Burberry Protest!

Burberry, still reeling from PETA UK's little visit to their London store last week, got another unpleasant surprise this afternoon when four activists showed up at their 57th Street store in New York. Here's how it went down, according to one of the campaigners who was there:
Two activists went in the store with posters while 2 more waited outside with their bloody fur coats inside out and tucked under their arms. The 2 activists inside were picked up by security (literally) and removed from the store, but not before one activist managed to get inside the Burberry store window and start spreading fake blood all over…
Meanwhile, on the outside, the protesters spread fake blood all over the window display, summed up the finer points of the fur issue for passersby with chants like "Burberry tortures animals!" and (for the visual learners in the crowd) used TVs strapped to their bodies to show footage of animals being skinned alive for their fur. Check it out:

Good job Peta. That probably made a few people think about what they were buying.
Posted by: Janet | November 21, 2006 11:13 PM
Those activists have done a great job exposing the truth behind Burberry and it's fur links.
I think anyone that supports the neglect, torture & slaughter of animals all in the name of fashion has BLOOD!! on their hands.

I'm just curious - are all these protests within the legal limits?? You'd think the paint smearing would infringe on some sort of legal issue...but more power to the individuals who will go to jail for our furry friends.
Posted by: Jro | November 22, 2006 02:47 PM
Awesome work.....Keep doing the amazing job. I support you 100%, someone needs to speak on behalf of the animals.
Posted by: Petra | November 22, 2006 03:52 PM
your work is really appreciated!!! these companies should be ashamed.
Posted by: c.r. | November 22, 2006 09:24 PM
While I am a passionate advocate for animals, and genuine protestor of furs, leathers and wools, I will continue to buy merchandise from Burberry that is animal friendly. I am glad PETA is bringing the violence of the fur industry to the house's attention, but I beleive there are many companies that are using fur much more in its collections. (i.e. Prada's racoon coats and bags and Fendi's floor lenght coats)
Posted by: Leo | November 22, 2006 09:39 PM
I couldn't even watch a minute of the fur production video. All I kept thinking was oh-my-god and how much the animals looked like my own companions. Sickening.
If I didn't live in Canada {where to my knowledge, Burberry doesn't have any chains}, I'd totally be out there.
Can't wait for 2010 to come, so I can be 18 and ditch my fair country to become a PETA intern.
Get those murdering fucks out of the fashion industry. If you can even call it that.
BURBERRY MURDER!
Posted by: KOT | November 22, 2006 09:52 PM
why in this modern age..vanity..profit..don't we see that unless we take care of the planet and it's animals there will be nothing left..no bloated CEO's pay or shareholder profits..no beamers or learjets..there will be nothing..are we as a species so dumb and cruel?..sadly we are..I hope our children will make the difference that we seem unable of do. Perhaps we should remember the words of Mahatami Gandi "The greatness of a nation and it's moral progress can be judged by the way it's animals are treated"
Posted by: naru | November 22, 2006 10:10 PM
be the change you wish to see power to the peaceful vanity really has taken our sanity

