Now I know why my friends Allie and Virginia came into the office this morning a slightly different color than normal (respectively, a sort of off-yellow and a nice olive green). Pics from this beautiful demonstration in Times Square have been circulating around the ol' blogosphere today—the girls were outside the M&Ms World store to let passersby know that Mars Candy performs cruel tests on animals. In violation of its own written policy, the candy company is currently funding a study at UC San Francisco in which rats are force-fed by having plastic tubes shoved down their throats, then cut open and killed. In addition to our boycott of the company, PETA is filing a legal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over Mars' false statement.

Anyway, enough of the depressing stuff for now. Check out the great pics below, and if you feel like helping out with our campaign, I’ve also posted the code for our anti-Mars Web banner for anyone who wants to put it on their site. You can learn more about the campaign here.

You need to have some male M&M's, guys.

Fantastic - I love it! :)

Posted by: Kelsey | December 21, 2007 06:55 PM

for peta's usual over the top publicity stunts.... this is pretty friggin stupid.....

but i must admit, they look cold enough to wear a fur coat

Posted by: steve | December 21, 2007 06:58 PM

PETA's demos are never too "stupid" or "over the top" as compared to the horrific treatment suffered by the animals in these situations. These kinds of protests are sometimes the only way that people will take notice of what is really happening to the animals.

It makes "no goddamn sense" that BILLIONS of animals are tortured and killed every year in the name of useless (and just fucking ridiculous!) tests.

Somehow I don't think it will take Mars Inc. very long to change its ways, just like Pepsi, Coke, Ocean Spray and Welch's all had pretty fast responses to PETA's protests...

Way to go ladies!

Posted by: Michele | December 21, 2007 09:01 PM

These ladies are proving their commitment, dedication, compassion, courage, and fortitude for the sake of the suffering, tortured animals. They have strong virtues, which are unbeatable.

My many, many thanks to them for all that they are doing - and keep up the GREAT work, ladies!

Posted by: Ariel | December 22, 2007 07:14 AM

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A SUPPORTER OF PETA,BUT AFTER WHAT I SEEN IN LAS VEGAS MADE ME WONDER, HAS PETA DONE SO MANY STUPID STUNTS THAT THEY HAVE LOST THEIR POWER.AS I WATCHED THE LITTLE NAKED GIRLS IN FRONT OF M&M WORLD I WAS EMBARASSED FOR PETA, I MYSELF WANTED TO GET A SIGN AND PICKET PETA, THE SIGN WOULD READ SHAME ON PETA FOR EXPLOITING DUMB NAKED YOUNG GIRLS..

Posted by: rita lemon | December 22, 2007 11:29 AM

I think its absolutly brilliant.I agree with Michele it wont be to long till Mars changes there ways.

Posted by: Maryann | December 22, 2007 03:47 PM

I completely agree with Michele and Ariel.

The protesting these girls are doing is called good marketing. Everyone knows sex sells and this is a great way to get people's attention.

Posted by: Jaclyn | December 22, 2007 10:55 PM

WOW These girls have alot of courage :] I'm so happy that some people are trying to make a difference. I hate Mars so much now.. I hope they stop testing soon :[

Posted by: Emily | December 23, 2007 10:56 AM

I don't think that any demonstration against cruelty to animals is ridiculous. In fact, i think that it's necessary for people to actually notice the huge problem that is staring us right in the face, animal cruelty. People take notice to people and cruelty, what about animals, mans best friend? We need to take notice! Way to go girls!!!

Posted by: Todd | December 23, 2007 10:15 PM

That is awesome! Extremely intelligent way to handle things!!! Good job!

Posted by: Aleasha | December 24, 2007 02:09 AM

PETA discriminates against fat women. That is right people. They never let fat women protest naked. PETA is a nothing more than an orginization that caters to promoting self-absorbed girls hoping to become actresses or porn stars.

