I’ve been taking a break from the Vivisector of the Week posts for the past month, but when my colleague Justin told me about these two nasty little specimens, I knew I needed to highlight their work—because, well, it really is something to behold:
Eliot Spindel and Judy Cameron both work at a place called the Oregon National Primate Research Center, and they specialize in traumatizing and hurting monkeys.
Eliot Spindel
Eliot Spindel has squandered more than $3.5 million of taxpayer money since 2000 in an attempt to show that (wait for it) smoking during pregnancy can be bad for the child. It seems like Mr. Spindel could have saved himself some trouble by just asking someone, but he wanted to do it the hard way, by impregnating monkeys, injecting them with dangerous levels of nicotine, delivering the babies pre-term via caesarian section, then killing and mutilating them shortly after they’re born. |
Judy Cameron
I don’t know whether there’s something in the water over at ONPRC, but Spindel’s colleague Judy Cameron seems to share his fascination with performing expensive and painful experiments in the service of a mind-bogglingly self-evident piece of information. Cameron’s work involves separating baby monkeys from their mothers to see how much it traumatizes them—which, as we already know, is an awful lot. Now, thanks to the long hours that Judy and her predecessors have spent in the lab torturing primates, we know that babies suffer when they’re ripped from their mothers and deprived of affection. Thank you, Judy. |
Wonderful work those guys are all doing over at ONPRC, huh? We’re going to see what we can do to make sure their whole operation is shut down for good.
Comments
This is not surprising. ONPRC has been known for years for its useless and cruel experiments on animals. Once an institution develops this type of reputation, it automatically attracts other researchers with low ethical standards. These researchers do not really care what kind of research they perform, as long as they can convince the bureaucracy to give them grant money. It is all about publish or perish and the public is too ignorant to realize how much money is being wasted in the name of "research". It seems like a never ending viscious cycle. These two people put real researchers to shame and are not deserving of the title "researcher". Difficult choice, but lets give the title to Ms Cameron.

At this moment, vivisectors are torturing and killing animals for profit. I'm glad PETA is committed to exposing and ending these atrocities. With determination and agitation we can abolish animal experimentation. Let's do it!

They both just absolutely disgust and sicken me. I simply cannot decide which one is the most evil of the two.
Posted by: Michele | November 12, 2007 09:42 PM
These aren't scientists.
They are CON ARTISTS stealing money for nonsensical, fake "studies."
Wasting money that could be spent doing something useful for humanity.
This kind of experimentation is middle-class crime and theft.

These sick ***** have been doing the same HIDEOUS so-called scientific experiments for years in the "supposed name of science". Well, it's a no brianer to me that if they haven't figured out whatever it is they claim to be researching by now, they OBVIOUSLY NEVER WILL.Definitely, Not this way.
Posted by: c | November 13, 2007 01:56 AM
I guess these people both have a PhD in the bloody obvious - a lot of animal researchers seen to hold that qualification.
Are we voting?
Posted by: DailyVegEditor | November 13, 2007 02:18 AM
that Spindel guy definately gets my vote. God, how sick can people be? That guy is seriously an arsehole.
and the womans no better

Again Peta must make the General Public aware that their Taxes are paying for these cretins and the horrendous cruelty they inflict. Peta you are just ' pissing ' about with these blogs and going no-where., we regulars whom comment . . already are alive to these stories.

Two dangerous morons torturing and killing innocent primates. Mad, sadistic science continues. Hard to choose which sadist is the worst. I will go with Judy this time as being the worst one of the two.
Michele, Ariel, Michael Q.
We will be inundated ad nauseum with it's cut and paste routine. Must be a junior high project for it. LOL!!!! It and the other sick supporters of mad violent science will use any specious argument to support this sickness. Peace!

Eliot Spindel or Judy Cameron? They look like they were to ripped from their mothers at birth but unfortuatly were both spared death so they can move on and do it to others! You both get my vote!! "Free The Monkeys" Fortuatly you'll both get what's coming to you!

Jacob Dikjstra, M.D.
How succinctly put!!! I so agree.
Posted by: Ana | November 13, 2007 12:35 PM
They're both morons, but Cameron gets my vote. I love all the comments, and I think Kelly and Dr. Jacob cut through the crap with laser-like precision.
Posted by: Mike Quinoa | November 13, 2007 12:47 PM
There is simply no words for these two monsters.
They are both the cream of the crop of shit.
I think I might start calling myself Isabella instead of Judith.
Check out the look on their faces, they both look like morons.
You are right Ana, the "it" thing that enjoys walking through slaughterhouses barefoot is going to love cut and paste while wallowing
in it's own shit.
Posted by: Judith, Freedom Fighter | November 13, 2007 02:06 PM
Judy Cameron gets my vote.
Hopefully she isn't a mother herself, because someone capable of doing this can only be a monster. And she even lokks like one!!!
Both sadists will get their share, that's for sure. But I hope they will get it soon.

My vote goes to the
"BAD JUDY."

Where are my pet headcrabs?...........

These despicable experiemts have been going on since the 1950's. The sick, infamous Harry Harlow started them. This has to STOP!!!
Posted by: Nadine Zimmer | November 13, 2007 08:31 PM
f everyone that works at that hell hole.research my ass! it's all about making money.why does it continue? somebody stop the madness.ashamed to be an american.special place in hell for these devils.i would like to place these creeps in cages and torture them.free the monkeys now!

