Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan has been the hottest ticket in India for a long time. He's been in about a hundred movies, many of which are among the top-grossing Indian films of all time, and he's reported to be working on a new film called Shantaram, starring Johnny Depp. He also happens to be an outspoken vegetarian and a longtime supporter of PETA India's work on behalf of animals. So a couple of my pals from PETA India did something special for his birthday this week to thank him for everything he's done. Here's a pic:

Happy Birthday Amitabh!

Heh, he ain't no Shar Rukh Khan.

Posted by: Ray-O | October 12, 2007 03:39 PM

Ray-O:
In this case Shar Rukh Khan should be a guiding light in your life! Just now he published a great report against the meanness of hunting and poaching and that the animal guardians in the forests are heroes who are risking their lifes daily for to protect animal life! And in his wonderful movie 'ashoka' there's much about animal protection inside and he's talking to a cow - calling her 'venerable-one'! So you got an excellent guru in him - take him as an example!

Happy Birthday Amitabh. Lets hope more people follow your example by being vegetarian. India has the best vegetarian food in the world so there is no reason to be a part in this cruel industry of producing meat.

I was joking about Shar Rukh Khan just to piss Stephen Colbert off.

I know cows are sacred in India, and I respect that. Here in Puerto Rico, they ain't! Come to Ray-O, delicious steak!

By the way, now that someone brought up hunting, I'd like to take a moment to talk about it. I totally do not condone shooting endangered animals like tigers or bears. However, ungulates and rabbits (animals that those carnivores would eat) are completely fine to eat.

Now some of you say that humans are the only animals who hunt for sport... I'm about to prove you wrong, and the answer lies in many homes across the world. That's right. I'm talking about your domestic cats. Mousing is simple sport to them. So go out and hunt if you want, but stay away from the big scary animals.

happy birthday!

it's so great to see everyone is making a change!

It's even better that someone who is a celebrity doesn't indulge in cruelty but does the RIGHT thing and advocate animal rights!

Captain,
Hunting and poaching are not the same thing.

Posted by: Christopher Cochran MD | October 15, 2007 05:03 PM

Cochran's right.

Poaching is illegally shooting a tiger or an elephant. A majestic, endangered animal that needs to be protected.

Deer, on the other hand, are abundant. They're gonna be predated on anyway, so there's no reason that we shouldn't join the party.

Like I said, humans are not the only ones who hunt for sport. Cats hunt mice for sport, too.

Christopher Cochran,
i know but in most indian regions hunting is forbidden! just now they had a great scandal because of actor salman khan supposed to have hunted endangered species! this happened in the regions of bishnoi where any kind of hunting is not tolerated!

Posted by: captain nemo | October 16, 2007 03:39 PM

to the folks uphere:
in india hunting is strictly forbidden!

Posted by: allegro | October 16, 2007 05:07 PM

Yeah, Ray-O, but we're supposedly more intelligent, and hopefully ethical, than cats. But please don't use sport and hunting in the same sentence.

Borrowed from the net:

"Other hunters explain that hunting is a sport they take part in. Sport??? Let's compare it to my favourite sport. Hockey - two teams; equal members per team with equal equipment; set rules that all are aware of. Hunting - hunters vs. animals; guns, crossbows, etc. vs. no equipment; the hunters set the rules and the animals aren't even aware there's a game on! If you don't like my hockey analogy, try the same thing with any other sport...you'll see my point."

Best thing about Amitabh Bachchan is that he is very sincere and dedicated to his acting. I really like this great personality.
