I’ve worked here long enough to know that for every nasty, cruel thing you could imagine to do to defenseless animals, there are some nasty, cruel people out there doing it. This is the latest one to come across my desk. These disturbing images, which have been circulating within the animal rights community and received coverage in Britain’s Daily Telegraph, Sun, and Mirror today, show the hideous “sport” of horse fighting, from an organized event in China.

Horse_fighting_2.jpgHorse_fighting_3.jpg

One of the most disturbing things about these images for me is the crowd of sadists (and children who are too young to know any better) who look on and smile—as if they were at a football game rather than a ritual torture. PETA Asia Pacific is working to raise awareness about this hideous blood sport, and I’ll keep you posted on their success as they continue to fight the ludicrous notion that “tradition” can justify torture in this or any circumstance.

as an owner of 5 horses i would have never thought this imaginable. horses are so sweet natured. never in a million years would i have thought this was going on in the world!
absolutely dredfull..... i could never put any of the 20 horses in my stable through this. i dont understand how anyone could find this amusing!!!!
i know for a fact one simple kick at a horse can seriously damage them. full out fighting could only lead to an early death...

Just when I think there's nothing I haven't seen, I see something new. China has such a rich culture, such an ancient history - too bad they're so often in the news right now for lead paint on toys and cruelty to animals, such as dog and cat fur coats, roasted puppies and now, this, horse-fighting.
Unbelievable.

Oh No!! Has to be China!! Do they not have anything better to do with their time! They are suppose to be intelligent people, go build some cars for pete's sake!! They have NO compassion for animals!! HIDEOUS!!

Posted by: Carla | November 30, 2007 05:32 PM

I ask myself where China is ending! Almost every day they come out with a new horror! This country is completely degenerating! Where is the honor of Tai Chi Philosophy of the Holy Wudang Mountains and the teachings of Lao Tse, the Budddha and Kung Fu Tse? Shame on such a heartless stuuuuuuupid and criminal generation! you lost your face - poor fools - stop this new atrocity and try to get your brains back!!!

Posted by: Little Drummer Boy | November 30, 2007 05:33 PM

The Chinese, with all their culture and ancient civilization, are living proof that compassion can pass a nation by!

Posted by: Maureen | November 30, 2007 05:34 PM

You know what really pisses me off about this the most? It's the fact that this kind of crap is going to go on for GENERATIONS. It's this kind of stuff that has further entrenched my belief that the human race will NEVER change. There will ALWAYS be some retarded idiots on this planet who will force animals to fight each other. China has the worst animal / human rights record on the PLANET. If it were up to me I would just abruptly and permanently withdraw ALL commerce and manufacturing contracts with any nation that does not aggressively take action to stop these abuses. If said nation complains I just say, well, you had your chance you FUBAR'd it up so we're out of here.

Of course, there is always the fantasy that one could have these individuals bounty hunted. In the end only to be forced to fight to the death, be shot, beaten, electrocuted, skinned alive or boiled to death in a vat of scalding hot water; just like the poor animals that meet their fates like this EVERYDAY in China. Trust me, I go out of my way to not buy things made in China, however that has been very difficult since we have just about everything made there.

I will celebrate the day the human species finally pulls their collective heads out of their asses and puts an end to these atrocities to non-human species. The problem is, this isn't going to happen within my lifetime and then some.

No offense to any Chinese Americans out there but China has got to be one of the cruelest nations on earth. Not only is horse fighting barbaric and horrible but China is the biggest exporter of furs including dog and cat fur. Japan is another totally cruel country with their whale and dolphin murders. The USA is also cruel in some ways but at least we do have numerous animal rights and protection groups but there will still be sadistic, blood thirsty, cruel, nasty, humans no matter where they live.

Posted by: Rex's mom | November 30, 2007 05:43 PM

I don't expect any less from China. They don't respect HUMAN'S rights, much less animal's!

I am an animal lover and I am watching your Special on HBO at this time and would like to comment on another subject.
I refer to the Native American Indians, who in
Canada and other places (Western Washington) where there are whales and the Indians have been given permission to go on a hunt. I have heard the Indians say that they are going on a whale hunt and are wanting to go back to their old ways and days in killing the whales. Should we then... (The White people) should go back to our old ways and kill Indians the way we used to. It really is the same concept, don't you think? We all have plenty of food to eat other than whales who are in all likleyhood much more intelligent than many humans!!! Stop the madness!!!

People are so selfish and they all need to be shot and have us let those horses kick them in their faces to see how it feels. How sad:(

Posted by: Emily Anderson | November 30, 2007 08:53 PM

i read a statistic once that said studies show one out of every five humans have psychopathic tendencies. when you think that the country of china has billions of citizens then why does it surprise you that china is so sadistic and cruel to every living animal? evidence of such makes me sad to be part of the human species. we are but a vile and cruel lot.

O.K, what about the bull fighting in Spain and fox hunting in U.k? Some people commenting here are just stupid racists!
What about the human right?
Are these people are really animal right activists or just dumb racists?
I think I know the answer!
Some of the so-called animal right activists are real racists and that fact will make Jesus laugh at PETA!

