It's that time again, folks, where we pick out one researcher from a pool of the most cold-hearted animal abusers in the business who has distinguished himself over his colleagues with an unswerving dedication to senseless cruelty and bad science. The voter turnout for last week was abysmal, since most commenters were so disgusted that they couldn't choose between the two candidates, but the show must go on—and last week's winner (by a hair) was UConn's David Waitzman, who got a last-minute boost in the voting after his sick practices were outed on the front page of his own University's newspaper.

Now it's time to reach for those barf bags and hit the ballots, because we've got a tight head-to-head battle this week between a cat-torturer and a man who has killed almost every kind of animal in his 30-year career. Drum roll, please …

Moshe's medium is cats, and his experiment of choice involves cutting open their backs down to their spinal cords in order to attach "S" hooks to their spinal ligaments. A whistleblower at the university recently contacted PETA to inform us that the drug the cats were being given as an anesthetic for these barbaric experiments did not appear to be effective and that the cats were still moving and struggling after the drug was administered. You can learn more about Moshe's lengthy career working with house cats here.

Thomas Langfitt, UPenn (deceased).

When the Philadelphia College of Physicians announced their decision to endow a chair in honor of the notorious Thomas Langfitt this year, animal lovers everywhere were horrified. Mr. Langfitt spent three decades "studying" trauma by smashing the heads and bodies of live dogs, pigs, monkeys, and other animals, and ultimately had his funding cut off when he repeatedly delivered crippling blows to the heads of baboons at UPenn, following PETA's release of video footage taken by the experimenters themselves, in which they ridiculed the primates and appeared to take pleasure in inflicting pain on them. You can read our letter to the group here. Langfitt is dead now. Let's make sure his legacy dies with him.

That's all for now. Don't forget to vote, and stay tuned next week,* when we'll be talking about some folks who really don't like mice.

*The PETA Files cannot guarantee that they will remember to do this next week.

Thomas Langfitt has my vote.
What he did was nothing less than criminal.
They are all sick and evil.
But he gets my vote...

When people wonder what kind of people were able to commit the atrocities of the Nazi concentration camps, I say people like these. Everyone should read Eternal Treblinka. It has been one of the most eye opening books that I've read besides Animal Liberation. A lot of the people Hitler recruited to kill & experiment on Jews in camps were researchers who had a history of animal research. These people take pleasure in torturing animals. They would gladly do the same to people if they had the chance.

moshe solomonow has my vote as these experiments are still taking place - will barbarity never cease?

Posted by: reed | September 16, 2007 02:40 AM

They are both sick bastards. And so is everyone who works in their labs, and so are all of their family members and neighbors--anyone who knows what "researchers" do for a living and do nothing to stop them. How can someone live in a house with researchers, eat dinner with them and carry on a normal life and do nothing to stop this??? Anyone who knows this animal abuse is happening and does not try to stop it is as guilty as the perpetrators.

I think all vivisectors are totally sick in the head!

Felix the monkey is dead! :( Oxford Uni killed him! Hate them! Wouldn't go there if you paid me when I go to uni in a while!

Langfitt has my vote.

Unfortunately this horrifying truth doesn't make it to the General Public. If I weren't an advocate for animal rights and a member to these organizations, I would never know the truth either.Don't just tell us these stories and give us a chance to vote on who gets the cruelty award, tell us what we can do and what you as an organization are doing to end this f@#$%^n bull s*^t!!!!

Posted by: Kristin Wilson | September 16, 2007 11:50 PM

Kristin Wilson I think your right what are Peta actually doing except a lot of chat.. I am seriously thinking of withdrawing my monthly donation., plus this site seem to be pulling all the controversial comments including mine., from past & present entries.

Posted by: keith | September 17, 2007 10:33 AM

And again I have no word for both of these "men."

My vote goes to Langfitt.

Posted by: Jaclyn | September 17, 2007 12:01 PM

moshe solomonow has my vote for the same reason as someone else said... the abuse is still happening. This is totally disgusting!

The sad / sick part is after viewing the last segment and this segment, I noticed these people do not look bad. I wish people had to wear signs or masks so everyone would see how truly nasty they are!

Posted by: Tammy | September 17, 2007 12:23 PM

First: I'm going to go home and hold my cat.
Second: How can you decide between evil and evil? Can there be a tie for the most deplorable human? These two (and others like them) are finding ways to commit crimes again humanity without ever directly harming a human; I'm disgusted by their mockery of science. That is not medicine: it's barbarism and they are not humans: they are viral infections.

Posted by: Jim | September 17, 2007 12:35 PM

Vivisectors are Nazis in white coats for the other animals. They are sub-human violent pyschopaths. The government and schools do an excellent job keeping this information from the average person, even most teachers do not know of this horror. Of, course, that is precisely why these labs are closed to the public. But I hear the cries and know the torment of these poor creatures!

Posted by: Ana | September 17, 2007 12:37 PM

i think we should do to them what they do to animals :(

Posted by: lindsay age 16 | September 17, 2007 03:36 PM

Langfitt. God, why wasn't he charged of felony? I honestly do not see any difference between a pet dog and a lab dog.

Posted by: Tonka rox my sox | September 17, 2007 05:41 PM

I definately vote for Langfitt. yes, Solomonow is still administering his "experiments", but at least someone blew the whistle on him. Langfitt is being honored?!?! the crookedness of that college's commitee should be a candidate for this week!!

Moshe Solomonow is a bioengineer working in orthopedics.Yep, a bad man that's helping keep your grandmother mobile and active and maybe you one day.

