I have a feeling that a lot of people would have been pretty surprised if they'd seen Michael Vick walking into PETA's offices recently—not once but three times. You'd think that would be the very last place on Earth he would consider spending time. But it happened, and here's how it came about: After Vick pleaded guilty to dogfighting charges, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk—a great believer in hammering away at the seemingly impossible—contacted him to ask him to hear about animals’ feelings, needs, and desires, and to hear firsthand why people are so outraged by the suffering of the dogs fought and killed in Bad Newz Kennels dogfighting pits. Vick confirmed our belief that he had never before been exposed to this kind of information, and, after a formal preliminary meeting at PETA HQ—during which we reiterated that we're still seeking a strong jail sentence and a lifetime ban on contact with animals—he left with study materials. He returned on September 18 to take an 8-hour course in empathy and animal protection. No cell phones allowed, no going out for lunch, just learning.

The full course that Vick took, which includes homework, workshop outlines, videos, and supplemental course materials, as well as the exam questions Michael Vick returned to answer under his tutor’s watchful eye, is available here. The class included scientific evidence that animals are thinking, feeling beings, capable of a range of behavior and emotions; presentations on the specific needs of dogs; and information about the well-documented link between acts of violence against animals and crimes against humans, which PETA shares with law enforcement officers every week.

I know people can see red when it comes to any mention of Vick, so I do want to be extremely clear about our position here: While we’re pleased to have been able to show Vick facts about animals—many things he’d certainly never heard before in his life—we are in no way going to bat for him. He may have passed our empathy course, but we have asked the judge to send him to jail and bar him from ever possessing or having contact with animals. We believe anyone who might consider abusing animals should see exactly how much a known animal abuser stands to lose.

We've also sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell urging him to make our “Developing Empathy for Animals” course a requirement for all NFL players. To help persuade Goodell to make humane education a part of the NFL's basic training for players, please click here.

I have to admit, I'm a bit skeptical. Vick hasn't been sentenced yet...how do we know he isn't just doing this so that he can present it to a sentencing judge later? Sentencing isn't just a matter of showing up and having it handed down; there is a hearing where both sides present their reasons for a lighter or heavier sentence. His side could easily present Vick's having attended PETA's "Empathy for Animals" course as a factor in a possible lighter sentence.

I hope for your sake, PETA, that Vick was sincere in wanting to learn, and that you didn't just get played.

"We've also sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell urging him to make our “Developing Empathy for Animals” course a requirement for all NFL players."

Isn't this stereotyping? You seem to be saying that all potential NFL football players are in need of animal empathy training?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2007 04:01 PM

I am really surprised he did that. It's always possible that when someone does something like this that it's merely for image's sake, but most wouldn't. Not to the people who have been hounding him. Not an empathy course. They'd give some money to a shelter and leave it at that.

It appears that Vick may have actually listened, and that's really cool.

However, I totally agree about punishment. Being sorry and owning up to your guilt can get you some leniency under the law, but it doesn't excuse you from the crime.

I AM TRULY SHOCKED AT PETA.
Once a monster always a monster.
He is just using you.
I can not believe this.
Next thing you know, you will be flashing his picture, as the new face of PETA.
The public is not going to
embrace this what so ever.
I would really think twice.
Just my opinion.
But I shall always support PETA.

If Vick is really sorry, he'll agree that it's important to make an example out of him so others are discouraged from imitating his mistake. When it's time for his sentencing, I'm sure he'll ask for the max. If he doesn't, that's all the more reason to give it to him.

Posted by: Bill | October 2, 2007 05:10 PM

I'm quite glad to hear this news. I stopped commenting on Vick quite a while ago because I couldn't stand talking about him. Just recently I realized that I don't want his life to be ruined, I want him to heal. I cried when I thought of how different a person I would be if my mother hadn't taught me to love animals. It's wonderful that he's learning how to respect other living beings, something he's never felt a need to do before. Even if he isn't ever allowed near an animal again, he will understand why what he did was wrong and perhaps he will teach those around him to care more about the living creatures than their own entertainment. We've all done horrible, selfish things in our lives, and we'll keep making mistakes until we die. I don't condone what Vick did, I spent many hours practically foaming at the mouth about it, but I'm well on my way to forgiving him. Just like the pitbulls that have had their lives altered by dogfighting, everyone (Including Vick) deserves a chance to change and prove that they don't have to be violent and cruel. My heart and soul are already settled on the matter, and I do hope that when he's serving time he'll be searching inside himself for ways to change.

NFL to have an empathy for animals course?

Peta, you guys are truly batshit crazy.

Posted by: Jack Mott | October 2, 2007 05:19 PM

Well... I hope this gets as much publicity as his demented acts did a few months ago.

The idea is for others to get PETA's message.

Hope its not yet another way to evade responsibility.

Posted by: Gabrielle | October 2, 2007 05:49 PM

Vick did seem truly baffled at the outrage surrounding his actions. He had that "deer the headlights look" on his face every time he was in public. Perhaps he has never really been exposed to this information before. He still needs to spend time in prison, but perhaps he has begun to think. My favorite quote is still "It is impossible to reach out to effectively help others without having experienced a revolution within." Perhaps Vick is feeling the tiny stirrings of a personal revolution.

I read where all but one of his dogs can be helped...And a judge I beleive will make this decison.BUT I think Micheal Vicks should foot the bill, he made the problem NOW put his money where his mouth is.. and Pay to have these dogs taken care of and given good homes!! I know how funding can be hard to find.

Posted by: Jenifex | October 2, 2007 06:05 PM

Even if vick is doing this to help his cauase (NO DOUBT) he will learn something and it's the best way to help other individuals whose sociopathic behavior hurts our lovely animals to get the message that this outragous cruely is unacceptable. Vick, I hope you really do learn something.

Of course he is working for a lighter sentence. But that doesn't mean this is a bad thing - it's great! And surprising - congratulations to Ingrid for pulling this off.

But after Vick has paid his dues, I think he is entitled to re-enter society, even professional football, as a reformed man. I can't imagine that he would go back to dog-fighting. The world will certainly be watching.

When you get caught speeding, you pay the fine and move on with your life. If you are an alcoholic, or drug-addict, or psychotic, we forgive your transgressions if you make the effort to reform.

Mistakes were made, a terrible mindset took over his life, but it is possible for Michael Vick to move forward with a productive and meaningful life. We should give him that chance.

Posted by: The Good Steve | October 2, 2007 06:27 PM

I'm happy that Vick seems to have been showing real interest in just learning. And I think it would be neat if and "Empathy Course" was available or required for NFL training. I think, that even if the potential NFL Player in training isn't interested in Animal Abuse, it's still good to be educated. I mean, I found out about a lot of stuff that was considered animal abuse that I didn't know was animal abuse when I first found PETA.
And then, if these said potential NFL players in training were touched and decided to change how they lived over the required Empathy courses...well...what a great model for America's children. Someone willing to stand up for what they believe in and do what they feel is right--and still managing to be famous...cool.