Posted by: anti-racist | December 1, 2007 06:23 AM

Hwy, PETA!
Why don't you get rid of your racist animal-right activist members first before you do this kind of so-called animal right activism!
If any of you are starving for three days in a desert area, you would eat any meat of the animals to survive.

Posted by: anti-racist | December 1, 2007 06:30 AM

Hey, PETA!
Why don't you try to stop the racism in the world first before you do this so-called animal right activism movement?
Maybe, I have to organize the genuine PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of All races).
Is there any PETA member who wants to join my future NON-PROFIT ETHICAL organization?

Wow... go figure it would be the chinese. Do they have a soul?

Posted by: Maeghan | December 1, 2007 12:29 PM

here i'm back again for PETA and the animals! and particularly for the horses because they deserve a good part of my time! this new atrocity here shows once more the primitive attitude of uneducated or degenerated people! where has china's culture gone: the wudang philosophy, the immortal jade emperor of eternal tao - lao tse, bodhidharma and the holy buddhism and the ethical teachings of kung fu tse???? they have all gone!!! today's china is one of the worst animal-abusing countries in the world, also concerning human rights - free tibet !!! all this is too sad when we think that the mongol riders invaded even europe on their courageous little horses and i fear that also in that time they were not treated very well! i got a small horseshoe on my desk - a precious present of a friend who found it in a gravel pit!
so i think that all chinese and not just them should respect the horse as our closest friend and allied.

through all these centuries the horse served men in war and peace - it died and bleeded on the battlefields and did a hard job in the cole mines without seeing daylight again! in history we remember the famous names of 'bukephalos' the stallion of alexander the great who made him victorious in all the battles - or 'babieca' the mare of el cid campeador, spain's national hero - who rode into his last battle - dead, tied on his horse and the whole maurish army fled away because his horse and armour were shining in the morning light and they thought him still alive! then we got 'berrick', the famous horse of lancelot - who saved his master's life! also in literature the horse is wellknown! here i would like to mention theodor storm's saga 'the rider on the white horse' telling about a horse coming to a man out of the sea - and who went back there, together with him! there are also the famous horses of tolkien's 'lord of the rings': 'shadowfax' from the world after death and 'arod' which means 'earth'..... in germany there is a famous epic story of grimm brothers about 'fallada', the faithfull horse of a princess who was betrayed and killed together with her horse by her servant and they nailed the horse's head on the towngate - but the head was talking and telling the name of the murderer! and in hindu religion - there we got even a horse-headed divine avatar - hayagriva!!! so you see - we should be very respectful towards the horse - above all because it has also a great healing power, which i experienced several times in my life. specially the horse's backbone is sending some electrical waves and when you feel a pain in your arm you put your hand on the horse's neck and then move it slowly over his wave-shaped backbone - and the pain has gone! also breathing the air of galopping horses and you don't want to vomit anymore! and like this every animal has it's healing power but the stupid people are in complete ignorance of all their secrets and think that they are just good for to be abused in sadistic 'games' or for to be slaughtered and eaten! what a poor, ignorant viewpoint! so all i can repeat here is that animals deserve all our love and respect and then we shall know their miraculous secrets!

Posted by: UnderMySkinner | December 1, 2007 06:34 PM

I really think China has gone to Hell in a handbasket for the sake of the almighty yen. This country has no morals, judging by the way it treats its animals.

They enslave dogs and cats, turning them into fur and food, skinning or boiling them alive; they beat 50,000 dogs to death in the street last year because of a rabies scare; they use bear and tiger body parts in their Chinese herbs as "aphrodisiacs"; and now they've found a way to make money off of inflicting pain on horses to force them to fight each other. Such a primitive country and the animals suffer for their greed...

Posted by: Andi | December 1, 2007 09:32 PM

Well all i got to say is look where its comeing from "CHINA" those people are fucking sick in there lil heads they all need to die! or maybe we should skin them alive! i think i could watch that! if you want to stop this then stop all of them from comeing over here the can stay where they belong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazingly, nobody here is talking about it.

I wonder why.

Posted by: anti-racist | December 2, 2007 01:30 AM

I am absolutely ill over the horrible conditions which are happening in this day and age. Boiling an animal alive, watching it scream in pain and having it burned to death while it is still alive doesn't make sense. Skinning them by holding them down watching them crying out in pain while their skin is being ripped from their little bodies! Are these people totally insane? They must be, no human can do such horrible things to another living thing and be normal! Why don't we put a ban on this sadistic country and avoid all contact and purchasing until they put to death the criminals that are subjecting these defenseless animals to such a horrific death. I hope they meet the same fate in death as what they have done in life.

Posted by: Valerie | December 2, 2007 01:52 AM

wow this is just horrible. i mean just god.i am so scared wat will happen in the world next.and also we buy alot of stuff made in china and other places, but most of the stuff they sell they test it on animals so why should it be legal in america.1 anwser.....it shouldnt be legal at ALL!

