Iowa Vet Defends Hanging

During an undercover investigation conducted by the Humane Farming Association at Wiles Hog Farm in Creston, Ohio, employees were caught killing sows by fastening a chain around their necks and attaching it to a front-end loader, which was hoisted into the air, strangling the animals to death over a period of four to five minutes. In addition to testifying that this was a reasonable form of "euthanasia," the doctor opined that Wiles Farm's practice of dragging, kicking, and dropping sows off a 4-foot ledge was an acceptable method of transporting the animals to their deaths.
Along with five other major animal protection organizations, we have asked the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association to immediately investigate this pathetic excuse for a veterinarian. The Iowa Veterinary Practice Act explicitly prohibits "knowingly making misleading, deceptive, untrue, or fraudulent representation in the practice of the profession," and if his testimony is shown to have violated this clause, we're asking them to immediately revoke his vet's license.
As PETA VP Bruce Friedrich puts it, "Dr. Armbrecht's testimony directly contradicts industry guidelines, which provide only the bare minimum of protection for animals. Giving the okay to a killing method that causes animals to slowly strangle to death makes Dr. Armbrecht a disgrace to the veterinary profession, and it opens the door for even more widespread abuse of animals."
It's a little tough to watch, but here's some video footage of the practices that Dr. Armbrecht recently defended as being "humane."
Please click here to contact the Iowa Vet Board about this issue now.

I would love to hang this "FAT BASTARD" and see how it feels to him.
Sick, fat f--k.

I think Jack's comment about "full wallet" pretty well sums up his motivation. If his testimony is found to violate the Iowa Veterinary Practice Act, apart from losing his license, he should also be charged with perjury.

Why a front end loader? Is rope too little to ask for? Rope is fine, but a CAT? WTF
Posted by: halo snipe | October 22, 2007 11:13 PM
This sadly is only the Tip Of The Iceberg., where factory farming welfare issues begin ! This '' Quack Vet '' the farm hands.,and management should have been sent to Prison. What message does this send out to other would be abusers. Come to that, how can we critise the Aussie Sheep Farmers until our own House Is Put In Order.
Posted by: keith | October 23, 2007 06:39 AM
So his opinion of what's humane is different then PETA's. There's a surprise.NOT! Sorry to disappoint PETA but his license won't be revoked for disagreeing with you.
Posted by: Mars | October 23, 2007 08:01 AM
This case has been well known for quite a while now, a horrendous example of the callous way farm animals are treated on the "factory farms". These abuses will continue until factory farming can be phased out and ended. There is no such thing as a "humane" factory farm.

Dr. Armbrecht definitely needs to have his license revoked. What a jerk.
Posted by: Jaclyn | October 23, 2007 09:07 AM
What an asshole! Ok, so I don't know much about how the law works but what happens now considering the accused men were let off?
Besides the lies this idiot gave to the court, couldn't the judge see the video and see that the sows actually did suffer? Or was the tape not produced in the courts? Sorry for not being much informed about this.
In any case, once again no justice would be done for the animals. It's sick and this bastard needs to lose his job.

Oh, so it's prefectly fine to hang pigs! How in the world does that make it a reasonable form of euthanasia? What kind of twisted world do we live in if we can't even trust a man that should have the best interest of the animals! Mr. Paul Armbrecht this is MURDER and nothing less! Shame on you and I hope you get your license taken away for good. Because of you sticking up for these individuals you opened up the door for copycats! Thanks alot, don't you think pigs suffer enough!
Posted by: Carla | October 23, 2007 10:34 AM
Armbrecht represents the problem with the AVMA as it it right now- older men who are large-animal vets and work within the livestock industry.
They do not feel that their job involves the health and welfare of animals.
They believe that their mission is to protect the PROFITS of the livestock industry and support anything the livestock industry does.

