Lab Used By Iams Busted

Back in 02/03, PETA conducted a 9-month investigation into a lab used by the Iams pet food company to "test" its food. During the investigation, we uncovered horrible abuse, including dogs gone crazy from intense confinement; dogs left piled on a filthy paint-chipped floor after having chunks of muscle hacked from their thighs; dogs surgically debarked; horribly sick dogs and cats languishing in their cages, neglected and left to suffer with no vet care.
Well, we’ve continued to work on the case and have just received very good news in a report from the USDA. The report confirms Animal Welfare Act violations that we found during our investigation, including:
- Untrained personnel performing animal experiments
- Failure to provide veterinary care and observe animals on a daily basis
- Caging facilities for dogs and cats so stifling that staff were unable to endure the ammonia levels
- Failure to provide animals with the minimum required space
The lab can now either admit to its wrongdoing and settle with the government or go through an Administrative Court proceeding.

I’ll keep you posted, as details become available, but in the meantime, remember to join these folks in the Iams boycott and only feed your dogs and cats food from cruelty-free companies.

What could the executives at Iams be thinking? What could Proctor & Gamble be thinking?
It is sheer business STUPIDITY and branding suicide to do this experimentation.
It seems like it's only a stubborn and wifull CEO who wants to keep this up
So many people stopped buying Iams because of this- and the brand now has an ugly, negative taint

Score!
The news has been showing Anna Nicole's "For the Love of Dogs, Boycott IAMS" ad. I hope people will be curious/intrigued by her AR work and will want to help support her cause to keep her spirit alive.

Not so long ago I wrote to IAMS(CEO/President) expressing my concerns about it's treatment and conduct towards dogs and cats. In the email I wrote I explained to them that the experiements they perfrom are unnecessary , unethical and quite sadistic.
I also explained to them that there are alternatives and more humane methods available since other competitive dog/cat food brands have no need for animal experiementation.
One experiement I read about, whether this is true or not is a Pregnant Cat that had her stomach and her unborn baby kittens removed during a experiement to find the nutrtional value in new IAMS foods
I told them I was quite alarmed to read about dogs/cats that get infected/diseased through surgical procedures and not only do technicans fail to administer any pain relief but also fail to monitor the animal's condition.
They wrote back (IAMS) saying most of the information that's been read or heard about is "misconcepted and inaccurate" as standards in laboratories have improved and the animals receive social and psychological enrichment by being let out of cages on a daily basis.
I think in someways this is a lie, since I still read about the awful experiements that undercover investigators have discovered at their labs.

I am shocked to hear about IAMS' animal cruelty. It is supposed to be a leader in the animal food business. I feed my cat IAMS because I was told by a vet that it was the best food on the market. I will now switch to Eukanuba unless I hear something detrimental about them also.

I have told EVERY ONE I know about IAMS, and they have all either stopped buying or will never buy their food! A local radio station used to do psa's for them, until I wrote a letter to every employee who works there, I haven't heard an ad since!!!

What does this type of experiement/product proclaim that it is making a better product but killing its own reason for making. What would it be like if we put children, adults and elderly people on a metal sheet and started poking and cutting we would be hit with life in prison even death for such acts. These people need a serious protest in front of there labs, we need to break in and free all these helpless animals and stick them in those cages and torture them and see what there reaction would be.

wow- i had no idea- even as a vet tech of one of the largest small animal hospitals on the east coast! My mom and i have used iams for our pets for over 20 years, and i can say i have bought my last bags of dog and cat food after hearing this news.I'll be sure to spread the news!

well I sent an e-mail to Iams basically telling them that what they were doing was wrong and I would never buy their products ever again and I would also tell everyone I know not to..
well they just sent me an e-mail Feb. 21 telling me those reports were false and how well they take care of their animals and sent me pics of their animals and a video..
in the video you could tell it was all an act.. and they gave me a number to call if I wanted to talk to someone about this.. which I will be calling when they open tomorrow..
I can't believe they got caught doing something like this on Feb 15 but sent me an e-mail after they got caught telling me it was all a lie..
not happy

IAMS should be shut down by the government! This company should not be selling food for cats and dogs while they torture others. I have a BOYCOTT IAMS bumper sticker taped on my back car window so people see what that company really is all about! BOYCOTT AND SHUT THEM DOWN!! NO MONEY, NO MORE IAMS, NO MORE TORTURE!!!