Posted by: Colton Harmon | December 2, 2007 02:25 AM

While it is truly deplorable that people would take part in these activities, we must remember that horrifying atrocities are happening in our own backyard. As people who believe in equal rights for all creatures, I hope as a group we can rise above our ideas of Western Exceptionalism and understand that nations do not commit cruelty, corrupt individuals do.

Posted by: rawr | December 2, 2007 05:48 AM

What do you expect from a country who kills thousands of their own people every year and tortures dogs just before they skin them alive. Blame the U.S. Hell we are the biggest supporter of communism in the world. Stop all trade with the chinks and they wouldn't be thinking about torturing animals. They would go broke. To hell with China, the most evil country in the entire world.

I have never been able to understand the enjoyment people get out of torturing or killing any animal. My father took me to a circus when I was 5 years old (when circuses were even more cruel than they are now) and I started crying because I didn't like the way the animals were treated. I never went again and I never understood why people thought it was fun to see animals forced to do tricks for human entertainment.

Posted by: mary | December 2, 2007 01:59 PM

hi.the asians/orientals have some deep seated physchological problems.any race of people that has such a collective lack of compassion with other living species must have an inherent flaw that runs deep.when an animal shows fear, anxiety or distress or screams out when harmed GUESS WHAT? THAT MEANS IT HAS FEELINGS, AWARENESS AND CAN FEEL PAIN! if you dont acknowledge this then you are missing that vital component that makes us human - EMPATHY! any human that hurts animals for profit or fun has no place in a civilised society and should be dealt with accordingly - prefferably the death sentence. as for the comments from the so called anti racist - SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU IDIOT! ANIMALS ARE ALWAYS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HEAP - THATS WHY THEY GET ABUSED BY HUMANS! ALSO,IF YOU HAD ANY REAL CONCERNS ABOUT INJUSTICE AND UNFAIR DISCRIMINATION YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHERE ANIMAL RIGHT SUPPORTERS ARE COMING FROM.EVEN PEOPLES THAT HAVE BEEN VICTIMS OF RACIAL PERSECUTUION TREAT INNOCENT ANIMALS LIKE SHIT SO THINK DEEPLY BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR UNENLIGHTENED MOUTH.THANKS YOU AND GOODBYE!

Posted by: daniel | December 2, 2007 01:59 PM

i posted a message earlier but not sure if it got on so here goes again.1) this is what happens when the world looks the other way - abuse and cruelty flourish. the asians/orientals i,m sure will come up with other ingenious ways with which to abuse and torture innocent animals so expect more horrors from this sick race of people. i hate to generalize but every time they come up with another sick abuse the capacity to NOT generalize shrinks considerably - they are inherently cruel and abusive to animals on a genocidal scale.any traditional notions of honour, nobility and respect associated with the culture seem to have completely evaporated.we should all boycott anything to do with these cultures - fuck the global economy, those idiots rely on us for buiseness so dont but shit from them!2) the so-called anti racist that commented earlier - WHAT AN ARSEHOLE!READ THIS CAREFULLY YOU IDIOT, I,M ONLY GONNA SAY IT ONCE.ANTI RACISTS ARE WHAT THEY ARE BECAUSE THEY HAVE A DEEP DISDAIN FOR (OR SHOULD DO!) UNFAIR TREATMENT AND UNJUST DISCRIMINATION THAT RESULTS IN THE ABUSE OF RIGHTS OF A VULNERABLE OR INNOCENT PARTY.ANIMALS ARE THE INNOCENT PARTY AND ARE AT OUR MERCY AND HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO UNBELIEVABLE CRUELTY FROM US HUMANS,EVEN FROM PEOPLE WHO THEMSELVES HAVE BEEN ABUSED - ANIMALS ARE ALWAYS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HEAP, BEING ABUSED BY PEOPLE.IF YOU WERE REALLY A COMPASSIONATE PERSON YOU WOULDN,T HAVE POSTED SUCH CRAP IN THE FIRST PLACE - YOU WOULD HAVE AGREED! MAYBE YOU,RE THE ONE WHO,S RACIST - OR SHOULD I SAY SPECIEST (UNFAIR OR NEGATIVE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST OTHER SPECIES - WHICH HAS ITS ROOTS IN PREJUDICE). YOU REALLY NEED TO LOOK DEEP INTO YOURSELF AND CHECK YOUR PREMISES BECAUSE YOU NEED ALOT OF HELP.MAYBE GO LIVE IN CHINA? YOU,LD FIT IN WELL.HAVEN,T FINISHED YET BUT HAVE TO EAT SO WILL CONCLUDE AT A LATER DATE.

Posted by: daniel | December 2, 2007 03:20 PM

For those rascist folk out there who think one kind of event can represent a whole nation, I have only one thing to say. Keep your ignorant, self-righteous mouths shut! I am a Chinese American who is proud to have Chinese blood in my veins. I have spent half my life in Beijing, and I have seen many compassionate people who help animals. Old ladies who provide food and shelter for a lame, homeless cat, my neighbors who love their dogs like children, and shelters run by caring chinese folk. For those of you who think you can read one single news article and dismiss a whole nation as barbaric, I find you totally unworthy of intelligence. According to your logic, because America has dogfighting, it is a cruel, barbaric nation as a whole?

