The name originated from the novel "Survivor"—it does not make light of suicide, but rather indicates a person true to themselves, even if that means committing "social suicide".

"SuicideGirls seemed like a good way to describe the girls who projected confidence and individualism, whose staunch refusal to conform equated to social suicide."

Having the guts to be yourself seems like a good thing to me.

Young people, teenagers to young adults, are a lot more aware of these things than you give them credit for. They won't mistake the name or the message. Young people have an unique sophistication about these things.

I'm only 19 and I'm pretty sure I get the meaning behind this...and I think it's great! PETA is an inspiration to young people like me! I think if more people re aware of what fast food resturaunts, make up facilities, and drug labs are up to when it comes to testing and making their products, they might be a little more hesitant in aidning in their productions!

Key difference b/t spice girls and suicide girls is promoting spice isn't a problem. It's an obvious play on words. But suicide isn't an obvious play on words, as several posters here have agreed. While a few of you who have heard of them before (or who would never say that Peta has done something that isn't perfect) knew what the name meant, it wasn't obvious to everyone here who hadn't heard of them before. Use another word to promote naked women and anti-fur. It's not like I'm saying that you have to start wearing fur or put on clothes or tell young women to be more traditionally respectable. I'm just saying that use of the word suicide in connection with this isn't wise or classy.

I think its awesome that those women want to do something that brave for animals, does it really matter what the name is?

Also, to the person saying that animals are only here for us to eat them are completely and utterly wrong, I mean, what exactly do we do thats good for the earth?
Animals are exactly the same as us, they feel, have families, and are just as valid as humans. If you don't want to hear people talking about not eating meat, then dont come on the site.

I asked my 12-year-old what she thought "Suicide Girls" meant and what she would think if she saw people called Suicide Girls promoting a cause such as anti-fur. She said that it sounds "angry, depressed people who are upset with their lives" and what does that have to do with convincing anyone not to wear fur. She then said that maybe they want to kill themselves as a protest over fur and isn't that silly, because people would still wear fur and it would just be dying for no good reason. I of course explained to her that this group isn't planning to kill themselves and that I only wanted to hear her reaction to their name.

Recycled paper doesn't come from the air.. it still comes from the trees.. And yes peta did litter.. If you want to get your message out put up a stand.. don't just go around and force people to take your fliers.. Wait for people to come up and ask for the info.. Its not that hard.. I don't want to go to a concert and look at mutilated animals.. people are there to have fun not have you tell us we are bad people for eatting meat or how much poop is in our food or milk. And the hag comments... come on.. I'm sure all the peta people are hot.... ok or not but its her right to dress how she wants. How many people on here wear stuff that was made in a 3rd world country.. but some poor little kid that makes 3 cents a hour.. but you don't care about that.. your more worried about animals that are put here for us to eat.. and i'm not just here to get a rise out of you peta people i'm just here to try get another side to this.. thanx

A lot of people don't want to be subjected to learning about slavery, racism, or the many people killed during WWII, but unfortunately they have to. It is an effort to sensitize others to the sufferings of people of different ehnicities/races. That is why kids study history (social studies) in high schools. There will be those disinterested but more are reached and that is essential. It is imperative to feel empathy for others. Just as there are/were those opposed to reading/seeing/hearing about the Holocaust, it is still being taught in high schools to kids.
PETA is performing its mission: to sensitize others to the sufferings of non-human animals. The oppression of animals needs to be told especially since it occurs daily. It's all about education. No one can force you to take the pamphlet and certainly no one can force you to read it. But those that are throwing these pamplets on the ground are guilty of littering.
As far as buying from 3rd world countries, I make an effort not to buy from them. I would rather pay more for my clothing than buy from them. Try not to generalize animal advocates because you feel disdain and a lack of compassion for animals. BTW, Pearl Jam is a group I love and they always have ar literature at their concerts.

Everyone who takes the time to read and comment on this blog does so because on some level, even if they refuse to admit it, they care. "You", I, we all care. If we didn't care, if we didn't realize that we humans heap far too much suffering on our fellow creatures, if we didn't feel called to change that fact, we wouldn't bother. We wouldn't be here... reading, writing, getting fired up and firing back.

So let's not get caught up in fighting amongst ourselves. Don't get me wrong... debate, constructive criticism, questioning assumptions (including our own): all good things. Insults, condescension, and an unwillingness to check oneself: not so much. Because while we're sitting here passing judgement on each other, there are atrocities being perpetuated that we could be calling attention to, reducing, and maybe even eliminating altogether. While we're busy putting each other down, who's standing up against cruelty and injustice?

Why are people freaking out over the suicide girls posing for peta and aninmal rights?? I think its great that the girls and even holly are posing for the cause. Hollywood is full of actors and actresses that wear and love fur. Im sure it takes guts for them to step up and say no to it. If your here on the site to critisize why are you even on it? Just to nit pick every little thing. Get a life. Let us enjoy ours not eating meat. Or wearing fur. Sorry that we have hearts that care for animals and ot just for ourselves

As the name suggests, recycled paper comes only from paper that has already been used for other purposes. And it can be recycled again.

And no PETA did not litter. The pamphleteers did not throw their own material on the ground. It would be a good PR move for them, though, to pick up any discarded literature.

To the person blaming PETA for the leaflets being thrown on the ground: you are a clear example of someone who does not take responsibility for one's own actions. Pathetic!

I participated in a KFC demo, and after I found a few discarded leaflets on the ground, I picked them up. Even though SOMEONE ELSE was not taking responsibility for LITTERING, I chose to ensure that SOMEONE ELSE'S actions did not contribute to pollution.

Oh yeah, and animals were NOT "put here" for humans to eat. Animals were on this earth hundreds of millions of years before humans came along!

I am so psyched that someone chose to pick up the fliers. While it's fairly easy for a PETA person to see the connection between factory farming and animal suffering, it's REALLY hard to always make the connection between a piece of paper on the ground and animal suffering.

I don't expect PETA to be an environmental group, but the suffering expereinced by wildlife due to mundane things like washing dishes, using paper towels, driving cars, littering etc is tragic and extreme.
