Camouflage Deer?

As of this week, hunters have something new to worry about in addition to accidentally shooting each other and embarrassing themselves in public: Not being able to find any animals. At least that's the idea behind HIDE (Hunting Is Downright Evil), an anti-hunt group based in Minnesota that has been tranquilizing deer in popular hunting sites, painting them camouflage, and re-releasing them into the wild. According to HIDE President Jamie Drysdale, the group, which has more than 60 members in Minnesota and Wisconsin, are able to camouflage up to 12 deer a week, and hundreds of infuriated hunters have already submitted letters of complaint to their state governments. Here's a picture of a newly camouflaged buck from a hunting preserve in central Minnesota:

Amazing. Anyway, HIDE, here's wishing you the best of luck confounding hunters around the country. I can't wait to see the bear pictures!

Ok, I understand the want to stop the hunting, but tranquilizing deer and then painting them? That doesn't seem very humane.

You people need to be shot with a tranq and como added
Posted by: jerry | April 1, 2007 10:44 AM
That sounds like a great idea! Jack do you have HIDE's contact info?
Also do you know if this is legal?
Posted by: jay | April 1, 2007 11:18 AM
What a great idea! Maybe we should do the same with animals in labs.
Posted by: dw | April 1, 2007 11:46 AM
camouflage is very ok if it saves animals lives!
now an information for peta: when you have a look at today's ecorazzi website it seems that leo is tired from al gore and environmentalism - i already commented on their site. as i know leo is a vegetarian so if you catch him for a veggie burger ad - catch him if you can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

howbout i shoot all you dumb fuckers that are trying to ruin the world by getting rid of hunting and trapping do you no how fucked up this world would be if we didnt hunt and trap look at california the moutain lion attack numbers are up since trapping was made illegal there this world will be the biggest damn mess if trapping and hunting are outlawed we as trappers and hunters kill everything as humanely as possible and build are traps to cause as little pain as possible like the conibear when that trap fires the animal is dead instantly

PETA
People Eatin Tasty Animals.. That paint you put on the deer was very harmfull. You all are freakin morons
Posted by: Todd Edwards | April 1, 2007 01:12 PM
Thats actually a good idea, i think ill use that idea and go camouflage all your wives so when im raping them and they're screaming for their lives, u won't be able to find them

After reading somne of these posts, is it any wonder most of society thinks hunters are stupid?
I mean, you just have to say "hunter" and people start to laugh
Posted by: kelly | April 1, 2007 01:58 PM
I think you guys are a bunch of tree huggin' idiots to tell ya the truth. Painting deer to save their lifes? Dumbest thing iv ever heard.
Posted by: Buckshot | April 1, 2007 02:12 PM
Im 14 years old and I cant believe how stupid you peta members are. You all are either vegtarians or hipicrits and if your vegatarian then just do your thing and dont screw with hunters and if your a hipicrit then get your head out of your ass. If you outlawed hunting more animals would die then with hunting they would starve from exhausting their food supplies and have dozens of diseases from their overpopulation.
Posted by: Aaron Ramirez | April 1, 2007 02:22 PM
Not bad cammo, im sure they know its going to be gone by the time seasion opens.
Posted by: mike | April 1, 2007 02:31 PM
Me, you give hunters a bad name just by opening your mouth, so dont talk. As for you Kelly that is a very disresptful thing to say. I have been hunting for the better part of 5 years now and you would never know unless I started talking about it. There is a difference between killing and hunting, a real hunter appreciates every day that he gets in the field regardless if he kills something or not. It isnt about killing an animal, it is admiring animals in their natural habitat. And whether you admit it or not, the only reason many animals are still here today are because of us. We create, protect, and manage habitat for thousands of different animals.
Posted by: John | April 1, 2007 02:41 PM
Speaking of being stupid...."somne" isn't actually a word there idiot. It's spelled some, and I bet that I am smarter than most camouflage painting morons. I mean a deer thrives by smell, those deer are gonna be running scared to death for days from smelling the paint.
Posted by: speaking for all hunters | April 1, 2007 02:57 PM
Kelly, you are an idiot.
Only in your sheltered world and miniscule circle of friends do "most" people laugh at hunters.
There are nearly as many hunting/fishing licenses sold in one state alone as PETA has in it's whole worldwide membership.
Get a grip on reality!!
All my best.
Posted by: TR | April 1, 2007 03:01 PM
Wow...Wow...God you people are dumb...you might as well torture those deer. or how about when they all get wiped out by cars at night because they cant be seen... Also it's pretty bad when an anti hunter thinks what you do is inhumane! If you want to do somthing productive... paint them with some great tasting marinade! YUM!
Posted by: BuckRogers | April 1, 2007 04:01 PM
Does that really work? I can see how you can miss them on a precursory glance, but it just doesn't seem like it would help that much...
Posted by: J. Teeple | April 1, 2007 04:19 PM
Kelly, I must apologize for calling you an idiot. I seriously doubt that is the case.
Young and misinformed is more likely the situation.
Best regards.

