Update: You can read PETA’s letter to the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) about this video here, and if you want to show your support for investigating and punishing those involved, you can do so here.

A lot of people have been writing in and commenting about a shocking video that has recently surfaced which shows a smiling marine throwing a live puppy off a cliff while his friend laughs. Witnessing this kind of sadism under any circumstances is incredibly disturbing, but there’s something particularly horrifying about seeing it perpetrated by members of the military, and our caseworkers are currently analyzing the video footage to determine its legitimacy, as well as pushing military authorities to follow through on their own thorough investigation of this reprehensible act.

From what I understand, the culprit is believed to be based in Hawaii, and we intend to ensure that he—and anyone else involved in this atrocity—is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if this video is determined to be authentic. I’ll keep you posted.

What is the "full extent of the law"??

My vote is for biblical justice, "an eye for an eye"!

This is a disgusting display of what our tax dollars pay for. Someone should throw him off a cliff and see if he likes it. I mean, just look at that puppys tail, so scared, so helpless. I hope this serviceman and all those involved get what they deserve!

Posted by: mishmosh08 | March 5, 2008 11:20 AM

I saw this yesterday on the morning news, they didn't actually show the puppy get thrown but said what happened. This is outrageous and disgusting,I cannot believe this marine would do that but he did and I hope he and all involved get prosecuted. I don't care if they are protecting our country they are disgusting individuals.

Posted by: Pam | March 5, 2008 11:22 AM

Wow-What would posses someone to do something so cruel and mindless.
I also can't believe an idiot scumbag like this would put his unit/fellow soldiers in such a bad light.
People this stupid deserve to have there lives disrupted/ruined for such cruelty. This guy should not be a poster child for Marines but for morons.
Wow?????

Wake up, America!

This is what your "brave heros" do for entertainment, since Iraqi women won't consent to have sex with them. What did you expect would happen?

Ironically enough, when 2 dogs happen to be rescued by the military, the US mainstream media makes a whole big fuss over it, honoring the "heroes".

But they're always careful on omitting the overwhelming cruelty perpetrated every day over in Iraq.

Posted by: Yann Bernard | March 5, 2008 11:29 AM

The American military is letting psychotic trash like this soldier make fools of all American soldiers, all Americans.

When are there going to be clear rules regarding treatment of animals for soldiers in military, and punishments?

Not to mention, the soldiers that did this are psychotic and dangerous. They need to be removed from society.

What is next? Someone's child?

This is how killers like Jeffrey Dahmer got started.

Posted by: kelly | March 5, 2008 11:35 AM

WTF!!! I can't believe this!! Sons of ******* need to be thrown out of the military!! And we're suppose to trust them! How can we and the people of Iraq put our faith in these people when they can to do this to an innocent, living, breathing animal!? They already have to fight their own survival in this hell hole! "HELL HOLE" for all animals! KICK THEM OUT!!

Posted by: Carla | March 5, 2008 11:46 AM

I am so upset by this video. The poor puppy. I can't stop thinking about it- it makes me so angry and sad! I can't believe a healthy sane human being could actually do something like this. I hope this man is punished for what he has done. Once I saw this video I came to this site to make sure that something is done. He can not go unpunished for his horrible actions. Please keep us posted.

I don't know if this is a authentic video, that dog wasent moving or anything so he looked like he was already dead from the heat or something ?

and i played the dog barking loud and my dog didnt move, and usually he does ? so im guessing they just edited in sounds and through a dead dog ? at least i hope it died of natural causes ? :[

Posted by: matt ligotti | March 5, 2008 12:09 PM

It's not the only video of its kind on YouTube. Just do a search and you will see military tauting crippled dogs, blowing dogs and cats up and worse all for a "good laugh". It's disgusting, but if the person in this case gets made an example of, then I think they all should as well.

Posted by: T | March 5, 2008 12:21 PM

What a pair of heartless assholes. Throw them off a cliff and THEN let them see how 'funny' it is. I hope not only this scumbag and his pal get thrown out from the army, but they get thrown into jail.
Poor little puppy.

Please understand that my views are mine alone, and my statements do not represent the United States Navy or military as a whole. That being said, I cannot describe the level of physical anger I felt when I heard about this. This is a grevious and wretched atrocity, and is reprehensible to say the least. I have been in the military for ten years and have had a dog or dogs the entire time as well as growing up. I ask you to please not judge us all by this one heinous act allegedly committed by this individual. I can feel myself welling up with anger even as I write this. My wife and I don't have children, so our dogs (Yellow Lab-Samson and Beagle-Zoe) are "the kids". I also ask you to remember the family of a Marine killed in action who fought to get his military working dog home to be adopted by their family. Please remember the heartbreak felt by our servicemen and women, who work with these wonderful dogs, when something happens to the animal. Please remember the stray animals taken in and adopted by our servicemen while in theater. The animal often become the unit's mascot. They protect and care for the animal not entirely unlike they protect us in the line of duty. This atrocity is not representative of anything the military stands for. If if turns out to be legitimate, this person will be dealt with appropriately. What is "appropriate" punishment is not mine to judge. Suggestion and specualtion of punishment is expected. But again, I ask you please don't judge us all by this one horrific incident.

Posted by: LT Jeremy Weikel | March 5, 2008 12:26 PM

A lot of people are saying the video was fake. I'm not sure, but this one isn't fake and it's nearly as cruel. That puppy is all alone and obviously lost (may even be hurt?) and they're laughing in his face and taunting him instead of trying to help the little guy. So sad :(

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-677125898199304501&q=puppy+iraq+video&total=204&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1

And recall that one a while back of the soldiers who shot at that one dog and laughed while it tried to hop away from them on three legs???

Posted by: Tricia | March 5, 2008 12:34 PM

I heard that the dog was already dead.
But that still doesn't change the fact that this is totally sadistic.
I can't watch the vid because I know I will be disturbed.
But did you know that US military training included parts about desentization to killing? There is an interview I read about a guy training in the miliary who was given a rabbit and told to beat it to death. This way, real killing will be easier for them.
so as fucking sick as it was to tape this and circulate it... it's also hard to be surprised

Posted by: Carla | March 5, 2008 12:55 PM

People, if this is an authentic video, then yes, I think he should be punished. But let hold back on passing judgement so soon.
I think these Marines deserve the benfit of the doubt. Remember what we stand for, Inocent until proven guilty!

