A lot of people were pretty shocked to see this video of a North Carolina state trooper hanging his dog from a railing and repeatedly kicking the animal, who had refused to let go of a toy. Well now Sgt. Charles Jones, who was fired last September after his partner released the cell phone video of this incident, is fighting to get his job back.
In the meantime, PETA is fighting to ensure that the District Attorney in the county where this incident occurred files charges against the sergeant. We're reminding the DA that animal abuse is an indicator of deep mental disturbance and often leads to further violent acts. You can watch the video and judge for yourself who’s got the right end of the stick here.

Should have taken his frustrations out on the real criminals not his LOYAL K9 partner!!

Who can we write to if we want to ensure this pathetic slob doesn't get his job back? Someone with those kinds of anger issues shouldn't be in a position of power.

THE LOVING DOGS ARE SENT INTO HORRIBLE SITUATIONS EVERYDAY, TO CONFRONT BEING STABBED, SHOT AND FOR WHAT FOR THE LOW-LIFE TO TREAT HIM LIKE THAT, WHAT DOES HE ALSO DO TO HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN. WHEN HE PULLS SOMEONE OVER ON A DARK LONELY ROAD, DOES HE BEAT THEM TO. I HOPE THAT HE NEVER HOLDS ANOTHER JOB PERIOD.

He is a criminal. A common criminal.
It would be dangerous for him to be a police officer. He should be in jail.
What happens when he does this to some kid?

I agree this person has anger issues. This person should not have another animal to abuse!!! And no he should not have his job back after what he did to that police dog!!! Thank God for the video. The video showed just what kind of person this police officer was. I hope and pray the police dog is in a safe place!!!! Animals are not on this earth for people to abuse!! They are for us to love and take care of!!!

That breaks my heart. This guy needs to be institutionalized.

What a true macho courageous stud! Tie a dog up and beat it. Now that is a test of manhood.
Do we know what happened to the dog? Is it in a better home now?
I would also like to know who to write to ensure this jack ass doesn't get his job back. He needs to be collecting trash for the city, not protecting citizens against criminals... because he is one!

omg!!!
no!! this creep should not be allowed to have his job back!!!

was this dog his canine 'partner' for police duty/work?
well.. after that kind of treatment.. ie. attacking the dog (after he had tied him up so ensure their was no retailiation of course.. nor could the dog defend himself)..there is no doubt or shred of doubt in my mind.. what this dog now thinks and feels about his 'handler'..
ie. mentally unstable.. irratic, unpredictable .. vile, aggressive and extremely short fused and someone who INTENTIONALLY went out of his way to hurt him.. is this seriously the way to train or 'teach a dog a 'lesson'?.. this officer or whoever he was.. if he did some kind of misdemeanour.. would he like his superiors to tie up to a rail first.. or maybe handcuff him and ankles so he coudlnt' run away.. or defend himself.. and then robustly kick him about HARD including several times severely! up his backside? with hefty boots?
that is exactly what he did to his dog.. he's a despicable cowardly bully of a human being.. hopefully this dog is not paired up with this demented raging angry pent up person anymore.. nor any other dog ..ever.. for that matter.. ..

The guy is a psychopath and should never be reinstated.
Kudos to his partner for not being complicit and looking the other way.

Wow...and I thought Officers loved their dogs...I'm sure some, maybe most, do....but this guy is a TOOL. Question: the person taping this incident via cell phone: why didn't HE stop Charles?...I so would have....even though he's 2x my size. I would have kicked him in the...uhh...you know.
I hope they have one kick ass DA, and that he/she is able to slap Charles big time with a massive dose of Justice!!!!

Who Do We Write To?!??!?!
This Is RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!
These K9s Are The Ones That save OUR Lives And Im Sure He's Saved his "Owners" Life Too!! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING....JOB BACK?!?!?!? Heeeeell NO!!!!

Um, what is the deal with the testimony from Sgt. Allison, a police dog TRAINER, who said he'd kicked his dog "more times than he could count"? On what planet does kicking ANYone - animal, vegetable or mineral - train them to do your bidding? WTF?
Posted by: Aja | May 15, 2008 04:51 PM
yeah i guess this guy was right to take the video but in my opinion the person behind the camera is just as bad for letting it actually happen. he should have told his partner not to and if his partner was still going to he should have recorded his partners voice saying he would beat the dog on his phone and then saved the dog before it actually happened. what is wrong with these people. i know the PETA couldnt save the animals in the slaughterhouse and places like that because they would have to take them away and could get sued or something so im glad PETA took those videos but the people behind the camera in other videos should have stopped it. mabe they themselves couldnt do anything but they could have called someone for help. there is really something wrong with these people who beat their animals. YAY FOR PETA!! this guy is a freak and should be locked up. what is he gonna do next. i hope that dog is in a good safe home right now with people who actually care about him instead of 'teaching him a lesson'. is that really how to teach a dog a lesson? how about love and compassion? thank you PETA for making sure everyone hears about these freaks.
Posted by: bug4peace | May 15, 2008 05:39 PM
A google search of this guys name will bring up a petition at thepetitionsite that can be signed to urge prosecuting this guy. What an absolute sicko. I would like to know how the poor dog is.
Posted by: Jessica | May 15, 2008 09:57 PM
I hope he never is allowed to put on the uniform again ...and should be punished for hanging and beating a fellow officer ..Max sentence PLEASE !!
I would also like this to be applied to the 2 officers now facing trial in Miami Dade ..One of them staved his K9 to death ,,and the other hung and beat his GSD to death..for barking ! With other officers watching !!What's wrong with these psyco's ??!!!PETA ..PLEASE stay on these cases!!!This can not go unpunished !!!
Posted by: leslie johns | May 15, 2008 11:43 PM
Keep on it Peta. This guy needs to face the consequences of his actions.
Posted by: lynda downie | May 16, 2008 01:20 AM
This monster should never be allowed to get his job back. This is exactly the kind of people that police officers should be protecting us against. Our K9 protectors should not be going through this kind of abuse, and it shouldn't be tolerated or overlooked.