Posted by: Travis Henry | December 24, 2007 11:04 AM

Wake up people! Don't you realize that these women are VOLUNTEERING to be naked to stand up for animals? That means it is their choice, unlike the animals, and when it is their choice, there is no exploitation of women involved. I've gladly participated in several PETA demos of my own free will and if painting myself blue or yellow or going half naked will help to raise awareness of animal suffering, then it is my pleasure to do so! Go PETA and go PETA M&M's!

Posted by: jennifer | December 24, 2007 01:30 PM

This is the best damn thing I've ever seen! Someone needed to satge a demonstration. It's about time some light was shwon on this. Maybe now the public will actually look @ this issue.

Posted by: Viola | December 24, 2007 01:40 PM

Travis Henry: you are not an intelligent person: if PETA would put fat women on their front pages: what do you think would be the reactions of some toadstools as you are:?????????????????

Posted by: tarantula | December 24, 2007 03:02 PM

Even though PETA does go over the top sometimes, if it saves even one animal from torture and death, it's worth it. Whatever it takes to save any defenseless creature is well worth the price. If it means making people hate you or stripping down naked (fat or not), do it! I wish more people had the courage to stage these demonstrations and should be able to do so without the fear of being arrested.

Posted by: churlagirl | December 24, 2007 04:08 PM

There is absolutely no need for animal testing nowadays, especially for candy making, how stupid is that.I'm so grateful for Peta and for people like Indrid Newkirk,i hate the fact that people think animals don't feel pain, and that they don't have rights, fucking assholes, animals are much better that fucking people, look at the world,we fucked it up ourselves, and we still don't get it.Fuck Mars!

Posted by: judy | December 24, 2007 07:16 PM

WHY IS ALWAYS SOME STUPID PEOPLE WRITING STUPI THINGS.THE DON'T CARE ABOUT ANIMALS, THEY CARE ABOUT HUMANS ONLY, SO WHY COME HERE AND WRITE STUPID THINGS

Posted by: liliana | December 24, 2007 08:53 PM

judy, I have to agree with you wholeheartedly. Humans really have fucked up the whole earth with so-called "progress". We have a longer time on this earth now because of "progress", except we have more diseases, and are basically dying longer, not living longer. We do have the brainpower to change things, but until everyone wakes up to reality, we are going to cause our own extinction. I will add to your comments to say fuck Mars and ANY company or individual who keeps testing on animals. Basically it is legalized psychopathic behaviour!

Posted by: Michele | December 26, 2007 04:32 PM

Do the girls know what is in the pigment they applied to their bodies? So instead of "animal testing", we use "college kid testing"?

Even my vegan daughter said she thinks this is a stupid publicity stunt. She said this to me as she brought me some M&M's.

Posted by: ctyankee | December 26, 2007 05:31 PM

Posted by: mohd shahidullah | December 27, 2007 11:45 AM

ctyankee, the point is that the women in this protest got to choose what they put on their skin. The animals being tested have NO FUCKING CHOICE!!!

Your daughter is not a very good vegan if she is deliberately promoting something that she knows is causing harm to animals.

Posted by: Michele | December 27, 2007 12:00 PM

Dont get any ideas bobby

Posted by: Caboose | December 27, 2007 12:56 PM

Michele,

You still shouldn't support Mars just because you dislike PETA's publicity stunt. That makes absolutely no sense. Write to PETA if you disagree with them, but don't react by supporting a company that uses inhumane testing methods. That's awfully childish.

Posted by: Erin | December 27, 2007 01:23 PM

I said it didnt make sense because PETA is against Mars and their candy, but now we have PETA painted as M&Ms, thats why.

Posted by: Caboose | December 27, 2007 02:25 PM

Erin, that was not my comment - I am all for this type of protest. The commenter's name is below their comment. You will see that I also responded to the same person you intended, who was "ctyankee".

I'm posting this as a generally neutral person.