On horse-fighting, I must clarify that it mostly happens mostly in rural areas, where people are so poor they struggle to feed themselves and their families. Such cruel amusements such as horse-fighting are often one of the very few amusements they have. Ideas such as animal rights are foreign to them. I suppose few Americans would understand, for we have everything here and are quite spoiled. But I know, because I have seen such places. And I know that horse-fighting will not stop until they struggle above the poverty line.

It takes time, education and patience to end cruel practices, not curses, disparagement, or vulgar, ignorants insults. I have always supported PETA, and God knows I try to help. But those disgusting comments some people post on here undermine the efforts of all those CHINESE people in CHINA who actually don't waste time promoting rascism and actually get out to help animals.

Please stop branding the entire people of certain race or nationality as barbarians just because few people of that particular race or nationality are cruel to animals.

If you really love animals, you can love humans too, regardless of race and nationality.

Dear Anti-Racist:
HUH? What are you talking about? There's been plenty of commentary here about bullfighting and fox-hunting. In fact, anytime there's animal abuse reported, you'll find lots of commentary about it here on these blogs. What about human rights? And what have YOU done today to promote human rights? Quite often, people who rant about PETA not caring about human rights haven't exactly distinguished themselves in that area, so why don't YOU be the exception and go DO something about human rights, especially in China, rather than just pointing at us because we're about animal rights here? I care about both human and animal rights, as do a great many people here, and I also DO what I can to help, and hope to do a great deal more.

Let's not brand an entire nation because of barbaric behaviour by some of its population (just like Mike Vick is not representative of the entire U.S. population...). I know that China does not have a good reputation for protecting animal or human rights, but that does not mean that all Chinese people are animal abusers.

However, this IS horrible behaviour and the world does need to know that this is going on, so that it can be stopped, no matter what colour, race or country of origin the perpetrators belong to.

Anti-racist, you must be new to this site, so please take the time to read through the many, many pages devoted to protecting ALL animals. You will see that PETA takes a stand against people and organizations that use ANY animal for entertainment, including horse racing. This particular topic is about horse FIGHTING.

I saw a clip of horse fighting on some special on tv..when animals attack or something like that, on spike tv. The horses were bitting one another..while the chinese people cheered and laughed. It made me sick to watch this. How can anyone go to such an event and cheer this on? I don't understand how any human being can watch such torture and not feel any compassion for the animal. This is why I really dislike being in the human race sometimes.

Posted by: Tracy | December 3, 2007 04:01 PM

Sussanah,

When people fight for animal rights and when people are passionate about animal rights, they are also contributing to the human race.

When you can convert ONE individual to make a change for animals (stop wearing animal skins, stop eating animals, stop buying products that conduct animal experiments, or all of the above) you have helped someone become a better person and that is helping out the human race. The examples are endless, I can not note all of them down. SO STOP SAYING THAT WE DON'T CARE FOR HUMANS.

Now that I actively care for animals, I do more for people, then I did when I was a close minded meat eater. It took loving and caring for animals for me to open my mind and open my heart to a series of issues (not all of them are animal issues).

Just because we have time to write down a 3 minute comment on a blog regarding animals doesn't mean that we don't care about people. After all, we are humans ourselves.

When I read comments like "you animal rights people, what have you done for humans lately," I actually feel really bad for the person making the comments. I think of how I used to be and how I used to think a few years back, and that was sad.

Hi Susannah S,

What have I done to promote human right?

I have been posting many comments to many websites to stop racism in the world. I even sent some to several racist websites and got threatening e-mails from them.

I also participated in some anti-war demonstrations to stop unnecessary war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Long times ago, I sent letters to Chinese embassy to tell the Chinese government to stop human right abuse in China and they ignored me.

I am new to PETA because I was not really interested in animal right activism.

You are nothing but a stupid racist. Go to KKK websites.

I wonder how some individuals here claim to love animals while they still wish to fuck a nation's people. I dare you to come out here and fuck the billions of us. If you want to fuck people, I don't believe you're above fucking animals. If you want to fuck people, I don't believe you're truly compassionate. If you want to fuck people, you're just a bunch of disgusting wackos like those horse-fighting people. Except they don't mouth fake sympathy for one kind of animal, then suggest violence toward another.

SUZANNE WELTON:

Chinese are taking jobs from the US? It's not their fault they want to LIVE. It's not their fault they want to EAT, or SLEEP somewhere with a roof over their heads. It's not their fault they need to FEED their FAMILIES. It's not their fault they want a JOB to do those things. How about you give up YOUR OWN JOB for some poor unemployed person? Not so enthusiastic about that, are you? If you agree that animals need to EAT, have SHELTER, and LIVE, why don't you think humans(also a species of animals, may I point out)need to LIVE too??? Look at the other side, for God's sake! Be a true compassionate PETA supporter, not just another self-righteous prig. If you want to blame someone, blame those profit-mongering people who hire for disgustingly low wages that Chinese people must accept because they need to FEED THEIR FAMILIES.

