Schumacher Furs Pays PETA’s Legal Fees

Well, last week, the judge in the case ordered Schumacher Furs to pay PETA more than $40,000 as reimbursement for legal fees incurred fighting the lawsuit (which he called "an extraordinary abuse of the litigation process"), and his statement in the ruling just about says it all:
"I find that awarding fees in this case will properly serve to deter putative plaintiffs from filing multimillion-dollar suits against nonprofit groups and private citizens engaged in First Amendment activities ...."
So there you have it—a victory for animals and for free speech all in one go. The cash is a nice bonus, too.

Ha Ha! And that was a nice sign they put in their own window--it always helps to remind the people picketing you WHY they are picketing you!

All very well and congrats, but are you now not taking money from a corporation you refused to buy stock from. It seems a little hypocritical to accept money earned from actiuvities you consider disgusting.
Well done on the victory though, it would be a bad world if non profit making organisations could be dragged to court.

A Proud moment for sure. Its times like these when it really pays off to be a PETA member. Some times I get down, when I see people walking around in fur (I went to Toronto this weekend and almost collapsed when I saw so many fur coats it was like a stampede) Paul, yes it is taking "blood" money but its not for personal gain. That money from those bastards is going to help even more animals. This is a very significant win for us.

Paul, when someone sues a charity, and they have to spend $40K defending themselves, you're damn well right they're going to accept a court-ordered reimbursement.
It would be irresponsible, not to mention just fucking stupid, to turn down the cash. Money coming out of the pockets of animal abusers and going into the pockets of animal defenders = a good thing. Obviously.

Interesting. A lot of the dog breeders pull the same stunts as these Schumachers.
And say the same things.,
Of course, many of these people are involved in the same lobbying groups so no surprise.

I think for the month of February the PETA Files should ban any posts using the word hypocrite, hypocritical or any of the various derivative misspellings. Is this the only derogatory word to be found in the antis' lexicon?

What would Schumachers do with this money if it didn't have to give it to PETA? Probably invest it in expanding its business. So there's really no ethical conflict at all.

Paul, is that the only lame come-back you can think of??
PETA is not "taking" this company's money, it is getting REIMBURSED for money it had to spend on this ridiculous lawsuit. The money PETA had to spend defending itself was money that was not available to help animals.
Thank goodness the judge did what was right! I would say that based on the judge's comments, he rocks!!

This was a great victory for PETA. I was wondering, was the lawsuit by the Schumachers brought under that crazy "animal terrorist" law that was snuck through congress at the end of last year? I would love to know how we can work to get that repealed!?

I live in Portland, and can't tell you how happy I am that Schumachers is GONE GONE GONE! They deserve all the bad karma they get.

Good for PETA, I do think that aome peole that wear fur don't really know the details of how it is obtained, or they don't want to. The fur retailers should be ashmamed of themselves, I wonder if they go home to their children at night and tell them what they REALLY do for a living, skin animals alive, etc.

This makes me so freakin' proud to live in Portland, Oregon. This was all over the news here and NO ONE wanted to give Schumacher's a new home to sell their bloody cruel wares....