I am surprised that PETA has allowed this killer to get somthing positive for his side before he is sentenced. Do you really think he cares about animals? If anything at all,PETA,should be more interested in keeping people like this away from animals all together

Posted by: mars1 | October 2, 2007 06:40 PM

You people are the ones that are curel to animals. People are Human beings. They take care of themselves; they help make the world work; what does a dog do? You take a young man's lively hood away from him. Destroy his life; his caree; for dogs who attack and kill people; other animals; babies; old people. Can't you understand they are animals. Vick didn't have to do anything to that breed of dog. They should not have been let lose in the US or anyother place. The dogs are killers. I bet you want be caught in the room along with any pit bull. PETA is a big white lie. America is not a dictatorship. To me you are a bunch of commist. You can't force people to go along with you. I'm a vegaterian, by choice. You my dears will get yours come judgement day. God hates a lier. I know this want get printed. But atleast you will read it and know that God is watching you. Now sleep on that!

Peta had really out done itself. Just when I think that the organization's accomplishments couldn't get any cooler, the impossible seems to happen.

Posted by: Lindsay | October 2, 2007 06:48 PM

Dear Anonymous:

I don't believe that PETA is stereotyping when they ask the NFL to have players participate in animal empathy training.

I think PETA is considering the track record of some NFL players as there have been repeated instances of animal abuse by NFL players in the past. In December, six pit bulls belonging to the Chicago Bears' Tank Johnson were said to have been the subject of public and official concern in Illinois. Leshon Johnson, who played running back for three NFL teams, faced felony charges with 21 others in 2004 stemming from their alleged involvement in a massive dogfighting ring. Former Eagles' safety Damon Moore was accused in 2001 of abandoning his puppy in a soccer field in New Jersey, and former Eagles’ running back Thomas Hamner was twice convicted of beating his dog. And the list goes on....

So, I think PETA is on the cutting edge of making a big difference when it comes to how some NFL players view animals.

Great work PETA!

Posted by: V. Soto | October 2, 2007 07:20 PM

I like the idea of empathy courses, but it bothers me that we are asking for it to be a requirement for NFL players. Why would they need it more than anyone else?? I agree with Anonymous that it seems stereotypical.

I'm glad that Vick seems to be trying, but honestly, it's sad that he has to take a class to understand that animals are thinking, feeling beings. Shouldn't he have been able to look into his dogs' eyes and understand the same thing?

Posted by: Kenna | October 2, 2007 08:13 PM

"Yea!" for PETA and Mr. Vick. It may only be baby steps but it's something. Now if only Vick would agree to do an ad for PETA opposing dog fighting...that would demonstrate he has gained some understanding but never gonna happen.

State Police on Friday raided the home of a Broussard man dubbed by the Humane Society as the "don of dog fighting," seizing 64 pit bulls and arresting the man and his son on charges of dogfighting, animal cruelty and drug charges - for steroids allegedly used to inject the dogs.

Floyd J. Boudreaux, 70, whose pit bulls are known worldwide and reportedly sell for thousands of dollars, and his son, Guy Boudreaux, 40, were booked in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center after an early morning raid at their home on La. 89.

"Today marks the day the 'don of dogfighting' has come down. This man is legendary in the dog fighting world," said John Goodwin, deputy manager for animal fighting issues with the Humane Society's national office. "... This man has been on our radar a long time."

The arrests come after a three-month investigation that initially focused on illegal betting at dog fights, said State Police spokesman Willie Williams.

On Friday morning, animal welfare workers were documenting the animals and placing them into metal cages to be carried to an undisclosed location.

The animals - most found in healthy condition - will probably be euthanized, said Laura Maloney, director of the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The New Orleans-based nonprofit was helping in the dog removal.

Maloney said the dogs could be too dangerous to place in homes.

"These dogs are bred specifically for aggression," she said.

The dogs were on heavy chains in a large fenced lot next to Broussard's home.

Maloney said investigators also found dog fighting "paraphernalia" in the home, including dogfighting magazines, videos of fights and treadmills she said were used in training to help build strength in the animals.

Floyd Broussard lived in a wood-frame house on the property; his son lived in a trailer behind the house, according to police. The family has lived on the property for more than 25 years, neighbors said.

Williams said the father and son are accused of breeding, raising, training and selling dogs for the purpose of dog fighting, which is illegal in all 50 states.

Shane Vincent, who was raised next door and whose parents still live there, said he used to go to "dog pulls" with Guy Boudreaux -contests of dog strength - and knew that Floyd Boudreaux was "famous" for one of the pit bull bloodlines he developed.

But Vincent was surprised to hear about the arrests.

"I never knew him to fight any dogs," Vincent said.

Byron Girouard lives on Rue D'Or, down the street from the Boudreaux home.

"I've known them since I was 5 years old, and I've never heard them talk about fighting dogs," he said. "... Their daughter is my best friend. It's crazy. I heard they had the FBI in there."

Girouard said that the Boudreaux family is well-known in the area and "treated me like a son. If I needed help with anything, they're the ones I know would help."

A search on the Internet turns up several references to Floyd Boudreaux and his pit bulls, including references to him on the Web site for the American Dog Breeders Association.

According to information from the Humane Society, he is known for the "Eli" bloodline of dogs, considered a top choice for dog fighters.

The lineage dates back more than 50 years and Boudreaux's dogs sometimes fetch more than $10,000, according to the Humane Society.

"This man's dogs are sold internationally," Goodwin said.

An Internet Web site that lists contact information for Floyd and Guy Boudreaux offers "Eli" dogs and states that "owning a Boudreaux dog is like owning a piece of history."

The Web site includes a disclaimer that, "No dogs intended or sold for any illegal purposes."

Floyd and Guy Boudreaux each face 64 counts of animal cruelty, 64 counts of dog fighting and one count of possession of steroids.

Williams said Floyd Boudreaux also faces a firearms charge for a sawed-off shotgun allegedly found in his home.

The father and son could face up to 10 years per count on the dog fighting and cruelty charges.

They were being held in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on $101,500 bond each.

Case Updates
Floyd Boudreaux has been charged with 48 counts of dog-fighting, and two counts of possession of schedule three drugs. His son, Guy, has been charged as principal to 48 counts of dog-fighting.

After several continuances in the case, a new trial date for both men has been set for January 14th, 2008.

The district attorney's office in Lafayette has filed charges against a father and son arrested nearly a year ago in a dog-fighting raid.
Internationally known pit-pull breeder Floyd Boudreaux and his son guy are charged with 48 counts of dog-fighting and possession of steroids. Investigators say the dogs were injected with the drugs to make them stronger.

59 Pit Bulls were confiscated in a raid of the Boudreaux home in Youngsville last March of 2005. 57 of the dogs were put to sleep.

