Vick Protests in New York City

About an hour ago, PETA campaigners and activists converged on NFL HQ in New York to urge Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL to suspend Michael Vick in light of his recent indictment for alleged involvement in the horrific cruelty associated with dogfighting—including allegations that he was killing dogs by hanging, slamming them to the ground, drowning, and electrocuting them. Surrounded by reporters and TV news crews, more than 75 activists lined the streets in front of the NFL building, holding signs reading “NFL: Sack Vick,” handing out stickers and leaflets to passersby, and making it abundantly clear—just in case Goodell hasn’t figured it out yet—that the NFL’s weak response to Vick’s case is unacceptable.

The massive turnout at this demonstration should be indication enough to Goodell that his decision to allow Vick to play in spite of these disturbing charges is going to be a major PR headache for the NFL, to say the least. Here’s what PETA President Ingrid Newkirk had to say about the NFL’s “wait and see” attitude in a statement to the media yesterday:
“Forget that unless space aliens were on Vick's property putting up an invisibility shield, it is impossible that Vick didn't know (let alone sponsor a fighting dog), that the house he built included designs for dog training facilities and that his relatives were fighting, kenneling, training, housing training equipment, and killing dogs there. There was a time when people under fire for corruption let alone criminal cruelty, resigned. That honorable moment has passed because of the Almighty Dollar. If he won't do the right thing by stepping down until this is resolved (and I'll put a sporting bet on his conviction), the NFL should suspend him. Is the new America only about money or do we still cling to some values? In the courts he may be innocent until proven guilty, and that's fair and fine, but in professional or political life, we have to have a higher standard than "hey, keep raking it in until we see if he gets off.”

The protest was covered on ESPN, and you can watch an interview with PETA’s own Dan Shannon that took place during the demonstration here.
I’ll let you know as soon as there’s more news, but in the meantime, you may want to get your very own “Sack Vick” T-shirt. Love it.

Kudos to all of the organizers/protestors & to the great PETA organizers for quick action-way to really send the message!
Everyone,
Please also CALL NIKE- as was mentioned before-they are keeping the Michael Vick lines (clothing) and other shoes of his in their stores was their decision, they have halted the new shoe, but let them know that you will boycott all Nike products, if they don't pull all Vick merchandise and if they proceed with releasing the shoe! We've got to send a clear message to his sponsors! They aren't taking enough action.
Nike's HQ # is: 800-344-6453
News Release:
Vick's Troubles Suspend Release of Nike Product
ATLANTA - There are indications that Michael Vick's legal troubles could produce some financial consequences.
Nike has suspended the release of its latest product line named after the Atlanta Falcons quarterback, who is to be arraigned next week on federal charges of sponsoring a dogfighting operation.
Nike has told retailers it will not release a fifth signature shoe, the Air Zoom Vick V, this summer. A company spokesman says the four shoe products and three shirts that currently bear Vick's name will remain in stores.
While Nike still has a standing contract with Vick, the company has declined to speculate on its future with him.
Also, Senator Byrd of West Virgina, sent out a strong message about dogfighting this week-call or e-mail his office, and thank him for taking a stance publically on it. Our government officials need to know that we support them, when they stand up to animal cruelty!

Absolutely DISGUSTING of the NFL to keep this worthless animal killer on a team.

Vick can not pass a football well but he surely can pass herpes.

Wish I could join you. I'm there in spirit, as are my dogs. Great job with Nike...I'm writing letters, being selective in products I purchase and following your other suggestions. I can't believe there's still discussions on ESPN threads about football stats and what losing Vick would do to football. Who cares? I wouldn't be allowed to wag my middle finger at work and be a liability AND get paid to stay home! It's a GAME, but I'm preaching to the choir.

These people make me cry!! YOU ARE AMAZING!! My cats and I are there in spirit too!
Posted by: JenK | July 20, 2007 02:58 PM
I think that we should pin Vick in a steel cage match to the death against Chuck Norris! But serously, if Paris Hilton can serve for being DUI, Vick should serve for being a ruthless individual. Had I done that, I would have lost my job, not been suspended.

POST your complaints on the yahoo financial message board.
Ensure investors are exposed to this outrage.
Let Nike feel some pain as their stock crumbles in the next months.

After spending 3 days on the internet with sponsors of Vick, I took a new tact. I wrote Sen Byrd and expressed my gratitude of his statement on the floor of Congress. I also wrote the Senators from Georgia and Virgina, and asked them why we haven't heard their comments. Can't hurt! Might help!

Is there a list of Vick sponsors to contact? I can't find it anywhere. All I know is Nike, Powerade, Hasbro and Rawlings. There has to be more, or a "formal" list.

awesome!! keep up the fight -I have a sense that Vick is not alone with NFL and other sports stars who are involved in this practice. See Clinton Portis's comments regarding Vick - typical big athlete macho response. Light a fire - I am a long time sports fan - lets clean this up

I am a hunter but the actions of Vick are very wrong. I know this will never make it on your thread but i have to let it be known that not hunters are cruel.

I was able to make the protest in NYC as I live here. About 100 people showed up + 4 dogs (including a Pit bull named "Cuddles" who I hugged) + a cat. For the full hour we chanted "sack Vick" (and other ones as well). We wore a #7 sticker with a slash through it on our tops and held different signs available with the message to "sack vick", a #7 with a slash through it, and a large color photo of an abused pit bull dog (which I carried). It felt great being with people who really cared and that we made our presence felt. I did see us on ESPN about 1:40 PM.
The tortured dogs have a voice!!!
BTW, I see myself in one of the photos on this blog---that's great!

