there should have frequent adds (I would pay for some) so that his friends and family have frequent reminders about how brave and they raised thier son.
Posted by: Monty | June 13, 2008 12:05 PM
When I first saw that video, I made myself believe it wasn't real. It's just... why would anyone want to do that? :(
Considering that the military have a duty to protect the defenseless as well as the honour of their country, I think the marines have done the right thing in removing this...man from their ranks.
Posted by: Rachel A | June 13, 2008 12:34 PM
Rob, you are extremely insensitive. Do not assume anything about the people on this site. We hold many different belief systems but share the common goal of protecting animals. There are also some differences between the vague term "abortion" and pitching a baby of any species off of a cliff.
Posted by: Annalena | June 13, 2008 12:38 PM
These Marines should be put to death. What a disgrace to throw a sweet and defenseless puppy off a cliff. Some human beings make me sick.
Posted by: Barbara | June 13, 2008 12:41 PM
You people call yourselves peace loving individuals! What a bunch of crap! What the Marine did was wrong and the punichment he got is justifiable. Having a dishonarable discharge from the military will make it very dificult for him to find employment. He will continue to be punished for the rest of his life.
I forgave this Marine for what he has done. You all should do the same. We all make mistakes and we all have lapses in judgement. So get off you self-righteous high horse and think about your sins as well.
Whats more evil? What this Marine did or people on here wishing for his death?
He who has not sinned may cast the first stone!

Hopefully this hillbilly will not be coming back to his homeland here in the U.S. to engage in government-sanctioned abuse like this- the hillbilly puppy millers.
This crap is right here living in America doing things like this to puppies, and the USDA gives them grants!

I just saw this on the news for the first time June 12, 08. It was horrific and I immediately wrote and called everyone I knew so we all would do something about it. This guy deserved a worst treatment for his actions because he'll probably go out and do something unreal like this again! LOCK HIM UP! He's a killer! And the same for the guy that was laughing ....THEY BOTH ARE KILLERS AND SHOULD BE THROWN OFF THE CLIFF AS WELL!!! This story sickens me. ALL animal abusers should be dealth with a very strong hand...I hope we find them all one day so all pets can have a chance.
Posted by: JO | June 13, 2008 01:20 PM
I just saw the clip on the news yesterday and cried (this was w/o the volume - I am reading these posts where people are talking about the awful cry that the puppy makes and now I'm even more disturbed). I wish there was something else that could be done to these cowards besides just expelling them from the marines. I'm sure he's ashamed and upset that he's been expelled, but as far as i'm concerned, he got off too easy!! I hope he and his two other sidekicks rot in hell. I am so angry and saddened by this.
Posted by: Stacy | June 13, 2008 02:29 PM
re 'Rob's comment..
is that your attitude.. someone or somethign meets a very violent, painful and frightening death.. and you say 'oh just consider he/she/it was aborted'..
are you for REAL????? I hope I'm not going to say the same thing to you when someone close or dear to you dies or passes a way.. how would you feel if someone said that to you?.. or any other living creature human or animal that met a terrible, premature and violent death?
yes that's how preposterous you sound!!
Posted by: lizbeth | June 13, 2008 02:57 PM
I personally believe all three men should not only be expelled from the armed forces but face criminal charges. I saw the clip on CNN today and even the reporters think he should be charged with animal cruelty. It appalls me that anyone could find enjoyment at the fear and suffering of another living being. Hearing the cry of that poor animal and the fear ....breaks my heart. People treat animals like their have no feelings or worth at all. No care if that poor puppy was dead or dying a slow and painful death . They should throw this wanker off a cliff and see just how funny it is.
I think we should all ban together and rally for criminal charges of animal abuse against ALL THREE MEN. The other guy laughed it up and the other had no problems video taping it...they are just as bad as the jerk who actually tossed the dog over the cliff!!!!
Posted by: Heather | June 13, 2008 03:14 PM
I think this M-F'er should have his head blown off while someone else videos it! This guy has some mental issues! They say cruelty to animals is where a "killer" begins his path to destroying human lives. If I were a relative or friend of his, I'd better WATCH OUT!