The camouflaged deer is pretty adorable. I bet his buddies can't wait to get their cute new lifesaving outfits too!
Posted by: Hillary | April 1, 2007 05:27 PM
Are you really this gullible??? First off, IF that picture is suppose to come off as recent, then your dumber then this blog is....Do you really believe that the woods are that green & filled in this time of the year in Minn.?
As to the picture, do you not know photoshop when you see it?
What purpose would it serve to camo the already camo part of the deer and not paint the very visual white on the animal?
How many times have you or any of the dimwits claiming to be involved in this deal every took the time to sit in the woods and observe deer in the wild??? A lack of camo is one of the VERY last thing a deer has to worry about...it is absolutely amazing how easy & quickly a deer can disappear in the woods, even with you looking right at it. With the drab background of the fall woods, and the shadows & bright spots provided in the wild the Good Lord has provided the deer all the camo it would ever need...some added green and black isn't going to help in that category at all.
PETA comes up with some dumb ideals daily, but this one takes the cake at proving that you all know very little about the sport that you so hate (hunting) and even less about the animals you claim to want to protect.
Posted by: AR redneck | April 1, 2007 05:44 PM
Y'all know what day it is, right?
Posted by: TR | April 1, 2007 05:58 PM
Ok, I did a little checking and I can find no valid information on any organization called HIDE (Hunting is Down Right Evil). That automatically makes this whole story total bullshit. Unless you can come up with some creditable data Jack then those baby blue eyes should be brown, because you are full of it.
Second if there is someone out there who is entertaining this idea, they had better think twice, since the drugs used to tranquilize animals is a controlled chemical and requires a permit to own and use. Not to mention darting wild deer is completely illegal, but if you are a PETA supporter then laws of any type don't apply to you since you break them on an almost daily basis.
Third, it would be completely asinine to think that you could improve on natures own camouflage. That only goes to show that these so called animal lovers know nothing about nature, animals and the natural circle of life. I ask all you PETA morons, have you ever seen a wild deer, in its natural environment? With the answer probably being "NO" that would explain why you would think this was a neat idea.
I also notice that you don’t post any of my comments Jack. Are you scared of me? Perhaps it is because I use a false name and email address to discourage pranksters. I am not stupid enough to give you any personnel information as you PETA people have no scruples and capable of most any atrocity. Perhaps I should come to Norfolk and introduce myself, and then we can have an intelligent conversation about how stupid you people are acting.
I also noticed that you only post the comments from the opposition, that have lots of errors in them. I assume to advance you’re “Hunters are stupid†theory, or maybe you change them before posting. Either way I have an idea. Make the BLOG an open forum and let every one fight it out, or are you the cowards I always took you for and not will to fight fair.

hi folks,
i must say that a camo deer is a great ideal.. it would make sure that those stupid hunters wouldnt be able to spot a deer at all!!!!! ohhhh wait a second they would be able to spot deer as long as they are in the wood..but most hunter wait until the deer is in the clear before shooting at them, and deehunter also use their ears as well as their eyse to hunt and you can here a deer coming from a ways off if they are scrapping or grunting. so i guess us stupid hunters will still have lots of fresh meat to eat and heads to hang on our walls..mmmm i love deer meat.. anyways i hope all of you nice folks live happy with your store bought meats that are packed with all kinds of nice healthy stuff like growth hormones and fat and for all of you murdous vegetarians out there who kill innocent carrots..you sould be ashamed of yaselves

Posted by: john | April 1, 2007 08:39 PM
all you peta people do is take credit for the good things that hunters do then try to use it against us. and if you thing you can improve natures own camouflage, your wrong. i was walkin through the woods today and scared two deer that were 5 yards from me. i didnt even see them till they jumped up and ran off. also all you peta people kill all your precious animals when you build your 1,000,000 homes. if you really wanted to help them. quit building your homes in there homes and give them something back
Posted by: mark | April 1, 2007 09:53 PM
this is to Todd Edwards
sportsmen (hunters/fishermen) have done more for wildlife in this country than any anti-hunting organization. also, eco-terrorism is a BAD thing, it destroys property and lives, (peta sponsors it, look it up)
even if HIDE does exist, tranquilizing deer and painting them can't be good for the animals. anyone who has been in the fall woods would be happy to say that the natural coloration of deer is an extremely effective camoflage.
a final note: this is for the group of people who know about wildlife (not peta, i know you guys get confused)
thanks for posting, keep buying licenses, and morel mushrooms are a great compliment to grilled venison.
Posted by: Larry Buck | April 1, 2007 10:24 PM
The only reason animals get overpopulated in certain areas is that humans have taken their habitat. If you leave them alone in an area with a proper eco-system then animals control their own populations with natural predators. Some animals don't breed when there isn't enough food or water.Old and young animals can die but it is the survival of the fittest which makes them have a stronger gene pool.
It is humans that have ruined this earth to the point that so called 'hunters' seem to think they are justified.
Posted by: Me2 | April 1, 2007 11:10 PM
Wow, just wanted to say thank you PETA. As a confirmed outdoorsman and hunter for almost 10 years, I get as much entertainment from the crazy stuff you come up with as I do from tinkering with my guns, bows and other equipment. Keep up the great work guys and gals, I'll be sitting in a tree come fall remembering this and laughing to myself (at least until lunch steps out and gives me a shot.)
Posted by: Laughing in Georgia | April 1, 2007 11:54 PM
Um, can't we all just get along? Seriously, this is getting way to shrill and ridiculous (when the original story was ridiculous enough).
In the interest of full disclosure, I'll start by saying that I am a PETA member. But I do not "break laws on a daily basis" or otherwise, aside from occasionally jaywalking (though walking anywhere is probably illegal here in LA).
Anyway, some valid points are being made on both sides, but everyone seems to be forgetting one thing... this was posted on April Fool's Day. I give Jack's "source" big points for creativity, but as a graphic designer of over 15 years, this image looks suspiciously and conspicuously "Photoshopped" to me.
We've been had, folks. But cheer up... at least it was well executed.

