How ironic, I took a stray into the vet this morning to get spayed. She just showed up one day and decided to adopt 'me'. She's really cool, she's a polydactyl cat and has 7 toes on each front paw. Here's to a flawless surgical procedure.

If each of us would just educate friends, neighbors, relatives about spaying and neutering (even pick up the tab and make the appointment and take the pet if need be!) then the suffering would go down in a huge way.

Even one litter is too many.

Awww Craig...what a nice guy.

And 7 toes? I've heard of 6, but not 7...

Not to make light, but can someone neuter one of my male parakeets...?

All he does all day is, well...on one of his fuzzy toys...

Unless I put my hand in his cage, then it's open season...

I have actually asked my vet. No they can't.

But, here's a fun fact:

They can give birds, even itty bitty parakeets, a hysterectomy. Which I guess would be the same as a spay.

Evidently it's fairly common, well not common, surgery is only performed on excessive egg-layers. And supposed to be safe and easy to do.

But my little girl bird is not the problem...heh.

i'm in the moment of education a family member in my house about fixing her pet, he's been getting aggressive each day, i need facts about the benifits because i know she wants to breed him and i've been trying hard to stop that.

Erica I have a similar situation...

My uncle has a female dog who is spayed.

He also has a male dog who is not neutered. I guess he thinks it's not necessary since the female is spayed.

However, Earl, the male, keeps running out the door every chance he gets. He does come home after a short while.

I have told my uncle time and time again that Earl is zipping out the door every chance he gets because he is out making puppies...

"Earl doesn't have time to make puppies" is usually the reply...

I don't think it takes that long.

I will keep trying, I will never give up. But my uncle is an idiot (you know how relatives are)...

This is just my humble opinion, but I beleive that by now spaying and neutering should not be optional.

We may never get all of the general public on board with this, even though pretty much every animal professional agrees it's vital and safe and indeed keeps the animals in amazing long term health!!

Every shelter, rescue group, anyone who sells or adopts out animals (cats, dogs, rabbits, in general) should be 100 PERCENT required to have them fixed before they are put out into the world.

This is the only way. Even if it's the law in Rhode Island or California or wherever, there are so many ways to hide an unneutered pet. The laws need to change right now.

When I was very young, my Grandmother's cat had kittens. They were unwanted. I noticed a bucket with a cover on it and being a curious child I lifted the lid. I saw about three kittens drowning in the bucket full of water. That image has stayed with me. I was about 5 at the time. Grandmother's can be cruel too, but she was from the old school. It's time we gave people a new education.