Posted by: Kurt K | March 5, 2008 12:59 PM

It is my sincere hope that PETA as well as other like-minded organizations do not let this story fade or, accept a banal explanation/apology for this soldier's actions.

As a member of a family of five Marines, I know all too well the military's ability to sweep things under the carpet when the information can sully its rank and file.

The pressure for the Marine Corps to discipline this man and bring him to TRIAL for his actions, in addition to stripping him of his rank, should not ebb in the slightest until justice is done!

Posted by: Aria | March 5, 2008 01:03 PM

I agree that this particular individual should be punished for this horrific act (if it's legitimate), but you can't make assumptions that all persons serving our military are of the same domineer. A lot of our serviceman are "brave soldiers". Keep in mind that our government will let just about anyone enlist. Please don't create a stereotype of our enlisted soldiers based on the act of one bad apple!

Posted by: Lori | March 5, 2008 01:09 PM

Please do something about this. This is horrifying!! It is frightening to think that these people will be allowed back into society after their tour. What will they do then? Has the cameraman been identified? He is just as to blame!!! Disgusting.

Posted by: Can't Shake This Image | March 5, 2008 01:10 PM

This is the most disturbing thing I have ever seen! I am outraged with those two soldiers and am appalled by their actions. I personally like the idea of throwing them over a cliff and seeing how well it works out for them. One word for those two heartless boys: Karma

Posted by: Tanya | March 5, 2008 01:14 PM

This is shocking, here in Ireland we have being rallying supporters across the country and around Europe to make sure these monsters are caught and apprehended!

Shame on those involved!

Posted by: John Carmody | March 5, 2008 01:15 PM

It is a very good thing that PETA is following through on this. That beautiful little animal must not be forgotten.

I wish that people would remember this puppy, and the dairy cows in Chino, and Michael Vick, and all of the horrible things that people do to animals. Surely these things are more important than the latest drinking party in Hollywood.

Posted by: Paul Wilson | March 5, 2008 01:38 PM

Another two-legged beast who should be shot at the stake!

Posted by: Old Spiderwoman | March 5, 2008 01:43 PM

I really hope to God that the video was fake. I was completely horrified to see that video and cannot stop thinking about it. If it turns out to be genuine I hope that those marines are captured and beaten within an inch of their worthless lives.

Posted by: Eric | March 5, 2008 01:57 PM

I think what is more disturbing is that some of you are willing to take the life of another human. Yes, what they did was cruel and definitely disgusting. Those men are paid for by the American taxpayer. But wanting to kill another human over it, now thats just as bad.

Posted by: Anne Nonymous | March 5, 2008 02:03 PM

This is beyond anything comprehensible. How could anyone gain pleasure out of such a horrific act? I'd like to think that this sick marine will get his (one way or another) karma is a b**ch my friend! Rest assured, that you'll get yours.

Posted by: Sonia Alvarez | March 5, 2008 02:04 PM

This is sickening. I hope they catch these terrible men and bring them to justice. YES, PETA, we're with you - - go after em!

Posted by: Mary | March 5, 2008 02:07 PM

These people(and I use the term loosely)are sickening. They are made to be killers so they behave accordingly. I expect that we will here well rehearsed little quips from the government letting us know that this matter is not being taken lightly. My compassion does not go out to "these brave soldiers" and their families. I firmly believe that a gateway into compassionate and sustainable living on a global level begins with how we treat all living beings. Why should the military jeopardize its investment with punishing soldiers that have been trained to systematically make all beings in its path submit to them? This I suspect will be swept under the rug as per the norm with our government

Lt. Weikel, thank you for your sentiments. As downright inane and insane as I think war (esp. this war) is, I also find myself incensed by the way so many of our military men and women are consistently screwed over, not only by our government, but by their own colleagues who perpetuate senseless atrocities like this.

But as the other Lt. to comment here said, it IS hard to be surprised. When you train human beings to kill on command, in defiance of their own consciences, you not only rob them of free will, you rob them of their humanity.

What we lose to war and violence is so much more valuable than anything we could ever (misguidedly) hope to gain.

I haven't been able to watch this video, but hearing about it has left a sick feeling in my stomach for the last few days. It's just so, so sad! It's just unbelievable that humans are capable of such monsterouus acts. That poor little puppy was probably happy that he was getting a little attention right before they murdered him. The stories of animal abuse by our military are absolutely sickening, and I hope that the mainstream media coverage from this video will at least raise public awareness and push to give these monsters and others like him on the youtube videos the punishment they deserve.

I just want to say that this puppy throwing video was the most disgusting, derranged video I have every seen. I immerdiately started crying and feel horrible that animals are being treated like this. What infuriated me even more was the fact that this was done by US soldiers. SO this is what our tax dollars are paying for???? What kind of aa person could do this? I say the same should go for all people involved. These "soldiers", if we can even call them that, need to be charges and prosecuted to the fulliest. They should not be serving our country but serving time in jail. I couldn't get the horrible image out of my mind. Please PETA, find these people and ensure justice for these animals is served!!!

This senseless act of violence towards innocent animals is an atrocity! The individuals involved must take responsibility for their sick, cowardly lives and face an equally merciless punishment.

Posted by: christian | March 5, 2008 03:02 PM

Posted by: Enlightened | March 5, 2008 03:07 PM

Well this is so sad. I hope we get to the bottome of this and, yes, if true then those responsible should be punished. But let's not be so simplistic to say these military men are any different to those among us in general. There are good and bad, virtuous and cruel in all walks of life. My nephew is in the military, served in Iraq and is as kind a person - to human and animals - as you will find. But he is also for justice.

Posted by: Nick Pokoluk | March 5, 2008 03:12 PM

If this is real, we need to prosecute all those monsters involved. I just cannot believe people can do such evil things!

