Is it possible for the biggest name in burlesque, Dita Von Teese, to get any sexier? She’s already the spokesperson for MAC Cosmetics Viva Glam campaign, is the face of Frederick’s of Hollywood’s upcoming holiday catalog, and has graced the cover of Playboy, Harpers Bazaar, and Elle. In fact, I just looked up the word “sexy” on Wikipedia and there is no definition, just her picture.
For those of you who thought Dita couldn’t get any sexier, think again. She is lending her voice, among other things, to our new ABC campaign. Dita urges fans to "bone up" on their ABCs and, if they are considering adding a dog or a cat to the family, to adopt from a local animal shelter and be sure to get their new family member spayed or neutered.
And here are some exclusive behind-the-scenes images and video from the launch of the ad.

I fail to see how you can get any actual serious support for your cause when you advertise with marketing techniques that have NOTHING to do with what it is that you are trying to portray in the name of PETA. If you had nothing but the pictures, one would be inclined to think it was an advertising for stockings. What a laugh......

Now there is no doubt about it: PETA got all the heaven's blessings: they are gifted in attracting the most striking beauties of this planet: Alicia Silverstone, Joanna Krupa, Julie Christie, Joss Stone, Pamela Anderson, Alyssa Milano, Sadie Frost, Stella McCartney, Roselyn Sanchez, Jamelia, Aditi Govritikar, Yana Gupta, Shilpa Shetty, Jenna Jameson, Kim Basinger, Christy Turlington and so on... and now: Dita von Teese! This shining, sizzling personality - i just had a look at her on exposay.com - is a classical beauty in the style and tradition of Elizabeth Taylor and Sherilyn Fenn! Astonishing - indeed!

to be sexy you don't have to be nude you can be fully clothed and still be just as sexy. I have never had your stuff and I don't plan to, but I think that if you stop nude ads you would most likely get more people. and being sexy and having a great body is not a bad thing but having a nude ad on tv I do not think thats right.

Tastefully done. Many companies use sex appeal to sell everything from Beer to Diet plans. Way to grab the attention of everyday joes! Keep it sexy!!

An all "natural" beauty!

Gorgeous! I love Dita!

She is so pretty. I am very shocked that she made an ad with PETA. That probably explains why she left Manson, he has to many animal "trophies". She is pretty indeed.

Seriously, this makes me sick. It seems as though PETA will do anything for a bit of publicity. Dita von Teese is widely and hugely known as being a big fan of wearing fur as we all know. She even stated in one of her interviews, that she thinks fur is elegant and it is something she loves and can absolutely cannot live without. Now, how can a charity who claims to be in support of people for the ethical treatment of animals be in favour of having the new face of their advertising campaign of someone who obviously does not stand for the ethical treatment of animals?
PETA, you have prostituted yourself to the worst means possible, and you have also just lost one supporter, if not many more to follow, a true and active vegan, who actually cares about ethical issues regarding animals. But I'm sure thats no bother, because the exploitation of your false values seem to be more important than the message you claim to be putting across.
Hypocrisy is the one reason people don't take us seriously, and you have just fed people more hypocritical messages by honouring someone who not just goes against what we believe in, but also openly dismisses everything we stand for.
PETA means nothing to me now and I am very sorry to say that.
I wish it wasn't about publicity and celebrities for you, but the real issue: that millions of animals are dying every second for no other reason than our selfishness, and you have seem to forgotten that. I will leave you to your fancy ads and naked celebrities, they seem to grab more attention anyways, eh?
On a final note: I bite my thumb at thee, for thou hath sinned against thyself.

Patricia,
It has right on the billboard about animal birth control. Unfortunately in this day and age you HAVE to use cheeky marketing tools; but clearly they work...people ARE talking..and people WILL Check out PETA when they see advertisements like this..well done PETA

Oh Dita, now I know why I've had you as my background on my laptop all this time ...

This is the same Dita Von Teese who dedicates a full page to the wearing of fur in her book 'Fetish and The Art Of The Teese' ????
Sample quote:
"Who wouldn't love the opportunity to don a cuff of mink or to wrap a luscious stole of fox around her shoulders on a chilly day".
Are PETA sleeping with the enemy now ?

Mike
Good point, I agree.

