They’re new to the public eye, so there’s a few little things they’re going to have to learn—but socially appropriate attire is as good a place to start as any. Politico’s Anne Schroeder has the full story, and you can read PETA’s letter to New York’s soon-to-be first lady Michelle Paige Paterson about this photograph below.

Dear Mrs. Paterson,

I hope that this finds you well. As you may know, PETA is the largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 1.8 million members and supporters dedicated to the protection of animals.

We’re writing today after receiving several phone calls and e-mails from our supporters — many of them New Yorkers — who were disappointed to see that you were wearing what appears to be a real fur coat in a photo on this Web site: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0308/8982.html. Please know that animals killed for their fur endure immense suffering and that most fur comes from China, where there are no laws that protect animals on fur farms. A recent undercover investigation of Chinese fur farms revealed that workers swing raccoon dogs and foxes by their hind legs and smash their heads on the ground, injuring them but often leaving them conscious as they are skinned alive.

In light of this information, please consider donating your fur coats to PETA’s fur-coat giveaway program. Every year, PETA holds “fur kitchens” at homeless shelters around the country in which we distribute dozens of free fur coats — donated to PETA by former fur-wearers — to those who have no other means of staying warm. And we’ve even shipped hundreds of furs to help warm the women and children freezing in Afghanistan and Iraq. Although nothing can bring back the animals who were killed in order to make these coats, we believe that this is one way to honor their lives while helping people who so desperately need protection from the cold.

You’d be in great company. Other compassionate women who have participated in PETA’s anti-fur efforts include Charlize Theron, Stella McCartney, Mariah Carey, Kim Cattrall, and Martha Stewart. I can be reached at 323-644-7382, extension 25, or MichelleC@peta.org. Thank you in advance for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Michelle Cho

The oppressed becomes the oppressor. Time to make the connection. I am not surprized she wore a fur coat.

Politicians support cruelty to Animals.

I really hope this is not a real fur, but it probably is. Please take Peta's advice...donate it to their fur coat giveaway program.

What an ignorant idiot. I'm sick of seeing all these rich tourists come to Tahoe in their fur boots and coats. It is not sexy. Nobody that I know wears fur and it's always the rich people trying to show off their status with fur. Sorry to stereotype but it's true.

Posted by: sky | March 14, 2008 07:14 PM

this is america,,,, she can wear what she wants.....
she is a modern woman who does not want to be told how to run her life...what she can't eat or what she can't wear....

especially from an organization that uses so many hypocritical spokepersons.... that their entire credibility is as good as elliot spitzers....

Posted by: common sense steve | March 14, 2008 09:38 PM

What a selfish, self- centered bitch. And you can add stupid to that description if she is so out of the loop on what not to wear.

Posted by: Kelley | March 15, 2008 08:45 AM

Shame on Mrs Paterson to wear such an ostentatious display of bad showy taste and lack of compasion. It doesn't give a good image of her husband!

The '' Grusome Twosome '' springs to mind !

Skanky-skank-skank! Yikes -- good thing this dude's blind.

Posted by: Barbara | March 16, 2008 03:49 PM

I was very disapointed to see her in a fur coat. I knew PETA should do something about this, and it's wonderful they did. I hope she listens-those poor animals need desperate helpl.

Posted by: Laura | March 17, 2008 02:15 AM

Yikes, I hate that coat..Where did she get it, I want to send hate-mail to that store!!??

Posted by: Heidi Breinhild | March 17, 2008 07:41 AM

Judith ( Freedom Fighter for Animals ). Have to say loved that comment : '' Just another fur whore.''

PS. just read Heather Mills McCartney has received a considerable pay out in her divorce settlement. Go to her Peta ! we all know what a brilliant advocate for Animal Reform she is !!

Posted by: keith | March 17, 2008 11:02 AM

Wearing fur does not make you a modern woman, it makes you an insensitive boor. It's just a case of the oppressed being the oppressor. That's hypocrisy!! And being that this is the USA, animal advocates can say what they want about wearing fur. Wearing fur is for the dimwitted fools who have no style or compassion. Women's rights is all about economics---to be able to pursue any employment outside the home and get equal pay. Along with that opportunity is achieving an education on all levels. Women's rights is not about torturing , abusing or wearing animals. The first women advocates also advocated for the other animals (read some history)and the more prominent evolved feminists were vegetarian.

The only hypocrite is you; why don't you donate your own skin to be made into a pair of slippers. Choose your poison: anal electrocution or stomping on your head as they rip your skin off (flay) while you are still conscious.

Posted by: Ana | March 17, 2008 12:38 PM

petaphiles unite.... you have shown why so few people actually listen to you :

sky: " ignorant idiot"
kelley: "selfish, self centered bitch"
judith: : "fur whore"
barbara: "skanky, skank, skank"

lets all curse out a woman you have never met...someone who works with children and tries to improve health care...

and she's the skank.....

