Pretty much anyone with an ounce of compassion knows that wearing fur is somewhere between contemptible and downright wicked on a scale of 1 to evil—and most people have an inkling that the process of making leather isn't exactly a walk in the park for the cows involved (the live dismembering part in particular can be unpleasant). But until now, the wool industry has done a bang-up job of keeping its gruesome practices from the public eye. Which is why we're incredibly grateful to Pink for coming out and letting her millions of fans know what's really going on.
Today, Pink launched her video exposé of the Australian wool industry before her concert in Paris and called for an international boycott of Australian wool until the shocking abuses documented in the video are ended. You can click here for ways to help sheep, and watch Pink's disturbing but important video below.

Anyone who has seen a sheep being mulesd knows that it is cruel and unnecessary. I am Australian, and I can tell you - sheep farmers do NOT take care of their animals. Hooray Pink!

I think its great that international voices like Pink want to stand up for the rights of animals.

Pink, I'm not really into any music lately, just to old and busy to bother but I just wanted to say that I'm starting to become one of your best fans. You are amazing for putting yourself out there like you are and with the amount of influence you have over the youth of today, even if other stars don't follow your lead hopefully some of the youngster will.
Thanks for giving the animals a voice.

As an Australian I can tell you that Americans will give up their guns before Aussie farmers will give up their Merinos. That said, there must be a kinder way of helping the Merino avoid fly strike.
P.S. I'm a big PINK fan, a fantastic artist.

Pink's done a GREAT job exposing the cruel and barbaric practices behind the wool industry.
The video footage is more proof that things need to change.
Keep up the GREAT work!!!

Goodjob girl! I hope people will finally see what those animals go thru on a dialy base :(
Don't let anyone take you down and keep ur head up.. I know many people fully support you, like me. Keep up the good work!

I can't believe that Australia still hasn't banned this barbaric torture. Bravo to Pink for raising awareness on an issue most people will never hear about otherwise.
Posted by: Lav | December 20, 2006 09:16 AM
well, if anyone actually had a clue they would realize that it is time to get your head out of the sand and wake up. ripping flesh off without sterile procedures and NO anesthetic is barbaric. HELLO. it is time to take control and tell the fashion houses to grow a conscience!!

I live in Australia and every day I see these trucks driving these poor sheep to the ports/markets. It makes me sick seeing them sat at petrol stations while the driver is having his lunch (not that I'm saying he shouldn't stop for lunch), while they sit in 40 degree heat, piled on top of each other, many with their heads and limps sticking out the truck as they are squashed in so tight. Some have been on the truck for up to 3 days like this. I myself have sheep that have been born on these trucks and have simply been left on the side of the highway as it is illegal to transport pregnant ewes. Everyone of my sheep have different personalities, they also have feelings and know fear and pain. Nothing should be subjected to parts of their bodies being ripped off, how would you like it. You are right that fly strike is an awful thing to get but as Jack says this is due to the way these poor animals have been bred just so you can get more wool. It's greed that motivates this. Merino's shouldn't be in Australia, the climate is too hot and there are too many flies, sorry to the farmers that chose this as a way to make a living but nothing can justify cruelty. The other things is that a lot of these sheep don't even get fly strike on the arses, it can happen anywhere the animal has thick moist wool, as seen in the video, those maggots where on that area so what is the solution, just skin them all.

I just want to mention that the first time I ever witnessed a live sheep slaughter was at a religious Islamic event, eidil adha, where they honor a prophetic tradition mentioned in the Holy Qur'an. I was in my early teens and my mother paid a sheep to be slaughtered under our family name. Needless to say I never ate the meat because I was just horrified by the whole slaughtering process and experience. One minute I was thinking "Aww.. what cute sheep!" and the next minute I saw it convulsing on the floor bleeding from a huge gash in it's neck. Slaughter by means of a huge gash across an animal's main blood vessel is considered the most humane by Muslims since we cannot have them stunned, unconcious or dead before slaughter. That meat would be considered carcass and that would be haram for consumption.