Posted by: kinlaso | March 5, 2008 03:15 PM

Except for the dog itself, it doesn't matter whether it was dead or alive when thrown (I hope it had died). What matters is why we have sadists who think such a video is funny in the military.

Posted by: Trudy Kuehner | March 5, 2008 03:32 PM

I am not for killing any animal and this is obviously cruel. But do you know that in Iraq dogs are not domesticated, not given vacinations and often carry diseases that are close in DNA to the plague. Think about that before you judge any marine for his actions against dogs in Iraq.

Posted by: ???? | March 5, 2008 03:34 PM

OUTRAGE. That is the sum of it.
No wonder the world hates Americans as a majority. For a lot of the world community comes into immersive contact with us and our culture through our military or movies. A sad day indeed for our collective moral.
Poor little soul.

Posted by: Dante | March 5, 2008 03:35 PM

Thank you PETA for pushing the military to investigate and placing your own caseworkers on the job. I have written to several other animal cruelty organizations to get involved too. Please write to them, it might help with the more people we have involved.

This is so shameful and horrifying.

Posted by: Jennifer Hunter | March 5, 2008 04:48 PM

I'll bet this isn't the first animal he's killed. This is the act of a snivelling, sub-human coward.

I imagine the only reason this loser joined the army was for the sheer enjoyment of killing. The army should not tolerate this kind of sick behaviour.

The world knows most Americans have huge hearts and are equally horrified by this man's cruelty.

Hopefully, this sick individual will be dealt with as he should be.

Posted by: Ellen | March 5, 2008 04:49 PM

I have many family members in the military, and until the day I die I will always support them, but this is un-called for. This can only be described as horrible, sad, painful, disgusting, pathetic. I am ashamed to call him a U.S. Soldier, he isn't a man, he isn't a person, he is a cancer in our society. I agree that an eye for an eye and that "man" should be punished.

Posted by: Jennifer Henderson | March 5, 2008 04:58 PM

Posted by: Matthew | March 5, 2008 05:21 PM

I just saw the video where the lance corporal, based with a unit in the Hawaiian islands, hurls with all his might a puppy over a cliff-and into rough terrain.

Please forward this also to the marines.....

After watching this video, I am sick and think I will loose my lunch. Are those two men marines? Disgusting! Deplorable! Such a lack of compassion! Sick, sick, sick! They are laughing-do they think killing a puppy in this manner is fun? What will they then do in the heat of the battle-slaughter women, children, and old people-then laugh. To think that they are allowed to carry and shoot weapons! They do not deserve to represent this country and should be thrown into prison. I don't want these two men to defend me or fight for our country. I hope they punish them to the full extent of the law. I cannot stop shaking, thinking that people like this represent us to the WORLD! No wonder we, in the U.S., are HATED! We have garbage like these men showing the world what we are like! Totally, totally unacceptable!

Posted by: EvaEldred | March 5, 2008 05:25 PM

I truly hope that this video was "staged" (although, that wouldn't make the act any less horrific in my mind!) A few points: First, the dog doesn't move at any point during the video (already dead? a stuffed animal?) Second, there is a moment when the dog goes off camera (as the soldier is taking aim to toss)... one can only hope that if this were a real dog in the beginning, they replaced him/her with something fake while off camera to be thrown. Of course, these are just my hopes that this really didn't happen. Regardless, they need to pay!

Posted by: Jim | March 5, 2008 05:26 PM

I do not expect much from MCB hawaii. i live on this base and at this time they are making another salor get rid of his dog because a marine who lives in the same housing unit who partys every night, outside. disrupting the neighborhood and harras the Salors family and their dog by throwing cigarett but at the animal. The base has gone after the family with the dog not the Marine who breaks all their rules. This is because the marine paries with the people in security and they inform them on who ever complains about any problems. now they have gone after this salors pet. which they must now get rid of.

PETA, thank you for bringing this to our attention and please, let us know what we can do to make sure these men get charges against them, anything we can do to make them pay for the innocent life they took and how many others they MAY have and just didnt film. My tax dollars pay this man's salary. I want justice. As a USA citizen, I demand justice and accountability from the Marines.

Posted by: Lis | March 5, 2008 05:43 PM

What a poor excuse for a human being. It's really disturbing that he is a man with the job of protecting this country. It is well documented that people that intentionally hurt and kill animals will do the same to innocent humans. I saw this-cried and hugged my dog today.

Posted by: Leslie | March 5, 2008 05:58 PM

I also heard that CNN's lawyer, Nancy Grace, is suppose to investigate this tonight on her show. Her show Mountain Standard Time is 6pm. Maybe we can learn something more from this from her.

Posted by: Cindy S. | March 5, 2008 05:58 PM

This video real or unreal is still unsightly and disturbing. This video has play on people emotions causing outrage. After the investigation of the authenticity of this video, I strongly hope that it is a fake video. If it is a real video, these soldiers need to be held responsible and be punished. Also, the involved soldiers need to be evaluated for mental illness, since that is how anti-social behavior begins. This is a sad moment for our military.

Posted by: Jamie Russell | March 5, 2008 06:07 PM

Can't get over this story! It's been on my mind all night and day. It's so sick that people who are fighting for our country feeling the way that they feel about fellow troops being killed and injured would do something like that to a little puppy! If this story is true they should do to them what they did to the puppy. I'm so glad that PETA is on this story! Give them hell!!!!

I dare anyone involved in that bs to meet me in the octagon. I am a broken down 46 year old animal lover and will gladly put my foot in his a$$. I dare PETA to post this. Personally, any asshole that has to hurt a helpless animal who cannot obviously fight for himself is a coward,in the true sense of the word. Not only do I think they should be kicked off the cliff themselves which unfortunately isn't going to happen unless I was over there, they better get their asses kicked out of the military and thrown in jail. This is not how a human acts, especially a marine, who as a group I have the most respect for. This is how terrorists behave and I hope they go to hell and suffer forever.