Charges have been filed in a high-profile dog-fighting case against two Acadiana men. Floyd Boudreaux and his son, Guy were arrested in March of 2005. Now, the father and son have been charged with 48 counts of dog-fighting.

They've also been charged with one count of possession of testosterone and one count of ketamine, both of which are Schedule III narcotics. Cruelty to animals charges are still on hold. Almost 70 pit bulls, some of them puppies, were seized from the Boudreaux's property and were later euthanized.

The head of the Louisiana SPCA says all 56 grown pit bulls seized during a raid near Lafayette last week have been euthanized, including a fighter reportedly worth at least 25-thousand dollars.

A dogfighting expert with the SPCA said all of the dogs were worth about 250-thousand dollars.

Authorities said the dogs were taken from the home of 70-year-old Floyd Boudreaux, who has marketed the dogs to buyers throughout the United States as well as Mexico, Japan and other countries.

State police booked Boudreaux, and his son, 40-year-old Guy Boudreaux, with dogfighting, animal cruelty, possession of a sawed-off shotgun and illegal possession of anabolic steroids, a schedule III narcotic.

Under Louisiana law, criminal violations associated with dogfighting carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison. Authorities also seized four puppies that had not reached fighting age.

Truthfully, I am very surprised that Vick did this. I am not sure what to think about this and I dont know if it wasn't for PR. I wonder if Vick will ever even comprehend the harm and torture he has bestowed to mans best friend. He sickens me and to even allow him to go near an animal is a great risk, at this point. They say everyone is salvageable, but in this case, I am not truly sure. It's great that he passed the empathy course, but would he have even cared had he not been caught brutalizing dogs to begin with? I question his sincerity and his lack of remorse. The guy couldn 't even write his own apology note. I'm shocked he didn't send someone in his place to take this course.

Posted by: Christina Hebert | October 2, 2007 09:41 PM

I'm not sure if Jack will let me put a plug in, but if you're eyes are going rectangular from staring at the monitor too long, you can rest them by downloading some exceptional animal rights and veg-related podcasts from animalvoices.ca. To be fair, there are other equally excellent podcasters out there, but this one broadcasts from my hometown.

Posted by: Mike Quinoa | October 2, 2007 09:47 PM

I think this the way to change things, accountability WITH education. If he's taking the course for the right reasons, he might really learn something and also maybe others will see that he is open to change and also be open to seeing these issues in a new way- you never know. Of course he must be held accountable too, but maybe this can be seen as a good sign.

Michael Vick's participation in your progam should NOT buy him any leniency from the law and it's punishment. I hope that he becomes a major (court ordered) supporter of your program and a small part of his punishment.

You will get no more donations from me.
You must be getting something out of this deal to have come up with this hair brain scheme with Vick.
I will give my money to the Humane Society from now on.
I am sorry I ever defended you.

Posted by: Ritzy | October 2, 2007 10:20 PM

His sudden urge to contact PETA is an obvious tactic to try and clear his name. He would still be involved in dog fighting today had he not been caught. I do not and will not ever believe he is truly sorry for the pain and suffering he causes those animals. He knew what he was doing was wrong, and now it is time for him to take responsibility for it. Some time spent locked up in a cage(like his dogs) should change his perspective on life and the blessings he once had.

I hope he took it seriously, but I always say, plant the seed.

Posted by: Lisa | October 2, 2007 10:35 PM

THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!!
PETA should allow that sorry piece of shit to get involved in this program AFTER he serves his sentence!!!!
Hello PETA...He is using you to get you on your side to fight for him to get a lighter sentence!!!
That motherfucker is a monster!!!
Any normal human being would put a stop to dogfighting on his property after watching a single fight but that dirty fucker embraced it for 5 years that we know of...
He cannot convince me that he is sorry for what he did...HE'S ONLY SORRY THAT HE GOT CAUGHT!!!
BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!
I am officially disappointed in PETA because that cunt is manipulating the shit out of everyone!!!

I'm over PETA.....sometimes you have to not think of the publicity..and actually think of what was done to the animals.

Posted by: Linz | October 2, 2007 10:42 PM

felecia, regardless of vick's motives he is learning different views. Whether it rubs off is known only to him, but he has been presented with those views voluntarily.
surely having to spend 8hrs bombarded by peta tutors will count towards some of the punishment. No lunch break, cruel, cruel ...

RE: Vick
You've got to be kidding me! There aren't any words to convey how upset I am that you would give any time to this man. To say he's taking classes is absurd. He's beyond cruel - he's beyond redemption. I am rethinking PETA now.

Posted by: Margaret Ozbun | October 2, 2007 11:46 PM

Michael Vick coming to PETA headquarters shows how desperate he is to stay out of jail, and it shows how hard PETA fights to try to change the ways of animal abusers. PETA should not be ridiculed for this. I myself have moved from a big city Ft. Lauderdale, FL to a little town Newton, NC and can see the way people here treat animals so different, eat meat each and every day, tie their dogs to houses, but still I will try just as PETA to give them some knowledge to treat animals with kindness. As far as race, it is not racist, as where I live now, most dogs are chained by white americans. Animal abusers do not come in colors, they are all colors. As far as Vick, we as activists can never stop trying to change the ways of an abuser. We as activists can never stop trying to teach people about the cruelty of factory farming and food animals. So I understand. But I know for Vick it is pure desperation to stay out of prision. And no matter how desperate Vick is, he will never ever be as desperate as the dogs he killed, tortured and fought.

Posted by: Cyndi | October 2, 2007 11:59 PM

At least, a so called "baby step" is better than doing nothing.

It's not easy to forgive, and not easy to forget. At least Vick stepped out, started facing the consequence, and tried to do what he can do.

I appreciated Vick's second chance from PETA; and I do, really hope Vick can keep learning, and be a better person.

Posted by: Jen | October 3, 2007 12:02 AM

P.S.
To those who blame PETA for what Michael Vick is going through please remember one thing, Michael Vick was the one who did the crime. Not PETA.

Posted by: Cyndi | October 3, 2007 12:03 AM

I do agree, he's thinking of himself as he has always done.

He can ask about animals AFTER he receives his sentence.

He doesn't give a &%#@!# S ASS about animals.

This is so vick-sick

IT'S ALL ABOUT HIMSELF AND HIS ATTEMPTS TO NOT FACE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS ACTIONS!!

Have him take the classes behind bars for some 6 years!

Posted by: yeahright | October 3, 2007 01:02 AM

Publicity stunt. An exceptionally lame attempt to receive a lighter sentence. I hope it doesn't work ... Like the others, I also hope that he was not allowed near any animals whilst attending this course. This guy is a sociopath and is NOT redeemable. He'll say and do anything to save his a*&. As far as I'm concerned, he ran out of second chances a long time ago. The only news I want to hear about Michael Vick is that he is going to prison for a very long time. Other than that ... he can go to hell.

Posted by: VestaGirl | October 3, 2007 02:13 AM

michael vick should be NEUTERED before or after he goes to jail.
his sorry claim can not be true, it is just an act.
for someone who has abused dogs for almost 7 yrs, he is not going to feel sorry for anything just becuase he is caught and has to go to jail.