Here's an argument you can use against the "let's let due process play out" excuse to do nothing:
Due process is a legal term that is valid in a court of law, but not the court of public opinion. Due process means that an American citizen cannot be deprived of his property, liberty or life without his day in court. There is no guarantee anywhere in the Constitution that gives an American the right to have a job. We are not asking the NFL or Arthur Blank to confiscate Michael Vick's property, we're not asking them to imprison Michael Vick, and -- as much as we'd like to -- we're not asking them to kill Michael Vick. All we are asking is that they suspend/fire Michael Vick."
Another argument: Every time Michael Vick plays, the NFL and the Atlanta Falcons will be forcing children to cheer for a man who is responsible (either personally or via financing and encouragement) of the torture of animals. What does this teach children? That money matters more than humanity. Is that really a value that we want our children to hold dear?"
I am taking off work and will be in Atlanta at the end of next week. ANY PETA PROTESTORS WANT TO JOIN ME AT THE ATLANTA FALCON TRAINING CAMP OR THE ARTHUR M. BLANK FAMILY FOUNDATION OFFICES?

I love you guys! Keep it up! I'm buying the shirt. The more merchandise you get on there...the more money you can raise to fight this. I'll buy it and I now plenty more who will, too! Bring us bumper stickers!

Amazing to me that someone would thank Sen Byrd for his comments when this man is a Klansmen (no such thing as an EX). Whether or not Mike Vick is PROVEN guilty or not guilty I am amazed at this group who would toot HUMANITY to animals but will not stand up for justice for all PEOPLE. And hunting is just as INHUMANE unless it is for SURVIVAL. Wow
Posted by: Michelle | July 20, 2007 04:45 PM
It makes me want to cry the abuse those dogs suffer. I would hope that at some point this event would shed some light on the true evilness of dogfighting. It is not the dogs but the people!!!
Posted by: liz | July 20, 2007 04:45 PM
Sorry, "Hunter", nice sentiment, I am glad you realize the obsenity of dog fighting, but by definition all hunting is cruel.
Posted by: nan mcclain | July 20, 2007 04:46 PM
Hunter Mark
Hunting is intrinsically cruel, violent and it kills animals.
Cross
Those children were there with their parents and had asked to go to the protest first before going to the beach. As far as these children being young, well so are Vick's fans. Many of Vick's fans are children, what a great role model, huh??? Ask Vick about his young fans and the example he sets for them.

Can someone help me? I'm having trouble understanding something here.
How is it that the dogfighting post had recieved over 300 comments while the story about the beagles shipped to Japan to be tortured only got 14?
Posted by: Maya | July 20, 2007 05:01 PM
I agree that dog fighting is both cruel and inhumane to animals. To fight animals for human pleasure is by no means acceptable behavior. Under the Constitution of the US however and indictment is not a conviction, and whether we like it or not, Michael Vick deserves his day in court.
I am in no means defending him, and in fact as an Atlanta resident I have never been a fan of his, he is both pompous and arrogant. But no matter who he is and what he has been charged with, in this country, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Far too many people have lost site of that when it comes to high profile cases in this country, and in this case, so has PETA.

When is the NFL going to address the fact that this illegal business was bringing in millions of dollars of UNTAXED income every year?
Vick was cheating every citizen of this country
and just spitting on us all, especially the poor
Posted by: kelly | July 20, 2007 05:46 PM
Can't be in NYC (I live in NC) to help get the message to the NFL but thanks so much to all who are participating in the protests! Know that there are many of us standing with you in spirit. There's no reason to wait for the legal process to wrap up before getting Vick away from the sport. Vick has said he'll be found not guilty, but he has never once, to my knowledge, expressed any concerns or distress over dog fighting and the horrible stuff that goes with it. He is pretty clearly part of a culture that isn't repulsed by cruelty to dogs and the NFL needs to send a very clear message to people like him and Clinton Portis that this kind of psychopathic, disgusting activity is not OK.

Just found out via FoxNews, Mass. Senator John Kerry wrote to the NFL requesting Vick be suspended. Please write his office to say thank you, and certainly write West Va. Senator Byrd, to thank him for his impassioned speach on the floor of the Senate against animal brutality. He was magnificent!

Wish I could have been there! God Bless all of you wonderful people who took the time to stand up and fight for all those beautiful, innocent animals that have been tortured. For Pam in Atlanta...that is awesome..best of luck on your protest at their training camp. Hope it sends a clear message to that sorry excuse and waste of space Vick. May Karma come to bite him the A**. Maybe if we are lucky he will get sacked and paralyzed and gets a taste of what it feels like to suffer!!!!

Your organization is abusing the right of free speech. Vick has not been prosecuted. What if he is found not guilty? This is just like the Duke case. Those young men were absolutely ridiculed by public activists such as yourselves. You are just using this case as a public platform to remind Americans that you still exist, much like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton in the Duke case. What you are doing is completely ridiculous. I understand your organizations love for animals, but when did animal rights supercede the rights of a person. I am in no way condoning dog fighting. It is cruel and any person with a heart wouldn't take part. That still doesn't give you the right to start a witch hunt.

i had the same thoughts before - if everybody would stand up in the same way and for example go to protest in front of slaughter houses or laboratories like this mass here against these horrible dog fightings - i think within short time we would overcome! important reflection!!!
Posted by: silent tongue | July 20, 2007 07:24 PM
Hello.
I am a dog lover. The allegations against Mr. Vick are indeed horrid. However, I am ALSO an AMERICAN, and the long history of our nation states "innocent til proven guilty". That was designed to prevent the condemnation we see today, in cases like this.
As by LAW Mr. Vick is presumed innocent, I see no reason why he should be sacked from the NFL. Those of YOU who dont wish to see him dont have to.
Posted by: Susan | July 20, 2007 07:31 PM
Arthur Blank is the point man. He is the owner of the Atlanta Falcons. He, alone, has the authority but not the will to pull Vick's contract.
His phone is 404-367-2100. Email: grantinquiries@ambfo.com

To the person who wrote:"to protest in front of slaughter houses or laboratories like this mass here against these horrible dog fightings - i think within short time we would overcome!"
I totally agree...but there has to be a starting point.
This is SO high-profile that it will catch a lot of people's attention who would not otherwise think about animals. We have to keep the momentum going and we will move forward!!

