Denny's Victory!

Posted at 10:11 AM | | CommentsComments (127)

PETA got a call this week from representatives of Denny's restaurants confirming that the company has ended its partnership with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Denny's smart decision to sever ties with a company that (among other things) beats animals with steel-tipped hooks to make them perform required a little bit of pushing from our end, including protests at Denny's HQ and outside Denny's CEO Nelson Marchioli's speaking engagements, mailings to every Denny's restaurant in the country, personal meetings with restaurant managers, countless calls and emails from our members, a spoof website, and a shareholder resolution calling on the company to end its affiliation with Ringling.

The point I want to really drive home here is that with awesome, creative animal-free circuses like Cirque Du Soleil delighting audiences around the country, there's absolutely no reason why a company looking to do a circus promotion would ever need to get into bed with Ringling Bros. It's outdated, it's unethical, and it's bad for business. And we'll do everything we can to make sure the world knows that.

Denny's joins General Mills, Burger King, Liz Claiborne, MasterCard, Ford Motor Company, and Sears, Roebuck and Co., all of which ended their sponsorships of either Ringling or UniverSoul circuses following negotiations with PETA. Here's what PETA Director Debbie Leahy had to say about the victory:

"We commend Denny's for distancing itself from the cruelty to animals that defines Ringling. Denny's has realized that supporting animal abuse is no way to promote a family-oriented business."

A huge thank you to everyone who took action on this campaign—calling or e-mailing Denny's, participating in protests, or simply encouraging their friends and family to boycott the company until it ended its association with Ringling. This is a big victory for the animals suffering under the Big Top, and it sends an important message to circuses that use animals that their days are numbered. But they already knew that.

And finally, if you have a moment, please click here to ask AAA to follow Denny’s lead and sever all ties with Ringling Bros.

Good for Denny's!!

Every time I have been driving by a Denny's I have just been spitting mad that the company would choose to get involved with a corrupt business like Ringling Brothers.

That's great! One of our local radio stations is giving away circus tickets and I sent the head DJ an email with the link to PETA's circus page.

Way to go Peta! and speaking of Burger King, I just tried the BK veggie burger and it was delicious! Now i can go out to fast food with my meat eating friends and actually have something to eat besides french fries or a potato.

HI,
I just want to take the time to thank you. That is so great to know that you have ended that partnership. After watching the video of how they treated the animals, I was discussed that someone could act like that and for you to do something about it and get rid of garbage, is amazing!! Thanks so much.. Those animals are better off and it brings me peace to know that!! :)

YOU ROCK!!!!

Great job, PETA!

Posted by: Canaduck | January 8, 2008 02:18 PM

Thank god, I hate the circus to begin with, even as a child I was afraid of it. So way to go PETA for getting Denny's to do what is right. You can teach an animal, any animal how to do things if you treat it right and take your time. There is a small cricus in the area where I am, and all of the animals have wonderful living enviornments and are handled with such love and care, its a joy to see.

But this circus has got to go.

Happy. happy, happy for Dennys and for PETA, of course!!!

Posted by: Patricia | January 8, 2008 05:53 PM

Carlyn--All circuses and animal acts are morally wrong. Animals do not exist to provide humans with unnatural entertainment. We have NO right to use them for our amusement. The animals your local circus use now may be treated well (as far as anyone can tell)--but who knows what goes on behind the scenes.

Also, all circus animals are "retired" eventually. Mnay end up in roadside zoos or as victims of canned hunting.

The animals used in circuses had to come from somewhere. Many are taken from their mothers at a young age. All mothers miss their babies and mourn their loss. Plus, imagine the terror and bewilderment the babies face after they are removed from their families and FORCED to learn frightening "tricks."

Circuses which exploit animals must be relegated to the dumpster of history--which is exactly where they belong.

Posted by: Kelley | January 8, 2008 05:54 PM

Thank you for seeing the light, Denny's. Hurrah for the elephants, who are one step closer to freedom from circus life in America. Ringling, count your days left in business....

YEAH! This is good news to all animals!

Posted by: Karlo A. Aganinta | January 8, 2008 08:16 PM

Thanks PETA.

