PETA President Ingrid Newkirk has been in India for the past couple of weeks on a tour for the Indian version of her book “50 Awesome Ways Kids Can Help Animals.” We’ve been getting daily updates about the demonstrations, rallies, and educational events she’s been attending to fight animal abuse in India, and it’s all been pretty amazing stuff. But this morning’s news was the most interesting yet:

According to India’s national newspaper, The Hindu, Ingrid was arrested last night in Coimbatore for blindfolding the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Park to protest the Indian Supreme Court’s decision to legalize a stupid macho ritual called jalikkattu, in which a crowd of men take turns taunting and abusing a terrified bull, who is forced to drink alcohol and deliberately agitated by having chili peppers rubbed in his eyes before being released into the crowd.

According to the news reports, Ingrid urged children to speak out against jallikattu, arguing that the cruel blood sport was a direct violation of Gandhi’s principles of non-violence. Ingrid described the protest as a symbolic action to close Gandhi’s eyes “towards the horror meted out to animals in the name of jallikattu.”

After detaining her for some hours, Indian police eventually allowed Ingrid to leave the city, and her Indian visit is going ahead as scheduled. I’ll keep you posted …

Way to go Ingrid!
Very good statement blind folding Gandhi’s eyes, and bring attention to the people the truth of what they do.
very Good Ingrid!

Well done Ingrid, Ireland loves you.

Is it just me, or is the human species getting DUMBER with every passing year, decade and century. What possible explanation / excuse did the Indian Supreme Court have in passing this legalized animal abuse? Quite obviously, these people in charge have the IQ of a box of rocks.

Ingrid is my hero!

Posted by: Gideon | January 18, 2008 01:24 PM

Well, I can truly appreciate her passion for animal rights and welfare. So for that alone...good job.

My family and I are vegetarians....not vegans, although we are trying more and more vegan dishes as go. Have been veggies since April of last year.

I am currently a member of PETA and several other animal welfare and rights organizations.

Sadly, after the blow-up doll protest of KFC and the tombstone protest of KFC, I think its time to put my money and time with another organization, one that has a little more class.

I am all for publicity stunts and in-your-face opposition...I believe in taking a stand and defending it no matter what the cost. I also believe that when you start to make connections that aren't there (pregnancy and spaying your animal???) and doing stupid, tacky and tasteless stunts like blow up dolls, you lose credibility.

We will continue to be veggies and buy cruelty free anytime we can...when the labels aren't lying to us. We also will continue with are TNR program with our feral cats and will do all that we can to encourage our families and friends to act with compassion towards animals (even people).

So, good luck to PETA and Ingrid...I hope you continue to save animals. When you aren't too busy acting like school children.

This was a great point made by Ingrid to blindfold Gandhi...for he would be strongly against cruel acts taking place upon animals..I do hate that she had to go to jail in India though I am sure it was not a fun time at all, but in the end it was a great statement. Thank goodness she is released.

As a Hindu brahmin, whose mums generation fought, shoulder to shoulder with ghandiji, vinobaji for indias independence and freedom,it shames one and also angers one at the same time,at the callous, cruel and inhumane behaviour of the indians for staging this ugly heathen barbarity and also one feels contempt and derision for the authorities in India for arresting blessed Ingrid newirk, instead of the organisors of the cruel and barbaric act on the poor blessed brother Bull.Indeed,if one can raise a million GIs,Tommies and good and decent Indians ,one can sort the natives out and at the same time teach them humanity, decency, love and respect for all living beings.if only, one was Emperor and King, with the power of cruel global human evil mortals and bullies, who only in some cases only undertstand superior force, which can give fight back against cruelty and tyranny, unlike the poor mute, humble and helpless blesses Bull.

It has to be oulawed and made illegal. WHat a shame on India to be so cruel as to rub chili pepper into a poor animals eyes and taunt it!! I hope the world hears about the way they are treating their animals, go Ingrid!