PLEASE FILL OUT THE LETTER TO ROGER GOODELL (on the Peta site) and if possible personalize it. I let him know that as a 40 yr old and fan of the NFL since the age of 5 I will write off the NFL, all products and services related to it, and all sponsors and advertises if VICK plays one second of football prior to the outcome of the trial. He needs to be suspended immediately (with or without pay--I don't care) until final judgement. Police are suspended with pay until they are tried, this potential piece of filth needs to be suspended. I'm done with football if he steps foot on the field. Please email Goodell

I'm so thrilled that countless animal organizations are all over Michael Vick. If Michael learns anything from this, it'll be that it's a very bad day when you've got PETA against you. Talk about summoning the wrath. Too bad he won't get life in prison for all the murders he's committed. I hope this "no-nonsense" judge I've been hearing about will order him to not only serve some jail time, but pay heafty fines and be ordered to take part in an animal empathy program that maybe PETA or HSUS could organize. He needs to be turned around or he'll just do it again.

to mark and susan:
The Constitution does guarantee that a person charged with a crime will get his day in court before he is deprived of his property, his liberty or his life. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE CONSTITUTION THAT GUARANTEES THAT AMERICAN A CERTAIN JOB. There is a great difference between a prosecution brought by a district attorney running for reelection in a predominantly black district and a prosecution presented by the U.S. Federal Government that has been YEARS in the making. The feds have been watching Michael Vick for YEARS. They didn't take it to the grand jury until they were able to catch Michael Vick's cousin -- the one who lived in the house -- on a drug charge; they used the drug charge to get the cousin to start talking and turn over the corroborating evidence against Michael Vick. It's up to a jury to decide if Michael Vick will go to jail and how much fines he may pay -- but as Americans it is up to us to make sure that decency is upheld. And the thought of thousands of children being forced to cheer Michael Vick on the football field makes me sick. We have every right as Americans to demand that the NFL and the Atlanta Falcons exercise good faith and good judgment with respect to the American public and remove this man from football. A police officer who is accused of illegally shooting a suspect is automatically placed on leave, even before he is indicted. A school teacher who is accused of molesting a student is automatically suspended before an indictment. Why should Michael Vick be any different? We know from Pacman Jones' situation that the NFL isn't shy about suspending players for conduct unbecoming to the NFL. This may be the first incident for Michael Vick (as opposed to the so-called "pattern" of Pacman Jones), but this incident involves extreme cruelty and has been ongoing for six years. The Feds would be correct in charging Michael Vick under the RICO statutes. The NFL and the Atlanta Falcons owe it to America to do the right thing; unfortunately, they (and Nike) are following the money and refusing to take action. They are hiding behind the "due process" veil in order to justify doing nothing, but all they are really doing is trying to save their money. I think the electrocution, drowning, strangling, hanging and beating to death of dogs is a little more important than saving money. Michael Vick must be suspended/fired.
And all of you who say "don't rush to judgment" -- well, that works both ways. Don't assume the allegations are untrue until you've actually read the indictment (thesmokinggun.com has it available for you to read). You can rush to judgment about innocence just as easily as you can rush to judgment about guilt. We're not here to determine his guilt or innocence as it applies to jail; we're here to try to force the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons and Nike to do the right thing and get this man off the football field.
By the way, according to some sources, this is just the tip of the iceberg and there may be many, many more NFL players involved in dog fighting.

So amazing, thank you guys for being so freakin amazing at what you do.
Posted by: Sarah | July 20, 2007 11:54 PM
I wish you people would leave him alone, there is no proof he had anything to do with the dog fighting, everyone feels sorry for the dogs but just because he is a celebrity doesnt mean you can single him out. Just because he owned the house doesnt automatically mean he had anything to do with what happened there. When you have proof he had something to do with it, there is a possibility i will change my opinion. [ the right to be innocent until proven guilty applies to celebrities and athletes too ]
Posted by: John Jones | July 20, 2007 11:58 PM
It seems like the whole country is up in arms over Michael Vick, and rightly so, but you can be sure that few have stopped to think how factory farming is no less cruel. To all the meat eaters out there - get educated about where your food comes from before you go throwing stones.
Posted by: Shawn | July 21, 2007 12:43 AM
people get a grip.in any caseif you are associated with any illegal doing then you are arrested.so much for innocent before proven guility.you mean to tell me he never went to his property to see what was going on?i guess we are all dummies.he shold be given a fair trial .if guilty then throw the book at him.this is the lowest of lows. dogs dont ask for this to be thrus on them.we as human beings must protect animals.

to coolfusion...
Vick's contract included 37 million in guaranteed money. If Blank cuts him today, Vick will get the remainder 21 million he is owed immediately. And if he is eventually cleared of these charges, another team would sign him to another 100mil contract in a heartbeat.
But, if Blank waits...and Vick is convicted, then Vick's contract will be void based on NFL conduct rules that are written into contracts. If a contract is terminated under that clause, the player has the right to file a grievance and have an arbitrator decide whether the club acted reasonably. But in the case of a conviction, it's a done deal. And the team could take legal action against him to get a lot of that money back.
Right now, ESPN is reporting that A Blank is considering asking Vick to take a leave of absence until this matter is resolved. Which means he would be out for the entire season.
So, in a way...Blank's wait and see approach isn't as black and white as some people would like it to be.

I am so glad to know that there are so many people out there that share my passion for animals. We have to hit these people where it hurts -their wallets. If the NFL doesn't sack Vick then we should shun the whole NFL. Stop buying tickets to their games, don't buy their shirts or their sneakers
And we need to stop the Hip Hop industry, who I understand are also a part of this sick culture. Don't buy their music. These people are making big money because we are supporting them. We have to make a serious stand. We can do without football, basketball and hip hop music. If they love "ghetto" so much, let's send them back there.

Right on Karen. This is all about $'s. Vegas already has forward betting on the table under the assumption the Vick will play. Nike has to unload current inventory and dont want to set a precedent. Arthur Blank (owner of the falcons and general sleazebag) wants to protect his legacy. The players union (mostly ghetto thugs) are holding fast and protecting there own. The NFL the best i can figure is just plain stupid.