This has got to be the dumbest fucking Idea I have ever heard of...Camoflageing deer...you would think people could come up with a better way to waste good tax payers money....none the less the damn paint would kill the fucking deer anyway let alone some..not all...of the fucking deer will be shot and eaten to feed the faces of many starving people around the country...but oh wait thats right you belong to PETA you know everything there is to know about anything...I catch one of you in fucking woods I will kill you...no ifs and or buts...Shoot shovel and shut up....simple procedure.

Hey dumb fucks, When hunting season starts, deer will grow out their winter coats! Then the camo is gone! Didn't think of that did ya... you fucking brainless scums of the earth. Why don't you start killing deer with a more potent dose of tranquilizers so hunters can kill them! It's humane right? You did it with dogs and cats...
You big ass hypocrites...

Now we know what kind of people think it is sporting to shoot deer
Posted by: kelly | April 2, 2007 01:20 AM
I am not surprised by all this "comments". U.S citizen often view themselves as super-heroes. I can understand that the hunters think that with such a "sport" they are saving deer and the whole planet.. Every time a bunch of morons go to the "wild" to become Indians or Tarzan they leave a trail of garbage, destruction and dead.
Hunters, racists, born again christians ...all product of the same "light" culture, the plastic fantastic culture, the convenient and fast-food culture and the money-buys-all culture. I would be happy if you all hunters can grab a book at least once a year.
What a waist of time, resources and energy on this so-called "sport"..no wander this is a prozac country...
Posted by: Gerardo | April 2, 2007 01:28 AM
the picture is fake, look at the antlers, the surroundings look too green to be anything but spring,(especially in minnesota) and the antlers would have dropped by then. look at the ears,, they are too "shiny". this is not hunting season, so no one would be writing in anger. the eyes dont match up.
it is stories such as this that proves how ignorant peta is. they have no clue about the great american deer hunt. keep your kids away from them.

Hunters are incredibly stupid and selfish. Reading the comments they posted was like a comic show. 99.9 percent of them are illiterate fools. Animals have a right to live freely without some jack@ss w/o an education killing them. I suppose hunters think this show they are TOUGH MEN. How sad....Make it fair to the animals & use your bare hands. If it was done like this, the dumb hunters would be the one's that were killed. Not so tough now, are we??
Posted by: Shannon W. | April 2, 2007 01:26 PM
People who kill animals are heartless fools. Hunters are too scared to use their hands to kill the animals, so they hide behind their guns.....Buck, Billy Bob, Jim Bob, Joe Bob, and Billy Sue need to stop hunting and pursue an education.

Posted by: Arise | April 2, 2007 02:06 PM

The joke is certainly on these hunter types who seem to think they know everything, yet they cannot get through one sentence without serious spelling and grammatical errors! They sure spent a lot of time "dissing" us tree-hugging, granola-crunching types, to the point that they did not even consider that it was an April Fool's joke - HA HA!!!
I guess they should read the research that shows that vegetarians and vegans have higher IQs than meat-eaters.

The most disturbing thing I've read here so far is what Jim had to say. He is the 8th one down from the top.
I hope you end up in jail too! If you were not serious, that sure isn't anything to joke about. Just sick! That's more sick than a painted deer!!