Ingrid,
You will always be one of the eight wonders in the world.
You did a wonderful job, just wonderful.
So many of us wish we could be there with you.
India, how sad as a Buddhist in training I'm shocked at what cruelty there is over there. This is the worst, how in the world can they do this?
They also have a large animal trading going on.
There is another place that the men take a little donkey and hundreds of men surround him and then push up against him with all their strenght.
They squeeze him to death.
"What a group of freaks"
Remember what Ingrid told us ages ago that whenever you are getting ready to protest somewhere, make sure you have a photo I.D. and a credit card.
That way we can pay our own bail, which will be very low.
Ingrid, I don't care how many times you get arrested, call me and I will pay your bail, where ever you might be.
You are working for the Greater Good, Ghandi would never have stood for this.

Watching this video brought chills to my body. I don't think I can even express in words how upsetting this new legalized "sport" is.

I have to say when I read the title I was thinking "what has she done now" and "how will anyone respect PETA" but I have to say good job Ingrid! It wasn't some outlandish act and Gandhi probably would not want to see such horrific acts! I hope the bulls are saved some day. Until then I will pray for them, and all animals being hurt.

Posted by: Julia | January 18, 2008 06:22 PM

Hey Tessa -

You say your dropping your support for PETA for groups that have more "class?" REALLY?!?! What kind of statement is that? Blow up dolls and bloody protests and the like are nowhere near as classless as the abuses to animals that are happening every minute of every day.

These "classless" acts made by PETA have stirred attention, raised awareness and won victories for animals all over the world. It doesn't matter how you deem these acts, what you call us or how superior you think you are the bottom line is Animal rights = Human rights. And to tell the truth, school children have a better grasp on that simple philosophy than most adults.

So get off your high horse, quit bashing PETA for being "classless" and channel those feelings onto the abusers…

Posted by: Debbie | January 18, 2008 06:24 PM

I agree with Tessa, however I have to commend PETA for an interesting and completely peaceful protest.

The only thing I would say is, it may have been better to have an Indian PETA member do this act, in order to show some cultural sensitivity. Having a white, blonde woman blindfold a Ghandi statue in India seems a bit culturally insensitive.

Unless Newkirk was concerned that her PETA workers may be arrested for the act, in which case I think she was right to do it herself.

At least it was peaceful and of course for a very important cause. I hope they can help those poor bulls.

I thought Ghandi was for the animals. I guess we should only like the creator of Buddhism. Or maybe Dalai Lama. Religion is just very hypocritical. That image is very disturbing. I support Ingrid on what she did. Ppl need to learn how to respect animals and life itself. Dumb idiots. Why not put chilli on their f*ing eyes. See if they like it. Ignorants. I <3 Ingrid Newkirk. True inspiration.

Posted by: Marisela | January 18, 2008 09:53 PM

Thank you, Ingrid and PETA, for working to bring attention to this kind of sickening human behavior -

The criminals are the people who torture and kill innocent animals (and people). Police officers should be working to stop the cruelty by locking up those who torture, instead of arresting the people who are trying to stop the cruelty and torture.

How could anyone think blindfolding a statue merits arrest while there are mobs of people brutalizing innocent, suffering animals?

Jalikkattu in India is Bullfighting in Spain is Rodeo in the United States is ......

Posted by: PeaceSurge | January 18, 2008 09:55 PM

This despicable practice is also common in South America where it is called "Ferra de Bois". It is literally a demonic event to torment and abuse the bull/cow to its death. Praise Ingrid for the courage to stand against evil!! We love you Ingrid!

Posted by: McK | January 19, 2008 11:11 AM

Dyland, the holocaust was a cultural expression. Does that mean it shouldn't have been stopped by "outsiders"?

Cruelty cannot be justified because it has lasted for a long time. Neither can it be justified as some sort of cultural component.

PETA is an awesome organization and I am proud to be a part of it. Millions will be subjected to unimaginable torture today. What are you doing to stop it?

Posted by: Brad | January 19, 2008 11:32 AM

Debbie, Hi.

I hate to see arguments on blog that we'd need to blind Ghandi for! Let's be civil.