Oh, "Allen", puhleezz ... yeah, sure, this guy has such a tough life and we're going to make it "worse". Give me a bloody break! He's a multi-millionaire -- he's not suffering like the dogs he's tortured and killed. They're the victims here, not Primative Vick and his thugs. He'll be found guilty - probably that would offend somebody like you. Oh, well.

Oh, puhleezzz, "Allen". Give me a bloody break! This guy is a multi-millionaire, his life is most certainly not going to be made "worse" -- that would imply that it was already bad. No, only the pitbulls he has tortured and murdered have had bad lives, NOT PRIMATIVE VICK and his thugs. I can't wait for him to be found guilty. I can only hope that he'll do prison time -- not to mention finding himself on one of those "&*&( stands" that he's so fond of.

Is "thier" an actual word? You are a very sad, ignorant, little person. And not very original, either. Please, please, please consider a obtaining a formal education. Still, I must admit you ARE pathetically amusing in your attempt to assert an untenable argument/position. Regarding KFC, I'm sure you get an employee discount (dumpster diving) anyway...

Allen,
SHUT UP!!! I hope Vick is thrown and kept in jail. Instead of 6 years in prison, i say it be changed to 60 YEARS IN PRISON. Let him taste his own medicine. I'm proud that PETA is protesting. If they didn't, who would? One person can't change it, but a group like PETA can. Thank you PETA! You're like an angel to those poor creatures who don't have one.

What role model is this inhumane sicko setting for our youth. Suspend him from the team until he has his day in court. Look what he cost these innocent dogs, their lifes, he deserves nothing less than but to be suspended. He is sick minded.

William,
"So what do you punk bitches think of that?"
************Sigh.******
William, William, William. What I think is, it's a free country. You can do whatever you want.
It's so sad to me that people like you could be so flippant. Haven't you ever had a pet that you liked? Didn't you ever have a mother or a sister or a girlfriend who you loved? Why do you use the B word and why would you want an animal to suffer?
Don't you any feel sympathy for others?

My female pit was thrown into the ring to teach males how to kill. Because she is part whippet, they apparently couldn't catch her. The ringleaders then decided she might make a good fighting dog, so they tried to torture her into aggression. Because she wouldn't "turn" after all their efforts at torture, they got pissed off and tied her to the back of a car to drive her back legs off.
After coming upon her limping out of someone's backyard, right rear leg open to the bone, left rear leg looking like a chainsaw had gone after it, my boyfriend dashed her to the vet. I was called at work and told she would have to be put down due to abused pit laws, and burst into tears. The vet said he wouldn't tell anyone about her, but that even if she weren’t put down, her legs would have to be amputated. I couldn't stop crying, and told him we just couldn't make that decision right away. My boyfriend and I took her home, and even though we are not religious, we prayed for two days solid for help. That Thursday, we took her back to the vet, fearing the worst. Instead, he came running out from behind the desk in wonder, even calling the staff to join him! Apparently her tendons and ligaments had started to bind and heal back together enough that he was willing to let us bandage her and monitor her condition.
$1000 in vet bills later, she is our healed angel baby - the best dog we two dog lovers have ever had - and I still cry 5 years out when I tell this story. By the way – we were told we were lucky - that normally what they do is light the dogs they can’t “turn” on fire! And that sometimes a third of all pits in Bay Area shelters are victims of full body third degree burns! My only prayer to this day is that I wish all these people who had never met one of these amazing dogs in real life would stop writing these opinionated stories about how awful they are, and just go to a shelter and foster or rescue one of them yourselves. You will find out that the main reason, besides strength-to-size muscle mass, that these dogs have been singled out for ring fighting, is that they love their human so much, they will do anything - including die in the ring for you - to make you happy.
My most painful story is a friend of mine who worked at a Bay Area shelter where at least one third of the dogs were rescued pits. She used to be the one to hold the dogs when they were due to be put down, and try to give them a peaceful death. She quit mysteriously one day, and I finally ran into her and asked why. She said she had been able to handle the situation until one day a black and white male pit came in, throat slit from ear to ear, full body third degree burns. She said she couldn't even fathom what kind of pain he was in, and as she was gathering him in her arms to hug him and talk him through his inevitable death, she began to cry uncontrollably. She said what did it for her was that the dog was more concerned for the pain she was in than his own brutal condition, so that as he was breathing his last breath, he was trying to lick the tears off her face. She said she just couldn't go back to work again because it had become impossible to see the brutality inflicted on these huge-hearted creatures, and she just needed to go away for a while. A long while.
Please folks, Michael Vick and these other people who do these things have no hearts - but the animals they so brutally torture do. Can we turn this into a dialogue about how to protect these magnificent human-loving creatures, and can some of these oh-so-opinionated bloggers please try to befriend at least one of these abused or abandoned spirits, before they write such uninformed and misguided stories about them? These dogs were not born this way, and it is a form of animal racism that they get singled out for these horrific fates! Please try to get some personal experience with these pitty babies, and then you will understand why we rescuers view this as being as important as the war or child abuse. Microcosm is macrocosm - what we do in the privacy of our homes is what we will do in the world - and pit bull torture reflects quite well the same values that would lead us into war without questioning our own motives.
Make friends with a pit bull today, and you will become a pit bull advocate with a much bigger heart and a much more painful understanding of the hidden violence our culture engenders through its championing of might over right, and its selling of its own bully tactics over any kind of diplomacy or understanding. These angels need understanding - they need as much love from you as they are willing to offer - and I pray we will become a society that raises the pit bull back to its all American dog status, as it was at the turn of the last century - Little Rascals, RCA, et al. All we are saying is...give pits a chance.

Watching TV with my boys we saw the news about Vick and the video of the dogs fighting. We listened to the reports of Vick killing dogs and it was a turning point for my family.
My oldest said Vick was definately not cool and should pay big time. My middle boy looked down at his #7 jersey, looked at the dogs fighting, peeled the shirt off, threw it across the room and said "I'm never wearing this jerks stuff again." My youngest looked at the figting dogs and then at our dog and began to cry. Our pit mix Wizard came over and licked his face and my son hugged his dog and said "Daddy don't let Vick hurt any more dogs..Do something".

