Hideous Cat Experiments at University of Colorado

I got an e-mail from Ingrid on Monday, asking me to please remember not to fall into the "animals everyone likes" trap—e.g., talking up a storm about loveable animals like chimps and kittens, but not giving equal time to animals like hens, sheep, fish, or rats, who suffer horribly in farms and laboratories but don’t always get the compassion they deserve, because they’re not quite so cuddly. As usual, Ingrid’s point is right on the money, but it’s also true, I think, that many people come to the understanding that no animal should be exploited (however small or odd-looking they are) only after asking themselves how they would feel if their own dog or cat was abused in that way.
Which brings me to the horrible news we just received from the University of Colorado. According to a whistleblower at the university, cats who were being used in hideous experiments conducted by an individual named Moshe Solomonow, were not being anaesthetized properly—and video footage obtained by PETA shows the animals writhing and vomiting after being injected with a drug called chloralose. For years, Solomonow has cut cats open and messed around with their spinal columns, saying that his study is somehow related to lower back disorders in humans. All the cats are killed at the end of the experiments. The video is tough to get through, and it makes me think of my own cat and how awful it would be if these torturers got their hands on her, but I hope that people who watch it will make the connection that this kind of callous disregard for suffering is unacceptable regardless of whether the victim’s a cat, a pig, a rat, or a human. Please click here to write to the University of Colorado and ask them to stop it.

The gray cat in the beginning of the video looks like my cat, Sierra. The thought of someone torturing her or any other animal is infuriating. The experimenters think they know back pain, but let's just say they'd better watch their own backs if they ever cross my path.

I went to CU Boulder (not Denver, which is just a minor branch of the main university, as far as I know.) CU Boulder is already infamous for its experiments on bonnet macaques (http://www.freethecu34.org/)--so I will definitely write to them and complain!

I know this kind of experiments and this kind of people. They call this 'Basic Research', in German 'Grundlagenforschung'. One monster named Konrad Ackert made the same shameful thing at Zurich University and his servant who killed the cats afterwards - Mr. Salzmann - was sitting in the office in the Zurich Railway station for to count the votes on the day when we had to vote nationwide for or against vivisection. When I asked him what he was doing there he laughed at me with a dirty face and the other vote counters also and said: 'Are you living behind the moon?' I never in my life shall forget this thing and the attitude of 'my' state, never. This Konrad Ackert stated some years later that he had horrible nightmares! So be careful Moshe that the same thing doesn't happen to you...

Cats, all through the ages have been victims of torture.
They are often the animal of choice for people who enjoy inflicting pain on defencless beings. It makes you wonder just what goes through the mind of these people who mame these animals in the name of science.

It is clear that this Moshe is a severely mentally disturbed individual who is cheating the taxpayers.
It is also clear that the university administration has no control over the corruption inside its walls.

We had a pet rat, and believe me I loved him every bit as much as I did my dog. We grieved when he died, and did everything to keep him healthy and happy. They are truly lovely creatures, with a personality and a curious nature. You wouldn't believe the stuff he drug around the house, hiding in his loot stashes!

Oh my god, can you say "death penalty"?
Yes, I'm for moderation, but I'm all for the law doing justice too. Can't Congress enact some tougher laws on this one?

I just can't believe people can be purposefully cruel to animals. It blows my mind!

TO all of you people who have comented on this doctor:
He is doing vital research to investigate causes and treatments for the backpain millions of americans complain about on a daily basis. He is not torturing these cats, nor is he being cruel. Without research like his, you and many other people would not be getting diagnoses and treatments to the back pain that keeps you awake at night, and keeps you from working. So before judging someone who you have only heard about through a measely video which doesn't even contain the person under attack, research the facts. This man is not cruel nor mentally disturbed, get a life.