I agree with Tess. If we want to preach to the choir, then fine, PETA can be as outrageous as they want. But Debbie, do we want to entertain OURSELVES or do we want to make the public change their behavior towards animals?

Wouldn't it be better to actually change people's behavior so no more animals were abused? If you agree with me, then we need to ask ourselves what the public would respond to.

Blow up dolls, porn, defacing gravesites, if the public is already cynical about PETA then those acts will make them more cynical and they will never try to read PETA literature.

Peace and respect, Debbie! Thanks for hearing me out. :)

Thank you Ingrid. We love you!!!

Posted by: Jamie W. | January 19, 2008 06:19 PM

Cultural sensitivity?! What the hell is that when it means that animals are tortured and killed.
"Culture" and "tradition" are word used to veil torture, abuse and sadistic pleasure derived from violent crimes against innocent creatures. Bullfights, seal hunting, jalikkattu, run of the bulls, have nothing to do with culture and everything to do with scum.
Go Ingrid! You have my full support. I don't care how "UN-classy" your stunts are as long as they bring on change for the animals.

Posted by: melissa | January 20, 2008 10:55 PM

Indian,
You think that blinding folding your nations father is shameful, but how shameful toward him is this animal cruelty? Your country is shaming your nations father much more with this abuse than Ingrid Newkirks statement of blind folding him so he would not see the things that would hurt him dearly. I think if you could ask Gandhi which was more shameful to him...his statue being blindfold or the horrible cruelty inflicted on these living beings , he would have no trouble telling you that animals should not be used in this way...and was glad someone tried to hide his eyes from all this disgust. If your country respects Gandhi at all they will stop doing this that he would totally disapprove of.

Posted by: Dana | January 21, 2008 01:20 PM

I second that, Mike.

Posted by: K | January 21, 2008 01:50 PM

Brad, don't compare the Holecaust to the mistreating of a bull. The Nazis wanted to exterminate an entire culture because they hated everything Jewish. The overhelming majority of Germany had no clue to what was acutally occuring during the war. To say the Holecaust was a cultural expression is ingnorant, it was the ideaology of a small minority in Germany that played upon peoples misled fears of Jews through propaganda. Just becasue you are German, that doesn't make you a Nazi. I don't think that India has anythng personal towards bulls, it is an old time tradition passed down from generation to generation!

Posted by: Kurt K | January 21, 2008 02:06 PM

to all of the posters telling us that this is an ancient indian tradition i just could say this: as far as i know india is one of the most animal-respecting countries in the world! when they start now with this inhumane practices i suppose that it's a sign of the today's degenerating process of this world and has nothing to do with ancient indian traditions! thank you ingrid - for attracting the world's attention on this dispiseable and horrible, according to my opinion 'new occurrence' in modern india!

Posted by: RAINBOW WARRIOR | January 21, 2008 03:19 PM

Mike Q

Your comment on January 19 @ 10:34 am is just right---I totally agree. No group is perfect and even though I disagree with some of PETA's objectives I still support them.
The human race once again exhibits its vulgar, cruel and violent side in reference to this ritual in India where these bulls are made to suffer.

To those defending culture and tradition, please read HISTORY!!!! Lots of examples of culture and tradition that would make your hair stand on end and feel shame for being human exist from every ethnic group. I am sure none of you want to bring back the Inquisition.