I think ALL you jack asses should check your calendar, it's April 1st you know...
Posted by: Craig Petersen | April 2, 2007 03:28 PM
I dont think the picture is real, and i dont think that this idea would work even if it was real. The problem isnt in the animals not being camoflaged enough, it's with the humans hunting them. They're deer - they're born with better camoflage than you could ever hope to put on them. You're just making them look funny. Traps don't care if a deer is camoflaged. If you want to stop hunting, you need to stop the hunter. I don't agree with hunting and I think it's good that you're trying to do something about it, but please put some more effort into the thought. If anything, you're just making the hunters go after more deer because they can't put the painted ones on their walls.
Posted by: Hambone | April 2, 2007 03:48 PM
Simply put, I would love to hunt hunters.
Posted by: Let's Hunt Hunters | April 2, 2007 04:20 PM
This has to be the funniest thing I have ever read. LOL
Deer are naturally camouflaged, so in reality, you are taking something that GOD made naturaly and ruining it. Wonderful idea. Hope it isn't too costly, especially since deer will molt their summer coats and have a new winter coat by the time most hunting seasons open. Great idea though. Keep up the wonderful work. HAHAHAHAA
Its a shame I read this today, April fools day would have been much more fitting to read something this silly.
Next week, in hopes of slowing burger consumption, PETA plans on painting thousands of beef cattle to look like lettuce.
Future plans also include: Painting chickens to look like tomatoes, turkeys disguised as carrots and pigs that look like potatoes.
At which point, the massive population of meat eaters will become extremely confused and not know where their meat has gone to. Bringing about a nation-wide mandatory vegatarian diet.
I will make sure to include plenty of "lettuce", "tomatoes", "carrots" and "potatoes" in my diet.
LOL....
If I ever think of something as stupid as "camouflaging" deer, please put me out of my misery. LOL
Posted by: Tree Hugger | April 2, 2007 05:18 PM
ok, for the hillbilly moron saying that the world would be "effed" up without hunting and trapping: mountain lion attacks are up?! you mean maybe we're building more into their natural habitat?! how dare those damn cats live on what is rightfully our prime real estate! the only reason hunting is around is because animals are seen as a nuisance since they dare to show their furry hides in our suburbs. I'm no vegan, i love some deer chili, but i also understand that stuff like, say, rednecks with a bad beer buzz and a hunting rifle should be strictly monitored
Posted by: Nicole | April 2, 2007 06:36 PM
i think that you peta people are the stupidist fuckers on the face of the earth. and if hunters are so stupid then how did we get into so far into politics.
also you guys kill more animals than us when you build your $1,000,000 homes. and what have you ever done for animals besides kill them.
hunters do more for them than you guys ever will and thats a fact. and if you ever do banish hunting all your precious animals will disapear because conservation groups will shut down.
and how would you like it if we released wolves and bears in your backyards and then they started eating your cats and dogs
Posted by: the peta know nothing | April 2, 2007 06:54 PM
Yeah its a april fools joke so what but you think its easy to do what we do for one animal. If you think its easy for us how about the slaughter houses where the animals sit in a small cage for their short pointless lives before getting put on a conveaur belt so a large ice pick and go through the top of their head.Yeah my grammor sucks who cares get a life.

Great April Fools joke. It's too bad not many people know how to read and comprehend. PETA was ostensibly "reporting" about this "organization". HIDE (which, of course, is non-existent) is not PETA. Has no-one heard the expression, "Don't shoot the messenger".

So you retarded PETA people think you can do a better job than God camoflauging deer from hunters. it's obvious you people are dumber than we thought! Hunters love and want to perserve deer MORE than any of you.
You idiots don't realize deer are a renewable resource, just like crops, and when properly managed, flourish for everyone's benefit.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you just how good deer taste. I especially like to slice their backstraps, season, flour, and fry in olive oil. Mmm good eating right there. I can't wait to take my kids hunting again this year. I'm so proud of my son, he killed 3 himself last year.
I'm glad you jerks don't eat deer, that just leaves more for me and my family.
Take care and God bless.
Posted by: J. | April 2, 2007 10:14 PM
Tree hugger you the man, you said it all perfectly. Would it be mean of me to wish whoever thought of this, that someone close to them get seriously hurt in an accident with a deer because it blends in with night fall.
Anyone who hunts knows that deer are hard to spot in the woods how it is....and besides the whole molting thing lol.....if a deer walked under my tree stand i would know its a deer....you have got to be kidding me.
i would like to see how many cars hit deer after just 2 years without deer hunting. It wouldnt even be safe to drive anymore, it would be scary.
As for the hunters who are being dumb, be respectful, we dont need to give these guys anymore fuel for the fire.
We as hunters can sit back and have a good laugh at this because we know whats going to happen come fall.
We also know that painting an animal is far worse torture then hunting will ever do to them.
So as hard as it may be to stop yourselves from calling them morons, just sit back and enjoy a nice laugh, because if this is all they can spend their money on then we are guaranteed to be hunting for hundreds of years to come, just like everyones ancestors did to live long enough to give them them the right to do such stupid things.
P.S. i really dont think there is anyway that is real, they cant be that stupid. I think they are getting exactly what they want....hunters going crazy over this. Just like Britney's boobs....... its fake.

In defense of the hunters. Don't let these ridiculous posts serve as representation for all of us. Sometimes the PETA comments left on some of our sites are just as intelligent. "oh my god!!!!???!!! how could you kill a (enter random game animal here)!?!? they are sooooo cute!!! i just want to cuddle one up and love it forever!!! tehe!!" You know... That type.
When we live in such a wonderful country, I just don't understand why we have to bicker and take cheap shots at each other like this. It's horribly immature coming from either side.

Posted by: Tim Hunter | April 3, 2007 11:36 AM
Hey, Hunters are very STUPID that is why so many of them shoot each other every year!!
By the way I live in PA and I have wild deer and turkey in my backyard everyday!!! Everytime I see a hunter hunting right off of my property shooting a turkey or deer I scream at them "Hey Asshole, I hope it poisons you or you get real damn sick off of the meat"! Unfortunately, that is how you have to talk to hunters because they are so UNEDUCATED and TOTALLY IMMATURE about our environment. I don't think they are smart enough to realize that within so many decades there won't be a lot of wonderful animals in this world left. Due to hunters and their nonstop hunger for greed there will come a time whenever our entire world will suffer!! There will come a day when the only animals that you will be able to see will be at the zoo due to so many being killed for fur or other parts of their bodies to sell!