I said earlier that all of this protesting before a verdict is handed out reminds me of the Duke case. Ruth, I understand about the whole "DA running for office in a predominantly black community" difference. My main point is the fact that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton used that situation to let their voices be heard. I view PETA in the same way with this matter. People get caught dog fighting all the time, unfortunately just like people get charged with rape. PETA is using this situation to advance their own agenda. Because it's Michael Vick, they are getting everyone riled up so that the rest of America knows they still exist. If Vick is guilty, then I would be more than a hundred percent behind him getting time in prison (not a life sentence like some of you radical people). I also would love it if Vick were innocent. Not because I like Michael Vick, but because Vick probably has more childhood fans than PETA and I wouldn't want them to see their hero go down in flames like this. I didn't see picket lines when Kobe Bryant was charged with rape. It pains me that an organization like this cares more for the treatment of animals than they do about people. I love animals, but I love people more. What if Vick, the man that your organization has already concluded guilty, is in fact innocent? Judging from the sound of it, he probably isn't completely innocent if at all. But the chance still exists, and PETA is attempting to ruin him before they know all the facts. If he's guilty, then I wouldn't care at all if PETA blows this thing up for their own hidden agenda. I just don't agree with the timing.

William,
Getting on here and calling people bitches will not do any good. I'm against PETA's actions in this matter as well. By you making a post such as the one you made, you are just giving the people that oppose your point of view more affirmation to think what they think.
To whoever posted about protesting against the Hip Hop culture:
I completely agree. Not because they are allegedly involved in dogfighting, but because they glorify replusive actions towards other people and American children do not need to hear the propoganda they speak so they can make millions talking about "bitches and hoes", smoking weed, and "putting caps in peoples asses." I find that far more appalling than being involved in dogfighting.

Mike Vick makes more money than I can even imagine. What is $10,000 to $20,000 to him for a dog fight? He is sadistic and if you talk to any professional psychiatrist they will tell you this guy is dangerous. If you can harm the innocent in ways that he did then imagine what you could do humans. So ask yourself, was it for the money or to satisfy his own taste for blood and pain? Mike Vick inflicts horrors on animals and humans. Such as inflicting Herpes on unsuspecting women because he has no shred of decency. I also ask, what type of mother raises these type of people? I remember growing up (I am only 33) that my parent were responsible for what I did, good or bad. These days some parents now take the victim stance and cannot even teach their children compassion and integrity. I was poor, it doesn't take money to teach those values, inner city or not. Stop your victim mentality excuses and start teaching values to your children. Until then our society will be dominated by these types of things.

To all the ignorant posts - especially the “They’re just dogs” comments – this isn’t about MICHAEL VICK so quick worrying about the fate of your hero. It is about the dogs and dog-fighting. It is a pussy man’s sport - wusses who need to prove their “manhood” at the expense of the innocent. Just like wife beating and child abuse, it is a coward’s contribution to life.
Dog-fighting is vulgar, disgusting, and embarrassing coming from a country we should be so “proud” of. It needs to end. I’m happy that Michael Vick has brought it to the forefront for discussion debate as “celebrity” seems to be the only way to grab attention.
I don’t mind two men going into the ring and beating the crap out of each other, but I do mind men taking innocent creatures, turning them into fighting machines, having them battle and punishing the losers. I also think those who watch it are lower than the terds who organize it. And let’s not talk about the small dogs and cats these same men use as training tools for turning these dogs into beasts. Why don’t they just go beat the crap out of each other, bet on it and then when one of them loses, torture them to death? Please – the less of them around the better.
I don't know what your religious beliefs are but bottom line - we are all granted life as a gift. We are here for 100 years give or take some: Religion aside - basic rules of humanity suggest being good to your fellow man, being good to the animals and being good to the earth - leave all as you found it. It's not yours, it is on loan. It's a shame you are taking your gift of intelligence and abusing it - thinking you are above animals and can decisions on their behalf.
You need to look at dogs like you would a human infant - they can't speak, they can't properly communicate, and rely on us to protect them – and you know what? They trust us. From minute they are born, they TRUST us. I don't suppose you might be one to take an infant, water it down and electrocute it because you are bigger and more intelligent?
We as people have barriers with our own - we can't speak all the languages out there, so what do we rely on most when posed with the challenge of speaking to someone who doesn't know our language? Eye contact. So with that said, if you look at a dog in the eye - he looks back into your eyes - not at your legs, not at the ground, not at your chest - in your EYES. Doesn't that display enough intelligence to earn our respect? At least? And our protection?
I know I am probably wrong on the suggestions above, but I put thought behind it, unlike your responses. Maybe you are so self-absorbed and life is all about you. And maybe it is "cool" to come here (to an animal lover website) and vomit your diatribe for shits and giggles. But realize you stand with very a heartless few - and you just look really dumb. Open a book or do some traveling and get yourself a brain. You’ll be much more powerful and people might just listen to you or genuinely care what you have to say.

The "A" in PETA stands for "Animals". Can you understand that? Why waste posting here, go help people!!! Latin America and Africa await your presence---go out and help. Lots of people there. Take in the homeless in the USA into your home, buy them clothes, pay for their medical needs, embrace them completely.
When you help animals you make the world a better place and a more peaceful one. Justice and empathy is inter-related and it is delegated towards all species, not just the human one.

For all that organize or attend a dog fight are truly sick & twisted people, to also take a child to one of these fights is just really crazy. When a boxer steps into the ring, they do so with the understanding of what is about to happen. This cannot be said for innocent, beautiful and smart dogs. I don't care who you are or how rich you are, you have NO RIGHT to pit one animal against another. You are not manly, you are scum. The way in which these dogs are treated from birth is beyond wrong. Let's change the law; let these scums live the life the dogs led and then let them die the same fate as the "losing" dog.