Maya, just want to remind you that women in their struggle for suffrage in the first movement, and in their struggle for equal rights in the second movement, performed some really questionable stunts. During their quest for suffrage they burned buildings, broke windows, chained themselves to government buildings and when arrested refused to eat. Unfortunately they were force-fed. The second movement saw women burning their bras, marching topless (got arrested) made hostile remarks about men and the list goes on. PETA has a blog where animal activists can discuss AR issues but the HSUS has a ridiculous blog where you really can't and they censor worse than communist China. I don't really think PETA is ridiculed because of their antics solely but anyone and any group is ridiculed and hated because of being an advocate for animals. PETA, in-your-face of course, will be hated the most. But I rather questionable antics than none. HSUS with its soft animal welfare stance only makes me want to regugitate. I needn't feel I have to agree entirely with PETA, and I don't, but I do agree it is the most visible group that has garnered changes that have been beneficial for animals most than any other group. Being vegan, most of society views me as extreme or militant. Who cares??!!! I think killing animals by the billions is the most extreme and the most violent, oppressive behavior. But I also don't agree with humans eating animals be it organic and even with ceremony. No animal needs a ceremonial thanks they simply want to live. And humane slaughter is an oxymoron. I am sure you would agree that you would rather a cannibal let you live than perform a ceremony of thanks as they cut your throat. Peace and joy!!!

HI Ana!

Your first paragraph to me was by far the most eloquent statement in favor of PETA's tactics. I never thought of the women's movement in that light and I wholeheartedly agree with you.

All I can say is that breaking windows, burning buildings, etc, for the women's movement is far different than the way PETA conducts itself on a day to day basis.

The women's rights people may have performed civil disobedience, but I've never heard of them waving around blow up dolls and running around graveyards, making a joke out of a murdered family, etc. This is where they fall down - it makes them seem like they think everything is a joke.

I don't mind the naked fur protests - they are fun and happy and got PETA lots of attention. But that kind of protest must be done JUDICIOUSLY. Too much porn and they just look like a porn site.

Just for the record, I donated my car to the Sea Shepherd Society so as you can see I'm not against civil disobedience. But being crass and immature really shoots animal rights in the foot.

I'm also not opposed to breaking into buildings to save animals. But again, the brave people of women's rights don't go around making a joke out of everything.

I love PETA and I would not critisize them if I thought they couldn't do better for themselves.

Ana, you're one of the few people who is intelligent enough to get what I'm saying. Of course you don't have to agree with me, but I think it's worth discussing.

And thank you for making it a civil discussion! You rule!

I will think about what you said.

Many blessings!!

Posted by: Maya, CVT | January 22, 2008 01:24 PM

And just for the record, I LIKED Ingrid's peaceful blindfolding Ghandi protest, all I wanted to point out was that it would have been more meaningful and thoughtful had a native Indian person performed the act.

Having a blonde, white person do this in India is just fodder for the press to make animal rights folks look clueless.

I also was suprised that Ingrid is an atheiest...but refers to heaven during her HBO documentry. I curious how that works. I have decided I will focus my interest and support to an organization that isn't about grandstanding and publicity but primarily focusing on helping the every day dog on the end of a chain that is desperate for help...

You say most activists aren't intelligent enough to get what you are saying???? wow!!!
did you catch that one activists???

OK Maya, let's have it:
how long have you been an animal lib activist?
how long have you been a peta member??
when did Ingrid ask you for your opinions on how to run peta better???

Posted by: kickass | January 22, 2008 10:27 PM

I support Peta giving out dog houses to dogs that otherwise would have no shelter at all, or their shelter consist of a plastic barrel no matter what the cost. I am sure that like many of us Peta is working to change laws to where chaining dogs is no longer legal anywhere, but until that point for the dogs stuck out in the elements dog houses are a blessing.....Peta goes out to neighborhoods locally, and hands out these dog houses during this documentary the video cameras did follow them out, but I am sure this does not happen often so I am not sure how this could be classified as grandstanding or publicity instead I see it as a very good deed.

I've already bored people to tears on the PETA blog with my credentials. Ask anyone. Sorry, but if you want more info you can click on my name and go to my website. Peace! ;)

Dana, I TOTALLY agree. Laws can only do so much. We as citizens have to be proactive and come up with creative solutions.

I don't know if you're aware of the situation with stray cats in Greece, but it's very very sad. Hans Sylvester made a name for himself photographing the cats, and they're beautiful (as are the port towns in Greece) but the cats are in terrible shape.

My friend has a Greek neighbor and he locks his cat outside all winter. All she can do is beg him to let the cat in. Sometimes it's up to us to do what we can, even if it's not perfect.

