To all my fellow Canucks, eh:
I know this is off-topic (sorry, Jeff), but this is an issue that needs our attention. As you may know, there is a Private Member's Bill by Ajax-Pickering MP Mark Holland to update Canada's archaic (dating backing to 1892) animal cruelty laws. This bill, C-373, makes meaningful changes to the current law.
It is unfortunately up against a bill by Senator John Bryden (now called S-203, but formerly designated S-213), which, barring a possible election call, is much closer to being passed. This is an ineffectual, toothless bill that falls far short of effectively protecting animals or remedying the status quo. If passed though, the issue of animal cruelty legislation will disappear from Parliamentary radar for a long time.
I spoke with Mark Holland's office—Mark is a vegetarian, by the way—for their suggestions on what I could do.
Petition: There is a downloadable petition available (http://www.queenwaldorf.com./Petition.html) in English or French. This petition has not yet changed the S-213 typeset to S-203, but it is still a very good template. This site requests completed petitions be mailed to them, although Mark's office prefers to receive the petitions directly.
His office mentioned the people to most productively target with letters or e-mails as:
• Prime Minister Stephen Harper
• Rob Nicholson (Minister of Justice, member of the cabinet)
• Your local MP

To my fellow Americans!! Thank-you Mike for bringing this issue up! And like the Youth Justice Criminal Act this bill may get lost in the suffle. We need all the help we can get, two voices are better then one!! Thank-you in advance from all the Animal Rights people here in Canada! Love and Peace!!