Hi there.
I am in the UK, so am not fully aware of who regulates what in the States. Who gives this person / institution the licence to practice these experiments ?
When was it last confirmed that they are very definately still performing these experiments ?
Who can I write to, who has the most authority who will not ignore anti-vivisection correspondence ?
Please tell me and I will get in touch with them.
Thank you very much indeed,
Blessings,
Val x

I'd rather live with back pain for the rest of my life than live with the thought that these animals are suffering in such a way.

I knew it! I just knew it! Scientists are evil and sadistic. What has science brought man but misery and trouble. Just stop and think about it. We have the atomic bomb, then the hydrogen bomb, and then the arms race, and then biowarfare and then now invasive technologies that can spy on us all hours of the day. These scientists are mad I tell you and clearly what they say is benefical to society is but a poison to us, in which they torture small defenseless animals in the adolatrous worship of their manmade new Golden calf called "science." So I say, screw them all. Throw away your computer and phone. Break all your lights and never use electricity. Throw away all your asprin and medicines and refuse any medical treatments that has come from animal testing, like that obtain for vaccines, and various therapies for Parkinson's, Huntington's, Alzheimers, MS, inflamatory bowel disease, arthritis, and migraines. We don't need those scientists and their evil, sick, twisted, sadistic black arts soiling our good wonderfully natural planent and ailments with their cures and stuff by golly I sue do tell you!

I used to work for this facility and I always knew the place was full of managers and CEO's who know more about image and publicity than caring for individuals. They state they are "evidence based" but that is a crock of you know what! I will state this to anyone who will listen: Do not use this facility, do not work at this facility! Do not let your friends or loved ones even near this depraved place! They had toxic levels of lead in their water pipes and did not even close down! They did not even find this out until after they had been open at the "new" facility for over a year! It just does not surprise me that this morally corrupt place would allow the senseless abuse of helpless animals! I am outraged and saddened to learn this news, but not surprised; this place is full of corruption. They pay for the honor of saying they are "one of america's best" ...they also pay to be able to say that they are "the favorite workplace for nurses in Colorado" Why do they then always have hiring fairs and HR open houses because they cannot keep nurses?

This would not happen if we live under God's plan. Petition to outlaw the practice and study of medicine human or vet. Let the healthy enjoy life.

I also worked at this place; luckily it was only for a couple of days. I have to agree with Gretchen when she describes the dangers and corruption of this facility. I worked at the old location. I had never felt so dirty inside and out. This place was so humid, moldy, creepy, and it reeked of death! Not to mention the poor critters I had to handle when cleaning their cages and disposing of the dead animals. I don't know for sure what the Dr. was trying to do but it definitely doesn't surprise me that there was illegal abuse happening here. The people I worked with were telling me all kinds of disturbing stories that I wish I had never heard. That place was weird and pretty well-secured; which made me think something bad was going on there. I was only allowed in 1/10th of the premises, but I think it was for the best. I really don't want to know what went on in that torturous facilitly.

Oh my god that is so sad those cats were so cute and instead of using cat why dont they use their own backs!!!

You people make me sick! I have been a vet tech for 10 years. The cat during this procedure feels absolutly no pain. You people need to realize that vet techs and vets are who they are becuase they care for animals. They would never allow any pain or inhumane things to happen to animals. Before you crazy people jump to conclusions learn the other side!

Tammy, who cares that you've been a vet. tech for 10 years. Did you actually get an education?
Before you get on this site calling people who love these cats "crazy," let's get straight about something. No, not ALL veterinarians and not ALL vet. techs care about animals. What do you think we have a Better Business Bureau for? Why do you think there is a Veterinary Medical Licensing Board? I'll tell you why. Because they know that there are nuts like you out there who have very little if any integrity and no conscience, and that get off on abusing other people's
animals. I personally know several people who are studying to become veterinary technicians, and they could care less about animals or people! They're just a group of ignorant troublemakers looking for a place to work where they don't think they will have to rise to a higher level of functioning. Do not come on here thinking you care more about animals than the rest of us do, because you don't! And you also suffer from impaired judgment. I feel very sorry for any animal that is in your care. How sad and scary!