Here once again a very ugly individual out of human species shows us what's coming out of a lowlife existence mouth and heart! such creeping junk should be eradicated from this planet! and here i'm not writing nicely because THEY are not nice but incredibly criminal, primitive and underdogish!
Posted by: Old Spiderwoman | October 23, 2007 11:43 AM
The similarity between the treatment of these pigs and Michael Vick`s dogs is chilling. Sadly there will not be a public outcry so thank heavens for Peta and the other groups for getting this horrifying story out there. It´s a shame that people don´t realize what wonderful animals pigs are. The Satantic vet should loose his license forever! The sadistic breeder as well. I wonder how many people who eat pork could watch this video and not feel for these poor animals.
Posted by: Maureen | October 23, 2007 12:41 PM
oh my god. yet another strong display of the disgusting and cruel ways humans inflict on animals to let them suffer so needlessly. the noises themselves are enough to make me want to throw up!! can we find any other ways to torture animals you sick fuckers. i hope you all lead horrible lives, and if you dont now, in the end you will suffer all the pain you have inflicted on every single animal you tortured!!! yet, i am still surprised at the things humans do.
Posted by: Kris Shulfer | October 23, 2007 12:42 PM
this footage has upset me more than words can express, and the chrges brought agaist this farm desrve a much stronger punishment, my god this vet is probably a serial killer, has to be for him to call this humane, ASS WIPE
Posted by: sandi geoghegan | October 23, 2007 03:43 PM
This does seem less effective than shooting the pigs in the head with a shotgun.
Though if they shot the pigs there could be a chance of a bullet fragment in my bacon and this would upset me more.
Maybe a high pressure water cannon would work best, does anyone know where we can email these farmers and suggest this?
Posted by: Craig5 | October 23, 2007 04:58 PM
Halo Snipe ,a rope is NOT okay. What if it was a person?Yeah , I know it's not a "two legged mammal" but remember, there are many similarities physiologically and emotionally. They feel pain as we do and they have many kinds of diseases as we do.
Mars, once again you are talking just to talk ,and missing every major point of compassion for living beings that this issue, and many others brought up here presents. It's not whether or not someone agrees or doesn't agree with PETA it's about CARING AND COMPASSION. Enough said.

I would like to hang him and see how he likes it!
Posted by: Aleasha | October 24, 2007 01:03 AM
It makes me so angry to know that they would even consider using a medieval method of toture on a beautiful pig! What arses! They have NO hearts! Gutless wonders!
Posted by: Animal Lover | October 24, 2007 05:09 AM
This man should not be allowed to practice veterinary medicine any longer. He has violated that right. That he could keep a straight face while he testifies amazes me. He was probably gently carressing the money in his pocket put there by the factory farmers to remind him of why he would lie under oath. Piece of absolute shit. These gentle, intelligent, loving creatures. May you rot in some kind of hell Ambrecht. Alot of people will be praying for this. Karma can be a bitch.

Everyone involved in this case -including the judge and the prosecutor - has me TOTALLY convinced that there HAS to be a species of brain-dead sub-humans that are not even near the MUCH, MUCH, MUCH higher status of animals.
PeTA, please keep us informed if that brain-dead "vet" ever gets charged with perjury (and possible bribery), and any update about the civil suit against the farm of horrors that is run by sadists! (I wonder what else goes on there.)
Just seeing the picture of that disgusting creature - the "vet" - nauseates me!

FYI: When I click on the petitions to go out to the Vet Board, it's not working.
Any suggestions?

Judith, to answer violence with violence in this case is not civilized. I thought I was supposed to be the barbarian.
Don't forget, "redneck" is racially/ethnically offensive to rural white people.