Posted by: ann | October 3, 2007 04:11 AM

I can't believe that PETA would even consider talking with this scum bag. Don't they know that he's doing this to look better? You are ruining any good reputation you did have. If he doesn't get the sentence he deserves, I will partly blame PETA!!

Posted by: Laura | October 3, 2007 06:57 AM

I have a golden retriever and a lab and I can understand why so many are outraged by Vick's behavior. But having been a product of inner city, these facts about dogfighting and any other animal info are not prevalent in our neighborhoods. I truly feel that had Vick known the damage and the facts that he is trying to garner now that we would not even be going through this with him. PETA needs to petition someone to get more PSA on dogfighting on air and in schools to children at an early age. And it really concerns me when people don't believe in forgiveness. Your organization euthanizes animals as well. And lets not forget horse racing, dog racing and other activities that seem to be okay. Animal abuse is animal abuse.

If Vick is making an effort, why not give him the benefit of the doubt that he really is trying. Stop being so unforgiving and demanding about his maximum sentence. Give the man a chance to make a change. Give him as much press about this as you have about his participation.

Posted by: V. Davis | October 3, 2007 07:42 AM

I do hope that something good comes out of Vick’s classes maybe by accident he will learn something. Hopefully he will become a spokesperson for animal rights! I don’t however feel that he has found Jesus, and is now a changed man. I think that he still has a very cocky I am going to do what I want to do attitude this was proven when he failed a drug test recently. They plainly told him not to do drugs, and that there would be a drug test, but Vick being so high and mighty above the law thought they would never do such to him. Now not only does he face dog fighting charges he has broken his probation. This is nothing but a recommendation for from his lawyers to help build character for when he faces the judge in December. I know people change but it does not happen over night so I am not ready to label him a model citizen anytime soon. His apology speech was lame in opinion and not heartfelt at all. Vick’s only regret is that he was caught, and he did not get to start the season with the Atlanta Falcon’s. Vick is hoping he can sit through a couple classes, regain peoples trust, pay a heavy fine, and step back on the football field.

I have been a PETA supporter for years. So I was shocked beyond belief
that PETA is helping Michael Vick in his quest to get a lighter
sentence and favorable publicity. By putting out this 'empathy
course' publicity, PETA is helping Vick to get a lighter sentence
(I'm sure PETA will send this info about MV passing the empathy test
to the Judge.) In turn, Vick is helping PETA get a lot of free
publicity (and donations.) PETA is way out of line and completely
unrealistic asking the NFL to make all players take their course.
This is just a cheap publicity stunt for PETA...it has nothing
whatsoever to do with helping pit bulls or affecting animal fighting.
In fact, with PETA helping Vick get good publicity at this crucial
point, PETA is, in effect, supporting Vick's terrible mistreatment of
dogs and helping to deminish his crime in the eyes of the public. For
a long time I have been sad to see the media and much of the public
discredit PETA saying they were only after the money. This stunt has
opened my eyes. I now believe PETA has helped MV in exchange for the
publicity and donations they will get. I don't think I will ever be
able to support PETA again and I just hope everyone else will see the
'MV takes PETA empathy course' stunt for what it is...a publicity
grabber for PETA in exchange for a way for Vick to influence the
judge and public that he deserves a lighter sentence. Oh, and btw, if
they were so interested in helping dogfighters in general to 'see the
light' and change their ways, did PETA make this same offer to Vick's
co-conspirators and other no-name dogfightrs? Or was it just to Vick
who had the ability to bring them some publicity?

Posted by: Barbara | October 3, 2007 09:19 AM

PETA isnt just about protesting,etc... it's about education.
I truely hope Vick got something from the course.
It's the ones that abuse animals that need the education most,so reguardless if he went for PR purpose or not I still hope he truely gets something out of it.

Posted by: icemaiden | October 3, 2007 09:23 AM

Vick is simply doing what his expensive high powered attornies are telling him to do. Nothing more to read into this. I am concerned that this will soften the reality of the crimes. I wish that Peta would have suggested this be mandated AFTER sentencing.

Posted by: RobinF | October 3, 2007 09:30 AM

I think any effort to raise people's awareness about animal welfare and animal rights is a worthy effort, and I'm glad to see that Michael Vick is willing to read the PETA materials.
But requiring the NFL to make such studies mandatory? Why?
There's something about that idea that doesn't sit well with me - like requiring an entire office of employees to take a drunk driving course because one of its members got in an accident while driving drunk. No, the course wouldn't hurt the employees; it might even be helpful to them to take it, but to REQUIRE them to take it would be infringing on their rights.
The NFL should, indeed, come out with a very strong policy against dog-fighting (or any other criminal behavior), so that any team member who commits same is automatically suspended from the league. But to make it mandatory to take PETA'S course is about as sensible as making it mandatory for the theoretical office (above) to take a safe-driving course from AAA. I doubt that even PETA can MAKE people take classes in humane treatment of animals and animal right, and even if we could, it wouldn't be a good idea.

Sounds a little "fishy" to me! The man has balls though! Of course he'll be presenting this to the judge, saying he's a changed man who passed with flying colors. A tiger doesn't change his stripes! Keep an eye on him PETA!

Posted by: Carla | October 3, 2007 10:18 AM

I truly hope that Michael Vick will evolve and enlighten as we are all are trying to do.I don't eat meat today but I used too before I learned. Yes Michael Vick must be held accountable. The past cannot be changed but the future can. PETA continues to teach and educate me.Some good can come out of these horrible actions. It must! To hate him is to drink poison and hope it kills him. It won't hurt him but it will kill you.Teach him and use him to change the future.

Posted by: Trudy Sparks | October 3, 2007 10:37 AM

Ritzy- PETA's work with Vick just made the homepage of CNN News - thereby doing far more than the humane society to further the cause of trying to teach people about compassion for animals. BTW, I think you meant "hare brained" - referring to the supposedly (but not in fact) dimwitted bunny rabbit, not to hairs.

Each of us has an "ON-OFF" switch to flip from love to hate, and we can turn on a dime. People have an enormous capacity to hate, on the basis of skin color, sex, religion, sports affilitation, species, etc. But they also are capable of incredible empathy and love - this is usually reserved for others who are "just like us". Our goal is to show people that in essence, animals ARE just like us.

If we can show Michael Vick how to flip ON his empathy switch for other creatures (dogs, in particular), then we have made the world a better place, and he could become an ally instead of a foe.

PETA is doing the absolute right thing in using this case to educate the public. But let's not forget the other big issues: meanwhile, 9,000,000,000 chickens and 40,000,000 cattle will be tortured and killed this year in ways that make Michael Vick look like a school kid. And it's legal!