BAN ANY ABUSIVE ANIMAL ACTIVITY. IT IS NO DIFFERENT TO SLAVE LABOUR, SEX SLAVES AND ANY ABUSE WHICH BENEFITS ONE PARTY AND NEGLECTS OR DESTROYS THE OTHER. FARMING IS ON THE DECLINE BECAUSE OF THE CHANGE OF ENVIRONMENT... PACK UP... REINVENT YOURSELFS..BUT STOP MAKING EXCUSES... AGAIN IT IS GREEDY PROFIT MAKING SCHEMES THAT HAVE CREATED THIS SITUATION : EXTRA FOLDS ON THE ANIMAL TO PRODUCE MORE WOOL... GREED, GREEDY AND GREEDIER... TELL THE FARMERS TO GET ANOTHER OCCUPATION..IT IS A DYING INDUSTRY.. WHY MAKE THEM SUFFER.

I am a young Australian and am outraged over the cruelty that is going on. Pink, Australia loves you! I really hope people look into the facts themselves.
Posted by: Amy D | December 21, 2006 01:54 AM
They already have sheep down here without wool or folds around there bums. There's no need for mulesing!
Posted by: Chris | December 21, 2006 08:30 AM
people spend millions for nonsense and rubbish. human brains and hearts and above all australian and other farmers should finally update their mind to understand that there a r e possibilities to avoid animal suffering, for example by anestesy but they just want a maximum of profit from the suffering creatures, so they are ruthless enough to export these poor defenseless animals also to the near east, where they are slaughtered in the most horrible way without any humain feelings left for them! shame on you, greedy habitants of this planet! mother earth shall give you her answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and right on pink; she understands a lot - above all about what's a feeling heart!
Posted by: john grant | December 22, 2006 09:27 AM
These people who do such inhumane thing to animals do not deserve to live themselves. It is wrong to make these sheep suffer complete animal cruelty. It is fabolous to see celebrities such as Pink standing up for what they believe in.
This is wrong and everyone knows it.

People keep talking about presenting a balanced view.
The fact that you are able to post your own opinion on a website means that your voice can be heard, too...and healthy debate on a topical issue can occur.
Why should Pink be denied the opportunity to voice her opinion(?) - hell, we get force fed drivel from our so-called leaders everyday, and have to tolerate biased, base-grade journalism (as well).
The images speak for themselves and if some farmers are not continuing the practice, then there must be viable alternatives around. Why can't we use our 'noggins', after all these centuries, to come up with something better?
I, for one, am grateful that we have people in the public arena who get us thinking about and discussing something more than what clothes they are wearing and who they are dating.
Goood on you, Pink! You have supporters in Oz, who admire you for your enormous artistic talent, emotional intelligence and political awareness.
Posted by: Melanie | December 23, 2006 12:49 AM
Why do australians tolerate the abuse of their industry? Go out and protest. These people should be prosecuted for the lies and damage they have caused.
Merry christmas.

Thank you, Pink! Let's all call on the cosmetics companies and others who use lanolin. Tell them to see the video. There are alternatives to lanolin too.

i cried when i saw them cut sheep's legs and when they opened sheep's skin. Im too shocked, in China, it's worst but that even stills cruel.

Pink. She's always been awesome. She's always stood up for what she believed in and made music about it. She's always been my hero because she's always stuck up for what she believes, and this should be no different. I love Pink for what she is and what she stands up for. Thank you Pink for sticking up for these animals. Because if no one listens to us, they'll listen to you. You're our voice.

This message goes out in particular to those people who can watch this and not be bothered. everyone in the world poor or wealthy should be well aware of the methods ranchers and farmers use to bring your dinner to the slaughterhouse.
"if you watch your food being slaughtered, you shouldnt be able to eat it"
Posted by: Allie | December 27, 2006 03:11 PM
Haveing people like Pink stand up for those who can't really gives me, as well as my friends, the insperatiion that we need to keep speaking out for animal rights.