I hope Vick does get fired, but either way, I will never go to another NFL game again. I see these so called "sports heroes" for what they REALLY are - a bunch of lowlife scum, who just get paid a lot of money to throw a ball around.
Posted by: JaneElliott | July 22, 2007 09:10 PM
The NFL doesn't have to wait for a conviction to take action against Vick. If he was a schoolteacher accused of soliciting a prostitute, he would be suspended pending trial. Same goes for a police officer. Do you think a schoolteacher named in a federal dogfighting indictment would remain employed for long? The NFL needs to suspend Vick, if for no other reason than to get a handle on the bad behavior of its players. It's on its way to becoming the National FELON League.

CROSS, (going way up to comment 7-20-07 @ 3:29)
I applaud the (non-animal activists) parents who offer logical comments on here saying things like that they won't have their children root for the Falcons/Vick because of this atrocity; some say that their children are VERY upset hearing about him on the news; and so on.
Those parents are not hiding the reality of the cruelites in life from their children. This is not about teaching hatred towards another person. It is about teaching children to have "hatred" towards the cruel ACTIONS of what "really, really sick" and "crazy" people who are capable of doing to other innocent beings.
If you want to keep your children in a bubble, that's your choice, but keep in mind that Vick is the one who is indicted for cruel, inhumane arocities, not animal activists.
And may I suggest that you read the bizarre anti-animal comments on here that clearly lack compassion. Seems to me those children, now adults, were never taught compassion.

FIRST & FOREMOST... I AM TOTALLY SICKENED BY MICHAEL VICK AND HIS FRIENDS....IF GUILTY.. THEY SHOULD BE PUT AWAY BUT TO CONDEM THE ENTIRE NFL IS RIDICULOUS... THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF GREAT PEOPLE IN THE LEAGUE AND MANY WHO DO WONDERFUL CHARITY WORK.. WHY SHOULD THEY BE INCLUDED IN THIS SITUATION?...
AND WHY IS IT THAT PETA AND THE HUMANE SOCIETY DROOLS OVER SITUATIONS LIKE THIS TO GET OUT THEIR NAME AND AGENDA TO THE WORLD AND MOST IMPORTANTLY... USE THIS TO INFLAME PASSIOINS TO AID IN THEIR FUND RAISING....
Posted by: STEVE | July 23, 2007 02:33 PM
Did I miss the trial? Was Micheal Vick convicted? How about protesting once the man has been proven guilty before burning him at the stake. It is irresponsible and childish to demand that a man be stripped of his livelihood because of some allegations.
I am 100% against Dog Fighting and animal cruelty but to demand that a man lose his job based on allegations is not right either. Rather than using Vick as a high profile whipping boy should wait until he is proven guilty. Don't be bitter just because he is young, talented and makes more money than you. He still has a right to justice.

Once again, the "A" in PETA stands for animals. If you have a deep concern for only people you are wasting your time on this blog. Instead of wasting time why aren't you doing something to help only people and leave those who are trying to alleviate the many injustices towards animals in their quest to gain justice for them.
Loving animals is not synonymous with hating humans, that is the animal-hating point of view. I choose to dedicate my time to advocating for animals because they have no voice in human society and the atrocities committed against them are too numerous to name; hence it requires great energy and love to continue fighting for them. All humans have advocates for the simple reason because they are human. Human charities receive billions in donations whereas many animal advocacy groups struggle to continue their mission. Only animal advocates were helping the many animals suffering during the natural disasters that Americans have witnessed these past few years.
Be respectful of people sensitive enough and loving enough to want to help vulnerable creatures who have no voice in human society and who suffer every second of the day.
If you want to dedicate your life to helping only people, well go for it. I do all the time; as a teacher I help teens everyday. Teaching is a noble profession. And BTW, teachers would be suspended w/o pay immediately after a fed indictment.
Posted by: Ana | July 23, 2007 03:36 PM
there are plenty of NFL players that do horrible things, including dog fighting, that have not been indicted and there are those that support dog fighting also....yes, some do charity work...but name me any that do charity work for animals...
Posted by: Ana | July 23, 2007 06:32 PM
ANA, VERY WELL said to Ronald Hopkins.
People who have comments like his continue to prove what I always say: they are not educated on animal rights and do not see the whole picture - the connection, the inter-relationship of the affects and effects of the human/animal/envirionmental/societal relationship.
So once again I will repeat a few examples to the "Ronalds". Animal advocates KNOW that most murderers are in prison because they gained a bloodlust for torturing and killing animals. (FBI documented) By us exposing and stopping animal abusers in their tracks, HOPEFULLY they will not go on to kill human beings.
When animal abuse is discovered and reported in a household by animal activists, that sends up a red-flag warning to child counselors and the FBI that child abuse is very often consistently discovered, when otherwise it would not have been known. (also FBI documented)
That is ONLY two valid examples of what we try to expose and curtail...and we do it for FREE...and without recongnition...and without the purpose of self-glorification.
If you don't consider that helping people and society, then I don't know what more you expect since we deal at a preventative level. Unfortunately, it is at the expense of the pain and torture of innocent beings, the animals, that we discover how inhumane and gruesome some people can be towards others.
So if you want to wait around with the potential of Vick killing a person, that's up to you.
Posted by: Ariel | July 23, 2007 06:55 PM
After what has happened to the Duke players i would hope the Falcons and the NFL reserve action until Vick has had his day in court. Is he guilty? Probably, he still deserves his right to due process like everyone else.

I just called the Nike 1-800 number this morning to say my family would not be purchasing any more Nike products do to their relationship with Michael Vick. I was told that Nike is no longer selling any of his products on their website, but it could not control retailers to pull his products off their shelves.
Keep up the boycott!! It's unfortunate that with all the money Vick has been given, it has been able to buy him class, integrity or good sense.

You folks at PETA are idiots and probably RACISTS! The man hasn't even been convicted yet and you're already calling for him to be locked away! He was indicted not found guilty of a crime. I'm a law enforcement officer and it's not hard to get an indictment. Evidence can be circumstantial at best and you'll get an indictment. During a grand jury they only here what the so called evidence is against the accused and the jury typically renders an indictment. Before you people get in an uproar calling for him to loose his job and have his endorsement deals taken away wait until all of the facts are presented during the trial; then you'll see if the evidence against him will stand-up. Also there are so many other things to be protesting about in this world......for instance the genocide that's taking place in the Sudan! Finally, if this were a white athlete like Tom Brady would you condemn him from jump or wait for a verdict of guilt or innocence.