PETA I think every thing you do is great. And I love your website thanks to you I am now vegetarian. And would NEVER go to the circus or wear fur. anyways good job on the deer.
Posted by: caroline | April 3, 2007 03:18 PM
I would guess that probably 90% of the comments on here from "hunters" are made by these PETA loonies trying to make us look unintellegent. Keep up the good work.
Posted by: george donald | April 3, 2007 05:29 PM
I love it when people who try to sound smart can't even spell "intelligent" correctly - hee hee! (see the post from "george donald").
Hunters don't need PETA people to make them look stupid - they do a fantastic job all by themselves.
Posted by: Michele | April 3, 2007 08:49 PM
ok... So unless someone else goes by BuckRogers, whoever runs this website changed what I said completely!lol wow. Basically what I said was that the principle was a great idea just use a good marinade instead of paint. mmmm.
"Everytime I see a hunter hunting right off of my property shooting a turkey or deer I scream at them "Hey Asshole, I hope it poisons you or you get real damn sick off of the meat"!" As far as this comment goes... In most if not all states disrupting a hunter that is legally taking game is against the law and can and should be punishable by jail and fines.
"Unfortunately, that is how you have to talk to hunters because they are so UNEDUCATED and TOTALLY IMMATURE about our environment." This comment cracked me up. First off I am a college student as we speak and I am damn smart. As far as being uneducated about the environment...I live in Iowa where the deer absolutely decimate crops in many areas across the state, what do you think will happen if we didnt have a deer season? Also, (I love asking this question) answer TRUTHFULLY even though you wont... How much money have you spent/donated to conservation groups whose money goes into habitat restoration and protection? Also, how much of your time have you donated to such causes instead of sitting on your lazy arse harrassing your nice neighbor?
P.S. I really dont know why I wrote this, maybe to open a few "squinting" eyes that are heading into the burning, blinding sun that is PETA, because as far as the hardcore PETA members go, I might as well be telling this to my cat. Although he too is a hunter and knows the value of population control ;-)
I write back to tell you if they actually posted what I wrote this time or just changed it.

Wow. I realize this was a joke out of good fun and even I had to laugh about it, but the replies were no longer funny when it the maturity level of 'you are this, you are that' started to come out. I am a hunter yes, and like 'hunter' said closer to the bottom, please do not take what some immature ''hunters'' represent all of us are being dumb and blood thirsty. True, I don't agree with PETA most of the time but I still respect how they feel because I was raised that way; To respect what people think regardless if I agree or disagree.

I wish I could hunt hunters. It's only fair.
Posted by: Sean | April 4, 2007 03:31 PM
Hey, idiots...didn't you look at the calender? and the date this was posted? ~giggles~ and hunters wonder why we call them dumb :)
Posted by: serinity | April 5, 2007 12:54 AM
1st of all, I would consider darting deer to be less humane than hunting them. Many deer die when tranqulized.
I also wonder how people can love wolves, hawks, eagles, bears, couger's, etc. and love the fact that these predators kill and eat other animals, but hate me for doing the same? I am a native American, I have always had the greatest respect for wildlife. God gave me canine teeth, the eyes of a predator, and mind of a hunter. We are just doing what we were put on earth to do.. Just like other predators... I often wonder if the people who are so against hunting have an unfounded fear of death?
Death happens to every critter, us included. To die humanly and be eaten, is better than the way nature kills.
Posted by: Dan | April 5, 2007 05:11 PM
Sean,
I wish you would attempt to hunt me. I have more "woods sense" in my left big toe than you have in your entire body.
Also if you actually went hunting instead of merely judging it based on your biased uninformed views, you might learn that hunters are first and foremost outdoors enthusiasts. I love spending time outside whether I shoot something or not. Maybe you and all your vegan cronies should spend some actual time outdoors with nature instead of sitting in some city miles from wildlife pretending to know what the wild animals feel.
I have personally purchased several acres of woodland which will never be plowed down and serves as a sanctuary and home to over 70 species of mammals and birds, I only hunt 3 of them. What have you ever done in your lifetime to help animals besides merely argue against the people who know them best?
Posted by: Dusty | April 5, 2007 10:05 PM
This was a pretty lame joke. I mean seriously who would want to waste their valuable time painting deer who would shed out the paint in a month or so anyway. It's just kind of rediculous. It's just plain stupid to paint the natural camoflauge and leave the distinctive white spots. "Good Job GUYS!" People look at the photo, can you say "Photoshop"? And people need to get a little self-control! PETA people you can eat all vegetables and 'protect' the animals, but don't give hunters a bad name by saying they are all dumbass stupid rednecks who go out into the woods and shoot every living thing that walks by. And hunters, just leave the PETA people alone. If they want to allow the deer population to get so huge that Cronic Wasting disease and other sicknesses become normal and the deer who don't get ill die from startvation, just let them. I mean they 'are protecting' the animals by putting up little jokes like this, buying carrots instead of beef, and by never ever ever hitting an animal by accident on the highway. Oh, and I bet all the PETA people don't live on land that used to be natural and full of wildlife. Nope I bet they live on little house that are on stilts that have been lifted off the ground so they didn't disturb the habitat! Yep that's how it probably is! haha...ALso to all people I hate it when hunters are taken as cold-blooded killers. Hunting and killing are two totally different things. Hunting is going into the wilderness and watching nature in all its glory, undisturbed. Also not all hunters are stupid rednecks. I have been a hunter since I was old enough to own a license and I am a college educated woman! Outside the lines of typical hunter huh?