Posted by: The Good Steve | October 3, 2007 10:46 AM

Let me fist say that, I'm sure there are many, many posts in this thread that mirror what I'm saying here, sorry for being redundant. I am completely and utterly disgusted with PETA and the national media on this. I hope that nobody buys this for 1 second. Vick is doing this for one reason and one reason only... to clear his name so he can get back to making an unnecessary amount of money to play a game, and even more money as a "brand sponsor" and most frighteningly... a ROLE MODEL. There has been many stances made by PETA that I have disagreed with over the years, but this one is just despicable. No more of my time, money and support will be going to them.

Posted by: mike | October 3, 2007 11:10 AM

ENOUGH ALREADY!!! We have mothers drowning their children in bathtubs and women shooting their husbands in the back as they sleep that are being punished as severely as Michael Vick. You will not find anyone that loves animals more than I do. I try to save birds with broken wings and then cry when they die but I think this Michael Vick situation has become so totally blown out of proportion. It's time to get our perspective back and let it go.

Posted by: Kristal | October 3, 2007 11:11 AM

I agree that this man should be locked in a cage for a long time and maybe then he will think about what he has done to so many innocent animals and feel what it's like! I'ts too late to be sorry now! There is no excuse to hurting animals, EVER!!!!

Posted by: Nadine | October 3, 2007 11:13 AM

I am shocked at the fact that PETA has given him a one day course. This man has done unspeakable things to these dogs and as an owner of a Pit Bull I'm appalled that a group that I have long supported just let him take a course - and in my opinion - only doing it for the publicity and to hopefully shave jail time off his sentence. I can not understand how anyone would believe him when he says he didn't know that this was wrong. My question is would he do these same cruel, disgusting things to children? Animals and children are both innocent one in the same. Would he skin a child, hang a child, let two children scratch each others eyes out? I saved a pit bull puppy from being used as bait in a fighting ring before. The pit - now 1 1/2 years still has a hole that goes through its ear and permanent scars on her belly from being abused in dog fighting. I saved her from 12 year old KIDS who didn't know better and whose parents were notified by police regarding this. He's a grown man who KNEW better.
PETA - I truly hope that he has not played you. Shit will hit the fan if he gets a slap on the wrist and does this again!!

Posted by: Melissa | October 3, 2007 11:25 AM

Kristal....I don’t know how many times people such as yourself need to be told this, but lets see if we can repeat it one more time I will go s-l-o-w!!!

Mothers drowning their children in bathtubs, or women shooting their husband is of no less importance it is a topic that needs attention as well just not on a PETA website... PETA is lets say it again People For The Ethical Treatment of.............ANIMALS!!!! Therefore if you are concerned about these other topics involving human cruelty there are many other web sites that you might find interesting that deal specifically with these topics. PETA just does not happen to be one of them....Got it or should be repeat it one more time for the ones of you that just are catching on to that fact quickly enough? The enough already part of your comment will come once Vick has served a long sentence in jail, and paid dearly for his part in cruelty for animals not one minute before.

Posted by: Dana | October 3, 2007 12:41 PM

You people are very stupid. Is PETA not private. Now they have Mike right where they want him, about to make a donation. This is about media and money. And by the way for all you animal lovers, what about what they do to horses, cows etc. Are they not animals too or do you just love dogs. You all need to go to church and read the bible. God said man is ruler over all living things, if this man wanted to make money off an a dog fighting ring, that is between him and his God. You cant judge anyone until you walk in their shoes. Oh and Melissa, get a life no one deserves to go to jail for killing anything that is not human. You people are ignorant and you are slow if you think someone deserves to go to jail for such a simple crime. Dont eat meat and any product that comes from it and then I can respect all of you as true animal lovers. Dogs are not the only animals.

Posted by: valerie | October 3, 2007 01:55 PM

This is all good news, but unfortunately if he is only exposed to education material and has never truly experienced canine warmth, love, tenderness, and devotedness and up close, he will probably not really get it fully. Maybe he should go to one of those prisons that pairs prisoners with dogs (i.e., James River Correctional in Goochland County, VA). They would need to closely monitor his behavior if he were sent there. That program has apparently turned many prisoners around and has positively impacted the doomed lives of many dogs.

Just saw story on m.vick for shame on peta he is playing for sympathy. After being arrested he said"I>VE FOUND JESUS" then was arrested for drup charges. peta don't backhim in his quest for symphany you will lose creditabily with people. I can't afford to send monies to PETA but I know the difference between right and wrong. Mickel Vick needs to lose what he has to appreciate what he has lost. PETA please don't let him use you for a lighter sentance. That goes for anyone else oing the crime, do the time and not expect us commer people who obey the laws to feel sorry for someone who ..This gets my blood riles Pat

Posted by: patty schmac | October 3, 2007 03:21 PM

The level of vitriol on these comments is a prime example of why no one outside of PETA has any respect for this organization. Extremists are extremists, and hate is hate, no matter what views you espouse.

Posted by: Lyle | October 3, 2007 03:33 PM

Is this for real???? Why would Peta not wait until Vick had been sentenced and done his time before letting this creature even try and repent. As far as Iam concerned all Peta did was give Vick and his lawyers ammo for a reduced sentence.. Very stupid move Peta. Very stupid move.

Posted by: Kerry H | October 3, 2007 03:34 PM

Obviously you don't have a life spouting your anti-animal garbage. Vick has his own God?? God did not say any of the garbage you just wrote, take your meds and breathe carefully.

Posted by: Ana | October 3, 2007 04:07 PM

Valerie,

Have you completely lost your mind? Are you trying to say that God would agree with Michael Vick dog fighting, because we "supposedly" we are ruler over animals. That is the lamest thing I have heard so far.

As for a simple crime no matter how simple you think it is just so happens it is FEDERAL OFFENCE so thank goodness many others do not share your definition of "simple"! As for us being slow I think you are the one that is slow get with the times people are no longer going to stand by and watch humans torture, and beat harmless animals that can not defend themselves or don’t even know to any longer!!!! I worry about people when they show such little compassion as this to say that what Vick has done is simple.....

Posted by: Dana | October 3, 2007 04:35 PM

I suppose it's possible he has made a change (yeah right) but I am not buying it. I don't have to so I'm not. I think his motive is more to try and save his ass as much as he can rather than having a heartfelt change. Before any holier than thou people decide that they have to try and make me change my mind, don't waste your time. My opinion and I'm not changing it.

Posted by: sherri | October 3, 2007 04:42 PM

God said man is ruler over all living things, if this man wanted to make money off an a dog fighting ring, that is between him and his God.

Not if I can help it Valerie (by the way, you calling people stupid and your nasty little posts make you look like such a great God fearing person as you seem to want others to be *points and laughs at you*. You better believe if anything like dog fighting is happening around in this area people are keeping it quiet because some of us don't put up with that kind of thing. So, Valerie, you are saying that everyone who is posting here eats meat? You are suddenly God? If you don't want to judge Michael Vick that is your choice, however, I am going to. Have you not seen the articles on the PETA site about other animals besides dogs?