Posted by: Suzi | March 5, 2008 08:40 PM

I know that I keep reading if this puppy was dead or alive. Not that it matters because the act is horrible either way, but the puppy looks alive. If it were dead, I don't think that its tail would be tucked in so much. Also, why would the one guy be all smiles at the beginning of the video, saying "oh look at the puppy" if it were dead? I hope these people get what is coming to them. Jail time should definitely be in their future. I am ashamed to call these people Americans and soldiers. They are heinous individuals.

Posted by: Stephanie | March 5, 2008 08:48 PM

Unfortunately, I think "fullest extent of the law" where animals are concerned is a slap on the wrist at best.

If it's even prosecuted.

And I think since this is military, they would be the ones prosecuting?

Well, there goes that one.

There are women in the armed forces who are raped by fellow soldiers and the military tries to cover that up.

What do you think they are going to do about an animal?

And even if the video is fake, and they showed a live puppy, then replaced it with a stuffed puppy to look like they were throwing the live puppy...don't you think these soldiers need some kind of psychiatric counseling?

Posted by: Tamara | March 5, 2008 08:50 PM

This video is absolutely disgusting. I hope this "hero" gets thrown off a cliff. This is a horrible thing to be even posted on-line, because of all the dumbasses that watched it. There are children that are going to think it's "cool" to torture animals. They look up to this "heros" and want to be like them. This man and his friends need to be brought to justice with either jail time or torture. The fact that we have people with this mentality serving our country makes me wonder. Just disgusting. It makes me sick.

Posted by: Jasmine | March 5, 2008 08:52 PM

JUSTICE. WE WANT JUSTICE. I can't eat, I feel outraged and terribly saddened. They have to make an example of this attention seeking psychopath and THROW THE BOOK AT HIM to deter other sick and deranged men like him from thinking of doing the same. The word coward is not even close. I hope this poor little soul is avenged and I hope this man is killed in his sleep. His spineless friend too. JUSTICE!

Posted by: mike meneley | March 5, 2008 09:03 PM

I am in full support of ethical treatment of animals however, this video looks fake. I will be interested in seeing the outcome of this. I have a feeling these guys were messing around, though in a horrible manner. Notice theres a moment between seeing a real puppy and the toss where you do not see the puppy?

Posted by: Kat | March 5, 2008 09:05 PM

How about those two military fall off the cliff? That's the most cold-hearted thing i've ever seen.

Posted by: Adriana Santivanez | March 5, 2008 09:09 PM

I have always been proud to call myself an American and to support our troops in any way possible. When I heard this story, my heart sank; I couldn't believe that people I thought represented me would do something like this. Regardless of what these people claim to represent, they do NOT represent me and I hope they someday feel the same pain they caused that living being.

Posted by: Krichelle | March 5, 2008 09:10 PM

First off,why would you even think of holding a puppy like that?
2nd,only somebody that ignorant would even think about throwing this inocent puppy over a cliff
3rd,his dumba** friend didnt even do anything to stop him in the first place from throwing the puppy over the effing cliff and all he could say was "thats mean?"
i bet you anything if those demented motherfu**ers got thrown over the cliff they would actually have somebody to help them instead, a puppy being thrown over he/she has no help what-so ever but to be lughed at and forgotten by these people just like the others out thier suffering from stupid pricks like these guys
i hope these fools get what they diserve cause its people like this who dont diserve to even be living right now and thats the truth, what is seriously wrong with this world?

Posted by: lizzie | March 5, 2008 09:12 PM

I can't watch this video, just the thought of it is too disturbing, but it did remind me of what I was told by both my brother and father who have both served in iraq and that the dogs are like rats over there, no ABC's but they said that they threw rocks at the dogs, shot at them (possibly did shoot them) and generally harased them but also said that the Iraqis would strap bombs on poor dogs and send them over military lines. Either way its still disgusting and apalling. How are you suppose to Support our Troops when they are doing stuff like this?

Posted by: Colleen | March 5, 2008 09:34 PM

I could not believe what I saw. I am still in shock and at a loss for words. I pray that poor puppy is okay. That man needs some serios counceling or a combat boot up his a**.

"But do you know that in Iraq dogs are not domesticated, not given vacinations and often carry diseases that are close in DNA to the plague"

How very frigging interesting. I've seen this EXACT COMMENT come right from AKC BREEDERS dredging up Lies to use against a soldier who rescued a dog.

And how do you explain, Ms AKC Breeder, you and your USA puppy mill friends that DON'T INNOCULATE, CAGE DOGS their lives that are completely undomesticated, and sell diseased dogs to the public that spread illness.

These dogs in Iraq are often abandoned pets, you deceitful AKC breeder.

The AKC needs to be fumigated.

According to them, any dog that isn't a badly bred purebred should get killed.

Saw in an abc news article by Emily Freedman that David Spiegel, professor and associate chairman of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine, is MAKING EXCUSES for this soldier by claiming that he was "stressed" and that is a normal reaction for what he did.

Stanford University should be ashamed for having a guy like this on their staff.

How can there be any hope for the mentally ill if so-called psychiatric experts are this deranged!

My heart broke and my blood boiled all at the same time as I watched the deranged Marine smile and laugh as he threw the beautiful black & white puppy as hard as he could over a cliff as if the poor little pup were a baseball, all the while the puppy was crying in panic the whole distance until he hit the ground. I am so angry! And I don't buy this junk about the reason being because the idiot has issues from being in a terrible war. If he has mental issues that would cause him to commit such a heinous act then he has no business carrying a weapon or defending our Country! He should be very glad that I am not the person that will determine his fate for his heartless demonic actions. I've always heard that serial killers start out abusing & torturing animals, makes you wonder what else this heartless idiot is capable of, doesn't it?

Posted by: Phyllis B. Powers | March 6, 2008 02:26 AM

I really want to know the names of these "heros" in Hawaii , of all places, who think it is ok to treat a puppy in such a horrible way !!! I also believe in an eye 4 an eye & also offer my services to do the tossing ! These Pussheads need a very special lesson in being Human. I thought the Marines were the elite in the armed forces. HA ! This is the Shit in my opinion. I will be watching just what action the military & the rest of the country has to say & just what punishment WILL be dished out to these ASSHOLES. ! Maybe asshole Vick needs a roommate !! Somewhere by a cliff ! I dought if these assholes ever saw battle, they would shit !