To Rob Camarota:
I suppose you are pro-life, which is obvious with how ignorant you are about science. A fetus that is less than 12 weeks old is not a living being. In fact, fetuses have no 'life' or nervous system until they are past 6 or even 7 months old.
Posted by: Domino | June 13, 2008 08:38 PM
It's so horrible that people get away with this crap! That was a living breathing BABY! I have a puppy and anyone that would hurt him would not live to tell about it!
Posted by: Ivy Green | June 13, 2008 09:54 PM
Well, good to see partial justice served. The military will always (to some degree) protect their own, and therefore he will not face a real court of law. I was absolutely *MORTIFIED* to watch this dough-head and his loser cohort partake in this vile, abject cruelty against this defenseless little creature. What a goon. But alas, the scarier part of this equation, is that we've equipped this "sh!t-for-brains" with god complex and an AK-47 to go out and "protect" our free nations. We do more damage to ourselves, and the countries we send these people to, when we allow these types of people into the military. Don't marines have to go through intense psychiatric evaluations to be admitted. Gawd....put a freakin' straight jacket on this loser, lock him in a padded cell and feed him beetles.
Posted by: kacey | June 13, 2008 10:36 PM
Um, Kurt K., I think it's more evil to actually hurt a living being, so why don't you shut the fuck up. Good for you for having "forgiveness". I'll forgive you for being a fucking moron.

Rob Camarota: That's a ridiculous thing to say. I am 100% pro-choice, but would never advocate throwing a baby off a cliff and neither would any other pro-choice person I know. Besides--this blog is about the death of an innocent puppy. Don't try to minimize that.

What a sickening act! He deserves to experience the same terror that poor little dog was put through. Simply being kicked out of the marines is not enough of a punishment.
Posted by: Troy | June 14, 2008 06:20 AM
Terrible, unexcusable tragedy! My outrage wishes that someone would throw all 3 of these marines off a cliff as well! But that is not for me to decide, I do have religious beliefs however that make me believe they will some day have their turn! Let's not all label our U.S. Marines this way, let's remember that the vast of majority of our military do not condone this type of behavior. Let's not take for granted those that have sacrificied and continue to sacrifice to defend out nation. It is my opinion that the Marine Corps have their own way of policing up this kind of garbage within their organization. Be aware and keep fighting to stop animal neglect and abuse!

re KK comment..forgive him?.. let's see.. hmm v. difficult..how do you forgive someone who showed a very evident and callous streak?.. remember lest you forget.. a leopard never.. or nigh near impossible to change it's spots..
ugh.. if this marine was walking along the street.. frnakly I'd prefer to cross over the road and walk on the other side..
can you imagine him one day with children and he buys one of them a pet dog and then he goes on to say.. 'hey kids.. you know what ..? Daddy once working as a marine found a poor lost little puppy and guess what I did?.. yep.. I just threw it off a high cliff?' becuase I thought it woudl be 'funny' for a laugh.. the kids will turn their heads.. look up at him.. wordless..
yes.. exactly..

This is to Barbara. If he did this to a puppy imagine what he might do to a person? He could have gotten away with it because he was a marine so he could say it was in defense! And who really gives a shit if he can't get a job again, he didn't consider the puppy, so why consider him? I'm not saying he deserves to die, but why would you want him to be in a position of power if he is obviously cruel and violent?

After seeing this on the news this evening I was beyond mortified. It made me sick to my stomach. It is so sad that behavior like this still exists in the world. This man deserves any punishment that he gets. To kill an animal that probably came to them seeking protection. I can barely stand thinking about it.

Right on, Antigone 1000, to both posts.

