Now I know why my friends Allie and Virginia came into the office this morning a slightly different color than normal (respectively, a sort of off-yellow and a nice olive green). Pics from this beautiful demonstration in Times Square have been circulating around the ol' blogosphere today—the girls were outside the M&Ms World store to let passersby know that Mars Candy performs cruel tests on animals. In violation of its own written policy, the candy company is currently funding a study at UC San Francisco in which rats are force-fed by having plastic tubes shoved down their throats, then cut open and killed. In addition to our boycott of the company, PETA is filing a legal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over Mars' false statement.

Anyway, enough of the depressing stuff for now. Check out the great pics below, and if you feel like helping out with our campaign, I’ve also posted the code for our anti-Mars Web banner for anyone who wants to put it on their site. You can learn more about the campaign here.

You need to have some male M&M's, guys.

Posted by: Canaduck | December 21, 2007 05:20 PM

Fantastic - I love it! :)

Posted by: Kelsey | December 21, 2007 06:55 PM

for peta's usual over the top publicity stunts.... this is pretty friggin stupid.....

but i must admit, they look cold enough to wear a fur coat

Posted by: steve | December 21, 2007 06:58 PM

PETA's demos are never too "stupid" or "over the top" as compared to the horrific treatment suffered by the animals in these situations. These kinds of protests are sometimes the only way that people will take notice of what is really happening to the animals.

It makes "no goddamn sense" that BILLIONS of animals are tortured and killed every year in the name of useless (and just fucking ridiculous!) tests.

Somehow I don't think it will take Mars Inc. very long to change its ways, just like Pepsi, Coke, Ocean Spray and Welch's all had pretty fast responses to PETA's protests...

Way to go ladies!

Posted by: Michele | December 21, 2007 09:01 PM

These ladies are proving their commitment, dedication, compassion, courage, and fortitude for the sake of the suffering, tortured animals. They have strong virtues, which are unbeatable.

My many, many thanks to them for all that they are doing - and keep up the GREAT work, ladies!

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A SUPPORTER OF PETA,BUT AFTER WHAT I SEEN IN LAS VEGAS MADE ME WONDER, HAS PETA DONE SO MANY STUPID STUNTS THAT THEY HAVE LOST THEIR POWER.AS I WATCHED THE LITTLE NAKED GIRLS IN FRONT OF M&M WORLD I WAS EMBARASSED FOR PETA, I MYSELF WANTED TO GET A SIGN AND PICKET PETA, THE SIGN WOULD READ SHAME ON PETA FOR EXPLOITING DUMB NAKED YOUNG GIRLS..

Posted by: rita lemon | December 22, 2007 11:29 AM

I think its absolutly brilliant.I agree with Michele it wont be to long till Mars changes there ways.

Posted by: Maryann | December 22, 2007 03:47 PM

I completely agree with Michele and Ariel.

The protesting these girls are doing is called good marketing. Everyone knows sex sells and this is a great way to get people's attention.

Posted by: Jaclyn | December 22, 2007 10:55 PM

WOW These girls have alot of courage :] I'm so happy that some people are trying to make a difference. I hate Mars so much now.. I hope they stop testing soon :[

Posted by: Emily | December 23, 2007 10:56 AM

I don't think that any demonstration against cruelty to animals is ridiculous. In fact, i think that it's necessary for people to actually notice the huge problem that is staring us right in the face, animal cruelty. People take notice to people and cruelty, what about animals, mans best friend? We need to take notice! Way to go girls!!!

Posted by: Todd | December 23, 2007 10:15 PM

That is awesome! Extremely intelligent way to handle things!!! Good job!

Posted by: Aleasha | December 24, 2007 02:09 AM

PETA discriminates against fat women. That is right people. They never let fat women protest naked. PETA is a nothing more than an orginization that caters to promoting self-absorbed girls hoping to become actresses or porn stars.

Posted by: Travis Henry | December 24, 2007 11:04 AM

Wake up people! Don't you realize that these women are VOLUNTEERING to be naked to stand up for animals? That means it is their choice, unlike the animals, and when it is their choice, there is no exploitation of women involved. I've gladly participated in several PETA demos of my own free will and if painting myself blue or yellow or going half naked will help to raise awareness of animal suffering, then it is my pleasure to do so! Go PETA and go PETA M&M's!

Posted by: jennifer | December 24, 2007 01:30 PM

This is the best damn thing I've ever seen! Someone needed to satge a demonstration. It's about time some light was shwon on this. Maybe now the public will actually look @ this issue.

Posted by: Viola | December 24, 2007 01:40 PM

Travis Henry: you are not an intelligent person: if PETA would put fat women on their front pages: what do you think would be the reactions of some toadstools as you are:?????????????????

Posted by: tarantula | December 24, 2007 03:02 PM

Even though PETA does go over the top sometimes, if it saves even one animal from torture and death, it's worth it. Whatever it takes to save any defenseless creature is well worth the price. If it means making people hate you or stripping down naked (fat or not), do it! I wish more people had the courage to stage these demonstrations and should be able to do so without the fear of being arrested.

Posted by: churlagirl | December 24, 2007 04:08 PM

There is absolutely no need for animal testing nowadays, especially for candy making, how stupid is that.I'm so grateful for Peta and for people like Indrid Newkirk,i hate the fact that people think animals don't feel pain, and that they don't have rights, fucking assholes, animals are much better that fucking people, look at the world,we fucked it up ourselves, and we still don't get it.Fuck Mars!

