There’s been a lot of talk about the arrest of 75 San Diego State University students in a drug sting recently, and now that the dust has settled a little bit, we figured it was a good time to let students at the university know why eating meat is far worse for you than smoking pot. We just placed an ad in the school newspaper The Daily Aztec, which shows a close-up of a cow's face next to the tagline "Say No to Pot Roast. Don't Be a Meathead. Kick the Habit!" The ad points out that, while there’s no doubt that getting high can hurt your test scores, people who want to stay away from drugs should stay away from meat, which is often loaded with pesticide residues, hormones, and antibiotics. Meat, egg, and dairy-product consumption have also been linked to heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and cancer. As PETA President Ingrid Newkirk puts it,

"Students probably are putting more drugs into their systems by eating the burgers and chicken salad in the school cafeteria than from anything they smoke. Chickens, pigs, and cows raised on today's factory farms are fed growth-promoting drugs by the bucketful, and that's passed on to consumers by mouth."

So there you have it, kids. Say “no” to pot roast.

hahaha, excellent ad, very catchy! I wish PETA would put something like that in my school's newspaper.

"students probably are..."

so really you're saying you've guessed. well done(no pun intended)

"eating meat is far worse for you than smoking pot." love to see you back this one up.

Can we get leaflets of this ad?

Great ad. We should get this in all university newspapers. Until Americans figure out just how bad meat and dairy is for them, we'll continue to have explosions in obesity, heart disease, and cancer. Way to put things into perspective.

What a great add. I am sure that kids will get a kick out
of it. Also, they are more tuned into nutrition now, than when I was in High School
in the70's. Also I am very hopeful that today's kids will
convert to vegans, if not only
for the welfare of animals and
the nurtitional values, but for our environment! I hope to see the numbers rise, in every demographic!

Why Would I Want To Live A Long life Eating Something I Hate Then Living A Shorter Life Enjoying My Food

I really like that ad. It's cute :)

The ads just keep getting better and better. This one and the recent ads with Tricia Helfer and Mr. Nix, etc., just seem to have higher quality photography and layout. PETA should hold a photo contest for the best animal rights message through photography (have one for straight and one for doctored images).

And cattle farming is destroying the environment and the Earth. Say no to drugs, not to pot roast, and yes to hemp!

Steve,

If you don't want to do it for yourself, how about for the future (and present) inhabitants of the planet, and out of compassion for animals?

And who sez veg food doesn't taste good?

How, PETA is basically encouraging kids to smoke pot! What kind of message is this? Telling kids that eating a steak is worse than doing drups. Young teeenagers may interpret this the wrong way.
Does PETA have to use every headline these days for their own personal use. Equating drugs to eating meat! That is stretching it a bit!

rojo/Jack - Maybe we just need to compare overall health between Americans and those residing in Amsterdam. :)...I'm sure they're MUCH healthier overall then Americans...

I agree that PETA does stretch it sometimes, but sadly thanks to our Short Attention Span nation, this is the way it has to be done. I always just thank the Goddess when PETA keeps it creative and not too harsh.

Maybe they should have emphasized the "drugs really are bad" part more, but they are telling the truth about the crap used in meat production.

Just like chickens crammed into tiny, filthy areas, cows are mistreated and kept in disgusting conditons.

Again, the improper housing of chickens led to a new virus that is contagious to humans, and has the potential to wipe us out. Doesn't anyone here find that just a bit frightening?

If you're not deterred by these gentle mammals being treated like yesterday's trash, you should at least be deterred by the risk of cancer and mad cow disease which, FYI, is no joke.

HannaBanana, I recall reading that use of MJ among the genuine Amsterdamians(?) is well below use rates elsewhere in the world. Possibly because it is no longer ellicit.

Magic mushrooms were the go last I heard- a few deaths from people jumping out windows.

Anyway they tell me pot is quite prolific in the US, so health comparisons might not be definitive.

cheers

I'd eat a 1-lb. pot brownie over a steak any day.

...If I were forced to choose, of course.