Posted by: sherri | October 3, 2007 04:57 PM

Valerie:

Patience, patience, alot of it is needed to read your comments.

What's that wonderful quote?

"There is no one more ignorant than the one who who criticizes something that he or she knows little or nothing about."

What do you know about PETA?

By the way: Don't get your hands on any living being.

Posted by: Jen | October 3, 2007 05:05 PM

How is an empathy course developed? There are many that could benefit from such. I work as a Humane Law Enforcement Officer and the DA is always asking about a course that we can institute along side of legal ramifications. Until now, we usually have the individual go to anger management or domestic violence courses because there is no way we are letting them in our shelter!!

Posted by: LadyBull | October 3, 2007 05:34 PM

"The level of vitriol on these comments is a prime example of why no one outside of PETA has any respect for this organization. Extremists are extremists, and hate is hate, no matter what views you espouse."

Actually Lyle, PETA has a lot of support, not the least from high-profile celebrities.

Stick around a while and you'll get an idea of the flamebaiters that try (unsuccessfully) to rile PETA members.

Posted by: Mike Quinoa | October 3, 2007 06:01 PM

WOW ! I am totally amazed by some of PETA's public statements regarding Mick Vick attending "empathy" training in hopes of helping him understand that animals do have sensation of pain etc. Really, 99.9% of all humans can view an animal in distress or pain and realize that they have brains, nerves, feeling, etc. Children as young as 3 or 4 years old can see an animal react to pain AND show empathy towards that animal. It's ridiculous to even imply that any adult needs "training" to understand an animal's feeling of pain or suffering. PETA, please don't try to use Vick as some means of furthering your cause. His facing many, many years in prison is plenty of reason for him to continue to be dishonest about his thoughts or feelings. Remember, his first statement about the dog breeding and fighting was that he had no knowledge of it whatsoever. Lastly, there is NO WAY he should be asked or expected to educate children or adults about animals. THINK - we don't waste time and effort trying to educate child molesters about the pain they caused and we sure don't use them to educate others about the affects of molestation. Vick should be treated as most of them are - put away for life with no physical possibility of harming again! (Whether PETA is doing it or not, at least one national news network is reporting that PETA has asked Vick to be a spokesperson for them !!!) If Vick didn't see the pain and suffering he caused the dogs when he did it, with blood literally on his hands, he sure won't "have an awakening" through training - he is already lost ! Those who molest or harm other humans or animals have a compromised mental capacity - taking them out of society is the only solution.

Posted by: Wayne | October 3, 2007 07:34 PM

You people have nothing better to do! You will go and watch men who beat each others brains out and kill each other and say nothing, but have a fit when people fight pit bulls. They are dogs, not humans. Get your priorities in order.

I have to say that there is a positive aspect about the Michael Vick's ordeal, I'm so very happy to say that I've been a vegetarian for 2 months now. How did this happened? after following very closely the Vick's saga I ended up visiting this website for the first time in my life and when I saw Pam's Anderson video about KFC, it broke my heart watching the little chickens suffering, not to mention the pigs that were fried alive, I must say it got to me and I made a choice right there ... now after two months of zero meat and lots of good cooking from my wife, who has take on the task of making great meatless menus, I have come a long way and I feel very good about my self and the choice I made. I still drink milk and eat chesse, but I think this is a great start. I have to say that I think Michael Vick greatly regret his lack of judgement and sensibility and that his learned his lesson and if converted to an animal lover he will one day be a great embassador, everybody deserves a second chance.

Posted by: Julio Bermudez | October 4, 2007 12:14 AM

I am thrilled that that Vick came to PETA - like it or not, this publicity will benefit Peta, and, will show Vick as a changed man - a changed man, now showing concern for animals from this person who's done horrific acts - will be a MAJOR IMPRESSION on the kids & adults who lookup to him & are obsessed with football.
I think, and I pray, re a previous blog, that more animal cruelty animal cases are showing up, is because people are MORE AWARE now, and are reporting them. Hopefully, it's also 'cause law enforcement is taking it more seriously too.
A bow to Ingrid & Dan, and the rest of PETA folks. Let's all be warriors for compassion & justice.

Posted by: Tee | October 4, 2007 12:27 AM

I'm an avid animal rescuer. I have dogs that have been dropped off on our road, and have campaigned for PETA and supported the HSUS for years. I've also moderated an animal activist board for a few years as well, helping to educate and inform people of the actions of irresponsible pet owners, and lobby for stronger animal abuse laws.

This was an obvious ploy by Vick's attorneys. And PETA should have waited until AFTER his sentencing and incarceration until getting involved with his 'seemingly miraculous' reformation.

As for his being a spokesperson for PETA, this is just ridiculous.

I'm about finished with supporting PETA after this. My time and donations will go to the HSUS now, for sure.

Posted by: Mountain Gramma | October 4, 2007 07:55 AM

wendy,

You are on the wrong blog dear. This is the PETA blog.. but it's nice to know that someone like you who knows everyone's feelings who posts here (or at least you think you do) is up on the job and alert. Fucking wacko.

Posted by: sherri | October 4, 2007 08:59 AM

You people can say what you want. You all will learn about PETA when Mike Vick writes them a check. As I stated earlier if you eat meat, shut up! Go out there an make a change in another cause because dog fighting will never stop. Have people stop wearing furs. NO! Say what you want but Mike Vick is not a monster and anyone who questions where another person has found GOD should look in the mirror first. While you are posting notes here children in America as well as other animals other than dogs are being killed and mistreated by the second. I dont eat meat, have not for over ten years. I have dogs and I love them. But I dont mistake a dog for a human. I would rather see this kind of anger over children and the elderly than a stupid dog. Say what you want, but each person knows there are more important issues. And Mike Vick does not deserve to go to jail under GOD's law. I will pray for all of you. And the next time you pick up that steak or those pork chops think about that animal died.

Posted by: Valerie | October 4, 2007 09:02 AM

Julio, it was nice to read your comments - a lot of people criticized PETA for singling out Mike Vick at the time of the indictment. Your comments show that their campaign to "Sack Vick" brought people to the website, and checked out other aspects of PETA's work.

Congratulations on your new venture in life. Even though you sound almost apologetic that you still eat cheese and drink milk, you should not feel that way, because you have taken a huge step already, and have prevented the deaths of almost 100 animals per year just by going vegetarian. Best of luck! (if you have not already done so, check out www.goveg.com for some awesome recipes)

I am vegan so I don't have to worry about eating the flesh of tortured and slaughtered animals nor of wearing their skins. Attitudes do change and cruelty to animals is a well known topic even among the animal/killers/haters. So animal rights is making progress. You need anger managemnet classes because your comment is inundated with too much anger and hate. Even better, pray to God to let go of your anger and of judging animal advocates. Peace.

Also, again, you are on the PETA blog. Please learn how to work that little mouse, it's not very hard, I promise.