first of all painting a deer camo aint gonna help a thing
us hunters can still see'm
do you think it makes e'm invisible or something dumass

Wow, you guys make me laugh. Painting deer camo??? If I see one these "camo deer" I can't wait to shoot it and send you guys a picture!
Posted by: Donnie | April 6, 2007 11:06 PM
Way to go "deer slayer" and "Donnie" - you must not have noticed the calendar date on the entry - and even if that passed you by, you certainly didn't read anything beyond that, because if you had, you "dumass"es (it's spelled "dumb-ass" you twit!) would have noticed just a FEW references to the fact that it was an APRIL FOOL's joke.
So, for all of you "brilliant" hunters out there, GET SOME SKILLS AND READ FOR GOODNESS' SAKE!!!!!
For those of you hunters who keep denying that there is a lack of intelligence amongst your group, there sure are plenty of your "kind" who keep proving there is indeed something lacking...

in response to comment made by me.....
You think the world will be f*cked up if hunting was banned, what f*cking planet are you living on. My Dad and I use to hunt, let me tell you something, every hunter's uses the same fucking excuse. Form of ANIMAL POPULATION CONTROL.
Hunting in any form is ignorance, and f*cking cowardly. (unless for survival)
To all Hunters, it's easy not to shit yourself when your not the one about to die.
Hunters. Bunch of Pussies!!
Posted by: pcb | April 8, 2007 01:29 PM
This cracks me up! Do you really think that painting an animal is going to hind him any better?
This comment is to everyone out there for or against eating animals. Because we as humans exist things will die and nothing is ever going to change that.
Posted by: Jason Lindbom | April 8, 2007 09:13 PM
in all honesty, that was a pretty good april fools joke.
but...
read a few of the comments, the ones that highlight how much hunters help wildlife, about how much hunters know about the animals, about how we keep the animals from overpopulating and eventually facing a mass die-off.
also...
peta is very vocal and assholistic about its opinions and their message hits the fan all the time, hunters are normally peaceful toward peta, but when they notice something as stupid as painting deer, they're gonna react. anyone who truly understands wildlife would.
look at both sides of the arguement, i have, and i choose to enjoy my burger as well as my freedom
Dusty, Dan, A hunter, the rest who know what they're talking about, drive on
Gerardo...if you were buried up to your neck in sand, it would not be enough sand.
a final note
don't hunt hunters, they can shoot better than you.
Posted by: Larry Buck | April 9, 2007 12:46 AM
OMG! There are still people writing here who, despite the NUMEROUS messages above, still actually think that someone painted camouflage on a deer!!!!!
IT. WAS. A. JOKE. DUHHHHH Larry!
And Larry, I hope you enjoy the cholesterol/anti-biotic/growth hormone burgers that you proudly claim that you eat - YUMMY!
Posted by: Michele | April 9, 2007 12:29 PM
By shooting deer (or any other wild animal) with tranquilizers or any other means not expressly allowed under law and without holding a valid license to do so in the way prescribed by law those who do this are breaking Minnesota's and any other states' wildlife laws.
Even if there are any deer that would miss being harvested by you doing this, which I doubt, what do you prefer, death of more deer by being spattered across the roads and highways and those drivers injured and killed when the deer come through the windshields or make drivers lose control? There is an over population of deer in MN, Wisc. and most other states. This very misguided.
Just so you understand, you will be turned in as poachers (TIP). http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/enforcement/tip.html.

