As you’ll be well aware if you live anywhere near here, our area got hit by a tornado yesterday. 200 people were injured, a lot of people had to leave their homes in a hurry, and …here we go again…animals were left behind, plus authorities have refused to let people who tried to go home after work return to their homes. We’ve been rushing around today trying to help those animals out. There’s plenty more info below about what you can do if you live in the area.
PETA, the Virginia Beach SPCA, and Suffolk Animal Control have joined forces to help local tornado victims. Because the storm hit suddenly, many people fled their homes leaving dogs, cats birds and other animals behind.
The Virginia Beach SPCA has set up an emergency response center at the Suffolk Animal Control Bureau, located at 124 Glen Forest Drive in Suffolk. The shelter will be staffed 24/7 to receive animals as long as there is a need.
If you know of an animal in need, whether lost or left behind, please call 757-409-7729, or email info@VBSPCA.com. PETA’s Community Animal Project is available to assist in rescuing animals who are trapped in or under homes and assist in capturing frightened animals running at large.
At least 100 birds have already been displaced by the storm and taken for emergency care. For information on how to help stranded wildlife, please visit VBSPCAWildlife.com.

My heart goes out to Peta, those in need and all whom may have been displaced by the storm.

How tragic!
That would be so painful. I worry about disasters striking my companions when I am not at home. I try to be with them as much as possible. I really feel for those people who were at work.

Wow! Sorry to hear about the tornado. I hadn't heard about it til now-living in western Canada.

This was just awful.
Tornados hit so fast just like earthquakes.
But to see 3 different Animal Rescue groups working together is wonderful.
Divided we fail, so they say.
Familys with any kind of animal needs to be ready.
States need to be ready to place any animal.
During our horrific fires in Calif, in San Diego alone we opened 3 shopping malls with land, for Farm Animals and plenty of food and water.
When humans bounce ideas off of each other, for the helpless, it's amazing what a State can do.
Fantastic job PETA.
Peace,for all animals!

I agree, Judith! So much better to plan ahead. Thank goodness the SPCA and PETA are there to rescue animals!
I'm lucky that I never had to go through a tornado, but on a smaller scale - right before I took my cat home from the shelter where I worked, I arrived to the shelter to see fire trucks - it was a real fire and my cat was inside!
Thank goodness the brave firefighters put it out, but I'll never forget trying to run into the building and being stopped from rescuing my cat!

I am by no means a PETA fan. In fact, I'm the OPPOSITE.
However...kudos on this. Disasters such as tornados and hurricanes are horrible to have to live through, even more so not knowing what has happened to your pet.
Our prayers are with the injured and the displaced.

ok... im glad to hear you guys are helping them... but seriously... 200 people injured? and your helping dogs and cats that can fend for there selves
Posted by: Isaac | May 1, 2008 12:39 AM
Isaac: We're an animal rights group, not the Red Cross. And these animals can't fend for themselves. Domesticated animals trapped in houses without access to food or water, or dogs and cats left out on the streets are completely vulnerable and urgently need attention.
Further, your implied argument doesn't make any sense because it assumes as its main premise that helping animals and people with beloved pets somehow means that the people who are injured won't get the help they need. Believe it or not, sometimes, there's plenty of love to go around. :)
Someone needs to look after the defenseless beings who can't look after themselves. That's where we come in, time after time.

Jack: Great response to Isaac. I once saw a report from the New Orleans floods where a dog was trying to swim in the flood waters and people in a boat (maybe the Red Cross, not sure, but definitely a "human" rescue organization) made no attempt to rescue the dog. When the reporter asked why they didn't help the dog, one man explained that it was not part of their function and, therefore, they couldn't do anything. Ridiculous!! To all those who complain about PETA assisting animals, I would like to say I am quite certain that PETA would not have left any human in such dire straits, despite their focus on animals......