Great words, Dana! ;)

judith, you have nads calling yourself a freedom fighter for animals while supporting animal welfarers!!!! how do you eat your humanely slaughtered cow: rare, med, well done with your tofu??? you blockhead!!! you gave animal welfarers an open invitation on an animal lib site!!!! don't you fuckin dare now to get in their face when they pisss you off, you schizass!!!!!

Posted by: kickass | January 25, 2008 07:16 AM

Kickass,

Judith is way more devoted to animal rights than you'll every be. You should be ashamed of yourself, cursing at another person like that.

It's so obvious that you're just here to hurl obscenities at people. You care more about spewing obscenities everywhere than about helping animals.

Say anything you want in response to me, pal. I think your cursing is really boring and unoriginal. Everyone here knows who the real schizo is. I bet you've never helped an animal in your whole life.

Posted by: Maya, C.V.T. | January 25, 2008 07:53 PM

Kickass some of us were wondering how old you are, and what grade you are in.
Your youth may explain your lack of understanding and compassion.
We understand your having problems and would like to help you in any way we can. It may be a good idea for you to ask for an appointment to see your guidance counselor in school, they are often a good place to start.
Maybe you could talk to your parents or a minister in your church. We want you to grow up with a good attitude, and a gentle heart so you can be a positive influence in your community and to the animals you love so much.
Peace to you.

Kickass or whoever or whatever you are,
How dare you come here and insult the great group of activist's we have here.
You insult the intelligence of Maya and many others.
What do you not understand about Animal welfare/liberation?
Your parent's need to start using the the parental control's to your computer.
Maya, I love hearing about everything you do for the animals, you are an inspiration for so many.
Judith

Thank you Judith! We do indeed have so many good people on here, and we stand in solidarity with each other.

Namaste!

Maya you remind me of Terri Irwin in her early years in Oregon.
I am always amazed to read your most thoughtful posts. You have a gentle way about your self and a deep devotion to our animal friends.

There are so many wonderful caring people who come to this blog to learn and teach and I feel its a disservice to everyone who comes here for the good of our animal friends and find posts from people who disrespect the most compassionate caring people who work hard to make a difference.
I am proud to have the privilege to learn from all of you who come in the spirit of caring and change for the better.
Thank You.

I'm so proud of your courage to stand up for animals!

What you did was great.

Posted by: Shana | January 31, 2008 07:13 PM

why? why people do that, why? what is the point. Ingrid you are the best, I wish I could do half what you do. Thank you for been lould voice for the animals.
Peace for all animals.

Don't these people have anything better to do? Yes, Gandhi would be ashamed! But its people like this who assasinated him! What should we expect?!?

Posted by: JD | February 1, 2008 01:04 AM

Wow, Peace to You, I'm honored to be compared to Irwin - and yes her wildlife rehab facility saved so many lives! You and I know that it is always more effective to be kind and respectful.

Many blessings!

Posted by: Maya, C.V.T. | February 1, 2008 11:39 AM

Ingrid,

You are the best! I admire you so much for all your work.
The human kind is getting coward day after day. Their anger and desapointment need to be released at the weakest ones, the innocent, pure and defenseless animals.
It just makes me nauseated all this cruelty happening around the world.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 1, 2008 05:14 PM

God Bless you Ingrid!!!!

Posted by: Laua Blanchette | February 3, 2008 12:04 PM

That was amazing! I think Gandhi would have been proud.

Posted by: Heather | February 3, 2008 05:54 PM

Ingrid, as always, you're miles ahead of the rest of us in your actions for animals. You are the most courageous, selfless and daring defender of animals I've read about. I am extremely proud of you.
Kickass you, too, rule. Your audacity gladdens my heart. Ana Judith,Michelle, and other ARAs whose names I've forgotten, you, too, give great voice to animals. Maya, I'm glad you care for animals but I cringe whenever I read your comments. There's a smugness to your words that is most distasteful. You position yourself as the voice of reason. Ingrid doesn't need your advice to make PeTA better. She knows what has made PeTA the most effective voice for animal rights across the world. Thanks Ingrid for inspiring us all.