ANIMAL TESTING IS THE NORM FOR PROCTOR & GAMBLE!
Proctor & Gamble owns over 300 brands (including Iams, Pantene Pro V,Iams/Eukanuba, Pringles, Always, Head and Shoulders and Oil of Olay).
I do not buy any of their brands b/c the majority of their products ecspecially their beauty and personnal care products are tested on animals.
It never ceases to amaze me that people will allow animals to suffer in the name of shampoo and makeup. It is not necessary!
Write to Proctor & Gamble and express your disgust about Iams and all the other brands they test on animals.
Thanks :)

Hi I'm from the UK, I still give out leaflets to anyone I see buying Iam's in the supermarket. Every person who I have approached over the years is always shocked at the information. Interestingly Iam's used to sponsor a massive stand at the Supreme cat show which is our equivalent to Cruft's in the Uk but they were getting so much hassle from people that they couldn't face it any more. The show organisers allowed a group called Uncaged which is a small anti vivisection group to have a small stand at the show, they continually showed the video so you can imagine the uproar as many people kept going over to the Iam's stand insisting on their explanations for treating the animals so badly. Iam's tried through financial pressure to stop Uncaged having a stand at the Supreme but the organisers decided that in the interest of fairness they should have a stand. It was a very interesting situation and has worked very well over the years. Uncaged will probably have a stand again there this year in November. The organisers said that the only stipulation was that uncaged couldn't approach the Iam's stand, they didn't need to as the general public did this for them, it was so funny as Iam's completely overreacted and employed lots of security guards who looked like they were in the film men in black, this completly backfired because all these big angry looking men dressed in black suits didn't make the stand look inviting at all, it made them look even more guilty, this was all vey silly as Uncaged are a very peaceful group and were only giving out the information to the public anyway this now is academic because Iam's took their bat home and cancelled their stand a couple of years ago. I thought you would be interested in this story because it proves that a little action can have a huge effect.

I just went on Proctor & Gambels website and read about their animal testing policies. They are stating that now they are teamed up with the Humane Society of the United States and that starting in Oct. 2006 most of the feed testing will be done on animals in their own homes or in organizations such as shelters and training facilities. Does anyone have an idea if this is true? It seems if Proctor and Gamble are partnering with the Humane Society the Humane Society would make sure the animals are treated well. I mean they can't have their name backing this if nothing is being done to make it better. I am confused!!
Posted by: Kristin Otto | February 26, 2007 01:11 PM
Just feed your dog vegan food. I have recently switched and she likes it better. She is healthier and has more energy. Switch!!! All dog food companies unless they are vegan are cruel to animals...
This is ridiculous. The gluttoney of the world is killing my heart.
Posted by: Marlo | February 26, 2007 01:46 PM
I'm shocked that most of you are so nieive. 40 years ago my father raised shepherds and mother raised poodles never would they think of feeding a comercial dog food to them.My father took me to the dog food plant that supplyed all of the major dog food outlets only to put diffenet labels with different ingredients in them but meanwhile it was all the same from the same place. when we got to the plant it was in Chiliwack B.C. with a tractor they were dragging dead cows horses pigs into the plant.these animals someof them were dead for days and more. some had no limbs , heads you name it and it all went into our dog food. nothing has changed or yes it has it has gotten worse. I know for a fact that the plants go and get all the old donuts and crap that the stores don't use back into our food chain. Packaging and all goes into the big mixer. nothing is left out I mean if they dragged a n old cow in from the dairy and if it had a needle still in it the whole bloody thing would be thrown in. and people don't know why their dogs are dieing from cancers. Yes the vets know but are paid big bucks to try to keep your dog or cat or pet alive just like the doctor is keeping us alive while the pharmicutical companies are killing us. how can we start opening up these dog food distrivutors. and their crime.

You have to be very careful with Proctor and Gambles policy statements because they are full of spin. For example if their policy says that they will no longer kill cats and dogs in their experiments it doesn't rule out them killing other kinds animals. Iam's UK were asked a very clear question over the killing of other species of animals and it turned out that at that time they were conducting experiments on chickens which resulted in death. If Iam's were going to be so clear about their experiments why have they taken alot of them inhouse now and why don't they let PETA in to see how the animals are treated. My guess is that they are using the Humane Society as a publicity stunt, are they giving the Humane Society money or free food I don't know but you have to ask these questions. Will the Humane Society have access to check on the animals inside the Iams labs, can the Humane Society be trusted. In the UK we have the RSPCA who have refused to have anything to do with Iam's, ie, selling their product in it's shelters or receiving any form of sponsorship because Iam's were caught out lying. Also the people that Iam's employ have no idea what is going on aswell, when I phoned Iam's UK the receptionist said she would never work for a company that experimented on animals and when I explained what I knew she burst out crying, so the people you talk to at the call centres are usually in the dark aswell. Remember Iams have employed some of the best spin advertising agencies in the world. I have spoken to many pet food manufactures in the UK and it was well known inside the industry that Iam's conducted the worst invasive procedures. I personally wouldn't believe a word they come out with and I would always check with Peta if you are confused over any of their policy statements. Remember you have to always read between the lines.
Posted by: vivienne | February 27, 2007 07:27 AM
I found this out by picking up a brochure (by PETA) about IAM's at a dog park in Portland, Oregon. If there are dog parks around any of you this is a great place to put brochures!
I hope this effort forces change at IAM's.
Thank you.