As a horse owner for over 10 years, this sickens me unimaginalby. I once saw a fight between two stallions (this was NOT organized!) it involved one horse breaking away from it's handler and running down to the other side of the farm and jumping into the other stallions paddock over a 5' high fence. (note the studs were diliberatly placed at opposite ends of the farm so as not to allow them to be "egged on" by one another) I have never known such fear as I did that day wondering not only how we were going to get them apart without being seriously injured but what shape they would be in when we did. I cannot ever imagine going to GAWK at horses fighting even before this incident. The way horses will fight each other is a very cruel way to fight. Those hooves can carry up to 22, 000 lbs of force. Thank you, PETA, for bringing this out in the open and thank you for doing your best to stop it

PS after being examined by 3 very experienced horsepeople and a vet both horses were deemed fine except for a few superficial flesh wounds

If u guys are pro-animal AND pro human, THEN STOP BLAMING AN ENTIRE COUNTRY AND ITS PEOPLE just because there are animal fights(Just shows how far your arrogance goes). Why dont you blame ALL people for the same reason even though almost all arent involved.

Posted by: Caboose | December 4, 2007 06:35 AM

To the Chinese-American who is proud to be Chinese. You say you are a person who tries to help, yet you can call this horse fighting an "amusement"? Because these people live in poverty they are excused from being a part of the human race and are free to become monsters and horrifically abuse animals because it is their only source of "amusement"? Have you really thought about what you are saying? No person who cares about animals can condone this treatment as an acceptable "amusement" because have no other way to "amuse" themselves. You really need to reassess what you have said. Think about it.

Posted by: Kathryn S. Thomson | December 4, 2007 10:29 AM

I did a double-take on this story when I was scanning your PETA Blog. What in the world will they think up next? How awful and sick!

And to have all those children watching the "fight". This is so disturbing.

Posted by: Veronica S. | December 4, 2007 12:07 PM

Teresa said:
Ideas such as animal rights are foreign to them. and she said: I know that horse-fighting will not stop until they struggle above the poverty line.

She is right...

Personally I believe that everyone has some good in them i don't think that people who make horses fight to the death are bad people... they're doing what they were brought up to think was okay. Also how can you honestly justify classify Asians as heartless people thats just as wrong as hurting animals

Posted by: Amey | December 4, 2007 12:54 PM

I have been bombarded with the notion that animal abuse inexorably leads to human abuse. So, where does the hatred of an entire country with a billion people based on a photograph with maybe twenty folks, most of which are little kids, lead? You guys are really into hating other people. What deep issues are smoldering inside you that you are so hating? I don't think that this is something a cold beer and a ribeye will fix, unfortunately.

let us be clear here! there are always some disturbers who play the ignorant part and want to twist the things other way round! this is called paranoia! me - i clearly understood from above texts that many animal protectors are angry about animal abusers and this time they are chinese! but an animal rights fighter is against every animal abuser - never mind from where he is! if on the next page we are talking about bull fighting it's clear that the spaniards shall be the bad-ones - being fully conscient that millions of spaniards are animal protectors - after germany they are on the second place in europe! this doesn't mean that there is anyone racist here - i think this should be clear! people like teresa just want to put sand in our eyes! living in misery or being poor doesn't mean that i have to be a rascal! i said exactly the same thing when black people defended vick just because 150 years ago their grand grand fathers were slaves! the whole world was one time or still is in bondage! this doesn't mean to live a life of a rascal! this i repeat every day to my son: if your president or king is a rascal with much money, this doesn't mean that you have to imitate his lifestyle with empty pockets - then YOU shall be hanged! so here we clearly talk against animal abuse and on this blog some chinese people are the abusers and everybody knows exactly - as zanoni mentioned for us - that there are also great cultures and personalities in china as everywhere in this miserable world but there is an old sicilian proverb: povero si - sporco pichi? poor yes - but why dirty? and cocky shut your beak - still now i would like to see you fly and i shall repeat it again and again - you know the whole thing: ceterum censeo cartaginem esse delenda....