Posted by: lynda downie | February 4, 2008 02:32 AM

Way to go Ingrid-you are truly a hero, a woman who walks what she talks!

Posted by: Melanie | February 4, 2008 11:34 AM

Maya has devoted her life to wild life and animal rights.
Ingrid listens to good advice and encourages us to do what we can for the animal, just as Maya does.
Would it suprise you to know that Ingrid respects Maya for her good work.
I would tell you to email Ingrid and ask her for your self.

Posted by: Peace to You | February 4, 2008 01:01 PM

Peace to You - hey, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your words and support. You are truly wonderful.

Lynda - thank you for speaking to me in a civil tone. I do appreciate that. ;)

I want people to understand, I could never give advice to Ingrid. She is truly a saint and certainly does not need my help, she's perfect just the way she is.

You and I have seen animals suffer, and we are passionate about spreading the word, and you and I know the facts.

But Lynda, you must understand that I've also seen certain women suffer horribly - sexism, abuse, etc and especially in certain countries and in cultures where women are disrespected.

That makes me more "sensitive" to sexism and cultural misunderstandings, just like I am sensitive to animal rights. I also know my facts.

That does not mean I am giving "advice" to PETA. This section is called the "Comments" section so it is implied that what I write here is simply my opinion.

If I were so arrogant as to think I could give advice to PETA, I would email them and tell them what to do. I have not done so.

I hoped it was obvious that my words are just my "comments" and opinions.

Thank you for listening to me rant, Lynda! ;) Peace!

Posted by: Maya, C.V.T. | February 4, 2008 02:22 PM

cringe?
Why?
Maya is very respectful in her posts.
Her love and care for animals shines brightly!
makes you cringe?
thats an odd thing to say about someone who is so devoted to the animal rights movement and devotes her life to them.
she makes you cower, feel fear? I dont get it, how can you fear some one who is so gentle and kind?
the word cringe means:
1. to shrink, bend, or crouch, esp. in fear or servility; cower.

Posted by: I dont get it | February 4, 2008 02:22 PM

Maya, Oprah would be proud!

Posted by: Peace to You | February 4, 2008 02:57 PM

Well I guess I've been told off in your rush to Maya's defense. Loyalty to fellow ARAs is indeed a good thing. But just keep in mind that each of us has a unique sense of a person through his/her comments. More is conveyed than just the words s/he writes. Ie. From my 1st post some of you felt I needed a scolding and an etymology lesson on the word 'cringe'. It's not fear that made me cringe at Maya's comments.
Anyhoo..can we just agree to disagree and move on in our mutual concern about animals?

Posted by: lynda downie | February 5, 2008 02:22 AM

Way to go! I live in India too, and study in Grade- 9, I have tried to do something about the abuse done on cows, buffaloes and dogs in India on the streets, but have been told to shut up quite a few times because I'm young. I visited the peta india site, and I think there's a lot more to be added to that website. I'd like to help in bringing up the peta India website and making people aware of it. I'm a proffessional photographer (even though I'm 15 yrs). I would love to volunteer and take pictures, even if I have to go undercover.
Inform me if you need help.

Thankyou
PS: The Supreme Court really arrested you Ingrid? My whole school's with you (about 800 students)!!

Posted by: Neha | February 5, 2008 08:28 AM

Lydia,
I think your heart is good and your words are honorable.
For me we can agree to disagree.
Please remember when your reading Maya's posts that she does speak from her heart. She is thoughtful and knows her facts:)
It takes a very special person to devote ones life to a cause which is what she has done.
None of us are always right and we do have different opinions, which is good!

I and most others here respect Maya for
her strength, courage, Knowledge, hard work, true devotion and her good heart. She does work hard and long hours to make a better world and life for us and our animal friends.