I found out several months ago about P&G's TOTALLY unnecessary (when is it not?) Never. Especially on cosmetics, dog food or chemicals. Or anything else, IMO. But dog food???????? OMG!
I too, went to their site to lodge a complaint and got their incredible LIES! One statement in particular stated that "we treat these pets exactly as we would treat our own"!!!!!!!!!! And as for testing on other people's pets, well, what kind of person would let someone do that to their beloved pets???? Duh. Anyone with a shred of common sense knows that's a LIE. Especially AR activists!!!!!!
I abhor P&G - the worst offenders of vivisection next to HLS and Covance.

How can one company have so many different brands? It worries me because it's hard to boycott a company when there's limited info regarding what brands belong to that company. Iams could change name tomorrow, the owners could just start another company and avoid the bad press, just look at the above Eukanuba confusion. Yes Eukanuba is an Iams product. Iams could easily create an animal friendly company and repackage their old food. How many other brands are linked directly or indirectly to Iams? It's just hard to keep up, not everyone has the time to investigate 20 or more brands. An interesting subject for discussion would be what company is the most humane, so that we can buy from that. A good company would be one that has an open-door policy so that the state, or even private citizens could visit and see the production process.
Posted by: Rodrigo | February 28, 2007 02:22 PM
Please let people like Peggy Johns who wrote 2/20/07 know that Eukanuba is an Iams product. I wrote to Iams, too, and got their pretty "it's all misinformation" statement which I forwarded to PETA. I'm now using Nutro food for my cat and dogs and putting print outs about Iams on the shelves of my local pet food stores. I've also let HEB's main headquarters know about this. Thank you, PETA.

How IRONIC!!
A number of years ago when my Cat Sam was still alive, I wanted to give him the "Best" food I could possibly find And like most of us that usually meant spending a bit more. So, Off to the pet store I went to buy "the Best Food" I could find or so I thought. The most expensive was more like it. I bought Iams because it was just about the most expensive pet food available (next to Eukanuba). But ironically enough he wouldn't touch it! And no, my Sammy was not a very finicky eater. I just thought I would share that. (I think he must have known animals were tortured in the process or something like that). And in case you're curious, I bought a Mid-Priced brand at the same store & he chowed down!

It is horrendous what IAMS did to these poor animals. It broke my heart watching the clips. I did not know about this, but thank you PETA for educating me and helping me see the cruel things these companies do behind closed doors.I wish someone would treat those people the way they treated those poor animals.

I have not bought any P & G products for YEARS, because of their animal testing. And as far as Iams, or almost any commercial pet food...it is almost ALL made from rejected animal parts, diseased parts, etc. You can buy several GREAT brands at most larger health food stores. Most are not real expensive - just slightly more than Iams - and I feel my pet is well worth it. It comes out to being only a few cents more per serving. A few good brands of healthy pet food are: Azmira, Innova, Wellness, California Natural, & Natura.
A very good info source about pet food and pet health in general is "The Real Safety Guide to Pet Health". You can buy it from truthpublishing.com - I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to keep your pet as healthy as possible.

Fantastic!
I am so glad! You guys at PETA are doing an amazing job in saving the lives of animals. I was shocked to hear about IAMS and Protor & Gamble, what an autrocity for such a nationally recognized company to get caught up with. I now tell all my friends not to buy iams or protor products, at least until they stop doing tests on animals. Why don't they do the tests on themselves? According to them, they act as if there's nothing wrong with the tests, so hey, let the scientists do the tests on the CEO and see how he feels.

A few months ago when I first read about IAMS I shot out an e-mail to the company. I received a lengthy letter back. It was not your typical "form" letter either.
I got a link to the "official" site and I watched videos that showed BEAUTIFUL accomodations for the cats & dogs IAMS keeps.
I swear I wanted to move on in! Sunny, spacious, kitty furniture to rival people furniture, hudge glass windows with perches attached, animals were groomed to the hilt, fat, snoozing, shiny coated cats with content expressions, pretty little food and water bowls, ect.ect.
You all get the jist. I was painted a picture of HEAVEN for the furry cats and dogs.
I know it was not a fraud.
Am I to believe that this video was only shot for people like me that write in enraged about IAMS abusing animals?
They went to a lot of trouble to cover up their tracks believe you me.
The letter also went into details about how the reports were wrong and IAMS went to no lengths verbally/visually to convince me that they LOVE their cats & dogs.
It makes me sick to know that this company will go to no lengths to cover up the ugliness that goes down beyond the pretty video tape!
Get IAMS and run them up the flagpole for the entire world to see their lies and abuse!