This video is rage inducing! I have a really hard time listening to the dog bark every time he is kicked. I would also like to know where this Belgian Malinois is right now? This man has the audacity to claim he "loves" his dog! A lot of the other police officers in the area claimed they use even harsher punishments.I read that the dog in the video was also tasered into unconciousness several times!!! If the police are going to force dogs into service they should have the same rights as other officers. I remember when a man was charged with antagonizing and stressing out a police dog in a cruiser. If these people have to kick "their" dogs to make them listen they should not have them at all.I have seen working dogs abused several times especially seeing eye dogs and it is really sad. A man that beats the innocent should never be charged with protecting them. This guy should be barred against "owning" any animals.Simply Barbaric!
Posted by: Annalena | May 16, 2008 11:34 AM
What is scary is that some of his fellow officers testified that it was NOT abuse. That they kick their dogs also. Appears to be a Dept. wide problem....how sad that a dog that would give his life for his partner would have to take such abuse from same!
Posted by: Craig | May 16, 2008 12:26 PM
to answer to bug4peace..
in all rights.. the other perons shoudl have stepped in and stopped the demented kicking officer.. and suggest he go for 'intensive and prlongued anger management lessons' and not to take out his vile aggressiveness and bullying on animals.. but.. what would that have achieve.. ? next time.. this cowardly bully would prob have done something the same or worse if he felt he was not being 'witnessed' and thus had 'full rein to vent out his anger'.. even more so.. frankly I'm rahter glad.. he was taped.. and his superiors or whoever they were have suspended him or he lost his job.. coudln't have wished for a better outcome.. peopel like him.. are in no way FIT to work WITH ANIMALS.. as has been clearly and evidently seen..
good riddance!

There are problems with these police dogs. At the shelter where I worked, one very kind officer rescued a cat that was being starved to death by its family.
He wanted to keep the cat, but his K9 dog partner spent all night trying to break into the room and kill the cat.
While they are well trained, many of these dogs don't do well in normal circumstances and are trained to be very intense. They aren't normal companions.
I think it's hard to give a dog like this a normal life when they are expected to be ready to attack dangerous criminals at any moment.
Of course this abuser should be in jail, but I also wonder if police dogs should be used in the future - it just seems like such a volatile situation.

Jones is beyond cruel; he should not be allowed further contact with ANY animal EVER again! Maybe PETA could put this issue back on the action alerts. My second letter will be mailed out today.

That ass hole needs to get the same treatment done to him as he did to the dog . Just another example of people who put up a good front only to show how they really are when they think no ones looking or on there own property . Put the guy out of his misery , I'm sure in the long run no one would miss him not breathing anymore . Have a nice day.

I couldn't believe this, for someone who is supposed to upheld the law to be treating a helpless animal in such a way. I didn't see the video I just go by what they say. I think Peta should give us the info so we can contact the District Attorney in that North Carolina county.

I say publish this arseholes home address.I'm sure there's more than one or two decent minded folk in the US that could show him the 'error' of his behaviour.

What a piece of garbage! Man, I would love to see him end up in jail. You want to see justice? Throw a bad cop in jail with a bunch of criminals that he put in there! Or maybe just get him ground up into dogfood for some starving dogs.
But really, one of the reasons I hate to hear this is that I am related to someone who is in law enforcement and things like this make all police officers look bad. And they're not! And I think most K-9 officers really love their dogs. However, from what I have learned about dogs working as canines, I really wonder whether they should be used in that capacity at all. First of all, the dogs are under stress all the time, and it shortens their life expectancy. Also, I watched a show about how puppies end up being part of a canine unit. One good thing is that some dogs are rescued from pounds where they would otherwise be euthanized. But some others, even some bred for the job, end up being euthanized anyway. This is because to some extent, they teach these dogs to be aggressive. But when it doesn't pass the test and doesn't know how to channel it's aggression toward the right situation, then the dog is considered too dangerous for a family pet, and so is euthanized.
Anyway, thanks PETA, for making people aware of this injustice!

Oh my God that makes me sick. If they are not beating people, they are beating animals. He should lose his job.

would he have his job back if he kicked another employee over & over. No! need I say more when it comes to a helpless tied animal. I say it's is worse!