Shame on companies that put profit before caring and compassion.
You make yourself look very silly selling a product that is intended to have flair when really people just feel sad that you have such low compassion.
Drop the fur and show us the REAL you. We like an honest company.
Posted by: Andre Inglis | November 22, 2006 10:57 PM
God Bless all the members from PETA. The work you guys do is something to be proud about. I wish you the best of luck and really hope you get to save many innocent, valuable lives.
Posted by: Jessica | November 22, 2006 10:58 PM
I APPLAUDE YOU FOR YOUR ACTIONS. THIS MUST STOP! WHAT UNBELIEVABLE CRUELTY THESE ANIMALS ENDURE. LETS KEEP SPREADING THE WORD.
Posted by: fiona | November 22, 2006 11:07 PM
Great Job, hopefully they will loose their business and change their way to fake fur. It looks better anyway.
Posted by: Miriam & Bill | November 22, 2006 11:10 PM
Just wondering how humans can be SO cruel and kill all those beautiful animals. The designers will not be happy until all animals are dead and none exist. THEN what will they do to make a living? The horrid creatures who buy these furs are despicable scum.
Posted by: Carroll Hall | November 22, 2006 11:12 PM
Good on you, PETA!!
I support you 100%, you are such an effective voice for these voiceless and defenceless beautiful souls.
Good work! :)
Posted by: Siobhan | November 22, 2006 11:17 PM
The true calibre of a person is revealed in the way he/she treats animals. The ignorant refuse to look at exactly where their fur comes - that makes me angry.
Posted by: Pamela Haze | November 22, 2006 11:17 PM
PETA you are making a differance, I will support you with my dieing breath.
Posted by: Lady Alexandra Wolf | November 22, 2006 11:20 PM
It's about time that we show our INTOLERANCE to the Fashion Industry (Burberry)
by Speaking out Against the HORRIFIC CRUELTY that Animals must endure so that "we" can look good by wearing something POPULAR, because of society's HIGH STANDARDS for what is BEAUTIFUL! There is NOTHING Beautiful about Bloody Bludgeoned Animals, usually Skinned Alive for their FUR!!!
Posted by: Jenifer Ast | November 22, 2006 11:28 PM
The footage from PETA'S Protest Compain is very strong and sure influenced allot if minds even though it might take them some time to process the IMAGES OF BURBERRY'S CRUAL ACTION AGAINST COMPLEATELY INNOCENT CREATURES THAT MAKE OUR WORLD ONLY A BETTER PLACE! unlike those murderes that make it only better for themselves!!!
Posted by: Anya | November 23, 2006 12:04 AM
I just want to thank all of the animal rights protesters. THANK YOU for your efforts to stop the suffering of animals!!
Posted by: Sue Shigley | November 23, 2006 12:27 AM
Thank you, PETA, for all that you do for animals. These precious creatures do not deserve this torture! I only hope that this will cause people to realize that animals are not here to serve humans in any way that those humans see fit! I will continue to support and assist PETA in any way I can. Awesome job here!
Posted by: Nikki | November 23, 2006 12:32 AM
Hell yeah!!! it's about time!!! I don't think those rich S.O.B's really care beyond there own self existance's, the least that can be done is an eye opener and a way to get there attention is bringing it to them for certain!
Posted by: Jenny | November 23, 2006 12:34 AM
my heart goes out to these animals....... i couldnt beleive what i saw after what they done to raccoons beat and skinned them alive..... i saw raccoon eyes so sad and helpless i feel like we failed them. we have to do something to stop them doing to them....... i cried and cried . its really so terriable of them what they done to those precious animals. Those men ough to be in jail for animals abused!!!!

Posted by: Dustin | November 23, 2006 01:17 AM
Keep protesting. I would like to know if these people have and feeling and how would they like it if it was done to them. Animals have also got a life.
Posted by: Marjorie | November 23, 2006 01:34 AM
thank you, PETA, for your compassion, courage and tireless efforts on behalf of our friends the animals.
Posted by: Judy Wicks | November 23, 2006 01:36 AM
I think these people shouldn't be protested just like this, such people should be tortured mentally as they torture poor animals.
Posted by: Pankaj Duggal | November 23, 2006 01:41 AM
Great job! Hopefully more people will stop giving more money to the fur industry.
Posted by: Jessica | November 23, 2006 01:58 AM
WELL DONE PETA!!!! I commend you for your incredible work. I will be sending out this information to everyone that I know in south africa. I cannot believe that this company still defiantly refuses to ban fur from its range, being fully aware of the incredible torture that these beautiful animals are exposed to. I think that the Burberry Shareholders should all be skinned alive. PETA YOU ARE ALL ANGELS....
Posted by: Renee Huxham | November 23, 2006 02:05 AM
I thought Burberry was fine and stylish and in fact I still do but I was shocked when I heard they're using fur in their clothing... I'm totally against it, and because of that... GOOD JOB PETA! From Sabrina

Posted by: Anouk | November 23, 2006 03:34 AM
Well done. Now lets nail the bastard who shot that 10 day old tiger cub (in the Daily Mail last Saturday) and stuffed it for an ornament. I would prefer the tiger cub alive to thinking of it as a £20,000 ornament!
Posted by: Anne Nott | November 23, 2006 04:43 AM
This is great what you, i'll support this as much as i can from here....they can't keep doing this ! It's outrageous ! I work in the fashion/photography but it's no need to use FUR !