I really think that this video that Pink has made is something really kind of her to do. Showing us how much sheep have to endure so we can use their wool isn't humane. Animals do feel things, and cutting conscious animals is like killing a human who is still pretty much alive. It's not fair that animals have to suffer these kinds of things just for our use. Thank you so much Pink for raising a voice for the sheep! It's time for us to get out there and help the poor sheep.
Posted by: Jennifer | December 27, 2006 03:15 PM

Thank you so much Pink, most celebrities don't care about what happens to the animals, as long as they look "hott" in the fabrics of death. With your video "Stupid Girls" and you doing the video for this, i have gained a huge amount of respect for you, which to be honest i hardly respect any celebrities. Thanks again!

Pink is amazing! you can tell she is one of the few celebritites that has a huge heart! and courage to tell the world about this disgusting practice.
Those Aussie farmers disgust me, torturing those harmless sheep lke that, how can they call themselves men when they beat up and cut little animals all day . they are nothing but SICK DEPRAVED cowards! same the american versions who abuse cattle in rodeos etc...
Posted by: Rey | December 27, 2006 03:24 PM
it's wrong and unneccesary, no animal should undergo that treatment, especially not for fashion, there are fakes nowadays that are so much kinder, and often cheaper, if you buy this, your paying for slaughtrer, and for people to continue treating animals like that, surely if you have one ounce of a conscience, you won't buy it in future. put them out of business, then they cannot keep treating the sheep like this.
Posted by: Beverlyyy | December 27, 2006 03:24 PM
Oh haha and also, My friends at school always ask me after i yell at them for their leather coats if it's okay to wear wool, my response? "yah i guess that's fine, i mean they don't need to kill the animals to shave off their wool" which is why i'm so happy this video was made because i would have never learned this anywhere else, thanks again!

I think it's so great that people, like Pink, that have a large impact on people are willing to stand up or things they believe in. Even if they know it'll be looked down upon by some people, they still do it. Because they're more worried about what's right than what fickle fan decides to stop buying albums because they don't think she has to the right to tell a truth like that. Thanks so much for getting this out there. -Lenora

While many singers, actors, and models are constantly in the news about their love lives, their drug problems, and their latest purse trend.. it is wonderful to see celebrities like Pink, Trent Reznor, and Alec Baldwin getting recognition for doing something great!

I think what Pink is doing is amazing usally stars like pink only care about which fur coat they r gonna wear each day or what kinda of animal they are gonna have for dinner
Posted by: Cori | December 27, 2006 04:16 PM
No one likes being just used. I'm happy when ever a product or celebrity lends their voice to letting people know that were using and abusing animals...I saw method fabric softeners sheets the other day and they are cool cuz they let people know that most fabric softeners are made from tallow or animal fat!!

I think that Pink Did a great job showing the cruelty and im glad to say she has gained alot of my respect she recently didnt have. I hope more celeberties step up and follows Pink's example by using there fame and fortune to help other people who cant speak up and gain attion and more importantly animals who even if they wanted to...can't speak for themselves.
Thanks again for helping and giving the sheep a voice,

Maybe now some people will see how cruel farmers are to sheep.
I am Australian and I have seen how farmers treat sheep and it makes me sick!
Seeing as ur video has been noticed world wide maybe people will stand up for the poor sheep! Well hopefully.

It hurts me to say that without you, many people would not care about this. Thank you, Pink, for taking the time to stand up for the animals. For some reason in society today, many people only care about what the "fad" is with celebrities. That's why it is very important for more people to be like you..

Pink, We need more artists out there like yourself. You are an inspiration to our youth and are teaching many that it is time for a change. Your video is heartfelt and intense. I really think with you as a front woman there will be positive changes in the wool industry. We,(especially peeps in the industry) need to stop wearing trendy clothing that supports animal torture or even fur at all. Thanks for being you and we can't wait to see you with Justin down here in Fort Lauderdale.