Thomas Langfitt;

"Dr. Langfitt - as a board member from 1979 and as chief executive officer from 1987 to 1994 - oversaw Pew's conversion from a family-run enterprise to the nation's fifth-largest foundation, one that championed such causes as childhood development, health care and the environment. Today, Pew has an endowment of $4.2 billion and ranks third in grant-making behind the Ford and W.K. Kellogg Foundations, with annual grants of more than $200 million. "

Dr. Thomas Langfitt was past-President and former Board member of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He previously served in leadership roles at the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Glenmede Trust Company. Prior to joining Pew, Dr. Langfitt was a neurosurgeon.

During his time at Pew, Dr. Langfitt became committed to removing barriers to services and information, particularly with regard to health care. Under his leadership, The College of Physicians of Philadelphia moved its consumer health program and resources online with PhillyHealthInfo.org. Dr. Langfitt believed the College’s mission of educating the public about health – as well as its neutrality – could foster a better relationship between patient and doctor and help to fix a broken health care system.
"He was a leader in America in neurosurgery," Sean Grady, head of neurosurgery at HUP, said yesterday. "He is the modern-day father in the treatment of traumatic brain injury."
Dr. Langfitt, who moved to Wynnewood in the mid-1980s, was vice president of Penn's health affairs from 1974 to 1987, overseeing the hospital as well as the medical, dental, nursing and veterinary schools

What the heck!!! Both are sick bustards who will pay the price when these creatures of God reincarnate! My first time on this Blog, I'm sorry i've waited so long but nothing pisses me off more then a vivisectors!! Your times coming, Moshe Solomonow.

Well Done '' Gina '' for the stance on not wanting to further your education at Oxford., perhaps you can spread the word among your friends. Was that monster '' Tipu '' responsible for the useless death of felix ?

Hi Keith, nothing personal. We've been losing comments on this and a couple of other entries recently due to a glitch in the movable type blog publisher. Trying to get them back now or at least make sure it doesn't happen again.

And to both Kristin and Keith, you can rest assured that we are all working overtime to get these experiments stopped. Exposing the experimenters themselves on our site is just one small part of the work that we are doing to end vivisection forever, including giving grants to individuals who develop humane alternatives to animal testing, submitting shareholder resolutions and working with corporations to eliminate or reduce their animal-testing programs, monitoring new requests to organizations like the EPA for animal tests and submitting alternative methods, going undercover into animal labs, working with legislators to introduce animal-friendly laws that will reduce testing, organizing consumer boycotts of companies that have egregious animal-experimentation policies, raising awareness about buying cruelty-free products, working with the USDA and other government agencies to issue penalties to experimenters who violate the animal welfare act, and pushing countless companies to get rid of their animal testing programs entirely. In just the past year, we have convinced PepsiCo, Coca Cola, and POM Wonderful to drop their testing programs, and we are currently working with a number of other major corporations to do the same.

You can learn more about what we are doing on a daily basis to end animal experimentation at StopAnimalTests.com, and for more information about making changes in your own lives to support companies that do not test on animals, please visit CaringConsumer.com.

M-ars:
your comment doesn't impress me at all! i talked to this kind of rascals personally and they don't have anything positive at hand - this is all theoretical blinding for misguided stupid folks! i don't want to enter into details again and again - i did it before - so bring me just one proof that they brought a life back!!!

Posted by: RAGE AGAINST RASCALS | September 18, 2007 04:21 PM

It's so hard to choose who is the more evil. I'll have to vote for Moshe Solomonow since sadly he's still alive. May all these vivisectors have to live in painful agony, a hundred times more excruciating pain that what they put animals through!

Posted by: Sally Tully-Figueroa | September 18, 2007 04:36 PM

Thanks Jack for the explanations. But please understand I have been involved in '' Animal Welfare ''issues for yonks.. long before Peta came on the scene. And sadly see no end in sight.

Any of you who think that animal testing is necessary and/or helpful should read "Sacred Cows and Golden Geese".

This book is not about animal rights, it is about science, and how animal testing has not only been unhelpful to HUMANS, it has actually harmed astounding numbers of HUMANS. It has also delayed effective treatments that could have actually saved lives. There are no instances where animal testing actually contributed to cures or treatments - the biggest contribution has been from clinical observation of HUMANS and autopsy studies. Animal tests have mainly been done AFTER a particular treatment shows promise, to "prove" that the treatment will be safe for humans.

Just read up on the Thalidomide situation - it is absolutely disgusting that they knew for years and years that Thalidomide was responsible for tens of thousands of babies born with birth defects, however they continued to prescribe this drug to pregnant women because they could not reproduce the same birth defects in ANY non-human animal, and therefore kept deeming the drug to be safe! More people in the US die every year due to using legal medication that has been declared "safe", compared to the number of deaths due to illegal drug use.

The reason that testing continues is because of the HUGE $$$$$$$ that the pharmaceutical industry gains (and the industries that gain from continued need for animal cages, etc, etc).

This book uncovers things that are just unbelievable. It is not financed by animal rights groups of any sort.

Back from what or where?

Posted by: Mars | September 18, 2007 08:56 PM

Jack, I sure learned my lesson and will never again post a message when I'm angry because it came off wrong. I was very upset when I learned about the atrocities that are going on in these animal experiment laboratories. I'm not mad at PETA...I Love Peta and I'm a proud supporter! I simply wish the General Public could hear these stories too. I know PETA is doing the best they can to see that the word gets out and I do my best with the help of PETA to get the word out too. And once again, I'm sorry that my post came off wrong. I truly believe PETA is the best thing that ever happened to animals. I sincerely mean that and highly reccomend supporting them.

Sure. Now, do you know of any living thing that will not die?