Posted by: Alan Serlin | March 6, 2008 02:46 AM

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO THE MARINES, ARMY, ETC. AND ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THE COMMENTS ON THIS WEBSITE!!

I am so disgusting and saddened by what I saw. This is totally not appropriate behavior from the US Military! It really makes me sick to my stomach to know that there are people out there that do these kind of things to animals, and especially from our military!! Men and women we are suppose to trust and think they are fighting for our freedom! Instead they are killing innocent animals instead of fighting the war of terror. WTF is that about, huh?? I hope to all the 'so called' soldiers out there that you are proud of yourselves! I am sure your families and loved ones feel the same way! I hope you get what comes to you one way or the other. Karma will get to you eventually! After seeing that disturbing video, I DO NOT support you anymore. If that is what my tax dollars are paying for, forget it! Do something RIGHT for this country. Instead of killing innocent animals, help them instead why dont you?! It really disgusts me what you are doing out there. If you are that sick of a person you SHOULD NOT be in the military, or be alive at all. I hope you are punished and kicked out of the military ASAP! Maybe someone should grab you by the neck and throw you off a cliff, how would you like that? You are very heartless people.

Posted by: Teresa B. | March 6, 2008 04:12 AM

Throw the Marines off a cliff huh? That's pretty stupid. Maybe you might simply feel sorry for them and look to have them put in a hospital since they are obviously insane if this video is real. lots of closed minded people here wanting to stereotype the entire military as well. Somebody said something about military training desensetizing troops to killing. Gee, ya think genius? I mean hey it's only a major part of their job. Anyways seriously if these guys are that bent then thy need to be in a psych ward not jail. Think about why they might be nutty. I'm sure you can figure it.

Posted by: amanda | March 6, 2008 08:53 AM

Dear Lt. Weikel:
Thank you for your heartfelt post above. Most military people would agree with you, I'm sure. So many of the people fighting this stupid war in Iraq are 19 and 20 years old and I think the above video demonstrates with sickening accuracy what you do to the soul of a person when you train him or her to kill others and then plop that person down in an area where, all around as far as you can see, there's fighting and bloodshed and violence. This isn't to excuse this absolutely horrible action, but when people of an age to just barely vote are carrying rifles and killing other people, these are the kinds of insensitivity and blunted humanity that can result. I am just grateful that most of the people in the military are like Lt. Weikel! This video is right up there with the segment in "Earthlings" where the garbage collecter picks up an old, tired stray dog and just dumps him into the garbage truck - alive - and you watch his head disappear as the trash masher moves forward. The inhumanity of human beings can be staggering and devastating.

Posted by: Susannah S | March 6, 2008 10:03 AM

if this is true, the marine should be strung up

Posted by: Barbara Hall | March 6, 2008 10:26 AM

To all of you who are saying these Marines need to be "blown up", or "killed" by IEDs, need help just as well. If this turns out to be a real video, then I think they should be punished.
But, how dare you people judge the USMC and the rest of the military over this one incident? These men and women have sacrificed more for this country than you people have ever began too. They walk through hell everyday for you and me and you are ready to spit on them after this!
Judge the man who did it, not the Marines. The Mairnes are the finest, most professional fighting force in the world. They have earned everybodys' respect thousands times over.
Furthermore, how dare you accuses these men of rape and murder in Iraq. Of course bad shit happens in war, it brings out the worst in all that go through it. However, it also brings out the best in human nature. Bravery and sacrifice happen day in and day out in a war zone, but we never hear reports about those kind of things!
Again, I am not defending the Marine who did this. If this is true he will be dealt with.
But I am defending the military as a whole. The US military takes more precautions than any other military in history to reduce colatoral damage to cilvilians. You may argue that many people have been killed in Iraq, but you must understand the majority of these deaths are caused by the enemy, not our forces.
The Marines will always lay their lives on the line for us civilians. With the Marines you will find no better friend for us, but no worse an enemy for those against the US!
Think about that before you before you move to judge the Marines!

Posted by: Kurt K | March 6, 2008 10:36 AM

Whether or not the puppy was "real", dead, or alive, is almost irrelevant. If this was a real, live puppy, then these people are psychopathic. If this was a puppy that was already found dead, and they did it as a "prank", then they are still despicable people for finding such a prank to be so amusing.

Not all Americans and/or military personnel are like that - let's focus on the individuals who committed this vicious act or horrible prank.

No matter what, though, these so-called men should be discharged from the military immediately. They absolutely cannot be trusted to perform their duties in a respectful, ethical manner.

Posted by: Michele | March 6, 2008 11:02 AM

Go to YOU-TUBE and type in "Marine throwing puppy off cliff", then you can find where the idiot puppy killer makes a statement. He says that "it was just a stray" and that he did the animal a favor. He also says that he just wants this whole thing to be over with, I bet he does! This is long from being over and I just want to also tell everyone to look up a vidio on You Tube called "the puppy is real". I almost threw up---this shows more dogs being killed by USA Military over in Iraq, but that's not all, it shows them abusing the Iraq children. My Lord, they are killing innocent animals and abusing children! What kind of men do they let in the Military? Something has to be done about the actions of these heartless, deranged soldiers! I am going to write to any and all Government/Military Officials about this and I hope you will do the same.

Its been 3 years in the core and I love our nicknames are the "Devil Dogs" we work real close with animals and such out in the feild if only you "People" could see what its like out here you would change your thoughts on this war. Ive lost two friends...you dont know what its like to see your friend get shot in the head next to you......we will see this soilder get busted but that dosent mean you give a bad name tot he res of us!

Posted by: Jessica | March 6, 2008 11:28 AM

This is outrageous and unacceptable behavior whether this a soldier, or not. The U.S. military has been brainwashed into believing that they can do whatever they want in Iraq, regardless of consequences, and get the misinformed parade welcome home when they return from "defending our country". Absolutely shameful when we believe that killing, human or animal, is deserving of a parade or any other glorified welcome home.