I am not angry. I cant get mad at ignorant people. Forgive US father for WE know not what we do. You can interpret the bible anyway you want fyi! As I stated, you can say what you want, Mike Vick is no different than any of us. You people are the one's who are burning him at the stake! As if you or I have room to judge. We dont. At the end of the day PETA made an executive decision. They finally got the lime light. And Micheal plans to make a donation to them. He is my neighbor and although I do not agree with what he did, he is very sorry. He has expressed to me and my husband how he wishes he could change what he did and make better choices. He is a very smart and talented young man. I am confident if has found God as he has told us, that he will be able to get past this. He has played with my children and my dogs and is not the monster you people betray him as. I caution each of you as well as myself to see past the exterior and look at people as God looks at us all. I am not perfert and do not claim to be, but I am a working progress. What is funny is that I watched from my house all of you PETA supporters with your signs, but your not here anymore. What happend? Money and fame talk. But everyone and everything has to make decisions for themselves. And that is what PETA did. I'm glad he is changing his life. He really is a nice person and if more people knew what kind of a person he really was you would not say the things you do. So if you dont know a person and only can judge mistakes and views from your television screen, I feel very sorry for you. May God Bless and keep each of you always. And may he look upon you with less judgemental eyes than you have looked at Michael with.

"You people are the ones that are curel to animals. Now sleep on that!"

To whoever wrote this, you are EXTREMELY ignorant! You obviously have NO education what so ever that deals with animals and don't know anything about them in general. It is not the breed in general, an animal is like that due to the way they are brought up, handled, and because of idiotic individuals like Michael Vick that train and force them to be aggressive. And to say that we make the world work and that dogs are killers, but aren't we as well? You see in the news where we kill each other more often than when you see dogs attack people. Only difference is that most of the time it is in instinct for an animal, but not for a human. You talk so much about God, but he is the only one who can judge and from what I can see that is all you are doing in your post. So good try on trying to seem like you are educated, and judge everyone else, but next time you might want to learn how to spell and type before posting.

Posted by: Rachel Pettibone | October 6, 2007 07:10 PM

I am not a dog owner. I think abusing all animals is wrong. The Vick case has received more attention from PETA and the media because he has money. It would be nice if PETA and the media could put all that energy into all of the animal abuse cases.

PETA did a great job by educating Vick on animal abuse. It's a start for Vick. Sometimes people make mistakes or do wrong because they does not know the impact it can cause.

Vick should be a spoke person for PETA so he can teach others that it's wrong to mistreat animals.

PETA - you baffle me....a pedafile can be released from jail, say he is a changed man and then go molest a neighbors daughter. it happens all the time (i know first hand). once a sicko always a sicko. i hope the empathy course makes him sick to his stomach but common it's not changing that sick buck. i hope he goes to prison and someone kills him. i don't believe in the death sentence but i don't care if another inmate stabs him with a dull butter knife. i hope he rots forever.

i don't see the point in NFL players having to take an empathy course either. it's seems a little racists. if one priest (okay like 50) is a molestor not ALL priests are molestors. i understand that you want to take action but i feel that you just don't have any great ideas just yet on how to go about doing it. i would re-think it again....

Posted by: vick needs a rape stand for when he goes to jail | October 23, 2007 05:59 AM

Not sure about the empathy course for NFL players.

I do feel he is getting off light.

And through all his apologies... not once did I hear an apology for the dogs he abused!! I am sure he is sorry he was caught, but I certainly don't believe he is sorry for the abuse he inflicted on those innocent lives!

All of you are sitting here judging a man that you rarely know, saying what he should and should not get like you are GOD almighty. Everyone welcomes a jail sentence and rebuke reform! Wow! Sweep around your own door! These comments comming from people who love animals and sound like they hate a human being! So much love for animals and so much hate for mankind!!

Posted by: Evet | December 17, 2007 12:48 AM

So basically PETA is saying, animals can be rehabilitated and people cannot. What a cult.

Posted by: j havard | December 17, 2007 12:49 AM

PETA has the right idea. alot of the people that do these horrible things were raised with the idea that "it's just an animal". so it was a good idea to school the bastard.
as for the stereotyping, one of the excuses Vick supporters used was that NFL players are so competitive that they do things like this in the off season to please their competitive side without harming they're bodies. so obviously, this is common in professional sports.

Posted by: cassie | December 18, 2007 03:09 AM

Vick is a horrible man and is only acting like he cares to improve his image....i think he should get more time then he did...he makes me sick

Valerie you are rewriting God's law to fit your own delusions.

Yes as human beings it is our job to manage the earth and the animals, but as 'shepherds' not 'rulers' and 'dictators.' We are here to care for the earth and animals, not manipulate them to serve our own selfish desires, which is exactly what MV was doing.

As much religion as you spout, I don't think you really get a lot of things. Do you honestly think God thinks its OK for an innocent animal to be body slammed against a wall? Can you tell me in the Bible where it says God will as for an accounting for *all* blood spilled?

I want some of what you're taking ...

I must say reading this lets me know how dumb people are I agree with Valerie you people have no right to destroy a Man for a dog and one person actually said that pitbulls aren't mean by nature thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard you must have never been around any you have to train them to be nice because there mean by nature in DC if you have pit it's cool but if you live in MD then your dog will be killed on site so this has nothing to do with anything but getting another rich black man behind bars because they never took action til dog fighting became a felony this year(do your research if you think I'm lying)and most of you writing this are probably white and don't get down with black people anyway because you must have lost your mind to tell me you can slaughter horses, cows, turkeys, and etc. but killing a dog is the worst why because someone said thats mans best friend well it's not and believe me I'm an african american so I don't condone tourture of any kind but this man didn't deserve to lose everything over something that most people use for hunting firefighters use dogs fbi uses dogs and it's all for jobs they are to scared to do so in a way thats crulety to animals but the point is none of you all know this man he could have been betting aganist one of your relatives you never know but know this we won't let Mike Vick die he will be back in the NFL and hes gonna win a ring and you know what I hope it's for your favorite team because to end a human life for a dog is just as wrong as senseless torture of animals so I hope one day you all realize that you all treat pitbulls like black people anyway see one coming down the street and your gonna cross it so get the hate out your eyes and give this man the respect a human deserves I wish you all cared as much about our troops as you do these dogs then maybe the war would be over but I doubt it because for some reason america loves to see humans die as long as their not white.

PULL THE RACE CARD. I DON`T CARE IF YOU ARE " AFRICAN AMERICAN".WHAT PART OF AFRICA ARE YOU FROM? THE EXCUSES FOR BAD CONDUCT IS "WHITEY`S" FAULT.VICK IS JUST ANOTHER ROLE MODEL GONE BAD FOR BLACK KIDS.