Posted by: judy | December 24, 2007 07:16 PM

WHY IS ALWAYS SOME STUPID PEOPLE WRITING STUPI THINGS.THE DON'T CARE ABOUT ANIMALS, THEY CARE ABOUT HUMANS ONLY, SO WHY COME HERE AND WRITE STUPID THINGS

Posted by: liliana | December 24, 2007 08:53 PM

judy, I have to agree with you wholeheartedly. Humans really have fucked up the whole earth with so-called "progress". We have a longer time on this earth now because of "progress", except we have more diseases, and are basically dying longer, not living longer. We do have the brainpower to change things, but until everyone wakes up to reality, we are going to cause our own extinction. I will add to your comments to say fuck Mars and ANY company or individual who keeps testing on animals. Basically it is legalized psychopathic behaviour!

Posted by: Michele | December 26, 2007 04:32 PM

Do the girls know what is in the pigment they applied to their bodies? So instead of "animal testing", we use "college kid testing"?

Even my vegan daughter said she thinks this is a stupid publicity stunt. She said this to me as she brought me some M&M's.

Posted by: ctyankee | December 26, 2007 05:31 PM

This is great!! If you need a body builder to help protect these chicks, let me know!! KEEP FIGHTING!!!!

Posted by: bobby | December 26, 2007 10:34 PM

i support peta.because,i am animal lover since my childhood.i am a bangladeshi national living and working in jeddah, saudi arabia.since eight years i am taking care ofmore then 150 stray cats and
dogs.i spend my monthly earn for feeding those helpless creatures i love as like as my childrens.i am so sorry for
the cruelty aginst animal in human hand around the world. there need to adopt international law for animal right and animal protection.animal represent the beauty of life, and they play an important role in our socity.this natural earth wiil be meaningless without the animals.as animal lover i can not imagine this world without animals.if humanbeing can not love animal they can not love each other.

Posted by: mohd shahidullah | December 27, 2007 11:45 AM

ctyankee, the point is that the women in this protest got to choose what they put on their skin. The animals being tested have NO FUCKING CHOICE!!!

Your daughter is not a very good vegan if she is deliberately promoting something that she knows is causing harm to animals.

Posted by: Michele | December 27, 2007 12:00 PM

Dont get any ideas bobby

Posted by: Caboose | December 27, 2007 12:56 PM

Michele,

You still shouldn't support Mars just because you dislike PETA's publicity stunt. That makes absolutely no sense. Write to PETA if you disagree with them, but don't react by supporting a company that uses inhumane testing methods. That's awfully childish.

Posted by: Erin | December 27, 2007 01:23 PM

I said it didnt make sense because PETA is against Mars and their candy, but now we have PETA painted as M&Ms, thats why.

Posted by: Caboose | December 27, 2007 02:25 PM

Erin, that was not my comment - I am all for this type of protest. The commenter's name is below their comment. You will see that I also responded to the same person you intended, who was "ctyankee".

I'm posting this as a generally neutral person.

People are stupid. I cannot deny. Testing on animals is indeed cruel, and I cannot help but feel compassion. I also feel the same way about hunting for sport. I feel that necessity should dictate this world. Take what's needed, no more, as it were.

I do eat meat. I will say that straight up. I'm nowhere near ashamed of that fact. On the other hand, crappy tests and hunting for sport is no reason to take lives, however insignificant they seem...

It makes no sense to cry about little mice being tortured. Mice! For fuck sakes...MICE!!!! Im sure you PETA people would have no problem setting down a mice trap in your home to get rid of your new unwanted "pet"

Enjoy wasting away your only life fighting for stupid little mice!

Posted by: Gucci TFS | April 7, 2008 02:55 AM

How disappointing, as usual misrepresentation in the media... The girls aren't naked as promised in the headline.

Posted by: Bah | April 7, 2008 09:28 AM

SPECTACULAR!!!

Posted by: keni | April 9, 2008 11:44 AM

FOR THOSE THAT THINK THIS IS STUPID ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS THAT I UNDERSTAND WHAT THESE GIRLS WERE TRYING TO DO. THEY WERE TRYING TO GET ATTENTION! I MEAN THIS IS DIFFERENT AND INVENTIVE. GOOD JOB GIRLS!

Posted by: Katherine | April 11, 2008 07:19 PM

I think that it is wrong and unjust for animals to be tested as a cheap mean for billion dollar companies to save profits, instead of using human subjects in a more legalized system. However, despite all of the "tricky dick" comments of PeTA's protestors being naked and painted as m&m's to promote the rights of the animals tested at the university- I must say good on them, who has the guts to do what they did. Wheither they are 'stupid' or not they share common ground for the goodness of defining the cold hard reality of the situation - animal testing, a much cheaper, easier, and conclusively inhumane issue in our world. Good on them, and as for anyone who should critize these brave, young girls - GO TO HELL, ýou cannot post negative comments behind a screen fully clothed and blab about your own issues-get over it. I look forward to see such people campaigning and making the greater cause known to the world. Advocate!

I was shocked to find out that Mars funded animal tests. I had no idea. I'll definitely stop purchasing. :)

Hershey's candy is much better anyway.

Posted by: W | May 3, 2008 08:14 PM

This makes no sense. Why would Mars candy have to test this out on innocent animals?

Posted by: Zoe | May 7, 2008 03:36 PM

WAY TO GO!! I went around protesting, but not as good as u guys!!!!