Pink, I knew the second I got an email notice from PETA that this would be a smashing success. Thanks so much for your awareness and your education-spreading!!! Many people ARE blind to the ways sheep are treated (once upon a time myself, too!) and education of the horrors of the wool industry is so important! Not only are you a complete hottie, but you have a heart of gold!
As a side note - I recently started rocking out a nose hoop rather then the stud I've worn for the last 3 years, and all the time I get, "You look like Pink in her newest video! She's so hot!" Anyways, thanks again for your work!

Heyy.
You're awesome. Sometimes I wish I was famous just so that I could have the opportunity to speak to many different people and make strong points like you do. Keep doing what your doing. Everyone knows that whats going on in our world today with animals is wrong. They aren't ment to be killed, they aren't needed for fur, or food, etc. It's completely sick. I havent watched the video, I can't. That stuff is too hard for me to see, I know what goes on and thats enough information for me to compeltely be against it.
Posted by: Amanda | December 27, 2006 05:40 PM
gday pink! im from australia and have been campaigning with animal lib for decades to stop this excrutiatingly painful practice. wot u have done has made me feel vindicated that all our hard work is worth it cos u now are the bravest celeb eva helping all the poor animals. i luv u with all my heart xx

That video was horribly disgusting and sad. They weren't even wearing gloves.. how sadistic is that? Those poor sheep, and all the other animals being tortured for various reasons. Thank you Pink for speaking out for those who cannot. <33

While in no way do I think mulesing is a humane practice, I find it interesting to note that you do not provide any information regarding alternative remedies for removing fly-strike in sheep on your website. Yes mulesing is painful, but so is dying as a result of fly-strike. I have spoken to a farmer who doesn't agree with the procedure but says it is the only practical method currently available to them. Is Pink going to pay for training or research into alternate methods? I would find it highly unlikely. Don't assume that just because a method is used that the people who use it agree with it. Maybe if Pink was willing to spend some time on a merino farm and speak with the farmers and see their side of the debate I would have some respect for her. It's not good enough to 'educate' people about a problem and speak out against it if you aren't going to offer a solution.
Posted by: rainy | December 28, 2006 12:53 AM
I didnt even have to watch the whole thing and something should be done because even if I eat meat or whatever I feel terrible..This is like illegal and it just hurts to watch. Its rude and cruel. If anything I would help stop this. But I dont know how but I would figure out. And I dont see how someone could have it in there heart to slotter so many animals and do such harm. I say go pink not only do I love your music I just completly admire you for your effort. You are my idol!!!!
Posted by: Katrina | December 28, 2006 03:00 AM
I have never cried for an animal creulty video and I was scared to watch it because I have an adorable coat that I think has some percentage of wool in it and now I have to throw it away. I love life.
Posted by: Lindsay | December 28, 2006 04:55 AM
Thank you Pink for sticking up for the helpless animals. Animals like the sheep in your video are helpless and it makes me sick that any human being can be capable of such cruelty and be able to watch any animal suffer like that. People like that do not even have the right to exist on this earth.

Posted by: tina | December 29, 2006 02:52 AM
Have you seen what happens to sheep if they don't have their flanks cut off and then go about their daily business in the harsh australian heat surrounded by hundreds of flies? Trust me its alot worse, the poor things get fly blown and more often then not what the farmer doesnt cut off will be slowly eaten away by maggots and infection anyway. Although i do think the procedure should be done in a more humane way and that the live export trade is disgusting, people need to know that there are two sides to every story and banning 'museling' would probably lead to more suffering on the sheeps behalf anyway.

I agree to boycott the australian wool. Why should we have to make the animals suffer. Four our sake. God brought us to this world not alone but with animals and the plants. They need a voice and I'm glad its you Pink. I understand there is a need for comsumption of food and cloth to survive, but going beyong making animals suffer for our sake. Specially for fur. I said no way. It's not right and its not fair to the animals. God, I hope you are outthere, somehting you have to do to make human pay for what they are doing to your animal friends. Enough is enough.