Posted by: Tatiana | November 23, 2006 05:18 AM
i liked the idea of the protestors using TV's for the benefits of passers by.
This will show the crowd whats the fuss about and that PETA is NOT over-reacting. Everyone should know the real reason behind the protests. I think allot of people dont really understand the reason behind the protests, and just assume its a bunch of animal fanatics or 'crazy people' as i have heard in the past. Seeing the videos for themselves is the most effective. GREAT JOB GUYS! please keep it up!
Posted by: marissa | November 23, 2006 05:42 AM
Thanks to Peta activists, they have done an exceptional work and i would also like to tell those people who burberry's products they themself are the killers and have a bloody hands may god give them a sense of humanity who can even kills a nature just because they have nothing else to wear.
World wakes up unless you stop wearing they won't stop killing pleaseeeeeeeeee.

anyone that chooses to wear any fur products are a disgrace to this human race. What a shame your royal family suport this barbaric industry.
Posted by: jennifer kelly | November 23, 2006 05:46 AM
This demo was the greatest I've ever seen...a job well done! Wish there was more people like you who cared and this barbaric behaviour would stop. We must teach our children now that this is not acceptable to society and it must be wiped out as the suffering of these poor animals is horrendous. You can look glamorous with fashion clothes FUR ONLY LOOKS GLAMOROUS ON ANIMALS!!!!
Posted by: bassrockcats | November 23, 2006 05:55 AM
Well done Peta! I am 300% with you on this. Anyone who kills animals for their fur alive or not should be arrested and tortured. It's a despicable and disgusting act. I feel so sad knowing that there such heartless and cruel people on this earth. Shame on all the careless designers who keep on selling fur.
Posted by: Barbara Menthonnex | November 23, 2006 06:08 AM
у вас есть сторонники с Казахстана и России. так держать, Пета!!!
Posted by: Dana | November 23, 2006 06:15 AM
You guys Rock!!!
About time people realise what these fashion houses do for the sake of stupid cruel fashion.
Posted by: Sharon | November 23, 2006 06:24 AM
That footage is harrowing, i am utterly appalled at the way today's society treats animals, how dare they get away with acts like that. Killing an animalis a big enough issue, but skinning it alive is unbearable. I really am sickened and saddened by this footage. People just turn a blind eye and don't want to get involved. What kind of a world is this? I believe whatever goes around comes around and hopefully these bastards will get what they deserve - to die, lets hope they sufffer immensley too. How do they sleep at night and all for the sake of 'fashion' Fashion has a lot to answer for! Never mind ofcom and fat food ads, what about this cruelty just to look good............?
Posted by: Jen | November 23, 2006 06:39 AM
KEEP ON PROTESTING!
SHOW ALL THE WORLD WHAT THEY ARE DOINGO.
FULLY SUPPORTE YOU.
GO AHEAD!
Posted by: marie campanc | November 23, 2006 07:35 AM
Wearing fur is quite like smoking in public places. Is one of the most ancient ways to look snobbish, filthy, unsocial, unfashionable and primitive. And positively ridiculous, bear in mind we are in the 21st. century, upon the treshold of nanoengineered garments.
Posted by: Fred Correa | November 23, 2006 07:51 AM
It looks like a very good protest and I especially think the blood accents on the poster with the peta tv are effective... but to go into another person's store and cause vandalism that other people have to clean up is ludicrous. I understand they're not conforming to your wishes by disinclining to exclude real fur from their products, but can't you be more respectful in your demonstrations?? As I sit here with my chocolate soymilk, I realize that, although I'm new to PETA, I can no longer support them.
When did the Gandhi principles of warfare die out?
Posted by: Mark | November 23, 2006 08:05 AM
I have just sent an email to the CEO at Burberry, Angela Ahrendts, in the hope that she may listen. It would be great if more of the better known designers could help out our cause, as they are the ones that dictate what is produced within the fashion industry.
BURBERRY SUCKS.
Posted by: Kerry | November 23, 2006 08:09 AM
There's no good reason for people to wear real fur when fake fur looks just as nice. It's all arrogance! Need to especially target the rich and famous for their callous attitude. PETA is fighting the good fight... Keep the pressure on!

It's good but is this really an intelligent way of going about protesting a huge fashion corporation? I am all against animal cruelty and a vegetarian myself but there has got to be another way than the folly of barging into stores. Fake blood? come on!
Posted by: Concerned Vegan | November 23, 2006 09:38 AM

I'd like to sent Burberry my personal message.
I'd like to send them and any other industry or person who wears or sells Fur a strong advice: No matter how long you will still be in business but be sure that every day is an added one of suffering to your life and the lives of all your next generations. Blood and suffering of animals is a murder morally worse than to one perpetuate to humans because they may have somehow a chance to save their lives animals don't. They can't organize themselves in States with rules, law and prisons. Not just you're missing the point but you are putting in danger your sons and sons of your sons. Blood requires justice and someone sometimes will do justice.
May I sound crazy or messianic? It doesn't really matter what you believe.