Posted by: Michael Essi | March 6, 2008 11:56 AM

Words cannot express the feelings I felt when I viewed the video, I am not shocked but very saddened that someone would do something like that. Will true justice be served, of course not. I could go on about what I feel should be done and how screwed up this discusting act was but I wont. My feelings are that unless we start uniting and fighting the animal cruelty battle then these horrific events will continue. And to his family if you are down playing what your son has done then you truly need a wake up - some one who can so easily disregard an innocent creatures life then how will they regard a human life? -Judith

Posted by: JUDITH | March 6, 2008 11:59 AM

This is not the first video of animal cruelty from Iraq, but there are also good soldiers that care for animals. As for the evil ones, maybe they should be taken back to that spot, shown their video, executed there, and their bodies left there to rot.

But what always gets me is there are millions of people outraged over this video and it is on the news BUT WHAT ABOUT PUPPIES IN VIVISECTION and all the other horrible tortures done to animals? What is so insane about people and the news people that they can get so outraged over this video and the Vick case but care nothing at all for all the other cruelties and outright tortures that are tremedously worse. I'd rather be thrown of a cliff any day than be vivisected or boiled alive or skinned alive. And what of all the puppies in has chambers here in the U.S. Be consistent. If the other tortures don't mean anything to the media and people of this nation, then this video from Iraq should not matter either, and if it does, then the news and society should be challenged that why do they not care about the vivisection puppies and other torture victims?

Posted by: stoptorture | March 6, 2008 12:16 PM

I could not believe it when i saw this today! I cannot even find the polite words to use to express my emotions. I do not give a damn if your in the military fighting Irak, honestly your actions just proove to the Iraks who the real animals are! Killing a innocent little dog to satisfy your ego and rage to simply...KILL. You should be convicted of a hate crime and premeditated murder, because that is what you have done. What's next? A CHILD?! Let me tell you, if you were my BF i would run fast in the opposite direction and never look back. If you are convicted of a crime, and i pray to god you do, i hope they also put a restraining order against you , staying 250 feet away from animals of all kinds and children, because im my eyes, you are just like a pedophile, you pray on smaller ones who cannot defend themselves. You are a cruel cruel soul and NO EXCUSES can undo what you have done. And the ARMY defending themselfs by responding: Saying that it seems unrealistic? PLEASE, come on, if you where grabbed and thrown off a cliff wouldn't you scream?? And why would it be untrue? Is it funny to pretend to be cruel and kill a puppy? Seems to me when the soldiers are got to Irak the streets in the US must be more safe, a few killers less.

Posted by: Ginette Paquette | March 6, 2008 12:28 PM

How horrible!!!

Posted by: Jaclyn | March 6, 2008 12:32 PM

What this guy is doing is cruel on many levels and no animal should have to go through that and im sure that if it was a person he wouldn't be throwing them off a cliff for the reason he would be charged for murder and what is the diffrence if he does it to a dog. a dog is still living and breathing animal and it has feelings and feels pain just like a human.

Posted by: stephanie | March 6, 2008 12:37 PM

JTP,

The military has nobody on hand that can weed out these psychos and send them home?

Look what happened at My Lai. One would hope the military would have learned from that debacle and monitored the state of mind of their personnel much more closely.

Posted by: Mike Quinoa | March 6, 2008 12:52 PM

"Rage", if you actually read the comments (including Deborah's), I think you'd see that this act has been universally condemned by the posters here. Nobody is excusing it... they're just pointing out how a culture of violence leads to something like this.

And on a side note, if you think that all (or even most) Americans agree with what's going on in Iraq, you obviously haven't seen Bush's dismal and declining approval ratings over the last 4 or 5 years.

Posted by: Nancy | March 6, 2008 01:22 PM

It's only right and natural for our blood to boil when confronted with an such a heinous act. But the violence has to stop somewhere.

If we have any hope of convincing the world to end the abuse, exploitation and murder of animals, we can't be so hypocritical as to call for the torture and death of human animals, no matter how monstrous they may be.

"An eye for an eye, and soon the whole world is blind." - Mahatma Gandhi

Posted by: Nancy | March 6, 2008 03:56 PM

The military needs to have rules about treatment of animals by soldiers.

For pete's sake, the military has rules about everything else!

But rules about treatment of animals. None.

There need to be guidelines and punishment for breaking them.

The military needs to send out a strong word to their soldiers that intentional animal abuse is not acceptable and not a part of military life. That it makes honorable soldiers and Americans look bad.

And that it is just plain wrong.

Come on, military leaders! Show some balls here!

I agree. What happens in vivisection labs is morally reprehensible and certainly extreme cruelty and pain for the miserable creatures subjected to all kinds of barbaric violence all on the whim of sadists. This is not science, this is barbaric violence and cruelty relegated against helpless animals. Wasted innocent lives and tax monies.

Posted by: Ana | March 6, 2008 05:13 PM

One thing I would have liked to have seen stressed in the letter to the commanding officer, is the human element... if these Marines can't take the life of a dog seriously, how can they be expected to protect and take seriously the lives of humans? I don't want to see this played-down because it was with a dog and not a human. Just the thought of doing something so careless like that says a lot about the mindset of those Marines. The Marine Corps brass should be very concerned.

Posted by: Steve | March 6, 2008 05:33 PM

The people responsibly for this are saying the dog was already dead so that they do not get punished. The puppy's legs would not be drawn up to his stomach if it were dead. It would be limp. I hope these assholes pay for what they did. This is disgusting and disrespectful. People are so hard on groups that are anti-animal cruelty, saying oh, it's just an animal... However, its about picking on the vulnerable. If someone is willing to throw an innocent, non-threatening puppy off a cliff, for god sakes, ...what will he do next?.. throw a child off a cliff?

That's so sad what happened to that poor puppy but not all marines are like that. I just got done reading a book about a puppy that a soldier and his unit rescued from a house that they raided in Iraq. They socialized the puppy and they later brought him back to the US.
But to the idiot that threw that poor, innocent animal that happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time-
F*** YOU! THAT IS NASTY!!! WHAT DID THAT POOR INNOCENT PUPPY EVER DO TO YOU?
how would you like it if somebody threw you off a cliff? think about that the next time you're thinking about doing something that mean. I WILL be sure to tell everyone that I know what happened that horrible day to the puppy!