Proctor & Gamble is the definitive conglomerate corporation that its core foundation is based on animal exploitation and abuse. Iams, Eukanuba, Oil of Olay, Secret, Pantene, Aussie, Crest, Clairol, Cheer, Dawn, Era, Fabreeze, Gilette, Braun, Cover Girl, Max Factor, Tampax, Always, Ivory, Gain, Tide, Era, Bounce, these are just some of the morally corrupt and degenerate companies under the P&G umbrella. Each of these companies and more that I have not listed are directly responsible for the torture and death of millions of animals over the years. These companies hide their dirty secrets behind their wholesome marketing campaigns and their huge advertising budgets. They control your television and radio airtime more than you know. They have most of this country brainwashed into believing their family oriented, “ we care for you” mantra’s of deceit. The only thing P&G cares about is its profits, while thinking nothing of all the years its racked up in abusing, testing, torturing, and killing animals. Remember folks, every dollar you spend is a vote for the future. When you are not aware of all the companies that P&G controls, you can inadvertently support Iams Cruelty which is just part and parcel of the greater P&G Cruelty. Please give your dollars to companies that support non-violence, cruelty-free companies that create products that are also gentle on our Mother, Earth. After all, if these horrific companies have to test all their products on animals, they are usually products that shouldn’t be used on humans. Please go to P&G.com and find out how many companies belong to Proctor & Gamble and BOYCOTT THEM ALL!!

Wow! I had no idea a company that prides itself on making pet food which claims to prolong the life of your pet was actually abusing and killing other poor innocent animals in the process!
I am deeply saddened and outraged! I have a dog and a cat
and I could never imagine them victims of such a cruel fate!
Iams, you are not only hippocrites but monsters, shame on you! I will never buy your products again and I will spread the word to everyone I know to do the same! To think
I just got through protesting
for dogs and cats abused in other countries as well as medical labs in this country. I never thought our precious pets would be threatened by of all people a pet food company! When will the cruelty for all living things be replaced with empathy and compassion? Thank You PETA for your ongoing commitment to protecting animals everywhere!

Hi,
I found a great dog and cat food product that does not test on animals. It is called Natural Balance. It is made by Dick van Patten (if anyone can remember Eight is Enough). It is all natural, no by products, no corn fillers, for all breed and life stages, and does NOT TEST ON ANIMALS. This company donates food to animals shelters on a consistent basis. I am against Iams testing policies that I found a side job giving out free samples and coupons of Natural Balance pet food. The pet store I work in no longer carries Iams. Maybe this will help anyone on a mission. This food even caters to animals with certain food allergies. Check the Natural Balance website for further info. Thank you for your time.

Could someone please send me a list if you have one of all the major brands the parent company sells. This company should feel the financial impact of their own cruelty. We all need to make sure we are not supporting the parent company with any of their products. I think it is also a good idea to write our local and federal officials so companies like this can be held responsilbe for the cruel treatment they provide to animals. The USDA also needs to hear that we, as pet owners and lovers of animals appriciate their actions. If they get feedback and know we do appriciate their actions, they will take cases such as this more serious in the future.

I wrote to Iams a month or so ago after reading about this in your newsletter. Received a reply of complete denial from Iams, stating that PETA was using footage that was 7 to 10 years old and from another animal lab. This is the kind of stuff that keeps the average citizen confused. I'll be happy to share the email reply I received with anyone that would like to see it. I have simply decided to stay away from Iams, regardless.

This is for Rodrigo, Feb.28, 2:22PM. I worked at a pet store for 5 years. The owner was a brillient man and animal lover. He taught me how to read the animal food bag ingredients to tell which one was good and which one was bad. The way to tell a good dog food is by which ingredients are listed reading the ingredients. If you look on your bag on Nutro, you will find corn meal as one of the first ingredients. As you know, ingredients are listed by the most promenent ingredient to the least. Corn meal gives animals gas and is extremely hard for them to digest. Plain and simple, it is FILLER. There are many Holistic animal foods available that are not animal tested. Nutro would probably run close to last as my choice for my dog. Please, check the ingredients before you buy and if corn meal is either listed as 1, 2 or 3, keep looking. Go to the internet and look up, Holistic dog foods. You will get a list to choose from. Good luck. And make sure it is not animal tested.

Sorry to let Peggy Johns know that Iams Company in Dayton Ohio is also the producer of Eukanuba Food.
I have been feeding my German Shepherd Eukanuba for 9 years, but will definitely switch and my daughter has already switched to another brand and her 3 dogs are doing just great !! Who needs Iams? Not us, not now, since finding out about the cruelties inflicted on poor innocent souls that only look for affection and will shower us with love unconditionally. Shame on you at Iams - you have no hearts at all!!