Teresa,
If you do not like the animal activists here, perhaps you need to go somewhere, where you and tiny balls Cockhead and Mar's should go.
But please do us a favor and leave, you are not wanted here as long as you continue your rant against us.
You along with those I mentioned and other anti animal activists do nothing but suck hind tit to Bush ,who has caused more animals to die in the last 7 and 1/2 years as any administration before his.
Ana, I have missed seeing your posts, so glad you are here again.
Hello to Animal Lover and Ariel, and everyone else who is pro-animals.
Ziona and the new folks who are here for the animals, You rule, it's wonderful to have you here.
Remember to call your Senator's and Reps. and ask them to please push HR.503 and S.311 through to end the horse slaughter for good.
In case some of you don't know about this, all 3 slaughter houses for horses in America have all been closed this year, thanks to all of the Animal Activists.
These Bill's will stop our horses from being sent to Mexico and Canada.
When they were closed the company who owns these slaughterhouses for horses named Velda snuck these s.houses in right under the noses of the people of Canada.
They are outraged.
We have now joined forces with Canada.
And as soon as 311 and 503 pass, God willing, we are off to Canada to help our new friends.
All slaughterhouses for all animals should be closed.
P.S., Thank you Jack

You lost me with your vulgar posts filled with "f's". Being poor is not synonymous with being cruel. Excusing their poverty and need for "entertainment" by goading horses into fighting and killing each other does not make for a good argument. China does not have any animal welfare laws, so yes, I blame China for contributing to the extraordinary violence that animals endure there. The government has not seen fit to write any law that would benefit animals an iota. The very few organizations that do exist to help animals have their hands tied because of the government as well. China also abuses human rights and does not give complete religious freedom so it is no surprize that animals suffer greatly there as well.

Posted by: Caboose | December 4, 2007 07:06 PM

Ana, being poor is not an excuse...I don't recall ever trying to justify horse-fighting with it. All I wanted to say is that because of their harsh environment and upbringing, it will be harder to bring them around to see the cruelty in what they do. Fucking them, killing them, or sending all of China to hell will not help anything. I speak out only against those who fling impulsively rascist comments around when we should be discussing how to end horse-fighting instead. I agree fully that China needs A LOT of improvement on animal rights. Again, it will take effort and time, not insults, to improve.

Judith, since America is so free, I have the right to speak out my thoughts wherever I want. But you seem intent on driving me and others who but wish to speak rationally away...I wonder why? Is another aspect of the issue so hard to hear? Must people be banished for speaking out? What happened to freedom of speech, I wonder? My posts were directed against those who speak with rascism and violence...not to you, unless you identify yourself as a rascist? I have no wish at all to fight with activists here who speak with disgust against the horse-fighters/spectators themselves, or express their views reasonably. As for being anti-activist, I wonder where that comes from. I have been active in PETA Asia Pacific for quite some time and am quite proud of the translations I did.

Please do not think all of these people are racist because of their comments. There are countries that have bad track records, like China and Greece, regarding animals. But I must say in general, Asia, with the exception of India, has a really poor record regarding animals. The USA also needs to get on the ball with regards to animals but laws do exist no matter how flimsy the protection for animals is. We all need to educate others!!!! I only wish that affluent Chinese living both in China and the USA would use their wealth to help animals and help those people that are helping these tortured creatures. Peace!

Posted by: Ana | December 5, 2007 01:25 PM

Animal lovers are not racists. We simply do not want people, from anywhere on this planet, to mistreat animals. It just so happens that in China there is a hell of a lot of very serious animal abuse. Only by accepting this as a fact, instead of making excuses for it, is there any real hope of change.

first, carla - thanks for your support, appreciated.
second, the so-called anti racist; i am not stupid ( i would have thought that my message demonstrated this), and i am not a racist - i myself am of mixed race parentage, i live in a multi ethnic community and most of my friends are from ethnic minority - oh yeah, and i work with kids from ALL ethnic backgrounds.so get your facts right.TRUST AN ANTI RACIST TO PAINT PEOPLE AS THE VICTIMS IN A SCENARIO WHERE HUMANS ARE THE PERPETRATORS OF EXTREME VIOLENCE AND INJUSTICE. YOU CAN DEMEAN AND TORTURE ANIMALS ALL YOU LIKE - BUT DARE YOU SPEAK UP AGAINST THE SACRED HUMAN BEING!! HUMAN SELF INTEREST TAKEN TO EXTREMES - PART OF THE REASON WHY ANIMALS HAVE ALWAYS SUFFERED AT OUR BLOODY HANDS.
the fact that these people are poor, or their culture different, or they require amusement, none of these excuses wash. and here,s why;EVERY HUMAN BEING IS CAPABLE OF MAKING THIER OWN DECISIONS, DECIDING WHAT IS RIGHT OR WRONG.WHEN YOU DECIDE IN FAVOUR OF SKINNING AN ANIMAL ALIVE - OR BOILING AN ANIMAL ALIVE,ETC THEN UNFORTUNATELY FOR YOU, YOU WILL BE JUDGED BY THESE ACTIONS. AND IF THIS HAPPENS CONSISTENTLY WITHIN THE SCOPE OF YOUR SOCIETY OTHER PEOPLES WILL FORMULATE THEIR OWN OPINION BASED ON WHAT THEY MOST COMMONLY SEE - LIKE IT OR NOT.IF THE ASIANS OR ORIENTALS DONT WANT TO BE SEEN IN THIS BAD LIGHT THEN DO SOMETING ABOUT YOUR TREATMENT OF ANIMALS AND SORT IT OUT - DONT BLAME ANIMAL SUPPORTERS FOR THE NEGATIVE OPINION THEY MAY HAVE.
RIGHT, I,M OUT OF HERE FOR NOW - WILL BE BACK SOON.

