Topshop is one of Britain’s largest clothing retailers, and for a long time now, they’ve been busy doing for animal-free fashion what the Body Shop has done for cruelty-free cosmetics. Not only do they refuse to sell fur or exotic skins, but they advertise their ethical choices with pride. In 2006, they filled the window of their flagship store in London with this beautiful anti-fur display, and this week, they’ve outdone themselves. Check out their latest display, which draws attention to the cruelty inherent in the exotic-skins trade. It’s a piece of art.

That is great. But Topshop uses leather. And has many leather bags and shoes on their website. Isn't that just as bad?

I love it, it's so cute! I love snakes and reptiles in general. I was talking once with a friend about one of my pet snakes and they said the only thing snakes were good for was belts, shoes or handbags. You can bet I haven't talked to them since!

I would be interested to learn about the relative profit margins of this chain of stores compared to those than do sell shoes, handbags, coats, etc. that use leather, other skins, wool, or fur. It seems like with shoes and handbags in particular, there is a huge market for leather, snakeskin, etc. as there are not many high quality brands or designers not using leather at all.

Brilliant. Top Shop is not only an amazing clothing store, but a great practicer of what they preach. Great display.

TS, I applaud you! Kylie et al sporting those horrid python bags, take note. Snakes and crocs and the like feel pain too, and their deaths are truly agonizing and distgusting.

You make a good point and I agree with you. Leather is just as bad, it comes from the skins of other creatures such as cows, sheep, lambs, goats, pigs for example. Leather is also the skin of animals and should be avoided as much as possible. Being vegan, I do, and am fortunate there are so many options to choose from and can avoid buying the skins of brutally murdered animals.

ashes, topshop does sell leather and merino wool products, they just choose not to sell fur where the animal dies just for fashion.

I was really impressed with Topshop until scott pointed out that they sell leather. I hope the display makes a difference for exotic animals but as the saying goes, charity begins at home(read local domestic animals).
