As if anyone needs another reason to not buy Australian wool, a damning new report about live export was just released. The report found, among other things, that on one recent voyage from Tasmania to the Middle East, many of the sheep loaded didn’t even meet the extremely low minimum export standards, that many sheep developed the condition “pink eye” during the voyage, and that about 1,600 out of the 75,000 sheep aboard died on the four week voyage.

The worst part is that the sheep who died en route may have been the lucky ones, as in the Muslim nations of North Africa and the Middle East, ritual slaughter is exempt from humane slaughter regulations. Some sheep are slaughtered en masse in lots, while others are taken home, often in the trunks of cars, and slaughtered individually by the purchasers.

If you need a little background info on the whole live export thing, click here. And please, if you haven’t done so already, join actor Joaquin Phoenix in pressuring Oz Ag Minister Peter McGauran to put an end to this horrible abuse.

It breaks my heart.

Muslims are disgusting, there method of killing is barbaric and primitive.

Howver the Ozies are nont the better, sending off these poor creatures to their miserable deaths. Can't the greedy bunch find a more humane livelihood?

It is a sad world we live in. Only humans are capable of causing so much misery to animals. I really hope the slaughterers in that video get what is coming to them when their time is up.

It is shocking to think in the 21st Century, this crap is going on. God help the poor animals.

Reading this makes me depressed. Sheep are so docile and sweet and have distinctive personalities. And yes, I have spent time with sheep for years! Of course to others it's all about $$$$$$$ dollars, not morality or compassion. Money in the bank while being morally bankrupt is the norm; the economy here in the USA and in other nations is based on the backs of the other animals. Horrible!

GO VEGAN !!!!!!!!

You're being too kind in this statement. It's knowing that it's going to be CENTURIES till the human race realizes what their doing to animals in general, that any real progress is going to be done to end this behavior. Every nation on earth are guilty of atrocities to animals, so much that it makes me ashamed that I'm a human being. And knowing that I share any genetic code with these people makes me sick.

"Can't the greedy bunch find a more humane livelihood?"

It makes me ashamed to live in this country. What's worse is that if we tell the truth about the sheep industry, we get sued (like PETA did, although the wool industry lost that battle to PETA, thank goodness - bless you guys). The government is even further restricting free speech, by changing laws so that anyone who speaks out against this industry (and others like it) can be prosecuted by the ACCC. It's disgusting - there is no free speech in Australia.

Rhilo, you are right, Muslims are disgusting. They show no mercy for anything or anyone. The majority fall below the standards of what you would call "compassionate human beings". I knew when I began watching them videos that them poor animals were going to be in hell the last moments they lived and I was right. I suppose if you look at what they do to each other, it would be naive to presume they don't treat animals the same way. They have no respect or care for anything else but themselves as demonstrated in them video clips. I just hope the animals went into shock and were not fully aware of what was happening to them before they died. If I had the power, I would round up all fellow animal lovers, get a plane over there and rescue every last animal there before any more animal's blood was shed. It drives me mad that humans are capable of such depravity and have no problem in discarding animals when they have taken what they want from them. I think the Aussies seriously need to have a look at what is going on and do something about it. Something tells me, if enough of them watched them horrifying video clips, drastic action would be taken. Anyone that does not care or who thinks the way these animals are treated is fair, is not fit to be called human in my books.

this is an absolutely horrible and intolerable scenario and it happens by millions and millions all over the world! also in france the muslims slaughter in their backyards in the same way! and a famous swiss animal protector - erwin kessler - was fighting against kosher slaughtering in switzerland when they accused him of racism and threw him into prison, arguing that religious tolerance has to go before animal rights! here we are standing almost helpless in front of an iron giant, trampling every rightous animal protector with his giant filthy feet! i put all my confidence into PETA and other great animal rights organizations to face up squarely to these barbarians - always taking into consideration that the great part of near east population are deeply ankered in analphabetism and that their intelligentsia is also against these awful slaughter methods but can't do anything. these primitive folks take the argument of racism as a shield for to commit their hideous inhumane crimes against the animal kingdom! but it has nothing to do with racism because every intelligent person in this world understands quickly! but there are some people in the respective governments who don't want to understand because of some special interests - hence are doing everything to hinder the animal protector to do the necessary humane step! individual persons can't do anything but great organizations like peta could at least try! it's so sad and i'm so angry about this primitive barbarian sleeping deaf world! this kind of people are still living in a predator conscience! they feel like a ferocious beast towards it's prey! they don't understand the beauty of life! strange! - we could have paradise but this is hell on earth!

don't seem to be getting my comments through. I put a lot of time into the wool post and I couldn't help it if it made PETA look stupid. I was merely answering the points you brought up.
Retrospectively removing a post is a new low.

Hi Rojo, nothing personal. We've been losing comments on this and a couple of other entries recently due to a glitch in the movable type blog publisher. Trying to get them back now or at least make sure it doesn't happen again.

Thanks Jack, appreciate your response. I don't expect you to be able to process all posts particularly on busy threads, but was disappointed to have one apparently removed on breast feeding. The benefits of breast feeding and early childhood nutrition cannot be underestimated.
Apologies for impatience Jack, you do run a great forum.

call me crazy, but i could barely finish the video of sheep being slaughtered, i cried like a baby. you would think that in the year 2007, people in all countries would realize that there are much more effective and humane ways of slaughtering animals? (even though i don't think animals should be slaughtered for any reason.) these muslims don't care about treating other people humanely, what makes us think that they are going to adopt humane ways toward the animals? maybe we need to ship a couple of them to another country, throw them around a little, and show them what it is like to be sacrificed the way they do these poor sheep! i could go on for days about this behavior...thank god for peta!

Sick people who seem to feel it's their God given right to abuse such gentle souls.Wonder what would happen to them if it was humans they were doing this to, opps they already are!

Posted by: Carla | September 19, 2007 05:12 PM

kate, I agree, we need to teach these people how important it is to slay the animals quickly and painlessly.
The problem seems to be that they often don't value human life, let alone those of animals.

Posted by: rojo | September 20, 2007 04:00 AM

Kate I really liked your message. You are so right. When I watched the video of the poor sheep, it reminded me of HELL ON EARTH. I think you are right, we should get all them dirty Muslims and throw them all together into a big pit and let them destroy each other. It is like they are possessed by a demon, having no compassion or respect for animals, truly the work of Satan.

Muslims are barbarians?
Is that just a little bit racist?

Posted by: Mith | September 20, 2007 07:40 PM

It's one thing to say that exporting for slaughter is inhumane and unnecessarily cruel, but it's another to direct insults and baseless claims at people. To those who have called Muslims (and there are Muslims all over the world) 'disgusting', 'barbaric' and 'dirty', and think Muslims don't 'value human life' are making atrocious generalisations. Insulting someone in reference to their religious beliefs is truly disgusting.

It's moronic to state that Muslims are primitive for their methods of killing, or the put the blame purely on them. Australia has the power to enforce our regulations on any meat products being exported from our country, but they do not because it is not profitable.

The moderators for this blog should be doing their job by deleting any e-mail which is both insulting and off-the-point.