When I was a child there was a boy who came fishing in our pond who used large tadpoles for bate. I thought this was awful, but the boy told me that his father taught him to use the tadpoles for bate because he could catch the biggest fish and they would have a nice supper. The boy never thought about the life of the tadpole,or the fish, he only thought about the big fish he would bring home and how proud his father would be, and the nice dinner they would all have. I think its that way with people who live in country's where animals are used and abused for human use, and even for amusement. They have been told for generations that what they do is normal and excepted. The problem is how to teach these people that each life is precious. When I told the boy that the tadpole was in pain on his hook, it didnt seem to bother him, because his father had told him it was ok. Reprimanding him didnt change his feelings about what he was doing, it only made him mad with me. So how do you teach people to stop believing what they believe. I think you plant seeds and hope they will grow. Like in the bible, the mustard seed, the smallest seed of them all grows slowly, and yet grows into the largest tree. So lets all plant seeds of knowledge, and information with kindness, and watch them grow. There is no quick fix.

rojo, the post is mine. I don't deny it. I was very angry, though I did not mean to fling it in everyone's face. It was intended for some of the earlier posts that really offended me. To everyone else who expresses their anger reasonably and not against my whole race, I apologize.

daniel: As one of the "asians or orientals" that you have so casually and contemptuously encompassed in your generalization, I must say you do us injustice. We are neither a "sick race of people" nor "inherently cruel". Before pointing your finger and telling us to do something about it, realize that many chinese people are, and have been, trying to do something for a long time. Shelters are run and people are fighting against cruelty. Their efforts have contributed greatly to the wildlife laws that China does have. Laws for domesticated animals has been proposed again and again, though they have not been approved. Remember that China is a developing nation still experimenting and struggling to form a good system. Animal Rights is a relatively new issue, and has not attracted as much attention. I assure you that there is no lack of effort from the animal lovers in China. Do not criticize what you have no clue about.

It is surprising that you are saying you are not a racist.

Are you telling me that the cruelty to animals are only happening in China or Asian countries?

You said, "IF THIS HAPPENS CONSISTENTLY WITHIN THE SCOPE OF YOUR SOCIETY OTHER PEOPLES WILL FORMULATE THEIR OWN OPINION BASED ON WHAT THEY MOST COMMONLY SEE - LIKE IT OR NOT."

According to your stupid logic, all the people of every country in the world have to be called barbarians because the cruelty to animals is really happening now in every country on this planet. This means you also have to call yourself barbarian.

To Alex Hanson

You said, "I simply hate China. The greatness of a nation can be told by the way it treats its animals".

Posted by: anti-racist | December 7, 2007 08:49 AM

teresa; here i go again - was in a bit of a rush with my earlier reply to you so i,m just gonna try to clarify on what i base my opinions - my earlier comment to you still stands and i take on board what you said.
one of the concerns i have with the abuse of animals in asia and the orient is that whenever i view any video footage in which animals are being slaughtered in markets or crushed together in crates and transported across towns and cities (sometimes in traffic jams),not one member of the general public seems in the least bit concerned as to whats happening to these creatures. why is this? i,ve seen footage of hundreds of pelts from freshly skinned dogs, cats, and racoons lying on the floor and the citizens just amble by - seemingly completely unaffected by this.again, why is this? what about the market for endangered species bodyparts and bones that the orientals create a huge demand for, as they are believed to have aphrodisiac qualities? i only found out the other day that when the canadian seal hunters (m*****f****rs!) kill and skin baby seals they can get double money for males because the asians want the seal penises, as they are believed to have aphrodisiac qualities.whales, probably one of the most gentle and iconic creatures on this planet, are given no respite to the persecution and cruelty they endure - but the japanese,to this day,do all they can to push this creature to the outer limits of existence.
there never seems to be ANY good news, regarding animals treatment, coming from these nations and thats why alot of people feel the way they do about these nations.
personally, if my country had such a poor record on animal abuse i would not defend it - i,m not particularly patriotic anyway as i realize that the vast majority of people, regardless of where they originate from, just view creatures as "other things" at their disposal and, unfortunately, the asian and oriental nations do have a particularlybad track record on this.
i,m not rebuking you teresa - not that i could! - i,m just giving you some insight as to the reasons why people might have the opinions they do.
again, i take on board what you said earlier and thank you for it. let me know what you think if poss.