Posted by: kaewta yong | January 8, 2008 11:38 PM

Congrats PETA and thank you Denny's.I think the best circus you could see animals in is the wild nature itself where the animals belong to and other companies should follow the great example the Denny's did. This is a victory but there are still lots to do for animals.

I eat there once in awhile but not often because it's on another side of town. More power to them and of course PETA-YAYY!!

Posted by: Renate Uhl | January 9, 2008 07:13 PM

i think u ppl are way too over protectiv for animals...the anikals with the circus are happier than getting roads laid out thru ther home...they proved that animals (depending on breed) on average liv 20 yrs longer in captivity. i think that the animals liked being groomed...dogs love it wen u pet them and bathe them. the san francisco tiger incedent was prolly bcause he found out he wasnt getting prime rib bcause they are sending him back to the wild...

Posted by: hi... | January 10, 2008 12:38 AM

so now dennys is some great company? even though all they sell is animal byproducts? you guys are a bunch of hypocrites. stop shoving your half assed vegetarian beliefs down our throats. go vegan or go home.

Posted by: niggertits | January 10, 2008 01:38 AM

Thank you Peta!! I have never liked circuses either. When I was a child we had a small circus come through our town and it had a rhinoceros. The rhinoceros was in a small cage and could not move at all. I absolutely hated it.I felt such sorrow for that rhino. What kind of life is that?

Thank you Dennys for helping these poor animals. The animals never asked for this and have no choice but do as their trainers says. Elephants are intelligent animals and this must be very frustrating and depressing for them.

I am very glad PETA is working to elminate all circuses that have animal acts.

My husband and I have refused to join AARP and AAA because of their partnership with Ringling. We stopped eating at Denny's for the same reason. We are glad we can now return and support them.

More presure needs to be put on AAA and AARP.

Posted by: Maggy Jones | January 10, 2008 11:45 AM

To niggertits (what kind of name is that? Do you wear a white robe?): You said: "so now dennys is some great company? even though all they sell is animal byproducts? you guys are a bunch of hypocrites. stop shoving your half assed vegetarian beliefs down our throats. go vegan or go home."

People eat out and most places
have veggie meals or can make them. When we are on the road we sometimes stop at Denny's for breakfast. We are not pigs like most people and can fill up on home fries, grits, and whole wheat toast with fruit on the side. We can also get a lettuce and tomato sandwhich with a variety of veggies like cukes, etc.

Just becasue you can't think beyond a slab of meat don't think others can't be creative with thier on-road meals.

As for eating at places that serve flesh, there will come a day when you people will have to be creative in finding meat.

Posted by: Maggy Jones | January 10, 2008 11:57 AM

I have hope now!!!! Im so relieved Denny's took a stand for the better. I am happy I sent emails and had a little but satisfying part in Denny's decision to drop Ringling Bros. Please everyone, send emails to dodge asking the same thing. I did!!! I can't wait until the circus is gone forever.

Posted by: Kaylin | January 10, 2008 12:17 PM

I just joined PETA today. Glad to learn that I can try Burger King for a veggie burger.

Now I want to learn about PETA's attitude toward companion animals. I have none; trying to think through the issue.

Posted by: Barbara | January 10, 2008 01:17 PM

YAY!! It is a wonderful feeling to know that you contributed towards the welfare of an animal. So happy... :)

Posted by: John Carmody | January 10, 2008 05:29 PM

Barbara said, "Now I want to learn about PETA's attitude toward companion animals. I have none; trying to think through the issue."

Good question, Barbara. I wrote PETA once to ask them just that and this was their response:

"Please be assured PETA does not oppose kind people's practice of sharing their lives and homes with animal companions whom they love, treat well, and care for properly. We even have a website,
http://www.HelpingAnimals.com, devoted to helping people become better guardians."

I remember the circus as a kid and loved it, didn't you as a kid? Now think about then.
Now all these kids that could have had the best family outing at the circus will be crushed. THXNK2UALL.

HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps ANimals will start to have a brighter future.

Posted by: Robin | January 11, 2008 11:08 AM

Joe

How sad! The kids could actually attend circuses that don't have animals being abused to perform "tricks' contrary to their nature. Instead, they will see talented humans perform willingly in an atmosphere where no animals had been beaten, abused or killed in an animal-free circus. What a shame, showing/teaching children how to be compassionate and responsible!