There is nothing that I hate more in this world than cruelty to animals of any sort including experiment labs & kill-shelters.All of you posted some great posts.Thank You & Bless your heart.I wouldnt be surprized if they teamed up with The Humane Society of The United States.I dont believe they can be trusted either but thats another story.I would like to tell everyone a home made diet for your dogs.I've raised over 60 dogs in the past & own 15 now.The diet is as follows:
Rice (easier to digest than corn)mixed with some veggies(no salt peas are favored)& boiled only beef,,liver or boneless chicken (if desired for flavor.)Cool completely.Depending on size-1-4 small bowls daily throughout the day.We make a potful & store in little bowls in the fridge,,microwave or warm on stove & then cool to room temperature as needed.I had a dog that ate this his entire life recommended by a *good* vet for a dog I once had because the dog did not have a working pancreus. He lived a good long healthy life with energy to the end.My two brothers & I have decided to go back to this diet for all of our dogs & be done with all the dogfoods that may be more harmful than good with all the dyes & additives & all the abuse that goes into them.
Thank You Peta & all its supporters. We ARE making a difference.Let us all do whatever we can for all the animals who suffer.Animals have feelings & love in their hearts.
Sincerely,

Way to go PETA!!!!!
Finally everyone will now the sick truth about IAMS i hate thier food and never buy it. My big reason is that a couple of years ago i tried IAMS on my dog to see if he would like it. He was at the vets office the very next morning with foam coming out of his mouth. NEVER AGAIN!!!! I really hope that this company either stops animal testing or shuts down for good
Once again way to go!!

In this day and age, How can you justify the cruel & inhumane way you treat an animal that just wants to be loved. Shame on you. All I can say is i hope, one day, a child of yours or some other family member gets sick and is treated the way you feel is OK to treat the animals.SHAME AGAIN.I am in Animal rescue in Australia. I will never purchase your products & will urge others to do the same.

I am constantly informing people the truth about iams and the all the rest of the proctor and gamble products. You guys are truly making a difference for these animals.

I got the same response as all the others when I wrote to the Iams President: I actually got a packet of literature back about PETA "misinforming" and "exaggerating" the complaints against IAMS. Well, with the USDA Animal Welfare Violations now public, I was able to re-write to the IAMS president and tell him his company was caught in a lie. I told him I still will not buy Iams or any Iams-related products and that I sincerely hope the USDA nails them when it comes time to face these charges. And I did use that exact wording. I am a Christian and I tithe to PETA. I believe in their work so much that I am very active with donations and letter writing. I will continue to pray for the staff at PETA. Proverbs 12:10 says, "A good man cares for the welfare of his animals." Thanks PETA for caring. - Baltimore, Maryland

When it comes to the ultimate BAD SCIENCE IAMS and PC come to mind first ! Each time I go out to shop I take my BOYCOTT IAMS stickers with me and I stick them on each and every one of their products on the shelf - so hopefully more people will become aware of the torture that goes on behind closed doors - to keep our pet's healthy ! Pretty bad research policy isn't it !?

The only way to stop Iams is to get them where it hurts - in the pocketbook. If everyone stopped buying their products, they would have no recourse but to stop animal testing. The people who engage in this barberic practice of testing on animals are COWARDS. Anyone who harms one hair on an animal will answer one day to the Almighty. What goes around comes around.

A digression:
I was horrified to find out from the locals in small towns in the mountains of Romania that bears are fed routinely dog food in order to keep their numbers high for hunters (foreigners and the rich Romanian business elite like to use modern guns on animals- guns and hunting were banned for 50 years in Rom but now they are back in style). I was told that many of the bears have diabetes now as a result of the bad food they are given, since locals find them dead in the forests from infections, with rotten teeth, etc (unless they are hunted).

Someone asked for a dog food that does not test on animals.
The one I use is Dick Van Pattens - Natural Balance.
I added the link that explains they NEVER test on animals.

I am outraged at this info I am just recieving, as I sit and look at a bag of Iams for my boxer and believe you me I will be changing her diet to another form of dog food, I also have an american bulldog who I feed science diet large breed I think Ill switch her to that.. Thank you for the heads up and keep on investigating!!!

there is much information on pet food. A good resource is the Animal Protection Institute website they have information on what is "really" in dog food.
Also the book titled "Food Pets die For: shocking facts about pet food" by Martin & Messonnier.
Euthanized animals of all kinds (dogs, cats from shelters & zoo animals) are ground up and added to pet foods. Also domestic animals that are not fit for human consumption are used. This means diseased, "downed" and dead are all used. All animal parts are used including, feathers, hooves, beaks etc.
I believe that the company that makes Hill's Science diet either donates or gives a significant discount to vets. This is not a "quality" dog food either. But people think it is because it is carried in a vet's office.
Some other quality dog foods include Innova, Paul Newman's, Wysong, & Natural Balance.
Marlo's statement is accurate.