Posted by: fluba | December 31, 2006 07:49 AM
Well done to Pink for spreading the word about wool - keep up the good work!
It's about time people learnt the truth about all the masses of animal suffering around the world and lived animal-cruelty-free lives as I have learnt to over the years. There is no excuse for this whatsoever.
Posted by: Sue Nightingale | December 31, 2006 10:47 AM

Even though I already KNEW cruelty to animals existed all around the world before watching this, nothing could have been more of a wake-up-and-smell-the-evil-in-the-world, slap-in-the-face for me than this. I think that's just it though, that we get so caught up in our own lives that we choose not to worry about the things we label as "none of my business" just cuz it doesn't affect us directly... But you know what? I've never felt so selfish before in my life...
And PINK, you are my hero! thanks

I think it is great that Pink has exposed this horrific disgusting business. Fortunatley more and more famous people are coming out to expose many different types of animal slaughter. But unfortunatley many people still turn away and don't want to even look at video footage. They think well I can't do anything about it. It only takes one person to look, to listen to pass on the word, and if you open your eyes you can help! You may be one person in the world, but to the animals you are one person that helped! Keep going PINK! And to people who care out there, also check out harpseals.org, and the slaughter the harp seals go thru in Canada, or the cat and dog fur trade in china - your cat toys may actually be cat.

I thought since Aussies are so supportive of anti-whaling, that they were a very civilized and humane country. NO MORE. Oh, my God. Why is such massive and deliberate cruelty done to these sweet docile creatures? Thank you so much for giving the sheep a "voice". They deserve to be seen and their stories "told".
Posted by: Amanda | January 18, 2007 10:54 PM
I was totally disgusted by this video, but thankful that Pink is doing this for the good of the animals. I for one, am now going to be more aware of what my clothing are made of, as well as what I eat. Today has shed a lot of light on a lot of different issues dealing with animals. Yeah Pink and PETA for helping do this.

Traumatizing, horrific, sick, people who can live with themselves after doing these things to any living creature should be considered on the same level as serial/mass murderers. I would love to meet one of you sick (blanks) face to face!!
Thanx to Pink I'm glad you brought this to my attention now all we need is to make a music video or commercial for other people blind to this holicost
Posted by: jennie | February 15, 2007 10:05 PM
As an Australian i am disgusted to know just how cruel our farmers are to make a buck.
I am sure that they are so immune to this sadistic torture that they cannot understand that animals are as just as alive as we are.
Who are the real animals though! It is sickening, if only the poor helpless sheep could put a knife to the farmers arse, then maybe this barbaric behaviour would stop.
Your voice for the sheep as ours in the future has to surely change this indusrtry's ways.!!!
This should also be posted on Interantional T.V programs. Come on people with power, let your voice count too!

First off, I'd like to say congratulations to Pink for being so courageous to talk about such an upsetting topic and for doing a very influential job on it.
I feel violated after watching that. Especially by the Australian wool industries. It's something that I was completely unaware of and I feel cheated that the industries had kept that swept under the rug simply to save their ass and because it would cost them.
It's going to cost them now that its becoming a bigger issue and that more people are becoming aware.
I am particularly upset because I saw that in the video one of the workers in the Middle East who was slaughtering the sheep was young. Its an issue that youth are involved as they are being influenced by the industry and without change, they will only follow in the industries old ways once they have authority.

First, thanks with total appreciation to Pink for lending her voice to this atrocity.
Second, this behavior is unconscionable and horrific. I shall definitely NOT purchase any Australian wool and shall research the fabric source before purchasing any woolen clothing.
Wool SHOULD be the bloodless product from these precious animals.
Thank you, again.

Next time Pink is on the Ellen Degeneres show, she needs to tell Ellen to get involved with this since Ellen's girlfriend Portia is from there.

IKEA is my favourite store for home furnishing and decor. But I found it very disturbing that they are selling real sheep skins to be used as rugs on the floor. That is really creepy, how can you sleep in a room with a dead animal skin on the floor next to your bed??

It was because of this site and the information Pink explained that I am now a supporter of PETA. Thank you for getting this information out there. I am helping to spread the word.