Posted by: Ana | January 11, 2008 12:43 PM

once again something that makes no sense... dennys just sells the tickets! they have nothing to do with the circus!!! PETA you need to go to the source! not some resteraunt that sells the tickets!

Posted by: Nefarian | January 11, 2008 07:46 PM

Nefarian, circuses with animal acts like Ringling Bros. rely on corporate sponsors for advertising and marketing. If they continue to lose sponsors, they will not be able to continue because of financial losses.

PETA goes to the direct source (the circuses) as well as the indirect ones (Denny's, AAA, etc.).

Joe, if you think that children are going to be deprived if they no longer have to watch animals being abused (go to www.circuses.com if you really want to know what happens to these animals) then you are a sad person. And what about the children and other spectators who have been injured or killed by circus animals that have gone insane from the years of abuse and captivity? Isn't it better if they attend family outings where they can be reasonably safe?

Thank you for this info on the circus. I was going to take my 3 year old to the circus in 2 weeks here in Charlotte. Just on aa whim I thought that I should check to see if PETA approved the Ringling Bos. Now I've watched the video on the site and I am disgusted. I can't believe what I saw. I am going to share this info with as many other moms as I can find.

Posted by: Michelle | January 16, 2008 07:38 PM

Yay! I could eat at Denny's again! Sure, it isn't perfect, but it does offer boca burgers, so that's commendable.

Posted by: Joseph Villagomez | January 17, 2008 06:33 PM

As a child in the early 60's, my family went to the circus because we weren't aware of the cruelty involved...knowledge is power, but it is also responsibility/accountability -- I explained to my own 3 kids why we didn't patronize circuses and they "got it" just fine -- when told the truth, they wanted no part of it....what's entertaining about watching some poor creature behave in an unnatural way as the result of systematic torture???

Great job, Peta. And a BIG THANK YOU to Denny's!

Denny's...you've just won back an old customer.

Posted by: Laura Sarmiento | January 17, 2008 10:34 PM

while this may be a victory to the countless animals harmed in circus, this is no win for the millions of pounds of meet wasted in Denny's Co. each year. I worked for Denny's as a waitress for quite some time, and as a vegitarian it was hard to watch them promote advertising such as "Valentines is for lovers- especially meat lovers." i watched as cooks threw out meat they messed up on, toss it at each other for "fun", and on top of it customers threw out the most waste. People just don't realize what they use. Between their no-recycling policy, food waste, a who-knows how much carbon released from machines, and transportating trucks, I just wish people would look past the appearence. Although they serve nice boca burgers, and yes, this is a victory, each dollar you spend is still going towards a company that serves up suffering at the cheapest price they can turn double the profiet. And while it is hard to live ethically in our consumeristic society, lets try not to forget the true price we pay. victory would be eliminating such companies all together.

Posted by: chasety | January 17, 2008 11:26 PM

Children are compassionate by nature, and so much more aware than we give them credit for -- give them the facts, that circuses are cruelty against animals masquerading as "fun", and they will have no problem with finding family entertainment in more humane ways. Do you really want to amuse your family at the expense of helpless creatures who didn't have a choice and who cannot speak out in their own defense? When given the facts, my own 3 kids were adamant that circuses were not something they wished to support. And with regard to the statement that circuses have always been a part of normal, everyday American life: that's the same defense that many people have used for slavery, child abuse, and other social injustices that needed to be corrected.

Posted by: Amy (Gill - but don't post last name) | January 18, 2008 08:48 AM

Yay! I'm glad they stopped, because Dennys has awesome boco burgers. Yum.

Posted by: Theresa | January 18, 2008 10:15 AM

Thank you Denny's so much for discontinuing your support for the circus.

For those of you who wonder how PETA can applaud a company who serves up pork at their restaurant, one thing at a time folks.

Plus, when you go to Denny's, you could ask the manager if they have meat free alternatives or better yet, if they can support getting our food supplies from farmers who are local and treat their animals better. You are not going to get 100% of the world to go meat free, compromise and see to it that farm animals are raised humanely and slaughtered humanely, that's what the goal should be.

Posted by: karen | January 18, 2008 10:21 AM

This poverty of ambition is ruining the animal rights movement. Now is not the time to push for "humane" standards of animal husbandry. The HSUS industry-partnership welfarist paradigm is a huge step backwards. We need to harness the interest in animal welfare to make the case for animal rights - abolition of animal exploitation. We owe the animals nothing less.