the poison-cup of human evil doers is dramatically overflowing and flooding the shores of the just! this latest monster crime - committed by human beings - is absolutely intolerable! it's a deadly shame for the whole humanity and an affront against human dignity! i ask myself, how much inimaginable pain, suffering, martyrdom and heroic death in the animal kingdom it shall take until this planet shall be whiped out from the astronomers map?! this is an outcry here and if there is a god - hear me - it's enough now!!!!!!! it's high time for action - or you are not credible anymore! when i'm waiting for my fiancee for 100 years and he doesn't arrive - is there any???? (fiancee) or in other words - if humanity is tooo rotten and weak and corrupted - flesh, bones and mind - to wear the crown of creation - it has to be taken away from them - urgently! i don't give a razor blade to a three years old child and let it alone to do with it what it likes! in this case i'm not allmighty or not allgood!!!! everyone got it!!!!!! fine! i start to fear that there is just one solution for the animals to have a better life (in the arms of death they are sheltered and at rest) - the complete anihilation of this planet and hence humanity - me just i hope that in no future lifes at aaaaaaaaaaaallll my feet shall touch this cursed ground of this hellish planet! because there is no love, no pleasure - and very soon no beauty left at all here - but torture and killing of innocent beings!(included the humans) a person who can feast on this is nothing else than an aborted, abnormal monster!
a crime is a crime, also when it's committed against a non-human life and with the silent approval of the churches and the statal benedictions of men's laws! i spit on them! may they all be cursed and rot in hell!!! - sorry but i'm really angry now!!!!!

Ok, that's just disgusting! That's not even mean...that's just horrific! Jesus Christ, he calls that humane? C'mon, if he considers this a human practice, I'm willing to bet 10 years from now we'll see him again...only on news coverage where he's a convicted murderer! Hang the a-hole!
Posted by: MeL | October 24, 2007 01:00 PM
Are you kidding me??! they think that is not animal abuse! what kind of a person does that....i'd like to do the exact same thing to them. See how that ass hole likes it. What an f'in IDOT!!!
Posted by: Kelly | October 24, 2007 04:23 PM
I agree with several other comments. Since Dr. Armbrecht recommeds his methods so highly, he should prove how humane they are by testing them on himself. I would be more than happy to assist him.

At Des Moines Register, wherein a newspaper article appeared today on the Vet, Dr. A in this blog, you can't - or probably can - imagine the XXXX spewed by animal haters in the comment section. Guess I am still shocked at the callous, unconcern and blatant animal cruelty reflected in most of the comments. PETA is their enemy, along with all animal advocates. I tried to articulate some statements in protest of the brutal hanging of the poor pigs on Wile's Farm, only to be met with horrible statements and jokes about e.g.: "can't wait to eat a pork chop tonight, grille a steak and watch it fall apart, and etc." These people are out to keep farm animals in as much misery as possible, and obviously they simply don't give a damn. Scarey, really, if I didn't know so many dedicated good people in AR movement, it would be easy to give up. However, I hope each and everyone of you will answer each and every one of these articles with comments in support of stopping industrialized animal abuse within factory farming system, and speak up for the wonderful AR groups who work for this goal. Very sad to realize so many consumers/citizens...people don't give a XXX about the suffering of animals as long as they have a big fat dead piece of animal flesh to eat every day. Go PETA, and save the animals, one at a time, one meal at a time! Courage!
Posted by: Zonah | October 24, 2007 06:06 PM
Do not be surprised Kris., we are the lowest form of Animal Life Alive. Please come the Day Of Judgement !! will be the only solution to Human Kinds destruction of this Planet. We have all behaved like idiots and deserve no Quarter !!!!
Posted by: keith | October 25, 2007 01:40 PM
Halo Snipe, NO a rope is NOT OKAY! These animals feel pain as we do. Mars, you are once again arguing just to argue. You don't seem to know of compassion and empathy towards animals. Once again you are trivalizing a horrible truth. The point is not disagreeing or agreeing with PETA. It's what is right and wrong regarding the 4 legged mammmals. We are mammals just as they are-only we have 2 legs. But there is alot of simialrity between us both phyisologically and emotionally. Enough said.
Posted by: c. | October 25, 2007 07:23 PM
This is absolutely sick. For those of you who say he shouldn't get his licensed revoked for not agreeing with PETA, you don't think he should get it revoked for this?

