As you probably know, PETA VP Dan Mathews has a book coming out next month: Committed: A Rabble Rouser’s Memoir. Both Dan and the book have been getting some great endorsements lately, and these are a few of my favorites:

“I’d marry him if he wasn’t a fag.”
-Chrissie Hynde

"If you read one book this year (like me), this is it.”
-Tommy Lee

“Outrageous and inspiring. Makes me want to get arrested again.”
-Andy Dick

P.S. For anyone who may have been offended by Chrissie Hynde's comment, which is technically a misuse of the subjunctive mood, there are some great resources here.

As a gay man, I find the use of the word fag to be sad. I am an active Peta member and thing its pretty low for the website to use the term.
Blacks dont like being called a nigger and more than Italins like being called a wop, in the same vein I dont like being called a fag either.

I live in St. Louis, Missouri and am a huge supporter of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). They have this annual event called Bark in the Park to raise money for shelter animals. This year (I was appalled to find out) they are giving away a trip to SeaWorld for the top team who raises the most money.

How does this happen? Conflict of interest I guess since Anheuser-Busch operates out of St. Louis and owns SeaWorld. Anyway, please write the CEO of HSUS a polite letter stating that places like SeaWorld are inhumane and taking large exotic animals out of their habitat and exploiting them for humane entertainment is unnecessary and something that the HSUS should not condone. Just last week 25 of the 37 penguins at SeaWorld Orlando died.

Please, Please, Please help out. Here is the CEO's information:

Mr. Wayne Pacelle
Chief Executive Officer
Humane Society of the United States
2100 L Street, NW
Washington, DC 20037

Please mail and fax a copy of your letter:
fax# 301-258-3077

Thanks you SO much for all your efforts!

ha-ha -hah! Chrissie Hind is such a riot. So is Andy Dick for that matter. Think I'll buy this book for my boyfriend since he is always interested in the plight and accomplishments of heroes and Dan Matthews certainly wears the superman cape IMO.

JJ has a good point, but a fag is also a British cigarette, no? Now if he was an American cigarette she would have married him. Jack, did I just screw up the subjunctive?

who cares if the word fag is used????? there are far more important issues in the world then if your poor little heart is hurt by that small word when there are millions of animals being slaughtered tortured and beaten and yet your more concerned about being called a fag, check out furisdead.com and watch the videos im sure called a fag will seem meaningless!! get a back bone!! it still is a country of freedom of speech right??? sunshine, WI

True, Kris, there are more heinous forms of cruelty going on in the world. And hell, Chrissie Hynde is who I want to be when I grow up. But words DO have an enormous impact on how we behave towards each other AND towards animals, because words shape the way we think. Even a phrase as (seemingly) innocuous as "pet owner", for example, implies that animals are property, not sentient beings in their own right. So the use of words like "fag" (in reference to people, not cigarettes), does marginalize people. It feels like a kick in the gut when I hear that word, and I'm a heterosexual woman!

Still, I have no doubt that Chrissie Hynde adores Dan Matthews and that her comment was intended as nothing more than the kind of reluctant compliment (referring to the "I'd marry him" part) that a sister might give a brother. The woman is known for many things but tact is not one of them... she says what she feels. Fortunately, she seems to feel quite strongly about fighting cruelty and injustice. And in the end, that serves us all... gay, straight, bi-, 2-legged, 4-legged, feathered and finned.

Very well put Nancy . . Thank you!

i do stand by what is said Nancy, and you make very good points as well. i too am a pet owner and love all people but once again people need to pick and choose their battles and MINE choice is to speak up for the animals!!!

Posted by: Kris Shulfer | March 28, 2007 03:35 PM

I think it's fantastic when anyone chooses to speak up and stand up for animals. I just don't think we have to put people down to do it. (Especially people who are fighting for the same cause.) Why impose limits on kindness? Surely anyone who takes the time to read and post to this blog has a heart big enough to care for all animals, including human ones.

oh god will everyone stop being so serious!

I'm positive Dan won't mind being called a fag by Chrissie, in fact he would probably find it a big fat turn on.

I'm a animal rights activist, and yes, a fag too. There's something to be said about the power of co-opting words and stealing them back, much like Queer theory/activism has done with the word queer. It's empowering and within the right context and I love it when my friends call me a fag.

Posted by: Tim | October 7, 2007 01:36 AM

Thats too bad the word fag was used. Im not gay but n e thing that hurts someone is pretty crappy! Ive used the word with my gay friends & it doesnt bother them but Im sure it bothers some people..just the context of the subject I guess.