People are stupid. I cannot deny. Testing on animals is indeed cruel, and I cannot help but feel compassion. I also feel the same way about hunting for sport. I feel that necessity should dictate this world. Take what's needed, no more, as it were.

I do eat meat. I will say that straight up. I'm nowhere near ashamed of that fact. On the other hand, crappy tests and hunting for sport is no reason to take lives, however insignificant they seem...

It makes no sense to cry about little mice being tortured. Mice! For fuck sakes...MICE!!!! Im sure you PETA people would have no problem setting down a mice trap in your home to get rid of your new unwanted "pet"

Enjoy wasting away your only life fighting for stupid little mice!

Posted by: Katherine | April 11, 2008 07:19 PM

I think that it is wrong and unjust for animals to be tested as a cheap mean for billion dollar companies to save profits, instead of using human subjects in a more legalized system. However, despite all of the "tricky dick" comments of PeTA's protestors being naked and painted as m&m's to promote the rights of the animals tested at the university- I must say good on them, who has the guts to do what they did. Wheither they are 'stupid' or not they share common ground for the goodness of defining the cold hard reality of the situation - animal testing, a much cheaper, easier, and conclusively inhumane issue in our world. Good on them, and as for anyone who should critize these brave, young girls - GO TO HELL, ýou cannot post negative comments behind a screen fully clothed and blab about your own issues-get over it. I look forward to see such people campaigning and making the greater cause known to the world. Advocate!

Posted by: tia carpenter | May 30, 2008 10:30 AM

Hmmm... now these tests that Mars is supposedly doing on animals sound pretty fucking ridiculous so I'm taking their existence with a grain of salt (I've never heard of this anywhere else, but I'm about to go do more research.) But that's besides the point, I wholeheartedly disagree with this. This is just another one of PETAs over-the-top publicity stunts. To feel strongly enough about something that you'll strip naked for it then you're headed in the right direction, but this just seems like exploitation. There are much more intelligent things you can do to protest.
I disagree with animal testing and everything the PETA is for, but I disagree with PETA. Their publicity stunts have made me lose a lot of respect for them.

Posted by: Lauren | May 30, 2008 10:41 PM

Hint: A vegan diet is the cleanest way to eat in the world. There's no such thing as a 'fat' animal lover because if they love animals, they're vegan. If they're not, they're hypocrites. And to all those complaining about PETA's demonstrations, the world is so numb to anything that doesn't revolve around them, it takes something bold and in your face to catch attention. And before you knock it, tell me: What have you done to make your world better? These girls are trying to save helpless animals from idiotic, useless tests and you are...doing what? That's right, you're complaining because they're naked. Oh, God help us from the naked ladies!!! Thanks for doing your part for humanity.

Posted by: Haven | June 7, 2008 06:08 PM

I get that animal testing can be over the top and unnecessary, but how does being naked in New York solve anything?

Won't having naked ladies outside your building want to make most men want to continue whatever it is that they're doing in order to keep the attractive naked ladies there?

Oh, and being vegan is an impossibility. No matter what you do or where you go you're either using animal matter or affecting animal life.

I disagree with animal testing. I believe there are more ethical ways to test products. I think the young women who protested got a lot of attention, just like they wanted to do (I don't care for public nudity and would have chosen to protest some other way).

I read the letters that PETA sent to Mars (a link can be found at the bottom of www.marscandykills.com). It appears Mars did not run the experiments and they may not have been aware that money they granted to universities was used for the protested experiments.

I hope Mars pulls the funding now that they have been made aware. (Or, if I am being cynical, now that other people know they are aware.) I hope the publicity stunt makes a difference. Maybe the stunts can be G-rated next time.

Great way to protest except i think its kind of disturbing for children

Posted by: breanna | June 27, 2008 06:27 PM

For one of you who said people who are animal lovers and not vegan are hypocrites: Get a life. I am a meat-eater, dairy eater; and I still love animals. I NEED to eat meat. I get very sick if all I eat is veggies and things for more than a day. My mother is an animal lover, and she gets sick if she only eats veggies and stuff for a day. You have to realize that some people NEED TO EAT MEAT.