I'm Australian and through studying agriculture I've been exposed to the issue of mulesing.
It is extremely interesting to see that PETA has not published an article regarding Pink's backdown from her anti- Australian wool stance that is presented in this article. In January, 2007, Pink admitted that she "probably could have done a lot more research" and that she was misinformed by PETA- which failed to tell her that Australian farmers were and are still committed to phasing out the practice of mulesing by 2010. PETA has failed to present the surgical alternatives that are currently being researched and developed on their websites, presenting an undeniably one- sided argument to mulesing.
Notice how there is only a video of mulesing, but NONE of flystrike? Flystrike is many times worse than mulesing- it kills sheep slowly and painfully as they are eaten alive by maggots. Without mulesing, millions of sheep would die this way.
PETA says that "Ironically, the exposed, bloody wounds themselves often get flystrike before they heal"- seeing as PETA appears to believe that Australian wool farmers want only profit without caring for their animals, why would they mules their sheep if mulesing itself led to flystrike? PETA's claims are extremely self contradictory and exaggerated when it comes to mulesing.
Anyone who comments in the future, or anyone who has already commented needs to do more research and not only base their opinions on what they have seen in this article. Please, everyone, get the full story behind mulesing and you'll see that there's a lot more to mulesing than PETA says it is.

As an Australian Wool grower, I'd like to invite anyone to come and see the real life of an Aussie sheep. When you get the smell of a flyblown sheep up your nose and see it's horrific suffering due to being eaten alive, mulsing may become clearer to you. Go on mate, take up my offer!

the video clip was one of the sadest things i have ever seen i cant believe what they do. i do know that i dont know a lot about this and it seems that both mulesing and flystrike are both horrific. i believe that p!nk is a great artist with both a talented voice and a heart of gold. <3

Sarah is about the only comment that makes any sense at all. IT is all very well for you lot to complain about other peoples work when you have never been in that suituation. I have grown up on a farm with sheep and cattle, we do not like doing it but there is no alternitive readly avaiable. And to say that we do not care about the animals is just BS at the best. Why dont you actually get a normal sheep to show on the video and not a double fleeced sheep that has been missing in the paddock and has therfore missed the last shearing and now has 2 years worth of wool on it. You people need to look at it from the other side of the coin.

Sorry i also forgot to add (to my pervious comment, that wont be put on the site) that farmers and whoever does the musling does not use gardening shears. They are actually wool shears that have been in use in the wool industry since it has started. They are nothing like gardening shears at all. Just another way PETA has got the facts wrong.

Pink mentions mulesing, but i'd like you too see when a sheep is fly blown.
Do you even know what it's like to not deal with the sheep when they are lambs... they get maggots & get eaten from the inside out. The process can take months & it's painful, as the sheep dies slowly.
Tell me, which is more savage, cutting away a little bit of skin when the sheep is a lamb or watching a sheep being eaten alives by flies?
Stop being a sophist, do some research before you start your witch hunt.
If you want to see something gross...

Im an Aussie and a Farmer, I think on a whole these comments are biased and uninformed. I personally dont agree with alot of current farming practices and musling should definately be fazed out asap but by having the very fashion houses who demaded this wool turn their back on this industry is terrible, apart from the musling issue the majority of farmers look after their livestock very well, by destroying the industry PETA is definately sending these sheep to the middle east for an even crueler fate. Where then will the fashion houses get their wool, from China or some other third world country that may not musle their sheep but they definately are not look after. PETA has choosen to work againt farmers rather than with them. the better approach would be to encourage fashion houses to pay a high premium for un museled wool. This would have been the best incentive for farmers to switch over to sheep breeds that dont need to museled. by boycotting australian wool PETA is not only affecting museled wool farmers but all farmers.PETA needs to realise that these things cant be changed over night, to do it would take up to 10 years, seriously what does PETA suggest farmers do with all these wrinkly merinos?
As an Aussie farmer I dont endorse musling but I dont endorse PETA's approach either. Perhaps PETA could chip in a few million of their $$ to help farmers make the change rather than send them broke and the sheep off to the middle east. This issue alone makes me wonder why I even ever supported and promoted PETA.