Posted by: w. curtis | December 24, 2007 01:33 AM

I agree with "Vick Supporter" except for the part about pitbulls being naturally mean. They are naturally aggressive to other animals but being naturally aggressive to people is not tolerated by respectable breeders and owners. That is a FACT. I wonder if all of these peta supporters are vegitarians. I hope so but I doubt it I think they are the biggest hypocrits ever. I never saw a live cheesebuger. How can you say one man is wrong but say it's okay for thousands or maybe millions of people to chase deer and other animals through the woods shooting them down.(many not dying quickly and painlessly). What about Mike Huckabee shooting birds on national TV. What about animal shelters throughout the country killing dogs of certain breeds (even puppies). And as for "Mr. Racist" Don't try to talk about role models gone bad for black kids because you have no clue about who real role models are for black kids. Thats like me saying Chris Benoit failed white kids. Get real! Support our troops

okay.
he only did that to not only make it look like he was stupid and didnt know... but to also get people to think he was a saint in the end.
he shouldve gotten more than 24 months.
he shouldve died the same way his dogs did.

While it's noble that PETA would like to ensure that all of the NFL empathizes with and loves animals in attempt to address and combat the allegations that other NFL players run and participate in dogfighting operations, it is also infringing on the rights of those that don't participate in this type of conduct. NFL players didn't get drafted for being animal lovers, they got drafted for their skills on the field. Asking the NFL to make this test mandatory that Vick voluntarily took as part of his sentencing and attempt to save his tarnished reputation is unfair to those players who are animal lovers and or pet owners. Your basically putting them in a box with animal cruelty offenders without prior knowledge to their character, experience and backgrounds. Might as well make a lie detector test and criminal background check mandatory if they already aren't. I can see this test being mandatory if its ALREADY SUSPECTED that a player is involved in animal cruelty or similar offenses but not randomly off rip just because of one persons actions. Innocent until proven guilty, or has PETA forgotten the cardinal rule of the justice system this country supposedly upholds? Let's go after the bad guys inside AND outside the NFL

Curtis

I have to address you on this one because obviously you aren't black. I don't know what race you belong to, don't care. You may not be white but um hate to break it to you but anytime a man is heavily penalized, ridiculed and sentenced for punishing animals when there's murderers and rapists serving little to no time, there's a problem. The history of dog fighting can be traced back to ancient Rome, medieval England and grew in popularity in the 60's and 70's in the States before moving being donned illegal and underground. It was popular and had ALWAYS been considered a "sport", illegal or not way before Vick was even born. While I do not agree nor condone the "sport" or Vick's involvement or even Vick's supporter's post, the race card does apply here. Michael Vick was made an example of. Of all the horrendous dog fighters that exist and have existed in this country, he happened to get caught, is a high profile black athlete who was loved by thousands, had multi million dollar endorsements and had a promising future as the Falcons franchise player. Should he have been punished? ofcourse! He was stupid! He committed a crime against animals, his own race and those that looked up to him. He is not a good role model but he is a good example of how you can be crucified and made a scapegoat for who and what you are. How about going after other people that abuse animals with same passion and valor as PETA did Vick? Throw the book at them too with an iron clad fist like Judge Hudson did in sentencing him to 23 months in prison. If you gonna do it to one person, do it to them all. Black, white, yellow or red. Rich or poor. Then tell Vick supporter to not use the "race card". You and other people on this board all know that these other people would not have been prosecuted and pursued so heavily. To create the outrage needed to push this matter beyond a few concerned animal lovers and activists, you needed a talented black athlete like Vick to be your posterboy. Let's be real people the playing field is still not equal!

Equestrian Horses, Race Dogs, Race Horses. All of which are condoned cruelty to animals. They are all multi-billion dollar industries with more atrocities against animals the likes of which, and a history of such that dworf that of this miniscule dogfighting activity. Don't give me that crap that this has nothing to do with race. The difference between Vick and the avante guard in those sports are "Corn Rows" and "Three Piece Suits with a Guilded age pedigree" and the title as a sport for gentlemen. Where the hell are you PETA on this issue. Where are your ready made flip charts and hate chants for the dapper rich that symbolize American duality and hypocracy. What Vick did was illegal, he broke the rules and should be punished. But when he gets out. You people damn well better find it in urselves to forgive him and give him a chance. Everyone hides a monsterous act within themselves. Think about how life would be for you, if you were judged by your worst act in your life, and most of your life was still ahead of you. If you have a child, take the time to look at them and the mistakes they will make in life, and imagine them being judge by others who only know them by their mistakes. Get out of your tunnel vision and view people in their entirety. He is a Father, a son, a brother, and a loved one of many. If you continue to call him a monster, and deem him not worthy of forgiveness or redemption. What is his child to learn from this process, when he or she is old enough to read some of the comments above that clearly show the depth of ugliness to which people view one another. "Way to preserve future generations and sway them to your cause"

I am truly surprised by PETA's naivety. Dog fighting is not simply done because one is not educated on the information about animals (thoughts, feelings, etc). This stems from something deeper - anyone with basic psychology courses could tell you this. It took years and years for him to fight his dogs and finally get caught - what makes you think that it will only take weeks or months for this man to change? And perhaps he will never change - he was obviously raised with a certain perception about what he was doing. PETA really needs to lay off.

Posted by: Stacy | January 21, 2008 10:56 PM

do not belive him, he is a terrible person who has no morals. those poor dogs what he really should do if he is so sorry, he should give police information about all the dog fighting rings and donate alot of money to groups that try to stop money, any body who acually thinks he is good should go to jail with him, because you apperantly love him so much and i would like to see how you feel if your dog was put in the position of those dogs.

Posted by: Anonymous | January 22, 2008 07:17 PM

Give me a break people, we are comparing the life of a dog to the life of a man, a tax paying citizen. I know what he did was wrong, but do you really think he should sit in jail when people wear fur coats everyday and no one is trying to lock them up. The real case is this, Vick is a VERY rich Black man in America and we all know that if he was a Very rich White man in America we would not have even heard about the case. People spend too much time nit-picking about the wrong thing, this should not have happened and I don't care how many dogs they killed, the number will never surpass the damage we are doing in Iraq, that is the real story, period.

Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 02:20 PM

Hey you idiots.. and the other half that aren't so idiotic.. Remember that Mr. Vick is an animal too. If you found out that some asshole locked up a dog for the rest of it's natural life and fed it only bread and water you would be pissed. In fact you would probably have a little army of idiots that would find a way to break hime out. Dogs, cats and yummy farm animals can learn. That's what all of you (PETA) and me love about them. They can think, reason, and become better. Give Mr. Vick a chance at the same. Punish him - Yes. Ruin him - No. Use your heads besides something to put a protest logo hat on.

Since the goal is to get all people to give animals proper treatment, I support PETA using Vick in Public Service ads (to be shown on school in-class cable networks as well as regular cable/broadcast channels). Whether or not Vick "has changed" doesn't matter as much as getting the PETA message to children and teenagers, the potential future mis-treaters of animals.

wgt doesnt peta request that all military personnel also participate in the Developing Empathy for Animals in light of the current case against the Marine who threw a puppy off a cliff?
