Pamela Anderson Turns Down Axe Body Spray $$$

This week, the folks at Unilever—the parent company for Axe Body Spray—learned the hard way that you can't perform nasty animal experiments for your product and have Pamela Anderson star in your ad campaigns. It's really one of those “one or the other” situations—both is just greedy. And, of course, it's worth mentioning that maiming and killing animals when you trawl out a new product is a singularly unpleasant way of carrying on in the first place.
Anyway, here's the letter that the wonderful Pamela wrote to Unilever asking them to get their heads out of their … um, out of the sand, and move their testing policy into the 21st century. Pamela, I know I've said this before, but I love you.

P.S. Click here for the full list of PETA—and Pam—approved companies that don’t test on animals.

Pam, you are my hero and inspiration! Way to go!!! My life has changed so much since I watched your video on KFC. 2 weeks later I am 5 pounds lighter and I only wish I went veg earlier. I don't get it... how can some people prance around in Burberry and COACH purses and still be self-proclaimed "animal-lovers"? I will continue to follow your example!

Darn. Another day I learn some favorite stuff is made upon animal suffering. Just bought a 15 fl. oz. Axe Stigmata only to stuff it in the garbage can, after reading Unilever does animal testing. Gotta take that list in the pocket.

It really inspires me that someone who is that rich isn’t all wrapped up in money. I love her! I never had respect for her until now. I cannot believe she turned them down! It is really inspirational. It definitely gives the hope that one day no animal will harmed.

I do not buy Unilever products, and wrote to tell them why (animal testing) and got this reply. I'm trying to read between the lines to see what I'm missing...it sounds like they aren't doing it except where legally bound by certain countries (so they should out of those countries, in my opinion). Basically I'm looking for clarification on this letter, and couldn't find another option on the PETA site to do so. Not necessary to forward it to the blog, but just need some insight:
We are pleased
to say that Unilever
Canada does not test any of its home or personal
care products on
animals, in keeping with an earlier pledge we
made to eliminate such
testing whenever possible.
Unilever Canada is committed to the elimination
of animal testing. We
are equally committed to consumer and customer
health and safety and to
the safety of our workforce and the environment.
Globally, in Unilever, non-animal testing is the
rule and animal testing
is the exception. Unilever does not undertake
animal testing or
commission others to do such testing on our
behalf unless it is
absolutely necessary to meet our health, safety
and environmental
obligations or it is demanded by government
regulators or other official
bodies. Before any animal testing is carried out,
our internal control
procedures require senior management to certify
in writing that there is
no other way of proceeding. We do not test
finished home or personal
care products on animals unless demanded by the
regulatory authorities
in the few countries where this is the law. In
such cases we still try
to convince the local authorities to change the
law. The safety of
Unilever products is assured by rigorous
procedures using data from
suppliers, the results of previous assessments
and the most up-to-date
information from the scientific literature
available in the public
domain. Our product development relies to a great
extent on our ability
to predict the safety of products.

Well I just read an article that says Amanada Bynes is the new spokesperson and model for the Vaseline line of products.. Somehow I think this kid dosen't even know they use animals to test their product.. At least I would like to think she dosen't