Who has seen this golfer hit this Hawk while filming his "How to Golf" video. There bringing him up on charges as we speak. He missed the hawk a few times, then told the camera man, that he will get 'em this time. Now that hurts. That hurts....I thought the puppy was bad, but man....Go see it on foxnews.com...

I do not blame all Marines for the actions of those involved in this deplorable act. I don't think anyone does. This was one or two two marines who conducted an unforgivable act of evil. An act that the US Marine calls shocking and deplorable. Lets not blame the Marine Corp. Let's hold these individual(s) accountable. We need to throw the book at these guys. A discharge is way, way too little for the evil and cruelty displayed. Anyone who thinks this is a fake needs to listen to the tape. The poor little puppy was clearly alive as the terror he experienced in his last seconds of life were recorded.

I have not reviewed the video, and I do not intend to because I might just revise my respect for our armed forces. I can understand 1 (maybe)senseless idiot, but for the others involved I hope you feel proud of yourselves for letting this sociopath execute this defenseless animal and that for most sociopaths it only escalates from animals to humans.

Posted by: Rob | March 6, 2008 09:53 PM

I don't mean to pass judgement, but I am only speaking for those two men in the video, not the whole military. I just think its sick and twisted. Even if the video is legitimate, it still shows him THROWING the dog.

Posted by: Mike | March 6, 2008 10:28 PM

THIS IS CRUELTY TO ANIMAL!!!...

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF WE THREW YOU OFF THE FREAKIN CIFF!!...HUH!...
...I RESPECT THA YUR A SOLDIER AND ALL BUT THATS JUS PLAIN OUT WRONG!!!

Posted by: DONT WORRY BOUT IT | March 6, 2008 10:46 PM

COWARDS! If these stupid guys think that Iraq is Hell, then they're exactly where they should be!!! These monsters are dishonouring Men Kind and the REAL soldiers uniform.

Also here in Brazil, we'll be praying for them to have a very slow and painful death!!!

Now we ask: what's going to happen to them? Nothing?! Is there any Governmental or Military department to whom we can ask for Justice?

Posted by: Alessandra Marin | March 6, 2008 10:59 PM

I think the video is horrifying and I believe this soldier should be held accountable accordingly and discharged from the military. But I found the level of violent language and thinking disturbing on a site such as PETA's, where I would expect people to take a more reasoned and compassionate view towards the entire situation. What this man did was undoubtedly wrong, but if you can imagine the level of stress these young men are under in Iraq, the kinds of horrors and fear they have to face every day, it is no wonder some of them break under the strain, or commit inhumane acts because they have been trained to kill other people without having any empathy towards them. Compassionate living and values means not simply "reacting" to things, especially not meeting violence with violence. I am ashamed that many of the posters may be PETA members and yet clearly have not absorbed the real message of PETA, that of caring and compassion towards ALL living beings, and the importance of trying to understand and address the root causes of why people resort to violence.

I would like to see how proud the parents are now after seeing this video! I can not believe we have people like this representing our country. No matter what, if the puppy was already dead there is no excuse for this heinus act. I am so glad to see where our tax dollars are going. The marine made the comment "The puppy was just a stray and I was doing him a favor" Are you serious??? He deserves to suffer just like that poor animal!

Posted by: Kelly | March 6, 2008 11:46 PM

I am experiencing so many emotions from this heinous act--heartbreak and extreme anger. My only hope is that this video is not real. But while I know that is highly unlikely, I only pray that there will be mass outrage and action taken by those of us who are not sociopaths like these two men. As much as we need a strong military, the way in which these men and women are trained teaches them to be cold and desensitized. This is how they are able to handle seeing there own fall in the line of duty as well as killing others on the opposite side. In order to prevent acts like this, there needs to be a restructure of how our men and women in uniform are trained--from the mind games to the tactics that are used. First a defenseless puppy then on to a defenseless child. See the pattern people? Apathy comes in all shapes and sizes. Act now!

So they threw a puppy from cliff in Iraq,
raped underaged Okinawan girls in Japan (and got away from it! Do you guys even know about it???) caused problems in South Korea...and American people are paying for them.
Can't believe it!

Posted by: Neko | March 7, 2008 02:02 AM

It saddens me greatly to read of such behavior. I can understand that war can do things to one's psyche, but this marine was apparently in Hawaii at the time. I cringe to think that such people are defending our country. It is such types of behavior, and the apparent joy in committing such an act, that most likely can lead to rape and murder of women and children. This ignorant member of the Marines is in dire need of sensitivity training.

these mental defectives are being encouraged when youtube doesn't filter this kind of content . if the guys that run youtube are making millions , they should work a little and show some responsibility.
and if telephone companies can help the Bush administration to spy on us , then YouTube can do something to track down all the animal abusers that they welcome to their tacky website.

I just saw this on dumpalink.com. I am on fire. I swear to god if I ever got my hands on that S.O.B. I would break his neck personally. And I am ashamed that any site would have the balls to post such a thing.

Posted by: jeff | March 7, 2008 03:15 AM

I can't bring myself to view this video because I would have nightmares for days. I can only hope that this sadist is shunned by his colleagues, as well as punished to the greatest extent allowed under law.

unfortunately I have heard all kinds of stories like this from my BF whose deployed. people shooting dogs for tartget practice for one thing. i wish peta could look more into these atrocities in the middle east.

What do you suggest we do to restructure our training methods without taking away from the fighting spirit of our troops?
I have seen alot of posts where people claim that "the way these men are trained makes them desensitized to killing." They have to be trained in such a manner so they won't freeze at the moment of truth. Furthermore, "If they can kill a puppy then they can rape women and kill children." Again, our Marines are the most professional and fierce fighting force in the world. They are not mindless barbarians that kill everything in their paths. People on this site need to stop over exagerating that our troops are capable of murder and rape. Of course there are a few isolated cases. But 99.9% of our military men and women are honorable and repectful troops. Here is a quote that I fell desribes the Marines pretty well.