Michele
re-read the first line of my post, really. (OMG!)
i like vegetables too, they go well with meat.
Posted by: Larry Buck | April 9, 2007 10:11 PM
Michele - Do you really think that all meat has growth hormones, anti-biotics in it?
We raise cattle that don't see any of that other than there vaccinations for diseases. If they do get sick they are treated with an all natural non anti-biotics bolusses.
To each is own as to the way we live.
Hunting is here to stay as the goverment makes to much money from taxes and permits to ever shut it down, besides it is heart heathly meat to eat as it is hormone and antibiotic free and also very low in cholesteral. You ought to give it a try! :)
Take care
Posted by: Jason Lindbom | April 10, 2007 10:20 AM
Since almost 99% of animals are factory farmed, most meat does come from cows that are pumped full of antibiotics, etc.
While I advocate for a vegan diet (for many reasons: animal welfare, the environment, health,...), my biggest problem is not with farmers who raise a small amount of animals in a humane way, where the animals get to graze and eat what they are supposed to eat, and when cows are not artificially kept lactating.
However, even without the antibiotics, etc, animal cholesterol is bad for humans for many reasons - check out www.pcrm.org and PETA's fact sheets for those reasons (from sound medical research, not from research sponsored by companies and organizations that have a vested interest in "proving" that their products are healthy for humans).
Larry, your post included the following: "hunters are normally peaceful toward peta, but when they notice something as stupid as painting deer, they're gonna react. anyone who truly understands wildlife would", so that is why I was pointing out that NOBODY painted any deer. As you can see from "John"'s post from April 9th, he is yet another individual who still does not get that no animals were tranquilized nor painted.
Larry, I challenge you to watch PETA's "Meet Your Meat" and "Chew on This" videos (http://www.petatv.com/veg.html). This is why I will never eat meat or any animals products again. Maybe you will try to find other foods that go well with vegetables - my 10 year old son loves couscous, and "chicken" nuggets, as well as veggie burgers from Harvey's, which is a large chain of fast-food restaurants in Canada. I hear that Burger King's veggie burgers are also very good. I figure that if my son likes something, most other people would as well.
Posted by: Michele | April 10, 2007 12:08 PM
Michele,
thank you for the film recommendations, after watching them, it did pain me to see their suffering.
anyone with a love and respect for wildlife (most hunters) would have to feel sadness about wanton suffering
I have my opinions, you have yours
Posted by: Larry Buck | April 10, 2007 11:24 PM
Larry, I am glad you had a chance to watch those videos and that you are as concerned as I and others are. I hope you can convince others to check out those videos too.
You are right, we do have different opinions, but I believe that most people can agree on at least one thing, even if they have very opposing views about other things. We do seem to agree that senseless killing is wrong with respect to factory farming and inhumane slaughter practices.
You seem interested in getting a better idea of what PETA is all about, as I have seen your name on a couple of other entries that I have been reading lately.
I am curious to know how you feel about wearing fur (not about native peoples who had to wear fur to survive, but those who just wear it as a fashion accessory and who have plenty of non-fur options) or about animal testing. Besides hunting, these are some other serious issues that animal rights people feel passionate about, and I think you are open to knowing more about them. Anyway, I just wondered if we had even more opinions in common than we may have believed before.
I think most animal rights people are realistic in knowing that they are never going to instantly change everyone's opinions about vegetarianism, hunting, or animal testing, and I like to think that I am one of those people. When I am talking to friends or co-workers who do not really know about these issues, I try to get people to consider making kinder choices whenever they can (like using humane traps to get rid of mice in one's home, instead of using glue traps for example).
Anyway, I hope that some of the things you have been reading about on these blogs and on PETA's main websites have had at least a small impact on you, and that you will see that we just want to end animal suffering and are not all crazy, tree-hugging, granola-crunching hippies :))

Posted by: chip | April 12, 2007 09:58 PM
Thank you Michelle! You are a beautiful example of an animal rights advocate. I was very pleased and proud to read your positive and helpful comments.
I am a supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and I think humans have an unbalanced amount of power on our planet. This fact absolutely behooves us to be more thoughtful, more educated and more compassionate toward our fellow earthlings. We can do better. Building, so much that we adversely affect other living populations, and then try to rectify this unbalance by killing them for "sport" or some misguided, supposed attempt at being humane, doesn't make sense to me. I think we as a civilized society are better than that and we can do better, we just have to care.

I represent most hunters and I'm gonna like eating the dead animal i hunts this season with my new rifel. Me and my sister and our five children love to eat meet, its so juicy for you. They say we are insest, but our kids still is smart cause theys eat meet and other dead animals.

Duh.
Hunters are not unintelligent.
I'm a vegitarian, and have been for nearly eight years.
I, in no way, condone hunting.
But this is all just ridiculous.
And the post by 'Eli' is obviously fake. Dude. Your obvious attempt at discrediting hunters and making them look stupid is transparent. Hunters are not nessecarily rednecks. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, and if you want to eat meat, go ahead. I can't stop you. I just tell you what you're doing to yourself when you do.

Thank you so much for your positive comments Kealey - I think that it is very uplifting when fellow animal rights advocates get together (in person or in cyberspace) and share their opinions, experiences, and ideas.
PETA has completely changed my life - I had become vegetarian as soon as I joined PETA, but was not vegan at that time. It was when I attended their "Helping Animals 101" conference about 6 months later that I realized just how much eating dairy and other animal products supports animal cruelty, and I instantly became a vegan.
My co-worker Diana is the one that got me involved with the animal rights movement, and at our desks which are in a corner area of the office, we have all kinds of literature and stickers available to anyone who is interested. It is great even just to share a tasty vegan recipe with someone who wonders "just what do you eat anyway?"
Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement!

Ok, i'm no hunter, but what you are doing, way out of line. I am learning thru some very knowledgable hunters so that I can one day. However, I find your tactics inhumane and certainly not sane. That paint has got to be harmful to the animal. By the way, do YOU have a permit or license to tranqualize these animals and paint them? I think I will take a look into that myself.