Lions do not have a rifle to quickly kill an animal, they often seek the sick and the weak and try to kill it as quickly as possible. Man has the mean to kill an animal quickly, without stress and pain ... but man is callous and uncaring. Greed has replaced compassion on factory farms.

craig5: no feelings at all - ah! how would it feel if i put a rope around your neck and hang you or maybe a high pressure water cannon would do it to blow you into eternity - i would do it with pleasure and be proud of it - if you seriously mean what you talk - no human sympathy with heart-crippled abortions of mother nature and who don't give peace to other living beings but just steal their lifes! may they be cursed in eternity!
Posted by: hidden ace | October 26, 2007 06:02 PM
Hey C
All I was saying was if you're gonna hang something, do it the old fasihoned way, and use a rope, not a construction vehicle!
Posted by: Mr. Chief | October 26, 2007 06:06 PM
Steve, im all for animal rights - but a lion doesnt kill the weaker antelope out of compassion. he saves his energy, he wants to protect his own hide -- but what the wild does though is FAIR and square, each side can fight for their life equally, this is the problem with large scale farming operations and perhaps even smaller ones. no nobility. even hunting seems fairer, theres always that chance that the 'big one' might get away - though i disagree with that practice as well ( hunting being more for pleasure here in america and not for substenance, doesnt make sense to me),
Posted by: Stasya | October 27, 2007 03:59 AM
craig5, I think you are right, a bullet to the head would be much more effective, efficient and merciful. I have no idea what these morons sought to achieve but they certainly chose the wrong method. Shotguns are too messy and dangerous, but a .22 hollow point costs only a few cents compared to operating a loader, going to the effort of roping the pig and waiting for it's death. Dumb for so many reasons.
Posted by: rojo | October 27, 2007 10:24 AM
This is typical of expert testimony for the rich and corporate interests. The voiceless will not get justice because they can not afford it. Ask Ron Goldman and OJ Simpson. Frankly the judge should be rebuked too for his failure to let the evidence speak for itself.
The number one way to get this stopped is to boycott Iowa farm products till they self police themselves from frauds like this vet. Strangulation is not euthanization and creates unnecessary suffering to the animal.

If it were a person, well, it depends. It it were someone like Kim Jong Il or Dubya, wOOt! (Id give the executioner a medal). If it were someone like Lincoln, then you SOAB POS go to hell.

.22 cal hollowpoint? Hmph, never heard of it. I guess .22 cal is useful after all! (My favorites are 9mm steyer, Luger, 7.62, and .50 BMG. I AM NOT A HUNTER.)
Posted by: Caboose | October 29, 2007 04:07 PM
Fifth attempt to post,
As usual Mars is showing his lack of compassion and empathy for other living beings and agruing jus to argue. It's not whether or not someone agrees or disagrees with PETA, it's about the suffering of other beings that are alot like ourselves in many ways. Comment to Halo Snipe NO , a rope is NOT okay! Why is it always permissible and acceptable to hurt other beings that cannot defend or speak for themselves? No logic to me at all. I just hope the animals know on some level, that there are those of us who take up their cause for them.
Posted by: c. | October 29, 2007 08:26 PM
caboose, at close range, basically point blank, the .22 is particularly effective. I suggest hollowpoint because it will mushroom, do more damage to the brain and not penetrate the otherside of the skull.
I no longer "hunt", but use a .243 for feral destruction and have a .270 weatherby magnum for ... well just because I can. Did have a 7.62 semi-auto rifle but they were banned in Australia and i handed it in.
Posted by: rojo | October 29, 2007 10:29 PM
Jim
You sound like a Socialist.
Posted by: Caboose | October 29, 2007 11:48 PM
I know rojo, but it seems that a regular .22 is "a poor man's shotgun" since it is only practical in close range according to you.
Stupid laws. Nothing would have changed if in your country, the semi auto 7.62mm weapons werent b&. All this does is encourage criminals. Stupid legislature.
My 3 favorite pistols are all German. The Luger, the Mauser Broomhandle, and the Walther P 38.
Something very lethal would be a hollowpoint .50 BMG!

Nope. I reserve compassion and empathy for those that deserve and understand that level of emotion, humans.

You mean like plants?Amazing how the vegans sound like us meat eaters when they are forced to defend their diet.

Comment to Rojo,
instead of killing ferals, why don't you try calling/ getting with a group that does trap/neuter /return? Why not save a life instead of taking a life? My God, they are mammals as we are. They are not purposely trying to get on your nerves. They like us ,are just trying to survive in their own way.