I have told folks for years about P and G and their evil ways. Call them they will deny any of this. Then they will send a little letter saying how great they are. We don't have P and G products in our home. Our vet said that iams get the dog hooked on this meat flavor in their dog food and to get the dog to switch is a nightmare. The high quantity of meat in the food shuts down a dog's liver faster. The vet knows he worked for NASA. God Bless Anna my heart goes out to her and her family.

I am more than happy to report that a large pet food store in Vancouver, B.C., Canada has rid its stocks of all IAMS products. The Auschwitz of animal food companies will no longer have its products sold in our store. IAMS and Proctor and Gamble are a blight on civilized society. We will no longer believe your lies. I have never purchased Iams nor would I. I buy cruelty-free vegan products for myself.
My petfood has animal ingredients & has been tested on animals. BUT, it has been tested humanely, by veterinary professionals & for the purpose of advancement in veterinary nutrition. I will NOT buy pet food which has NOT been "tested on animals" since in essence I would then be subjecting my pets to animal testing. It can be done properly. For example, my cats participated in food trials which involved feeding them a good food & running routine tests (bloodwork, urinalysis, x-rays) which, as senior cats, should be part of their routine medical care. The results were submitted to the food company. My cats never saw a cage & certainly did not suffer. We can do this properly so as to benefit all animals, the "test" subjects & our "pets". Iams research is unethical & unacceptable.
I am a veterinary technician & I am appalled at such experiments. I am also disturbed, however, by the illnesses I see resulting from pet foods which have no or little research to back them. These are often the so-called "natural" foods. Iams isn't a company that cares about pets- I am not surprised by their lack of moral concern. Unfortunatately almost all pet food companies are owned by a handful of huge corporations- even if the food isn't tested inappropriately, chances are another product associated with the company is. Yes, this applies to many of the "natural", "organic" foods etc. It is not a requirement to actually scientifically ensure adequate nutrition- these products are 99% marketing. The short answer is: please feed a diet which is healthy for your pet, has research (including long-term effects) to support the food, and do not purchase foods such as IAMS.
I am a little bothered by the emotional & extreme nature of some of these posts. I have to wonder which side these people are really on-- threats & "hate" are not successful methods of instigating change. You cannot end violence with violence. Please educate yourself, then educate others, and put both your money & your mouth where they count. "Liberating" lab animals is potentially a very cruel action & serves to alienate the average person from animal welfare concerns. Showing IAMS videos is much more effective- give the people the information they need to make informed choices rather than giving them a confusing circus act.

I've heard the horror stories before about IAM's desire to test animals that suffer in a cruel and unfit environment. I have been spreading the word to people who own animals and even those who don't. Getting the word out will give them an even REDDER bottom line.
Stop the cruelty or lose or status as a company.

Thank you SO MUCH for informing me of IAMS inhumane practices. I had no idea and am totally outraged!!! I have been purchasing IAMS food for my dog for a long time now, and had no idea of what the company did to test their products. I will NOT buy this food as long as they practice cruelty to animals. This horrible cruelty must be stopped at all costs. I could not imagine my dog going thru such acts just to see if the food is edible. BOYCOTT IAMS!!!

Posted by: Teresa Hall | March 3, 2007 06:28 PM
I do not know why this is such a surprise to anyone, especially PETA and its supporters. Proctor and Gamble has been continuously testing on animals since I can remember. We have not used ANY of their products in this house (including Folgers, Tropicana juice and certain make-up companies etc.) for years due to this fact.
You really have to do your homework. Companies that test on animals will buy seemingly benign companies and you will unknowingly be giving these companies your money.
Please read up and pay attention. PETA has lists that can help you get started.

I also wrote to IAMS and my friend called them at 800-525-4267. I received an email back from"Tina" who said the company is passionate about cats and dogs with a deep commitment to their health and welfare and that for the past few years misleading and innaccurate information has been circulating and she/they appreciate the opportunity to provide me with the facts. There are numerous sites and articles she/they reffered me to. I don't believe proctor and gamble, but unfortunately, my friend chose to believe them.We have been debating ever since. My friend doesn't want to believe that people would actually do these things to animals and asks me not to tell her these things or she won't be able to sleep at night.I told her doing nothing makes her part of the problem. I have spent many a sleepless night thinking about how animals are mistreated. Anyhow, my cats eat PetGuard that is on Peta's list of pet food companies that do not test on animals and they like it just fine. I buy it at my health food grocery store.