Being expelled from the marine is not enough, something more serious should be done to this soldier.
"You are such a disgrace, idiot!"
Posted by: Chloe Tan | June 16, 2008 08:19 AM
Barbara, what those marines did cannot be excused away as a "lapse of judgment" or a "mistake". One does not hurl a puppy over a cliff to its death by "mistake". They are grown men with the capacity to judge right from wrong. Please do not excuse their horrific actions, which resulted in an animal suffering terror and a horrific death at their hands.
I agree that being expelled and facing "disciplinary action" is not enough. These guys broke the law and all deserve to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Posted by: Isobel | June 16, 2008 07:17 PM
Antigone, again, thanks for the kind words, I always appreciate them!
Also, whoever upi are Rory, thank you too! I just hope I never find out who you are!
Anyway! Antigone, I find it odd that you can give Rob crap about "minimizing" this act becasue he compared it to abortion! I think he was trying to suggest that some on here were pro-choice and yet get upset about the death of a puppy! Being pro-choice and a member of PETA is a totally different arguement for another time!
Anyway, doesn't PETA minimize the Holocaust by comparing Jews and other concentration camp prisoners to chickens! Isn't that insulting to the victims of the worst crime in history!
Posted by: Kurt K | June 16, 2008 08:43 PM
Being expelled from the marines is not enough. That sick bastard should be put in a jail cell. He is deranged, lacks compassion, and is an obvious danger to any animal or person who crosses his path, if he thinks he can get away with it. Does anyone think he wouldn't harm an animal again? And why wouldn't it be a person next time? He has no moral compass, no sense of right & wrong. Thats why we have jail cells.
Posted by: Cate | June 16, 2008 09:03 PM
There must be something seriously mental with this guy. On his MySpace, he says "Leave your intentions in your friend request. I am tired of the hate." On another blog he says he did the dog a favor. I don't know what kind of disciplinary action this idiot received, but I hope it's severe. What a difference between this idiot (I can't even call him a man) and the soldier, Maj. Brian Dennis who befriended a dog named Nubs and brought him back to the States.

Hey Barbara
What happened in ancient times if someone done wrong? You talk of stoning but wrong doers were stoned to death. This was firstly to eradicate the danger of a wrong doer, secondly to show society that a wrong doer will be punished. Its people like you Barbara, who allow rapists and murders to keep violating others, children to be raped and strangled, animals to be tortured and killed. Its people like you Barbara, my dear, who give rights and forgiveness to the evil of this world and mock those who want peace for all those who wish to respect life and live like law abiding citizens. I hope no ill comes to you or yours Barbaram but your tune would soon quickly change if ever something very "nasty" happened to you.
Those who are able to comment extreme acts of violence/torture/abuse should be eradicated. Full stop

I can't believe that you could even begin to compare the Holocaust to the killing of animals!
If you can equate the two in your mind then you are heading into a downard spiral to insanity's oblivion!
Posted by: Kurt K | June 17, 2008 08:42 PM
Kurt K
Wherever I'm headed, I see strong parallels between the treatment of Holocaust victims and animals.
May I ask you, what exactly is it about humans that makes their torture more significant than that of animals in your opinion?
Posted by: lynda downie | June 18, 2008 07:13 AM
Kurt K: No--I don't think the chickens feel insulted.
Posted by: antigone1000 | June 18, 2008 07:21 AM
Lynda
This arguement comes down to human vs. animal suffering. I assume you hold the two in equality, while I believe the two shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.
You use the word torture so loosely when it doesn't describe what chickens go through.
Torture: "any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions."
Chickens and other slaughtered animals aren't tortured, they are just killed! Killing something happens to be painful, its not intentional it is just a by product of the industry. Yes, I would love to see the people who do mean crap intentionally get fired and punished, but that is a small percentage of the workers.
What happened to the Jews and other concentration camps prisoners in WWII was an act or pure hatred and evil. These people were tortured beyond any comparison in the history of mankind!
When you equate the Holocaust to what animals go through, it lessens the severity of the darkest chapter in human history! These people were intentionally killed in an effort to earse them from the face of the earth! That is why you can't compare! Contrast maybe, but never compare!

Both Marines should be punished and tortured until they beg for mercy. Expelling the Marine is not enough for me, he should have a harsher punishment, I will never forget that video and them laughing as the poor puppy was tossed to its death. If that is the only kind of sick entertainment these idiots have over there then they obviously have been over in the war too long. I have lost a lot of respect for the military and that the government would let theses sick individuals into our military and let them fight for our country. I sure do not want those Marines representing my country.

Kurt K: If you can arbitrarily determine that the level of suffering one feels is based on their species, other people can arbitrarily decide it is based on race, religion, gender, whatever. Therefore, if you can decide that the suffering of chickens is of no consequence because of their species, I guess the Germans can decide the suffering of the Jews is of no consequence due to their religion. Stop being such a hypocrite and think about what you say.

Kurt,
Ok, you're right that Jews were the victims of Nazi hatred that wanted them eradicated. Animals are not. True.
But my question was, what is it about humans that makes their(out of respect, I won't use the word 'torture')suffering more signicant than that of animals in your opinion? That is, why should their suffering not be in the same sentence, as you say?

Hope he doesn't have any kids - he would probably pitch them off a cliff, too.