HOW CAN PEOPLE SLAUGHTER ANIMALS JUST FOR FUR AND FEW BUCKS..DON'T THEY KNOW THAT THEY ARE JUST KILLING GOD'S CREATURES??ACTIVISTS ARE DOING COMMENDABLE JOB AND THEY SHOULD CONTINUE DOING IT UNTIL SUCH RASCALS FEEL GUILTY...
Posted by: AVNEET KAUR OBEROI | November 23, 2006 11:25 AM
It must take a demented person to be able to work in a fur factory. It's gut wrenching watching the footage of the cruel treatment of animals just for humans to wear fur.

its so great to see that protests can be held without violence. i think the way you have carried out this demonstration is both positive and productive. violence only makes us look bad and our animal welfare goals harder to achieve. well done and i hope burberry wakes up to themselves sooner rather than later.

How is it possible that there is people who actually are getting paid for killing??

That's cool, i hope it has an impact, but offcourse there will akway be people who critisize the protest, in my opnion the best part was showing the animals getting skinned alive. Videos like that ALWAYS gets to people, and i think it's the best [sometimes the only] way to change people's mind about fur. Keep up the fight. God Bless.

Thank you for showing me how cruel Burberry can be. I will spread the word around here (I live in Lisbon, Portugal). Keep on the good work, you're actions are an inspiration to us.

Skinning animals is evil and especially skinning them alive! Who ever works at your company is a very bad person and who ever wears your clothes probably doesn't know that your skinning animals ALIVE i mean couldn't you like put them down with a needle if anything so its peaceful for them but what i have to tell you is that your company has some very big issues and you all need help, you people are all totally naffed.
Posted by: J | November 24, 2006 07:53 AM
Go PETA! This method of protest is brilliant. People buy cruel products without even thinking about the materials or how they were acquired. This forces them to see how the furs were obtained. Keep it up!!!

Thank you demonstrators.
THE ANIMALS SKINNED ALIVE TV VIDEO SHOWN TO THE WORLD WILL CERTAINLY STOP MANY THE PURCHASE OF MANY FURES. DO NOT STOP SHOWING THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPREAD THIS VIDEO AROUND. THE ANIMALS BEG YOU TO SPEAK FOR THEM!!!

It is so sad that with all of the faux products on the market today, Burberry chooses cruelty over kindness and money over everything. Hopefully when more people learn of this we can put them out of business. I recall that when the Burlington Coat Factory was selling coats with 'dog and cat' fur from China that they sure stopped after the protests.
Posted by: Anne Heyes | November 24, 2006 12:02 PM
Keep up the good work PETA and NEVER give up. Hopefully the flood of letters sent to Burberry will make them think twice.

Posted by: Denise | November 25, 2006 01:56 AM
I totally think hurting animals is very wrong and disgusting. People need to be more aware of whats really happening not the "if I dont see it, it does not happen" theme. But don't you think that sometimes things go to far? If would have been perfect to stand outside or across the street if they made you move to get people to listen to you, so why did you have to go on with the fake blood? I talked to a lot of friends trying to get them to go vegan but they say that Peta comes across to strong. They dont want to listen to anything Peta is about because of all the senseless damage they do. Post fliers everywhere, talk to people on the street. Because of things like this, people will not even listen to what I have to say because they are afraid I will sray them with blood. You are giving us a bad name
Posted by: danielle | November 25, 2006 02:41 AM

Posted by: Simona | November 25, 2006 05:50 AM
The fastest way to make a person believe in your crusade is through violence? To change something takes more than heathen acts of wich a child should be accused. Perhaps in the future you should take a page from Martin Luther King jr. The fact that you are only trying to get media attention states your true goals have been thrown out and that you to have become another tool not able to turn anything besides stomachs. You wear clothing and I am sure that you eat vegetables...do you realise that the farms and the production centers for the later all include the mistreatment of animals and humans? perhaps you should go naked and not eat anything since every green you eat takes away from a starving animal.