And heree i am again almost crying when i find out the fabulous news that peta has helped those poor innocent animals! I also need to give lots of thanks to Denny's for actually beliving in these animals and stoping their support~! Go PETA AND DENNY'S

Posted by: Rachael | February 5, 2008 04:55 PM

It's so funny that I read this article today. They just put up a Billboard on my way to work this morning that declares that Ringling Brothers is coming to Cincinnati. After reading this I am going to tell all my friends NOT to take their kids to this show. I had no idea the degree of mistreatment that goes on to these animals. It makes me sick to my stomach. And the fact that big corporations attach their names to cruelty makes me more sick. Great job PETA for convincing companies they are wrong to support this kind of behavior.
And, as a side note to Carol, it's not about eating meat to me. It's about torturing innocent animals and shoving hormones and antibiotics into their bodies just so they get a little fatter and we can have a bigger piece of steak. Would you put hormones into your child or yourself? Think of it that way.

Way to go Denny's.

Wow Denny's did a good job. Kudos to them!! Down with all circuses. In my opinon, circuses aren,t cool even if they did treat their animals in a kindly matter!! I will never see a circus in my whole entire life unless they start treating their animals with respect!!!! :(

This is great news. I really needed some. By the way, I was so proud to read this list of famous Vegans that goes all the way back to Jesus. These are my hero's... http://www.happycow.net/famous_vegetarians.html

Very good, Denny's. I'm glad you saw the light!

Posted by: Bob McChesney | May 9, 2009 04:24 PM

i remember when i was a child going to the circus i thought it was cool i was young and nieve not knowing what really goes on something came over me today @ the show the animals are not happy there and the trainers who handle the animals should be whipped and mistreated just the same as they do to their animals then put behind bars and wild animals deserve to be left alone and happy I WILL NEVER AGAIN BRING MY SON TO ANOTHER CIRCUS AGAIN!

Posted by: jennifer | May 10, 2009 09:13 PM

I feel really sorry for all the animals, they have to go through all that pain.I WISH I was a vegetarian but my MOM says it has protein. I should and will convince her,i would do anything for the environment,PETA (my most favorite charity),and the animals.

I thought circuses were innocent, now I know it's abusing, it feels like we need revenge to let the workers know how much it hurts to be forcing entertainment.... Good work, Denny's! Now we have a place that cares!

Posted by: Brian | May 21, 2009 12:43 AM

PETA rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: alesha | June 7, 2009 03:24 PM

cool even though i didn't know that Denny's sponsored that circus i don't go to circuses because i am afraid of clowns that Cirque Du Soleil looks cool and there is no animals to abuse maybe Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus could do the same

Posted by: Kaylan | July 1, 2009 10:34 AM

Hallie,

Denny's is commended for ending its affiliation with the cruel circus & thus creating financial difficulties for Ringling Bros. & hopefully one day, putting them out of business for good. Peta cannot be expected to coerce all restaurants to quit serving meat; that is just not possible. Let's celebrate the small victories & keep working towards the goal of ending animal cruelty in all its forms.

Nefarian,

Get a clue. Denny's was a corporate sponsor of the circus; they support & encourage people to attend. If all companies would end their affiliation with the circus they could put them out of business! Out of the business of cruelty to animals!

Posted by: Grace | July 2, 2009 12:44 PM

Chasety,

This is still a victory for animals. Nothing is perfect in this society & never will be. Can we PLEASE just be happy about the small victories? The goal was to end the sponsorship & that was achieved. Don't be such a Negative Nelly!

Woohoo!
Way to go, Denny's. (:

Thanks PETA!
This is just one step closer to stopping the abuse.

Ringling can kiss my butt.

Posted by: Celine | July 12, 2009 09:28 PM

yea! one step closer to ending animal exploitation and abuse in circuses and beyond...there's more work to do!

Posted by: kristin fields | July 14, 2009 11:59 AM

This is so good. All animal circuses are horrid and no animal deserves to be forced into doing dangerous tricks for our entertainment and selfish pleasure.
It's great to see that someone is making a difference well done peta this is brill!