I just want to say that horses like these, fish, mammels, people, and other living things do this daily so what is the point of making a case out of natural thing? You watch football because you like the action. But really what is the difference? Sure your going to say (there animals they dont know any better)but they do all the people do is put the two togther and they fight half the time they dont teach them to go after each other just let nature take its course. I can put money down for a boxing match and thats fine but if I put money down for two fish to fight I am a horrible person(I dont do it I love my animals) but they are the ones that want to fight, if they didnt they wouldnt do it right? Two bettas can not be in the same tank because they will kill each other, no one is making them do that right? It is in all males to fight thats why we have boxing, sword fights, wars, football, hockey ...etc. Its all about the male hormones we all have it and when we want to *ahem* mate we get aggravated and start to fight.Twenty-six men die each year because of mating rights its how we are. Animals and humans alike are horny things that can not keep it in check. I love animals , I have a few mostly fish but, I would never put them in harms way. I know for a fact which fish to add in to the tank and when it is mating season. I dont like fighting I just hate seeing that one type of fighting (human fighting) is allowed but not another. Peta is a one sided company only looking at humans as the blame and not seeing or saying that alot of the animals do it for a living. Another thing that got on my nerve is the meat thing. Animals can kill and eat meat but not me? Hell no to you I am my own person and I do what I want Peta needs to learn to leave people alone. If I killed a buffalo I will eat it and where the fur. Not to show off but for warmth. It isnt bad to kill animals to eat it, its that jerks that kill in mass for greed . I do have to thank you for reading this if you did.

I understand your point; using the race card has gotten really old. Yes, some cultures, nations, even faiths, have a BAD record when it comes to cruel behavior towards animals. China and Greece come to mind. Animals suffer great abuse and cruelty daily every moment and, like you, my heart goes out to them and I continue to fight the good fight!!!

I am a kinda loseing respect for PETA cause you guys made a huge deal out of the Michael Vick thing but when it come to stuff like this I don't see you guys doing nothing. This has been happening for a long time and now you guys want to say something.. They even eat animals over there and still nothing. Why don't you take your eyes off of Celebs and look at the real issues..

To daniel

1)there is only "logic" or "illogic" - "stupid logic" does not exist.

It exists when you do not know that your logic is faulty.
By the way, it is "logic" or "illogicality".

2)hypocrisy resides within us all - the trick is to keep it to a minimum, which i think i do very well.

I do not think you are good at that when I read your comments. It is obvious.

3)what about fools that dont believe i,m not a racist - like you?

Anyone who does not believe you are not a racist is a smart one, not a foolish one like you.

4)yes, there is animal abuse in all countries but, as i mentioned earlier but you decided to conveniently ignore, the cultures i mentioned DO have a particularly, if not the worst, track record as regards to this.trying to avoid this fact demonstrates severe denial and lack of understanding on your part.

The cultures? You mean only Asians have cultures of cruelty to animals?
Bullfighting, fox hunting, dear head mount, horse racing, circus, testing on animals, fur farming.....
How many of these originated from Asia?

5)did you know that some people who promote themselves as anti racists are some of the worst racists around? yeah, its true! you can usually tell because they over zealously promote their cause and jump at the chance to ram it down peoples throat in order to cover up their own racist short comings.boy,oh boy, a strange world with strange people!

No, I do not know that simply because that kind of people do not exist.

I have seen some of the worst racists.

Only few of them actually admitted that they were racists and most of them pretended that they were not racists and tried to justify their racism with any excuse they could find like you did.

If you were really not a racist, you would not have posted such hateful comments about me and Asians.

6)GUESS WHAT? as i was writing this message in the internet cafe an asian woman came in offering me cheap dvds - you,ll be glad to know that i politely smiled at her and declined her offer respectfully.
right, i think thats it for now - i really enjoy our little conversations - stimulating.
daniel.

Good! Keep doing that. If you talk with more Asians, you will realize that they are also human beings just like you and me.

Canadian seal hunting is not caused by the Japanese people. Seals are killed mainly for their pelts and Norway is the biggest customer for seal pelts. Again, you try to find any excuse to justify your racism and it is extremely flimsy.
You can become an anti-racist like me. Then you can genuinley stand for the welfare of animals in every country of the world.
Cats, dogs and other animals do not care about the race and nationality of their owners.

I do not think this is case of ignorance due to poverty, race, culture, or whatever else. This is typically cruel and aggressive male behaviour.

This is such a cruel and inhuman thing to do to an animal. I grew up with a horse her name was "Baby." I could get on her in the middle of the field with no saddle or bridal and she would walk me home. Baby was very special to all of us. My grandfather got her when I was about 2 yrs. old. We have so many pictures of the grandkids on her. Baby finally got too old. She could hardly stand up. We didn't want someone to just come pick her up and take her away and kill her. So we got a vet to come to the house and put her down. WE all cried. But now she is buried in that field she always walked me through. How can someone do this to a beautiful animal God created? Let's stop this now!!!

the chinese people are crazy!!!!! (Sombudu) we hate them (hur fan kan man göra så mot animals???)

Posted by: usch | February 6, 2008 04:13 PM

This is barbaric ....nonetheless..how about the mixed martial arts , ultimate fighting....hmmm what seems to be the problem here?

Posted by: vip | March 11, 2008 11:24 AM

I would think people from other nations would think the U.S. is barbaric. A capitalist nation that makes millions of dollars yet still has homelesness, factory farms, cruelty in circuses, and animal testing for yet ANOTHER hair product. Way to go, hypocrites.

I think that horse fighting is terrible! Those animals could get hurt!