I am continually appalled and broken hearted over such widespread cruelty to animals and ,in the name of fashion, it's truly inexcusable. Keep up the good work of educating the gullible, uninformed consumers. I have been one of those myself to my great sorrow. I am trying to improve as I learn more. Oh that continually many others will do the same.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see what gets accomplished by throwing red paint on a window. All this does is damage property, which in my opinion doesn't help the battered reputation of this orginization at all. If you really want to make a difference, I suggest you find better methods of protest that doesn't damage property or make you look as crazy as your image makes you up to be. This protest is a perfect example of why nobody takes this institution seriously.

While i completely think that wearing fur is wrong, i disagree with your speading fake blood in and outside of the store windows. I agree that sometimes radical actions need to be done, but the store windows are the stores property, and you should not violate that. By doing that you are lowering your moral standards. I would not call this a peaceful protest. I think that we should do peaceful protests. Way to go by standing up for animal rights, but I'm disappointed PETA would do something like spread fake blood on windows.

How come we always seem to react to television/ad programs of sick, starving children in Africa dying of AIDS? Exposing atrocities brings awareness. Keep up the good work. Burberry just might wish one day they never knew PETA. Also, people....keep your eyes out for Bebe...the clothing store. They seem to sell alot of real fur coats made in China. PETA has all the right motives but none of the right moves. Vandalism creates massive tension with our enemies(the fur buyers and wearers)and pushes them further to the extreme rather than coercing them to join our battle to free animals from torture and cruelty. PETA has to keep in mind that there are always real, living people with family and friends behind all of this - they need a source of income just as much as we do - we have to stop the purchasing of fur from the bottom up, meaning we have to start with us: the consumer, the single most powerful entity that fuels materialism.

Unfortunatly, I think it would be best it you would protest more peacefully. if you make people angry by making them clean up fake blood etc, they will be more likely to be against your cause from spite than to really listen to the issues that need to be addressed. Keep up the good work but try to win over supporters of the cause not turn them away!

thanks.

In regards to a previous comment... made by Kb. Although I've been following PETA for a short time I agree with you that some acts by PETA may be seen as extreme, and even illegal, but when PETA does try to pursue other avenues in order to bring changes, nothing hardly ever does. Sometimes in a world of silence, some people need to speak out and shout for those that can't.

Burberry doesn't seem to use as much fur in its collections as other upscale brands. Smearing blood/paint/whatever all over the place is probably actionable trespassing and criminal damage to private property.

Hasn't anyone ever considered a tactful approach? It is profoundly primative to interrupt someone's workplace in efforts to make a statement.

WE CAN ALL HOPE A DAY COMES WHEN HUMANS REALIZE THE DEVILISH CRUELTY WITH WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN TREATING ANIMALS FOR CENTURIES. WE NEED MORE ACTIVE PROTESTS LIKE THIS AS IT WILL OPEN PEOPLES'EYES AND MAKE THEM REALIZE THE WRONG DOING THAT HAS BEEN METED OUT TOWARDS ANIMALS FOR AGES.
JESUS CHRIST!!!I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE SOMEBODY IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WILL ACTUALLY WEAR FUR!
GOD BLESS PETA AND ALL THE ANIMAL LOVERS AROUND THE WORLD.

I think it is important to care about the safety and well being of animals, but I also think its a matter of supply and demand. If all the companies who currently use fur stopped, they would really lose alot of business. In my opinion, it is not the companies you should be attacking, its the people who are buying the products.

I do believe that cruelty to animals is wrong but i believe what PETA done with this protest is also very wrong.
If you want to protest fine, but why do you have to go to the extremes of smeering fake blood everywhere??
Instead of making a point to these people they now think you are idiots, the people in the store that had to clear up the fake blood think your idiots and yes you will cause attention to the cause but in completely the wrong way and show PETA as a company that supports vadolism. Well done guys!!
Did no one stop to think of protesting at head offices with banners would cause just as much attention, is vadalism really the answer in this case?

SHOW THOSE CRUEL IDIOTS WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS WRONG!! YOU GO!! THEY ARE INSENSITIVE LOSERS MAKING CLOTHING FROM FURS FROM TORTURED RACOONS. BURBERRY IS FOR DUMB LOSERS WHO ONLY CARE ABOUT THEIR LOOKS, AND NOT ABOUT ANIMALS!!