I hope that PETA can fund anti-Iams print or radio ads. When I tell people the truth about Iams they are disgusted! Iams plays up their image to be such a cutesy pet-friendly company--they play an effective ruse on the American public. Peta--we need to get the word out in a very public fashion so non-Peta members can be exposed to the truth behind Iams!!

I complained to Iams about their practices and received the "spin" email that people have mentioned. I replied with the following -- maybe it can serve as a model for others' letters?
*****
Hi Tina,
I understand that it's your job to defend Iams. Still, I cannot say that the long email you sent me put my mind at rest. The same week that you wrote me your message, PETA sent another one suggesting that, despite its admirably written "spin," Iams continues to treat animals less than humanely.
Here's the bottom line: I am a busy person. I do not have time to thoroughly research both sides of this "he said-she said" issue. And I remain unsure whether Iams is the cruelty-free company that it professes to be.
With so many pet food companies from which to choose, I am making the decision to switch my loyalty to another company -- one that is unambiguously humane. And I am telling my friends about my decision and asking my local pet supply store, Mounds Pet Food Warehouse, to discontinue selling your products.
Best,
Melissa

I can not believe this type of cruelty is being inflicted on any animal, least of all companion animals. It is sick, sick, sick! How do these people sleep at night? I haven't purchased Iams since this story broke and will continue to let everyone I know how this company deals in cruelty.
Posted by: Sally Fernbach | March 4, 2007 02:06 PM
It personally alarms me, as I know it does for everyone who had heard about this case, that not only this company is conducting animal testing methods, but that they are in fact a business that makes a product to help house hold animals have a "nutritional" diet.
How confusing that a pet company tortures the pets...

I Hope everyone at Iams that has tested on animals, gets the punishment they truly deserve. Its time we stop using animals as experiments to have make up and the accessories we dont need.Dont you guys have feelings whatsoever hurting an animal? If you guys have no reactions towards destroying a animals life, I bet you guys wouldnt have a problem either with getting away with murder...I hope you guys get shut downed.

IAMS is horrible.. FYI- I saw a comment up there from Jane that she was switching to Eukanuba. I thought I'd let everyone know Eukanuba is the premium brand of Iams. They are owned by Iams. SCIENCE DIET is another animal tester.. they also preserve their food with the same stuff in weed killer [known to cause BRAIN TUMORS in humans.. but OK for our animals? Why then do we test all of our HUMAN stuff on animals!!] I'm not vegan, so I feed my dog Nutro, who previously used labs that got caught testing, but have since switched to non invasive experiments that are based on taste, skin/coat, etc according to correspondence. They preserve their food with vitamin E and egg. No chemicals or animal by-products in their dry food, but they do use meat. Just a little FYI. xoxo!

Let's continue this support.
When buying pet food ask the manager if they sell Iams.
If not let them know that YOU WILL shop there because they do not sell Iams, and why.
If they do- tell them about the horrible testing and that their advertising is very misleading, ask them to stop selling Iams and tell them you will not shop there until they do.
Animals are not here for tests- they are here for love and compassion that go both ways.

I am a vet tech and my vet often recommends IAMS along with two other brands to his clients I'm going to have to make sure he is aware of this situation.

Dear,
I was disgusted when looking at the video sent to me by the PETA (animal Rights organisation). Shocking, unhuman, unbelievably cruel. What kind of human would do this to an animal. The fear that I saw in the eyes of these animals is burnt in my mind. I can assure you of one thing
I will use my influence as a teacher to make my students & colleagues aware of this cruelty. Bear in mind that the consumer has a lot of power.
I hope your hearts will open up and that you will become empathetic towards these animals.
Annie.

I have been reading the posts and I saw someone saying they will switch to Science Diet...just so you know they do alot of animal testing as well....FYI!

When this story first broke out I immediately ceased the use of Iams and got everyone I know to stop buying it also!! We have come so far and I hate that companies are still using cruelty to test their products.

Regarding P&G products, including Iams, yes it is a HUGE company with many, many subsidiairies.
As someone previously said in this post that you have to get them in the pocketbook, that is absolutely the only way they are going to make changes, because otherwise they will simply continue to spin everything to make themselves look good, instead of actually making changes to the way they do their business.
So, check out PETA's website for all P&G's companies, and always read the labels of the products you buy (I was always thinking of household cleaning products or cosmetics, and did not even realize that companies like Tropicana were also under P&G).
The next step, which I think would be great if everyone did it, is to keep the receipts of your non-P&G purchases, and send them to Procter & Gamble on a regular basis. They will really start to see where they are losing business.

THAT IS CRAZY.They r said 2 be the best food 4 animals.