For someone to think up this joke, well, pretty sick person and no doubt in my mind, they actually are thinking about doing it. So the moron in all this is the blogger, I'm sure you got a laugh, but we'll all still be eating deer. So you my fried, are a hopless piece of shit that can not be cured. To even think as a joke that would be funny, you should be kicked out of PETA. Your the danger to wild life. Care to go hunting with us???

WTF painting dear thats more cruel than hunting are you people IDIOTS! your against hunting i can accept that but if you've ever lived in a remote village in Alaska you'd understand why hunting is necessary. People up here have to hunt to feed their families if they didn't their families would go Hungary, because were not like you we can't just drive to the store or even take a boat or a plane to do that we'd have to wait two weeks and most of the time you can't do that.

Posted by: jon | March 27, 2008 07:41 PM
I don't understand a group of people that are trying to protect animals harming them.
The paint is absorbed through the skin and into the blood stream of the animal. Thus making there blood toxic and leaves them at risk for deformed births, dead fetus, or poisioning the host.
Way to go PETA!

you are all morons for falling for it
Posted by: Nathan G. | March 28, 2008 01:57 PM
Just to point out a slight flaw in the overall PETA theme. I noticed at the top ot the web page the young man laying on his desk was wearing nice cotton jeans and shirt. Cotton is the most heavily sprayed crop grown for the textile industry. It is sprayed up to ten times in a season with an insecticide that is so potent that with in minutes of the spray settleing on the foliage and ground NOTHING moves again. Toads, ladybugs, mantis, mice, snakes, baby bunnies anything that was alive dies immediately. So buying cotton clothing is probably one of the most detrimental things you can do environmentally. The label vegan means to harm no living thing and it is the ultimate hypocrisy to call yourself that and wear cotton. Your lovely denim jeans came at a much higher price to innocent creatures than the most vigorous and dedicated hunter could possibly match.

Great idea, while you're at it why not camo paint some grizzly bears and mountain lions... Wait! Catch all of the mourning doves, pheasants, wild turkeys, squirrels, prairie dogs, groundhogs, mountain goats, stone sheep, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, moose, elk, caribou, baby harp seals and camoflage those species too. Next year you can go around and camo all of the newborns and the cycle starts over. This should keep you busy and keep you from sticking your nose in everyone's business through eternity. Hey if you write me a nice long letter, I'll even donate $1.00 for your cause.

Greetings PETA and Hunters Alike:
I have an ongoing, long term, regrettable dilemma and I am interested in learning from those with more experience in property destruction as a result of neighbor's setting out feed stations for Turkey and Deer. You see, each lot here is 1/4 acre or less. We often look at 80-100 turkeys and 20-40 deer in a miniscule spot as the neighbors dump 240 pounds of corn below our lot each week. Sanitation and rat infestation aside, we are looking at total destruction of our hillside, any possible attempts at landscaping, fencing not allowed. Attempts at civil dialogue, requests, eventual cease and desist orders only serve to escalate the human feeding behavior. Then the Coyotes come for a free turkey meal. The lions move in for the deer. Then we cannot walk in the evenings. So kind people, Seeing that the CA Dept. of Fish and Game is not interested until after a catastrophe has occured, I would deeply appreciate any wisdom from experience. We have tried motion detector sprinklers to no avail. The trapper is disinterested in re-locating that many domesticated wild animals, and we do not wish to simply open fire on a mass slaughter in order to preserve our home. Suggestions? Thank you.
Posted by: Concerned and curious | February 17, 2009 07:14 PM
Yep, I like the deer camo idea. Because then hunters actually use their brain for once when they notice that something is wrong.
Though they still don’t understand what spell-check is, because they are too pissed to actually consider how bad their grammar is.
And also why is it they cannot write in a less lude manner… I mean they cannot seem to hold an argument without using at least one curse word.
Yeah, and it was April 1st so they are that much dumber for falling for the joke
So to all you trigger hugging hunters, “ Kill Yourself” Oh and this is a military term, not meant to be taking as lude, though I am not really cursing, I am just stating my opinion on what you should do, So as to reduce the hunters due to their increase in stupidity. Yeah I am not so good at Grammar either so, whatever.

ok first off if u knew anything about animals u would know that if an animal is under a lot of stress ( getting shot with a trankulizer gun) it can kill them and another thing is that deer are naturaly camoflaged if u had spent any time in the woods before u came up with this stupid idea u would know that and lastly a deer's fur is its most effective weapon they have aginst preditors there fur is hollow so that the hot air given off by their body is traped and it keeps them even warmer if you cover that hair in paint then it cant b very good for that and also deer's noses are one of the most sensitive of all animals so when you cover their entire body with cemicals like paint it would be like if u had to walk around with ur face in a jar of vicks vapor rub all day idk about u but that doesnt sound very humain to me

hunting is not evil. hunting is the reason civilization exists today. just because you may kill a deer does not mean you disrespect it. I'm a high school student and I have my first deer hunt next fall. that does not mean i dont respect animals. i love them and respect nature but hunting is a fair game and if the hunter follows all the regulations and doesn't take more deer than he/she should, it is not inhumane. also, more deer die from cars than by hunting. you need to stop treating hunting like genocide and more like part of the natural cycle of our ecosystem.