Hi Kat,
As I mentioned on another Dita post:
I know that Dita has been seen in fur in the past, but here are our thoughts on this issue: We’ll often work with a celebrity on an issue that they feel comfortable supporting, whether its promoting spaying/neutering or speaking out against products tested on animals. The celebrity may not be an animal rights activist, but their contribution to any of our campaigns is appreciated and we like to commend them for taking a step in the right direction. We have worked with a long list of former fur wearers who eventually had a change of heart about wearing real fur, including Mary Tyler Moore, Anna Nicole Smith, Martha Stewart and Christy Turlington. Â
Often, a celebrity gets involved with one issue and then learns more about other issues over time. For example, Alicia Silverstone wasn’t a vegetarian when we first began working with her. Now, she’s a strict vegan and talks about her vegan diet and animal rights in just about every interview. Making the transition to a vegan lifestyle is a gradual process, and we’re happy to work with celebrities on even the most introductory levels. We hope that eventually they'll make the transition, as many others have. Â

I love so much of Dita's work and really enjoyed an hour long chat with her at House of Blues in Cleveland. I am vegan and will not keep or purchase anything of hers where she is in fur.
It is initially hard to swallow this campaign but I can see both sides. I hope only good comes of it all.

oh my god! that's perfect!

This ad is terrible...........It should show animals, not half naked women. And giving away prizes such as Playboy, cosmetics and Fredericks of Hollywood. Why not animal needs such as food, litter boxes, a chance to get free shot for a year, etc. I'm really disappointed with PETA, and wonder who is sleeping on the job............ do you really help the animals? I wonder.

Geez PETA, I am normally one to support you for your ads and your campaigns regardless how bizarre they can be but I'm suprisingly disappointed in this one. Especially when I'm trying to teach my young daughter how a womans physical assests are too exploited by media, that this isn't right. I'll continue to support the work you do for animal rights but this ad was just unexpected and sad.

I understand that this is not an anti-fur campaign and Dita is simply promoting getting your pets spayed or neutered, but it's still shocking nonetheless to see Dita involved with PETA. She wears and advocates real fur! PETA's hypocrisy is amazing. It seems they are willing to overlook this, something they are most known for (anti-fur), and hire someone simply because she is hot right now. It's all rather disgusting. I like Dita and I used to admire PETA, but c'mon... this is just too much.

Dita is great but can u explain why u are using a fur loving icon to help support animal cruelty?am i missing something here?
Posted by: milene | October 12, 2007 10:16 AM
I am a fan of Dita and a long-standing supporter of PETA, however I'm disappointed in both. My main objection to Dita is her wearing fur and posing with dead animals (such as stuffed bears and lion rugs). Thus, why PETA would choose her as a spokesperson is ludicrous. Further, sexualizing this crucial issue only undermines its importance. Dita and PETA both failed here.

I am a very "modern" woman who stand up against exploitation of woman's body. I don't find it appropriate to use a semi nude woman to promote a cause for animals.
Part of the earnings of my writings goes to PETA. I am stopping that.

I agree with Marisela on Sept 25. The hypocracy PETA has shown in "selling out" and using a well known hater of animals (ie Dita) to promote de-sexing is pathetic. As an Australian I can really say that it seems PETA obviously is American in your Capitalistic approach to end animal cruelty. Money isn't everything. And neither is using famous people who contradict your (supposed) philosophy.

Thank you PETA, for reaching beyond the myopic vision of some of your supporters. I eat meat, dairy, fish, offal and honey; I wear wool, silk, leather, suede and fur. I am everything that many of your members loves to loathe. Yet it disgusts me that so-called "animal lovers" choose to keep animals as pets without taking responsiblity for them. I think my opinion is valid even though I am a Heretic concerning animal rights. Before Dita's campaign, I thought PETA were a pack of whining, anaemic ninnies who should be more concerned with human suffering than worrying about poor little bunnies and whether shearing sheep traumatises them. Thanks to Dita's ABC, PETA and I now have a point of common understanding. It's not much, but it's a start.
Signed
Animal Eater, Wearer & Lover

I agree with Jacqueline. I love meat but love animals at the same time. While I don't wear fur, I understand what Dita is doing. I normally can't stand PETA and at first was disappointed when hearing Dita is a spokesperson for them. Then I found out she was standing up for spaying and neutering and that ALONE. PETA members need to stop whining and just be happy that they're getting noticed...Even by PETA haters like me. She's not a spokesperson for PETA and EVERYTHING it stands for, just for ABC. It isn't like PETA requires you to be a mindless drone to advertise for them.

I'm wondering why is that good: sexualizing animal protection stuff. The video itself is sensless, it has nothing to do with the animal problem reality, but her decorativity. She says, it isn't included in her contract, that she shouldn't wear fur; come on, a holyWoodian needs contract to be consequent and ethical? Ridiculous.