Are you out protesting against the genocide or anything else? Nah, didn't think so. BTW, is there ANY possible way that we can post an online dictionary for people like Troy? BTW, Troy, race is not an issue here; it's cruelty that's the issue.
Posted by: VestaGirl | July 24, 2007 02:18 PM
If it was Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Hasselbeck, whoever, and the indictment had the EXACT same info as Vick's? YES, I would be just as quick to condemn!
I also want to point out that Vick has become the public face of a much larger problem. Yes, we want Vick suspended, but frankly no one cared about dogfighting until someone FAMOUS, black or white doesn't matter, became tied to it. It is not enough for Vick to be suspended, prosecuted, etc. We want ALL dogfighters to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
And for all of you who keep saying "They're just dogs," I really can't think of anything to say to you. Wait, yes I can...what did a dog EVER do to you to earn such contempt?

Vick is another perfect example that you can take the kid out of the ghetto but you cant take the ghetto out of the kid. I hope he goes to jail. Maybe they should make him fight one of those poor abused pitbulls. I have 2 Pits they are the most loyal dogs in the worl and i never for 1 second would ever think of fighting them. I have a 2 year old son who chases them around the house and they never even think of doing any harm to him. The people in this world who train these wonderful animals to do bad things should all be punished. I wish I could be there protesting with all the PETA folks I respect everything you guys do. SACK VICK and if the NFL doesnt do more then they will lose my business.

By the way this is a animal group they could care less about Sudan. As far as the black and white issue go get a life man no matter who it was there is no need for this in sports. COLOR is the way every black person tries to make things. Color has nothing to do with it and just so you know before you even respond stupid i'm not white....

Michael Vick is the epitome of everything that is wrong with this country. As someone who probably came from nothing or damn near nothing (I question the intelligence of people who become pro-athletes anyway, Vick was pretty much handed everything on a silver platter and like clockwork, he has managed to squander and ruin it all. I am ashamed to say i ever watched an NFL game....we should stop glorifying these over privileged f**k-ups.

My 12-year-old son just said he knows what he can be for Halloween... he said he can wear his Michael Vick jersey and "be a retard"!

Let's get real people, it was just animals! I wish you all cared for other people just as much as you cared for an animal. You all are asking this man to have his whole life thrown away and it's not going to bring the animals back. This is ridiculous. When Scooter Libby was given a get out of jail free card, no one protested that...Let's get life's priorities in order. It was an animal, yes it can't speak for itself, but when you pass by a homeless person on the street, do you try to save them or do you give them $1? How dare you ask this man to be fired from his job, that's all he knows, that's his lively hood....Get Real
Posted by: UR taking it too far | July 25, 2007 01:05 PM
I know you won't post this but...if you all was god fearing people..how in this world could you convict this man without due process. I really feel sorry for you all becacuse it dosen't make sense to convict him and you all haven't really heard his side of the story, also let me ask this question. Where do you all be when horse racing go on and the horse breaks it's leg and the owner puts the animal to sleep. To me and alot of people PETA stands for People Entirley Totally Assholes, Why don't y'all stand up for human rights ?..Bush got sons and daughters being killed everyday but these dogs will make headlines more than that. Y'all priority is screwed up.
Posted by: Brandon Woods | July 25, 2007 04:56 PM
you are right on target with whats wrong with this country...
yes what vick did ( if found guilty) is pathetic and unacceptable in today's world...
but on this website where animal rights is always put in front of human's and in todays press.... how amazing is it that the death of these dogs get top billing over the deaths of ANY SOLDIER IN THIS ASSININE WAR... WHAT IS WRONG WITH TODAY'S PRIORITIES???????????
Posted by: steve | July 25, 2007 07:53 PM
Brandon Woods,
First off, you spelled "Entirely" wrong. ^^
The way I see it, we don't need to hear his side of the story, as we have witnesses and solid proof. I find it hard to believe that he had all those dogs and equipment and was doing nothing with them.
As for you comment about horse racing, did you not see the post a few months back about Barbaro's death? Actually, I think there were a few about him. If you ever go the the PETA official website, they assert their position on horse racing very clearly.
As to why we don't stand up for human issues: This is PETA. People for the Ethical Treatment of ANIMALS. Not humans. Not to say we don't care. You can be in PETA and a human rights organization at the same time. It's not illegal. ^^
Soldiers in Iraq at least have some inkling of what they were getting into. The dogs that are forced to fight do not know what will happen to them and have absolutely no choice in the matter. Humans can speak up for themselves. Animals have no voice.
Posted by: Iris | July 25, 2007 10:38 PM
Brandon Woods: the reason PETA is working on animal rights is right there in the "A" (just to connect the dots for you, A is for ANIMALS!).
It is NOT "PETH" (People for the Ethical Treatment of Humans).
This. Is. An. Animal. Rights. Organization. You. Twit!
The reason such an organization needs to exist is because of people like you and many other losers on this site, who clearly don't care about how animals are treated. I can guarantee you that EVERY staff member at PETA would be happy to be out of a job if it meant that animals around the world were no longer in need of protection.
Posted by: Michele | July 26, 2007 01:56 AM
BRANDON WOODS, please educate yourself about animal advocacy before you and some others keep displayng your lack of intelligence. Animal advocacy encompassses the human/animal/environmental/societal relationship. If you can understand that ALL life and our environment is inter-related, then you will get at least that much of a quick drift about animal advocacy...and how it all works together...and how we do, in fact, try to protect other humans and society from vicious culprits or sociopaths, within our realm.
IF you were aware of what we do, YOU would be very surprised as to how we affected YOUR very own health and life for the better.
Now let me give you an example pertaining to your complaint about us already "convicting" Vick. If you own a car and the police found drug paraphenalia in your car because one of your passengers left it there, and even though you never touched drugs in your life, guess who would be held legally/criminally responsible for that drug paraphenalia? YOU would!
So the evidence was found on Vick's property. That makes him legally/criminally responsible, whether he participated or not. He would have to had been in a coma or another planet in order not to have any knowledge about it.
Now may I ask you: what do you do for human rights? And how would you go about telling Bush to stop having sons and daughters being killed in the war? And do you have any other priorities besides trying to be nasty?
Posted by: Ariel | July 26, 2007 11:27 PM
Wow
Can America be divided any other way. Race,Territory,Religion,(For And Against Convicted ATHLETES?!?!).
Point is Just wait. JUST WAIT!!!. See if he's innocent or not. Don't be judgemental. EITHER WAY. Don't just automatically assume he's innocent. And please don't automatically assume he's guilty. I won't place my opinion about how I feel about the guy until I know the verdict.
Yeah we're states..but we're DEFINATELY not United.