I was so excited to support David Paterson when I read about his accomplishments and to know he got this far as a 1) blind 2) black man. And then they showed video of this event on the news. She looks like a huge bear - just as stupid as Mayor Bloomberg's mother in her fur coat at his innauguration. Vanity is so ugly.

Posted by: Jenn | March 17, 2008 02:57 PM

What pisses me off so badly is that Gov. Spitzer who is leaving the Governor's office of New York, is the man that signed the bill into law that electrocution to animals was against the law in the state of New York.

Sunday, 30 September 2007
NY FIRST STATE TO BAN ELECTROCUTION OF ANIMALS FOR FUR

The state of New York has become the first US state to ban electrocution as a method of slaughtering animals raised for fur.
New York state lawmakers and Governor Eliot Spitzer were commended by various animal rights and animal welfare organisations for enacting the first law in the country
to ban electrocution, including anal and genital electrocution of animals raised to become fur coats and fur-trimmed garments.
Governor Spitzer signed the bill into law on August 28th, 2007.
Speaking for the animals, I don't give a damn how many times this man had appointments with trollops as long as he continued signing bills in favor of the animals.
I believed this man would have continued evolving for the animals and would have helped to outlaw fur in NY altogether.
At least it is a beginning.
It has to start somewhere.
And thats all I have to say about that!
Peace!
P.S.
This is a 8 page article,
I will find the original tonight.

Granted the homeless situation has only gotten worse with Republicans in office so long, cutting social programs and allowing coporate welfare; there's still something not right with "anyone" wearing fur. Might not it be wiser to suggest these coats be sent to wildlife rehabilitators? By the time baby animals are rescued they had gotten through agonizing fear, terrible lonliness and confusion, and even excruciating pain. They need to not only be kept warm, but also find the feel of fur much like their mothers and are therefore comforted. I believe the animals that suffered such horrendous atrocities at the hand of Mankind would prefer to benefit other animals that are so treated.

Posted by: junemarie | March 18, 2008 01:07 AM

I dont think its cold in Afghanistan and Iraq? well maybe at night...but still its not cold during the day,

Posted by: Gruesome Twosome | March 18, 2008 07:59 AM

junemarie

I totally agree with you; the orphaned baby animals would benefit the most from the skins of tortured animals. Feeling the fur around them would certainly give them a sense of comfort and security as well as familiarity. I do not agree with PETA's campaign to give these furs to the homeless. Fur is cruel irregardless who wears them---wrong message being sent to the public. The HSUS uses the fur donated to them for these purposes---orphaned animal babies in rehabilitation. PETA needs to get with the program; I do not agree with them on yet again another one of their decisions/positions.

Posted by: Ana | March 18, 2008 12:19 PM

Would she allow to make umbrellas out of her kids skin too???? Shame..shame...shame

Posted by: Nora | March 18, 2008 12:42 PM

Genius Idea,
Junemarie.
Are you listening PETA?
You need to listen to june maries idea.
I'ts perfect.
Humans were not born with fur but animals were.
Seems like the sensible and compassionate thing to do.
Humans are able to find shelters, animals are not.
This doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to figure this one out.
Peace!!!!!

Posted by: Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals | March 18, 2008 02:22 PM

Junemarie's idea is indeed wonderful!

I would just add that unfortunately orphaned wildlife are often immunocompromised and sick - the nasty preservatives used in commercial fur coats can be toxic to them and there's no way to make it sterile.

Most rehabbers use heating devices - Upon the advice of a vet I used to work for, I use uncooked rice in a (clean!) sock and microwave it.

It stays warm for 25 minutes, sometimes more, and little mammal orphans absolutely love it and curl up with it. It's also better than warm water bottles because it's dry and will not leak.

Adult mammals who are sick or injured often have a problem with overheating so a warm room is better than fur.

Homeless folks won't become poisoned from fur coats, so it may be better for them.

Posted by: Maya, CVT | March 18, 2008 02:54 PM

Common Sense Steve--I stand by my description. Anyone in this day and age who can wear fur without thinking or caring about the animals who were killed for that coat is a self-centered, selfish bitch. And there just isn't any nice way to say it.

Posted by: Kelley | March 18, 2008 06:30 PM

That fur coat is something. Of course, I hope everyone bitching here doesn't own a house, because, you know, when it was built they had to "develop" the forest land and stuff. That meant knocking over trees and killing / driving animals out of their homes and stuff...so you can come home from work and watch tv in comfort.

Shame on her ,we all should throw RED PAINT on her....

Posted by: O Velez Jr | March 19, 2008 12:50 AM

I was thinking the same as junemarie, but Maya makes a good point about the toxins in the fur coat.

Posted by: lynda downie | March 19, 2008 01:55 AM

Jenn,
Mike Bloomberg's "girlfriend", Diana Taylor, has many fur-coats.

Mike Bloomberg's mother, Charlotte Bloomberg, is 99 years old. We need to fogive her because of her age.

At the same innauguration, Giulliani's wife was wearing a very expensive fur-coat.