What Iams is doing is absolutely despicable. Never again will anyone in my family nor any of our many friends ever purchase another product from Iams or their parent company, Mars Inc. Goodbye forever Iams and Mars. You just lost a family who spends approximately $9,500/year on pet food and related products. Enjoy the glider ride into history.

I really like the idea that Karissa Blades posted on March 7th, that we should all keep our receipts for non P&G rpoducts and mail them to P&G to see how much money they are loosing out on as long as they continue these horrifying experiments. I will borrow her idea & see how many backers I can get to do this with me & see how much of an impact this will make. I'll try anything once!

Thank you PETA for the information on iams and P&G. I had no idea and I have 4 cats that have been eating Iams. My dog eats pedigree. I'll look on your list and see if that one is okay. I will never buy a P&G product again. I'll be sure to let every one I know, know about this!
Keep up the good work PETA!

Hi, I live in South Africa, we do not have the food that is on the approved list of pet-food companies that have contacted PETA to say that they don't test on animals, my dogs all eat Hills and have done so from puppies, I am very happy with Hills but now I am concerned, do you guys call Hills the Science Diet? I see someone has said that the Science Diet also tests on animals. It is very frustrating living in SA there are no lists of approved products for us, every Vet I have been to has always recommended Hills and I have always felt that I am giving my dogs and cats the best that I can, I don't know what else I would feed them!! We are not spoilt for choice in SA. Just recently we have had 35 dogs die from Woolworths (a more upmarket food store) dog food, when I heard the news I thought how greatful I am that my dogs eat Hills, now I am not so sure. Can anyone advise me?

Well Done PETA!!
I have just been reading the comments regarding IAMS. This is a product I have never bought for my animals.
I recently went to see my bank regarding an RRSP contribution. My money is in mutual funds in Canadian stocks. The investment counsellor suggested that I switch some of the money to US stocks, since I would probably get a better return on my money. My first thought was that P&G would be one of the companies that my money would be invested in. I immediately said, No, I will stay with Canadian stocks. Now, I am not sure which companies I have invested in, but I do know that since P&G is such a huge, profitable company, the bank's investment dealers would think this a good "buy". The investment agent did not know anything about P&G and, unfortunately, there was not time at that sitting to inform her of all the reasons to stop buying P&G products.
We have to be increasingly aware of the products we buy and become label readers. It is quite amazing the list of products and companies that are under the P&G umbrella.
Stay vigilant and in our own small ways each of us can help the animals and keep our world safe and clean.
Also, I have been using a brand of canned dog food which I buy from Canada Safeway. The brand is "Priority," made by I don't know who, but distributed by Safeway. On the can it says, "Priority is a proud sponsor of Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation." One of the reasons I have been buying this product is because this is an admirable cause. However, on the list of ingredients it says, "meat by-products." My daughter said that this might include dog and cat parts, as well as other animal parts.
I e-mailed the company asking what they meant by meat by-products but got no reply.
Since reading the comments on your page, I have since researched a purveyor of Natural Balance dog food and, although the store is a bit out of the way, I will make the journey to purchase some healthy food for my 13-year-old dogs -- food that I know has been created in an ethical and humane manner.
Thank you, PETA, for all that you do to help the animals.

Just a little while ago I wrote an E-mail to Iams expressing my view on Iams cruelty. (Rather strongly I may add.) The response that came back denied any part in the animal cruelty tests they do, and claimed that it was a RUMOR. They told me that all the animal testing they do is under circumstances that would be acceptable for humans. They also said that there are companions in the dog's cages, since they are pack animals, and that they are able to go through a doggy door and run out and play when ever they wish.
When will they finally come clean?

My dog Clifford has been on Iams dogfood for 10 years and my stomach turned when I found out that what I thought was good for him and my other pets ,was causing other animals to suffer.I have 2 dogs and 4 cats and we no longer buy Iams due to seeing the Anna Nicole ad and her support in boycotting Iams. May she RIP knowing her stand against crulety is being carried on by many.

I researched dog foods a long time ago and I knew I did not want my beloved animal fed that garbage. I took a lot of flack from people regarding my dog's home cooked diet. But I am so glad my precious friend is safe. iams and all the other are greedy uncaring and they should be prosecuted for the murdering of pets.

I posted in febuary while i was still in grade 6. Now i am in grade 7 and more observitory of abuse. All of my animals are rescues of abuse or neglect. i think everyone should know how bad things are right now and are going to get. THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!!!! people in some delusion of their mind think they can abuse animals! These poor defenceless creatures are tortured for no reason. If this does not stop imediatly, our world will become common with abuse, testing and cruelty! In my mind, i cant even think of hurting an animal. if you would like to hear more about me and how i feel, plus submit how you feel, please go to my website at: izzabizzykitty.piczo.com
Let's speak for those who canot speak for themselves!