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!"
Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945

My father was a Marine in WW2.
He was a drill instructor.
He would have never put up with someone like this monster, never.
He would have made him disappear.
My mother was in fear every night he came home from the base that he would be carrying home another stray dog or cat. We took in a lot of the homeless.
The kind of people in the service today have turned into bully's. Father was a proud Marine and a kind man.
No more proud Marines.
We have some of the worst of the worst.
This is just awful.

Judith
You should be proud of your father's service to the Corp and his country. He was part of the greatest generation and we all should be proud of him. If I ever, somehow, come across your father I will be the first to shake his hand and thank him for what he sacrificed for this country. My grandfather was also a Marine in WWII. Who knows, maybe they know each other.
Your comment that there are no more proud Marines is simply not true. I went through OCS (Officer Candidate School) in Quantico VA three years ago. I tore my ACL during that time, so my military career was over before it started. Some of the most honorable, kind, diciplined people I have ever met are Marines and I am proud to have worked with them all. Many of my friends are Marines, these people would give their lives for their country; for people like you and me without question.
You say that we have the worst of the worst in the Corp now. True, we may have a few bad examples of Marines serving today. However, the overwhelming majority of our Maines are the best of the best. These men and women are our first line of defense in any conflict. They go without question or reservations.
You say we have no more proud Marines. To the contrary, all Marines are proud!
I am not defending this marines actions and I do think he will be punished. That is what he deserves. However, he doesn't deserve bodily harm or death threats from people. Especially his family. I know what he did was wrong and I wish it never had happened.
Having said that, please do not disrespect all Marines because of one mans actions. Would you disown your entire family if a relative did something like this?
I understand this Marine may not live up to the standards set forth by your father. However, I believe your father would be very proud of the Marine Corp today, and proud of the legacy that the Marines carry forth! They still are The Few and the Proud!

Posted by: Kurt K | March 7, 2008 03:37 PM

Kurt K,
I am very proud of my dad.
I always will be.
He was a wonderful father.
I miss both of my parents who we lost 12 years ago, my mom died 8 months after my dad passed, it was awful.
Yes, there are good Marines, we have a boy coming home to San Diego this month.
He is the fellow that found a dog in Iraq and took care of him until his officer told him if he could not get rid of the dog within 5 days he would have to kill him.
In his own words he really lost it.
People that heard about this did alot of work and were able to raise $2500 to fly the pup to San Diego.
He arrived about 3 weeks ago.
The young man will be on his way home this month.
So yes, there are good Marines.
But when something so horrific as this happens,
it makes me think how bad its become.

Posted by: Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals | March 7, 2008 05:24 PM

I am disgusted...plain and simple. our tax dollars pay for this? i dont even feel i can be protected by the marines because they cannot protect a small puppy!

Posted by: Matthew | March 7, 2008 05:50 PM

Judith,
Have faith! You have to believe that the majority of these young men and women are great, not only Americans, but great people as well.
As I said before, don't confuse my posts as defending the Marine in question. I am not, he knows what he did is wrong and he will be punished for it. The Marines don't stand for nonsense like this.
Sorry to hear about parents, I know they are in a great place now and I am sure they are both very proud of what you have become.
My brief time in the Marines showed me a totally different lifestyle that only the most disiplined and professional people can handle. I am very confident in the integrity and dedication of the Marine Corp. You of all people should know what kind of people the Marines can be!

Fake....this ain't a negative comment but the quality of the video and the dog sound hes just trying to get peoples attention! Wake up.....I'm a paranormal technitian and that is too much good quality for the other sounds in the video. nothing against peta but this was a attention getter

Posted by: Shane | March 7, 2008 07:45 PM

I have soooo much to say about this!!!!!!!!!
1. I hope the (barely) people involved in this are all punished (thrown off a cliff themselves would b best), including the cameraman who is just as responsible as everyone else involved

2. How can a person do such a heartless thing. After watching that terrible video, i cannot get it out of my head.

3. I am on my hands and knees hoping that was a fake video.

4. Who r they letting into the military these days, these r the people "serving our country"????? Although i know there r many brave soilders but this is just one of the many cases of horrific evidence of animal abuse that happens in the military and the world for that matter.

5. That innocent puppy's life is just as important as any person's life and that puppy would like to live just as much as anybody else.

6. One day i hope things like this will never happen in this world of abuse to sooo many animals but it will definately b a long way away from ever coming near to an end. Thankyou sooo much Peta and do not stop helping so many animals. :)

First of all, Im outraged..... Outraged at the fact that some people blame the entire marine corps and, for that matter, the women and men that wear the uniform for ANY service to protect this Nation!! Most Soldiers, airmen, marines and sailors dont ask to get put in harms way, but they do it because they volunteered to proctect what they feel is democracy. I think they bastard should be fully repremanded for his actions. Yes im ashamed.... and saddened by the act, but im absolutely, positively do NOT discredit what the young men and women do for this country selflessly. If you want to blame anybody, blame the people that did it, not the entire military.... If you blame the military, just remember..... YOU VOTED IN THE LAST PRESIDENT WHO CHOSE THE SEC DEFENSE...... Nuff said......

Omg this is sickining. Even if that isnt a real puppy who in their right mind would kid about that!

Posted by: Ashlee | March 7, 2008 11:36 PM

My eyes welled up as I saw this video as they do at other animal abuse acts.At first i was so pissed I sent the video and petion to all my friends saying what assholes these guys are,,then after my rage,, my heart felt so heavy with saddness in that this world has come to this,,to seemingly have no heart for the innocent,to b so cruel,,These men will get thiers ,,someway,,somehow,,These types of abuses just breaks my heart,,what can I say:(

This (and other incidents you read about) makes me wonder, too, about the type of people we let into the Armed Forces for this country. In addition to whatever else they look for in a candidate, they should look for moral standards and integrity.

Posted by: Antigone1000 | March 8, 2008 12:30 PM

it made me so sick watching this clip on another web site i feel we should be doing somthing. we as americans should not support soilgers who do this to other living things. we should not be having a war and having innocent people and animals get hurt