Bloomberg's ex-wife, Susan, is a friend of animals. Bloomberg's daughters Emma and Georgina are very pleasant girls. Georgina is an animal lover.

Diana Taylor is a terrible women. She is very unpleasant person. She works behind the scenes intimidating journalists, destroying political foes, blackmailing, intimidating.

Susan Bloomberg could be a great "First Lady."

Posted by: Bruno Masure | March 19, 2008 06:19 AM

Thank you, Lynda - ;) All the more reason to stop making fur coats altogether - fleece, made from recycled bottles, is way better for all!! ;)

I love this campaign - FAR better than throwing stuff at people. This way, the public knows that she couldn't possibly turn down a chance to help the homeless without looking like a selfish jerk.

She will be compelled to say yes, hopefully learning empathy for the tortured, caged mink, rabbits etc in the process.

If not, she will know how bad it looks to say no. PETA was brilliant in coming up with this one.

Posted by: Maya, CVT | March 19, 2008 11:06 AM

And of course, it has now come out that David Patterson has had many affairs behind his wife's back. Now the fur makes sense (not that wearing fur ever really does). I've always been told that behind every fur-wearing woman, is the cheating bastard that gave it to her as a gift!

Posted by: BullyDawg | March 19, 2008 03:32 PM

hey bullydog... just maybe as a modern woman with her own career, she bought the beautiful coat herself with her own freedom of choice... and not having to listen to the blithering idiots on this blog

and if she got to read all the compliments that the petaphiles gave her, she'd proably go out and get another!

Posted by: common sense steve | March 19, 2008 06:50 PM

Thanks, Maya, for sharing your first-hand experience with injured wildlife and making us aware of the dangers to their survival from the toxic preservations in the fur coats.

Posted by: lynda downie | March 20, 2008 01:42 AM

Hi Common Sense Steve!

I have to say, I agree completely with what you said - the words whore, bitch, skank, added to all the titty shots on PETA's website just screams misogony.

Sexism is alive and well in our society.

PETA aside, though, I'm wondering if you really do beleive that just because we have the freedom in America to do something, that makes it okay? I mean, I have the constitutional right to protest the war at a soldier's funeral, but does that make it okay?

Many endangered species are poached for fur, some bred in tiny, rusty cages - the wild animals are malnourished, tortured, suffer for years. It seems really unnecessary to me.

And even if you don't feel too much sympathy for the animals, there are many heroic animal scientists - Jane Goodall, David Attenboro, who do great work.

Some have lost their lives - Diane Fossey was shot in her sleep by poachers, and even a nun in South Africa who was trying to protect wildlife, was stalked and shot to death by poachers. She never hurt a fly.

Speaking as a woman who's in love with Soho in NYC (lol), I can tell you that there are hundreds of beautiful coats that are not made of fur.

I'm sure it's the least we can do for endangered species, the environment, and the memory of that nice nun, to not support the fur trade.

Thank you for listening! ;)

I couldn't help myself.
Judith

Posted by: Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals | March 20, 2008 09:04 PM

dear judith,,, no one wants me here because you get tired of hearing the other side of the story... the majority side based on common sense and facts and not on emotion and propaganda...

and yet, my blogs always seem to illicit comments from most of you so i guess i'm not really talking to myself...

and maya... the fur industry does not use endangered species and peta knows this...

and yes , there are great coats not using fur... they are wool, leather, suede and goosedown... all the other coats are petrolleum based, environment ruining garments...

and yes, i do have sympathy for animals and the fearless people that have fought for them... but peta cannot compare to these repsectable people like diane fossey.. these people did not strip down and look for a ridiculous publicity stunt to make there point... they did not break the law and encourage terrorism and harrassement of fellow human beings...

Posted by: common sense steve | March 21, 2008 06:05 PM

Hi Steve! ;)

So....it turns out you **do** have sympathy for animals! You spoke of Diane Fossey, environmental issues...I'm happy to hear that.

Unfortunately, materials like leather and suede are treated with toxic, non-biodegradeable materials which also ruin the environemnt.

Also factory farms with cattle cause a rise in methane which contributes to global warming, and runoff from farms pollutes our most precious and disappearing resource, water.

I have to admit, I had not heard about the petrolleum. I hope you tell me more about that issue. I assumed the coats I bought were fairly eco friendly. (And I live in New England, so I buy lots of coats!) ;)

I completely agree with you on some of PETA's stunts. However, you might notice that it's what has made them one of the few and only successful animal rights organizations.

It's a shame that the public needs vile and offensive campaigns to keep their short attention spans going.

I'm not saying that I approve of PETA's offensive campaigns (although there have been many perfectly clever and non offensive ones; but they don't get noticed)

We should keep in mind, Steve, that PETA is not run by animals; it's run by people.

As I said before, keeping minks in inhumane conditions and electrocuting them for a fur coat is not a PETA issue; it's an issue of basic compassion.

;) NO offense intended. ;)