I know this is unusual but, I know everyone that comes to this site loves animals. I want to take this time to please ask everyone to pray for my little bit (my little dog) he is sick and needs your prayers that the Lord will let him get better. He is at the vets right now. We had to leave him so they can see if they can help him. Please pray for him to get better. He is a loving little dog that we took in after he was abanden. This police officer should not have another dog after what he did to his partner his dog. Animals are sooo loving and gives sooo much love to their owners. How could anyone be mean to their animal. Please pray for our baby our little dog Little Bit. And for everyone that prays to God to heal our little dog so we can bring him home we want to say Thank You to everyone for taking the time to pray for our little dog. Thank you and may God bless each and everyone of you. I to would like to know how the police dog is doing. I hope he found a good home.

What??? This is disgusting!!!
Why didn't the person taking the video stop this?? As far as I'm concerned there are two people at fault here... the one who committed this cruel act and the other who stood by and did nothing to stop it. The fact that this was done by K-9 cops makes the crime all the worse. There needs to be accountability and justice; hopefully the DA will come to its senses.
And to think these people take an oath to serve and protect....
How pathetic.

You know what the saddest part about this story is to me. That this wasn't good enough to make national news, or at least for any period of time. (And if it did, I didn't see it.) Nope, instead we are forced into watching mindless footage of some "teen queen" do something like go shopping, get knocked up, or become publicly and humiliatingly intoxicated even when we don't really give a shit about any of that bullcrap. But true stories where things do go wrong, we don't get those. Apparantly most people just don't care anymore. Maybe I'm old fashioned (even though I'm not that old!), but aren't we supposed to care and make things better. Isn't that a burden forced on all of us from youth, or is that just a select few of us who believe in causes. This guy needs some help and some time away from a gun, a badge, and anything that has to do with Peace, Justice, and The American Way. (One great thing that actually came out of this story though, is that everybody who has posted rebuttle comments is in agreement about this one; The guy is sick and that working class hero of a dog deserved much better!) Viva La' Peta.

I'm proud of his partner for turning him in. Lots of people look the other way, but this is ridiculous that a police officer acted this way and treated a poor, innocent animal the way that he did!

What a scumbag ! If he were brave enough perhaps he wouldn't have tied his dog up first . . . I'd like to kick his fat arse 'till he squeals like a 'stuck-pig' . . then i'd kick it some more . . cos he deserves it !

This man shouldn't be able to get his job back, he knew what he was doing hes a police officer, he knew it was wrong.. yet did it anyways? what kind of right does he have to punish anyone else when he wouldn't be getting punished if he got his job back.. egh, sick human being..

How disturbing! This cop deserves to be beat! Dogs have no business being put into these situations! This cop is unethical and cruel! I am outraged. He does not deserve to have his job back. He needs to serve time behind bars with the people that he has arrested. This is unjust! My heart breaks for this dog.

He should not get his job back.
He is an animal abuser, he is no better than other animal abusers who violates the law.
Lot of people will agree if he like others abuses a pet, an animal that loves and trust and protects him, he could abuse a child.

This is horrible. I am literally sick to my stomach. I can't believe he even has the NERVE to ask for his job back. How can a person to expect the citizens to trust him EVER again. This man should be institutionalized or locked up(even better), because there are plenty more animal lovers IN prison that would love to get their hands on him, I'm sure. What an ass. He should never be allowed to be in law enforcement again. How terrible.

So....the trooper wants his job back eh? I think Mr. Trooper should be placed in a padded cell, with a straight jacket on, and administered daily doses of anti-psychotic medication...and leave him there for a very long time. That way, he can think about the abject cruelty he unleashed on that dog. Once out, he should then stand on a street corner with a sandwich sign telling the public what he did. As for returning to his job....he should be banned. There's no place for that type of aggression....especially left in the hands of a guy wearing a badge, and carrying a baton.

Posted by: kacey | May 20, 2008 11:42 PM
I do not believe this man or should i call him something else should never have his job back....where I am from a police dog is still a police officer. I personally know an officer of the k9 unit and his dog is his bestfriend, would you kick your bestfriend.. This dog is still part of the police force and this guy should be charged with assaulting a police officer. There was a Case in Canada recently where a dog was chasing a man who he believed was carrying drugs, the dog chased him and was shot (however the dog survived to be on the force) the man was then charged with attempted murder of a police officer which carries a min sentence of 15 years, that man is still rotting in prison right now and i am glad for it and i think this officer should be put away and throw away the key he is obviously not all there in the head and i agree a padded cell may come in handy as well. I hope the DA does not allow him to have his job back they were right in firing him and it should stay that way. Katie- Sudbury, Ontario Canada

Just to update everyone. "Officer" Jones has been hired by the Apex, NC Police Department! My town! This was announced today and I am absolutely disgusted. Our town manager Bruce Radford stated "We believe in second chances." Our town council meets July 15 and my wife and I intend to go and protest his hiring. It's a sad day for our town.

Thanks for the update Jim. I am disgusted along with you. "Second chances" are meant for board games....NOT lateral transfers like this. Unbelievable!!! Town manager Bruce Radford is an absolute moron, that has nothing but rocks in his head.