Stinkin' idiots. PETA is crap.

Posted by: Julia | July 1, 2008 04:51 PM

Nichole :]
Well I think this is possibly the greatest protest in the history of protests.
Props for the effort in trying to raise awareness about the horrible truth about Mars Candy. I've been off of it ever since I found out about it almost a year ago.
My friends think it's stupid to care so much, and eat it anyways.
But really though, what makes an animal's life less valuable than ours?
But really though, I wish I was that brave to do that.
So way to go girlssss. :]

Keep up the good work. :]

Posted by: nicholeNIGHTMARE | July 9, 2008 09:46 AM

Julia, you just think that you cannot be veg. Once your body adjusts, you won't even miss meat. That meat is a poison to you... a drug. Your just feeling the repercussions of your addiction like any addict would on getting clean. Your body will adjust and then be healthier. If you're still sick, then you're probably not eating what you should be.

It's not hypocritical. You can't be an animal lover and eat meat. Your dog or cat is no different than that cow or pig that you had slaughtered so you could eat it. The only reason you think different is because culture has told you that it's okay. The proof is in other cultures... They may think it's ok to eat your dog, but not that hamburger. IT'S JUST OUR CULTURE. But it's not okay to eat any animals. They have a right to life just as we do. That ham sandwich you just ate, it could have been just as good of a pet as your dog. If you love your dogs/cats/hampsters/parrots, why not love the pigs, fowl, cattle, and goats too? Treat them equally because they are all the same. If you don't believe me, then go raise one of these animals. You'll see that if they're treated the same way as a pet, they will be just as good of a pet. THEY ARE THE SAME! Love them all, or love none of them. It's your choice.

Posted by: Tara | July 11, 2008 08:37 AM

Haven, hate to disappoint you, but there is such thing as a fat animal lover.

mapashhe, and what about you? What you done to stop it?

I also think it was stupid that PETA has had women protesting naked not once but twice. It makes people lose respect for PETA. Protesting is good to let people be aware of the problem, but after you guys do that you should then take the problem to the law. With so many supporters, PETA may be able to pass a law against animal torture. But naked women protesting would only make people aware of one problem: PETA goes over the top.

Posted by: Karen | July 18, 2008 09:47 PM

i did not know mars did this to animals.i am so disgusted by this. i buy my daughter m&ms all the time but i can guarantee i wont anymore. i cried when i seen the video.i have told pretty much everyone i know about this and they wont buy mars candy anymore

Posted by: rashonda | July 22, 2008 08:13 PM

I am all for this protest. It doesn't give PETA a bad name at all, in my opinion. It shows that some people at PETA will do anything to save animals and that we are committed. It was there decision if they wanted to go almost naked. Way to go!

Also, to ctyankee, if you eat M&M's, you aren't a vegan. Read the ingredients.

Posted by: Katherine | July 28, 2008 12:01 AM

i think somtime you must take big measures to stand up for what you belive in..i however am a veg..but its not for peta..i just hate the taste but i dont belive you should stop eating meat its the way of life animal eat other animal do you see any of them protesting? animal cruelty is just wrong.. i care about every living animal and to make animals suffe for a test you dont need is just stupid.. if no one cared about animals and only humans peta would not exist. i think you girls did a great jod and i support peta but i dont think they expect you to be vegan. sence i know some of them eat meat themselves.. animal testing is wrong and cant be dignafied but eating them can hate to tell you but vegans live shorter lives and you can die with out meat your body relies on proten we are not rabbits who make there own proten we reliy on other animals as do other animals who also eat other aniamls to survive.. i dont have to be a science major to know that all vegans have proten substutes in there food in other words fake proten some people bodys arent easly tricked and can not survive with out the real proten eating aniamls is not wrong but hurting and torturing them is..