It's quite fortunate that you have a bete noir (pun intended) in Mike VIc, given that you lames at PETA do next to nothing against any of the major cos who actually are killing animals and whose stock values increase based on their efficiency in doing so. Mike Vic was never seen any where near the "alleged" (that word you lames use when ever ur talking about one of Bush/Cheney/Blair/Sharon's documented crimes/video taped crimes but seem to forget when condemning your little safe scapegoats) dog fighting operation...nor was he even seen near the premises. And for you idiots (spoiled rich white trust fund babies looking for something to rage against that wont get your head bashed in by the riot squad like say, protesting the war will do) that say how can his name be on a deed/lease and him never go to the house, you idiots obviously dont know a damn thing about being broke and having to lean on a wealthier (or better credit having) relative to cosign in order for you to get a break/loan/acceptance letter for a rental/home purchase. Honestly, aside from the usual "beast, inhuman, savage, etc" crap that you all used to shout and whoop when your granddaddies used to go lynch one of those uppity negroes, or other assorted untermenshcen (according to your grandfather's of course depending on the countries you lame, limo liberal losers came from), what proof or remote connection do you have he was involved? What do you have connecting him to any dog fighting activities you idiots? Oh yeah, he loves and supports dog fights but never goes to watch the training or even the fighting of the dogs he supposedly owns...give me a break...I'm going to go put a peta shirt on a scottish terrier or lab (cause you llbean reading latte liberals around ny seem to all have one of these, when your not out with your adopted asian or african accessories oops babies) and kick it in the face...ill post it on you tube and link it to the site just for you

Michael Vick is a scum bag! I say we string him up and light his piddly ass on fire like he did to those poor dogs! What a POS!!! I hope he dies soon!
Posted by: Tom | July 29, 2007 01:24 AM
Blow me Brandon! Have you even read the case against Vick? Obviously not. If your really this stupid, you must either be under 10 years old and stole mommy's computer, or you are mentally retarded. Grow up kid and smell the roses!
Posted by: Jimbo | July 29, 2007 01:26 AM
I am deepley sadden of the pain and suffering of all the innocent dogs who were subjected to this cruel and inhumane activity. Micheal Vick should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

I sent this letter to Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner and Arthur Blank as a cc: and to Ann Powell of Beckett Media and Nike to thank them for suspending Michael Vick's contract without pay while the case is still pending.
I encourage others to do the same.
Dear Mr. Werner,
I would like to personally thank the owner Ann Powell for removing Vick related merchandise from your inventory.
While I realize that he has not been convicted, the disturbing allegations and nineteen page indictment make it difficult to deny Michael Vick was involved in what he is accused of. To what extent remains to be seen but I commend Ann Powell for not letting profit cloud her decision in taking a stance against those who commit animal cruelty.
As the daughter of an attorney, the feds when they indict someone do so only if they feel they have a strong case and that person is responsible for the crimes committed which is why they have a high conviction rate.
Given that Michael Vick was a homeowner of the Moonlight Road property regardless of what his ex coach and others who know him might attest about his kind, quiet nature, as a social work student, I have studied, learned about and worked with many sociopaths and murderers who act and appear to be the "nice guy" and do unthinkable and incomprehensible acts.
This is why I am pleased to see that Nike, Reebok, and Beckett Media are taking a firm stand.
I hope that the NFL and others will follow suit and suspend Michael Vick without pay while his case is pending.
Sincerely,

Where have you people been?.Organized Dog Fighting has been going on for over 100 years in this country and your just now getting angry?.It is the ASPCA that is also trying to prosicute Vicks and I do hope they do.It is not because he is black or loaded, the man has no reguard for the life of these poor animals nor the law.i hope he pays the price if he is guilty.I am a member of the ASPCA and HSUS and her where I live dog fighting is a problem. The law needs to be enforced to stop the problem.Lets all hope that this incident will help other animals across the country.

M Vick, What A P O S I say how about like treatment. I would love to be the one to swing the bat to break his leg, or maybe just put his sorry ass in a sack and drown him. Better yet, haw about lethal injection that sure is more humane than what he did to those dogs.
Posted by: Dianna Smith | August 17, 2007 06:40 PM
I dont even know where to start! I agree with all the above. Alanta you need to stand up and not allow this disgusting devil to play! Stand up for those you cannot speak, for those who are helpless in this country! Attend his trials, picket his games, and let him know WE THE PEOPLE will not stand for this behavior. I for one, will be at those games with a bright neon sign and Im not from Atlanta nor do I own a pet. But I will fight this as I fight child/infant abuse!

Dear Sirs, M.Vick needs to be
permanently suspended from the NFL. He's a bad example to our children & a truly evil man. He had no "mercy" on his dogs who "lost" & we
should have no "mercy" on him
or his career. He knew what he was doing was wrong & he blew it.

I'm amazed that Nike would allow sadistic savages like Vick to promote their goods. I and my family will never buy their products again.
Posted by: Pamela | August 27, 2007 08:02 AM
Please inform the NFL and the Atlanta Falcons that my husband and I will never watch a game that Michael Vick is a part of. His apology today is only because he got caught. He showed up in his neat and no doubt expensive suit while the dogs on his property, not his home by the way, burn up in the southern states. Hopefully our comments along with thousands of others will have some voice for the dogs.