Jacob Dikjstra, M.D. is like a respectable, truthful "breath of fresh air," and HIGHLY deserving of his title. An awesome post in itself that would be very worthy of being a "cut and paste."
Of course I agree with all who are against these unconscienable, brainless money-grubbing monsters - and can never vote for just one since evil is evil.
I believe that keith, kelly, Eric Malitz are on the right track. These monsters should be made known publicly, and charged with grand theft and fraud - and animal abuse BIG time!
We work at getting individual animal abusers charged and prosecuted, yet these monsters do it on a larger scale, get paid for it - and get away with it! Their titles and positions aren't worth a damn! They are sociopath$$$$ who use their so-called education to be monsters and thieves!
Hi, "Isabella," Freedom Fighter! : )
I particularly liked your last point about the "it" thing. Very "realistic" ending. (for lack of a better word)

Researchers at the primate center have successfully created primate embryonic stem cells, a significant breakthrough in efforts to develop human stem cell therapies, and the first time embryonic stem cells have been created anywhere in the world.

I don't get it, if animal cruelty is illegal in US , then why aren't these hell holes shut down and the freaky "researchers" arrested?--there is certainly enough evidence to put them in prison--would like to know the answer
Posted by: mary | November 15, 2007 09:09 AM
Lets' turn the tables on Spindel and Cameron; we could
put them in tiny, cramped, filthy cages and perform relevant experiments on them.
To determine if cigarettes could be harmful to us, let's
force-feed them each a carton. If they stopped torturing these frightened,
innocent primates TODAY!, there may be a chance that
someday their souls can be
redeemed-- along with all the
other hateful "experimentors." What
goes around, most definately
comes around. No one really
ever get's away with cruelty
to animals, who have no voice
to call out for help.

Last night I watched the documentary "I am an animal". There was so much sadness watching it but one thing that really stick's in my mind was the look on one of the monkey's face's. It had such a "what did I do" scared look and they proceeded to pretty much torture it, shoving a tube in it's nose. How any of those people can do what they do is disturbing. Are they so delusional that they can actually justify their action's? Common sense should tell anyone that before any medicine or procedure can be used on humans it needs to be tested on humans, bottom line, why torture the animal's? The extent that some people will go to for greed amazes me and also totally infuriates me. People like that who show such a lack of concern for people or animal's are pretty much useless, a waste of space in my opinion. If there were any fairness to this world anyone doing such a thing would experience the same treatment before they die so they could realize the pain and suffering they dealt out. That might sound harsh but what they do for no valid reason is unconscionable.

I want to help these primates so bad. I wish there was more I could do for them.
These sick losers like Eliot Spindel and Judy Cameron make me sick to my stomach. How do they sleep at night?

I am with Letitia-I am trying to research primate sanctuaries. It is my goal to have every primate used in research retired to sancutaries worldwide. Cancer experiments on mice can't reliably predict outcomes in rats. Animal data on drug side effects is notoriously unpredictive. There is no good animal model for predicting human birth defects. In vitro tests are more reliable than the archaic LD-50 and Draize animal tests. Stroke research on animals does not accurately model human stroke and finds worthless "cures" year after year. Addiction studies on animals are a fraud: none of the animals are naturally addicted or even attracted to the drugs that we crave. AIDS experiments on chimpanzees have been a complete failure and waste of money; they have set back progress in finding a cure. Psychological experiments on animals take money that could go to counseling services and clinical programs and use it to run animal torture chambers.
In the animal lab, we lose our souls but do not find cures.

As someone who does not support PETA for reasons like NY Strip Steak I am surprised to find myself moved by this article. I tend to not think about the suffering that animals endure for my benefit; the same way the animals in the wild don't give a crap what their prey is 'going through' but THIS, this is unacceptable. There is NO reason for this 'research' other than the selfish motivations of these scientists to keep themselves busy at their jobs. Whatever reasons these people have for torturing these animals and spending all that money can not be justified.

Why not wrap an MTV scarf around their neck Judy ??
Posted by: Sandie | December 5, 2007 09:36 PM
Brainless people must not be allowed to perform research, they will not get any results. Ever.
Animal research is only performed by people unable to think.
Posted by: Peter Loenson | December 6, 2007 10:02 AM
Thank You PETA for being there to stand up for these poor and defensless animals. I am ashamed to be a human when i see poor and innocent beings being ripped from their mothers for research THAT WAS DONE AND PROVEN YEARS AGO!! Thanks Yuo Captaiin Obvious-We Already know that smoking is bad when you are pregnant...Thank you you IDIOTIC no-do-gooders!! They are sadistic and are poor examples of Human Beings! Hope the two of them are Not parents. All i can say is that Thanks God Judy isn't my mother; because i would of Run away long before she could have lock me in a cage in her basement to see how "traumatized" i would be.
Posted by: Toby | January 21, 2008 05:11 PM
I hope someone gives both Judy and Eliot a taste of their own medicine. Whisk them away into a dark basement somewhere and torture them. Then kill them. They deserve nothing less. Filthy humans.