Peace to you always Lydia

Posted by: Peace to You | February 5, 2008 12:05 PM

Lynda,
I cringe when I read comments from Maya's ivory tower too. Her smugness and arrogance are exhausting. Long live PETA, with or without her!

Posted by: Spay and neuter immediately, please | February 5, 2008 02:19 PM

I WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT PETA, YOU GUYS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE NEEDED SO BADLY FOR THESE ANIMALS.
INGRID YOU ARE A HERO TO MANY, ESPECIALLY THE ANIMALS.

MY PRAYERS ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU, I AM SURE GOD HAS A PLAN FOR EVERYTHING AND WHY THESE THINGS HAPPEN I DO NOT KNOW, BUT I THANK HIM FOR PETA AND THE CHANCE TO BE A MEMBER.

THANK YOU PETA!!!!!!!!!!1

Posted by: annette | February 5, 2008 03:11 PM

To 'Peace to you' We simply differ in who we feel admiration for. For me, that's hands down, Kickass and Ana. Lynda

To 'Spay and neuter immediately please' Thanks, that was really nice of you. Lynda

Posted by: lynda downie | February 6, 2008 01:55 AM

I feel admiration for all who come here in the spirit of sharing information, experiences and points of view which lead us in a positive direction and by doing no harm to one another.
Peace...

Posted by: Peace to You | February 6, 2008 05:29 PM

spay and lynda, you appear to be shooting the messenger, not the message. Demonstrated when I see words like "ivory tower" and "cringe" but no argument against differing views, only personal invective.

Peace to you said it all:"She is thoughtful and knows her facts"

The truth hurts, but it will set you free.

Posted by: rojo | February 6, 2008 05:43 PM

Very good Rojo...you speak the truth and you have the ability to see into the real problem here.
Well done...

Posted by: Peace to You | February 7, 2008 10:26 AM

Rojo, the only message I ever get from Maya is putting PETA down while bragging about herself and pointing out, ever chance she gets, that she does not donate. That is why I find her tiresome.

Posted by: Spay and neuter immediately, please | February 8, 2008 05:24 AM

spay, i can understand your feelings on the issue.
maya does not seem to have much time for peta, but I do think she is genuinely for animal rights and her comments are generally valid.

My thoughts on are that using words like smugness/cringe demonstrate that what someone has said is reasonable and people don't really disagree but dislike how they said it. More importantly don't like that they said it at all.
I do agree that maya doesn't have to rub it in about not donating to peta, but perhaps the question really should be why someone with such an obvious love of animals, who's vegetarian and is devoting her working life to study them is unable to support peta's general antics.

I don't mean to pick on you personally, spay. That's not my intent.

cheers

Posted by: rojo | February 10, 2008 08:38 AM

It's cool, rojo, I didn't think you were picking on me. I agree that Maya has the ability to be a great animal advocate. I just don't understand why she spends so much time on PETA's website and blog when she so clearly dislikes the organization. There are more moderate groups out there that anyone who is offended by PETA's antics could get on board with.

Posted by: Spay and neuter immediately, please | February 11, 2008 09:45 AM

hi spay, obviously I can't speak for maya, my take on her disagreements with peta would be that they bring all animal related groups into disrepute when they go over the top, death by association. Which ultimately is not the best outcome for animals.

Posted by: rojo | February 12, 2008 09:03 PM

ingrid you are one crazy lady but you r pretty brave to do that :)

Posted by: jannet | February 15, 2008 01:05 PM

Ingrid, I don't know where the world would be without you. You are a true angel for the people and the animals. I support your work 100%. This is just horible. Animal abuse in any form is just unacceptable and it should be stopped. I don't understand why people are acting the way they do. There is no compassion or respect for living things. GOD Bless YOU!!!!

Posted by: Michelle | February 16, 2008 06:57 PM

My goodness,
Maya, I would not have known what to do and how to find the homeless cats, home that had found her way to our home.
She traveled 3 miles from her home when she was scared by two wild grandkids and she took off from this elderly husband and wifes
My daughters helped by networking and she was home once again, - the gradkids.
Thank you so much maya.