Posted by: samantha | July 28, 2008 03:07 PM

Hey, it might be a little over the top, but thats what gets peoples ATTANTION the most. To show that the real problem is animal testing. AT LEAST THEY'RE DOING SOMETHING WHILE WE'RE ALL HERE WRITING ABOUT IT! I think it's great those girls care, even if it IS a little over the top, but hey it gets peoples attention and gets points accross that animal testing is a form of cruelty, and all animal abuse is horrible and wrong. Thank you girls.

I am happy to see that people are trying for the saftey of animals. They deserve to live happy lives and shouldnt be used for their fur or tusk. They feel pain, just as we do and they know the diffrence between love and hate. They are here for us, to keep us happy, help us live through life. If we didnt need them they would not be here, but they need us just as much as we need them. We can live without putting them through pain.

im completely against Mars candy for this whole thing. theres no need to test this stuff on animals. what the hell is the point of injecting crap directly into mice, jamming them in tubes and sticking the tubes in cold water? people dont do that shit, so why see what happens when u do it to animals?! thats insane! this whole stunt with the naked m&m's, yeah okay it was a little extreme but something needs to be done to get the word out about this sick testing stuff. i personally didnt know about any of the testing until my friend sent me a link to marscandykills.com today. i watched the video and it was sooo sad. i didnt think i could just like stop liking M&M's but now i have nooooo desire to even think about buying a bag of them. my friend that sent me the link literally became a vegitarian. how nuts is that? but anyway, my points are:
1. Animal testing is fucked up and unnessesary.
2. M&M's and Kudos and 3 Musketeers and all of those arent that great so dont eat that shit til they stop this.
3. yeah some of PETA's actions are a bit crazy, but its a nessesary crazy thats getting people's attention about this. i applaud them and most def think they should keep up the great work! Go PETA!

Posted by: Lizzie | January 13, 2009 08:34 PM

I'm not so into the naked part, but these demonstrators were dsoing a great thing! I had NO CLUE about the atrocities performed against animals by mars inc. until my friend found www.marscandykills.com when researching for a school project and showed it to me. Good work, PETA! I'm going to tell everyone I know about the horrific things mars has done. if we work as a team, we can make a difference.

Posted by: Julia Griffin | January 19, 2009 11:11 PM

I'm no so sure about the naked factor. There might better ways than standing colorfully painted and lacking apparel of any kind (aside from revealing underclothes) in the middle of NYC to get attention. Barrack Obama created a huge surge of attention without a single such demonstration. Perhaps peta could redefine themselves and use a texting network instead. I would sign up!

But as for the message, go PETA! I had no clue about the atrocities being funded by Mars inc. until my friend, Rachel, who was researching for an oratory against animal testing found www.marscandykills.com and showed me.

One other thing that many people don't know- Proctor and Gamble lies to its employees. A certain p.r. rep for P&G and close family friend told my mother, sister, father, and I that P&G only tests on animals that already died of natural causes, testing what reaction the skin or fur had to the applied product. Even with company loyalties put into account, this person would never lie to us. So clearly, this is what the company told him/her. I'm not disclosing anything about his/her identity, for fear that he/she will get fired. But this is a serious problem that needs to get out, and this seems like a good place to report it.

I can't believe this! Why would a candy maker need to test on animals? In fact, why
do they need to use calves (baby cows) stomachs to make their candy?
I just bought a bag of mini Milky Ways, I had no idea about this, I am sending the bag to MARS with a letter of my distaste. I am never buying their candy again unless they cange their policy. And I am letting everyone I know hear about this! ICK!!!!

WHOA WHOA WHOA.

Garrett;

Mice are NOT 'stupid little mice', they are magnificent. They don't have to be your favorite animal, but at least respect them. How would you like it if someone called you 'a stupid little person'? You wouldn't, I bet. They are living creatures, they are miracles.
